Doors Open Days is 30-years-old this year and that is even more reason to celebrate. The idea is a simple but brilliant one: ensure that Scotland’s built heritage, new and old, is made accessible to people
by opening the doors and let them look round. You can visit some familiar and much-loved places; you can a look at other buildings, some private, that are only open on these weekends. Scottish Civic Trust is the national coordinator, and the weekends run during Scottish Archaeology Month, coordinated by Archaeology Scotland.

BETTER EQUIPPED FOR BIG SCHOOL!
Inverclyde’s new high school students are arriving better prepared, thanks to the Scottish Book Trust
I
nverclyde’s new intake of secondary school students will be arriving better equipped for their studies thanks to a gift from the Scottish Book Trust. Read Write Count Moving Up kits were given to every P7 pupil as they left primary school at the start of the summer holidays; Inverclyde is one of nine local authorities tin this pilot scheme to support parents and pupils during this time of change. The Moving Up kit was created after consultation with local authorities and the Association of Directors of Education. Learning professionals, librarians and teachers provided feedback about items that would be helpful for Primary 7 pupils who are transitioning into secondary school. This is a Scottish Government initiative, in partnership with Education Scotland and Scottish Book Trust. And the trust is also providing training and support to all the local authorities involved in the scheme, helping to improve current transition programmes between primary and secondary schools. Marc Lambert, chief of the Scottish Book Trust, said: ‘The transition from primary school to secondary school is an exciting time for young people, and our new Read Write Count Moving

Up kits give pupils and parents much needed support. We consulted to ensure that the Moving Up kit contains essential items for any pupil starting high school.’ The Scottish Book Trust is a national charity dedicated to changing lives through reading and writing; to inspire and support the people of Scotland to read and write for pleasure. As well as taking part in this pilot scheme the trust also gifts books to every child in Scotland to ensure families of all backgrounds can share the joy of books at home and it works with teachers to inspire children to develop a love of reading, creating innovative classroom activities, book awards and author events. Read, Write, Count is a campaign run by Scottish Government with support from Scottish Book Trust and Education Scotland to support parents and carers who want to take a more active role in their children’s learning. And as extra help there is Parent Club which brings together existing Scottish Government support for parents. Parent Club offers tips and ideas from other parents who have done it all before, backed up by advice from trusted experts on how to deal with issues such as developing
Each kit contains: • reusable water bottle • protractor and ruler set • pen, pencil and rubber set • journal notebook • scientific calculator • pocket dictionary • parent/pupil booklet • USB Stick
‘These unique packs are a national first and contain items and advice which will give pupils the best chance at a smooth change and help parents and carers to support their children at this important time.’ – John Swinney, Deputy First Minister and Education Secretary

THE
STYLE FILES T
he high fashion brand Moschino was originally created in 1983 by the late Franco Moschino. Franco was born in Abbiaegrasso, near Milan in 1950. He initially studied fine art and was a fashion illustrator before starting his own fashion brand. He died in 1994 aged just 44. Franco was a creative genius, who made fashion fun with his eccentric, innovative designs. He also had the ability to emblazon clothes with slogans and criticisms like - ‘Fashion is a Waist of Money’, ‘Expensive Jacket’ and ‘Bull Chic’ without causing offence. Alongside the Moschino playfulness were beautifully cut and constructed clothes resulting in completely unique garments. When Franco died, his assistant Rosella Jardini took over and she was there up until 2013 when American designer Jeremy Scott was appointed as creative director. Jeremy has continued Franco’s playfulness while incorporating lots of pop culture references, really mixing high fashion with street style. Jeremy Scott (in my opinion) has one of the best jobs in the fashion industry. Fortunately, he has the backing of Aeffe SpA, which now owns Moschino, and is one of the major players in the luxury goods market - which basically means a healthy injection of cash for Jeremy allowing his imagination to run wild and free, which it certainly does! Here are just some of Jeremy Scott’s creations for Moschino.
12
CL48 Style Files.indd 12
by Marilyn Thompson
His very first collection was inspired by fast food giant McDonald’s – just imagine a Michelin-starred McDonald’s restaurant with the staff wearing Moschino couture! THE BARBIE™ COLLECTION
When asked why Barbie inspired Jeremy said: ‘Why not, she’s practically perfect’. Indeed! Also, the models roller-skated down the runway. What’s not to like? THE FLOWER COLLECTION
The models, quite literally, became huge bouquets. Interflora™ may have a problem with this particular delivery! (Other flower delivery companies are available). THE CAR WASH COUTURE COLLECTION
Clothes featuring traffic signs galore. A stand-out piece was the beautifully constructed trench coat bearing the slogan, ‘Open Trench Caution required!’ There are so many others, Paper Dolls, SpongeBob SquarePants™, My Little Pony™ etc. (I told you he had the best job in fashion!) however, space is limited and I must mention the two most recent collections. First, there’s the Resort 2019 collection and the fashion show was actually staged in Wisteria Lane, which some of you may remember being the setting for the TV show ‘Desperate Housewives’. It was a horrorinspired collection – think of Frankenstein inspired scars and prom queen carnage and you’ll be on the right track. F/W 2019 is all about the
80’s soap opera ‘Dynasty’ (I’ll bet the ‘Dynasty’ theme tune is running through your mind right now!). At the time of writing, the full promotional video (directed by Steven Meisel) has not been released, however, the preview gives us a little taster of what’s to come and it’s full on 80’s glamour! Screen shots from the video show witty one liners like: ‘She’s here with him? - In a dress from last season’. It’s so over the top and tongue in cheek - Franco Moschino would have loved it.

STEER A COURSE TO THE BOAT SHOW Scotland’s Boat Show 2019 is for sailors and all those who love the best things in life - a spectacular marine leisure event for Scotland and Inverclyde
S
cotland’s, Boat Show 2019 (SBS19) is the largest boat show in the country and the largest brokerage show in the UK, held over the weekend of October 11, 12 and 13 at Kip Marina, Inverkip. This year the show promises to excel itself. There are new sponsors on board and a record demand for exhibition spaces; continuing the success of last year as Scotland heads towards the Year of Coasts and Waters in 2020. One of the show’s missions is to attract new people to try sailing and boating in Scotland for the very first time. Main sponsor RYA Scotland will again offer its extremely popular range of free onwater ‘taster’ sessions giving adults and children the chance to try sailing yachts, motor yachts, RIB driving and dinghy sailing all in the safe environment of Kip Marina and under the expert tuition of partners SportScotland National Centre Cumbrae, Ocean Youth Trust, Clyde Muirshiel Country Park and You and Sea Training. Part of the unique appeal of Scotland’s Boat Show is always the large numbers of high quality pre-owned boats on display from Michael Schmidt & Partner and this year promises to be their largest brokerage range ever, with a display to suit every style and budget. For new boats on the water Inspiration Marine is assembling a superb display of stunning design-led yachts from the Hanse Yacht Group while Stan Prosser’s Marine Sales Scotland return with an impressive display of more than 20 luxury powerboats to tempt the discerning buyer. On shore, in the centrepiece RYA Scotland Pavilion exhibition space is already sold out, with a range of prestigious companies ready to display the latest trends and equipment in boats and boating. The Cruising Association returns to host a full programme of entertaining and educational live talks and demonstrations on the presentation theatre and stage and as we go to press more is planned but yet to be confirmed. See our next edition for more details. 16

Scotland’s Boat Show 2019 takes place at Kip Marina, Inverkip, Inverclyde. Admission is free and car parking is a nominal £5 per vehicle.
LIVE LIFE IN STYLE!
SBS19 is delighted to welcome Caldonian MacBrayne as flagship sponsors of the LifeStyle Pavilion. Alongside the boat show Kip Marina also hosts a pop-up shopping, food and leisure experience which is unrivalled. LifeStyle pavilion has artisan craft and design companies with everything from Scottish fashion to hand-built furniture. West College Food & Drink Pavilion has Scottish food and drink producers in a ‘street market’ style setting, plus a return of the extremely popular live demonstration kitchen and stage area where visitors can enjoy daily displays from the hospitality students of West College Scotland. In one Leisure Exhibition Pavilion next to the RYA Scotland Pavilion, the covered area has been extended and improved to cater for additional exhibitors after the popularity of last year; it is already approaching capacity with new exhibitors making plans to travel from across the UK to Kip Marina. Elsewhere visitors ashore can also enjoy seeing luxury cars, motor homes, motorcycles, helicopter rides, pipe bands, children’s entertainment and a host of other attractions.
At the lower end of the size scale don’t miss the Hartley Boats flagship stand in the Small Boats Area where visitors can see some of the most popular sailing dinghies in the UK – perfect for sailing, and racing; an ideal boat for learning to sail.

ON YER BIKE INVERCLYDE!
Ronnie Cowan MP for Inverclyde looks back at his cycling past as a way of going forward
O
ne of my cherished memories from my childhood is going to Millport with my brother, sister and assorted cousins. We would hire bikes and cycle round and round Cumbrae just as many people had before us and many, like me, continue to do so to this day. Cycling round the island was a carefree and enjoyable way to spend summer days. As a child it was just fun and it gave me a sense of freedom and independence. As an adult I am maybe more aware of the benefits to my health and the financial savings compared to a private car or even public transport. Obviously depending on the distance of the journey and in the West of Scotland the weather and topography, it may not always be suitable to cycle but then again 60 per cent of all journeys undertaken in Inverclyde are less than five kilometres (that’s 3.1 miles in old money) so maybe it’s not as unrealistic to cycle as you think. And those hills don’t need to be as
daunting if you have an E bike. Electric battery-assisted bikes are becoming increasingly common and they take the edge off the extra effort required to manoeuvre the hills that adorn Inverclyde. And if it’s just the weather that’s putting you off then specialist shops are full of suitable clothing but to be honest jeans,
‘a cycling culture carefully nurtured and supported is perfectly feasible’ jumper, high visibility jacket and a helmet are enough. If you are wary of cycling after a long layoff then courses are available via the Bothy, which is at Gourock Railway Station, and the expert supervision provided will ensure you are confident and safe. While the main roads may not be your idea of a safe, relaxing
Ronnie Cowan MP
cycle there are many alternatives in Inverclyde, from the waterfront paths in Greenock town centre and Port Glasgow and the more rural routes around the Cut and Loch Thom. The Scottish Government has committed £51 million to Active Travel and locally the cycling Bothy, run by Josh Wood and Shona Morris along with Community Tracks fronted by Stewart Phillips are looking to utilise some of that funding by working with Sustrans to develop the cycling route 75 which runs through Inverclyde. The route needs some tender loving care and, in some parts rerouting, to make it more accessible. When we look to the future and the possibilities for cycling in Scotland we don’t need to look abroad and in particular the Netherlands, we need to look to the past and the Island of Cumbrae to understand that a cycling culture carefully nurtured and supported is perfectly feasible and indeed desirable in the West of Scotland.

As someone who runs a seasonal business which greatly relies on good weather, I have a greater interest than most. I find myself only checking a forecast a couple of days in advance, having lost faith in longer range forecasts. Short term planning is not ideal, but here in the west of Scotland it is sometimes the only option. My sympathy goes out to anyone trying to plan an outdoor party or barbecue. One rain shower is often enough to summon a cloud of the dreaded midges, which can quickly bring an end to outdoor fun. This season began with a warm spring, with enough rain to really get the plants off to strong start. Temperatures have remained moderate, even at night, but some very heavy rain has set back some softer bedding plants. Even the best quality plants and the most careful planning will not guarantee that the odd plant may succumb to disease, pests or simply natural causes. These plants should be replaced and I would recommend looking at your garden centre to see what is available. Most retailers will have fewer plants to choose from later in summer. However, some garden centres, like Cardwell, will have alternatives. This might be

Slugs, snails, whitefly and greenfly are prevalent this year, thanks to the weather. Kieran Gallagher from Cardwell Garden Centre gives his expert advice mature pot bedding (larger, strong plants that are already in flower and ready to plant out) or varieties that will flower later in summer or even into autumn. In our case, Cardwell is fortunate to have our growing nursery which means that we can supply high quality plants throughout the season. As we get closer to autumn we introduce selected varieties from reputable growers to supplement what we can grow ourselves. Warm and wet or humid weather can bring its own issues. Slugs and snails are prevalent this year, as are whitefly and greenfly. Slugs and snails can be treated in several ways. Old fashioned slug pellets can still be purchased, although you should check that they are suitable for areas with pets or wild animals/birds. Barriers can be formed using sand, broken up egg shells or sea shells. If you are going to use sand or sea shells these should be well washed before using and are really best purchased. Copper barrier tape is a great method to use on
