The Kelpies come to the Clyde! Scotland’s Boat Show, 12-14 October at Kip Marina, is scheduled to welcome the Kelpie Maquettes - the three metre-high sculptures, hand-crafted by renowned Scottish sculptor Andy Scott, which he used as models to create the world’s largest equine sculpture in Falkirk. The Kelpie Maquettes tour the world helping to promote Scotland and the Falkirk area as visitor destinations. These iconic artworks pay homage to the tradition of the working horses of Scotland which pulled barges and boats along Scotland’s canals.

SBS18: celebrating sailing, the sea and life in style By Joanne Simms
The big weekend 12-14 October is the one we’ve all been waiting for when Kip Marina hosts Scotland’s Boat Show 2018. SBS18 is the largest boat show in Scotland and the largest brokerage (pre-owned) boat show in the UK where the sailing world comes to do business and we all can enjoy a spectacular day out. Never been sailing before? The RYA Scotland’s free ‘taster sessions’ are a 30-minute hands-on experience, with experts, in a variety of craft in the safety of the marina; book early via the RYA Scotland website and scotlandsboatshow.co.uk.
Wander along the marina pontoons or see the displays on shore of Scotland’s biggest selection of new and pre-owned boats; more than 130 boats are on display - everything from a £500 dinghy to a £1m luxury powerboat. You can experience speeds of up to 120mph, and forces of 6g during cornering, as you race over the Clyde with Gordon Cook Racing Team! Book your ride at www.2seaterF1.com or on the day at the RYA Pavilion.
See the show from the air with Heliscot and Adventure001, flying at 1,000 feet out over Gourock and on over the Clyde and back. Advance bookings via www. scotlandsboatshow.co.uk or on the day at the HeliScot check in.
Or try paddleboarding with Glasgow’s www.westendadventure. co.uk on Saturday and Sunday at £15 for wet suit hire and tuition. For the mobility impaired, Clyde Muirshiel’s wheelyboat Discovery has taster sessions too, and lookout for the Ocean Explorer yacht.

Call of the Wild Unleash your inner animal instinct with A/W’s biggest trend. If you choose to listen to the call, then you’ll find yourself prowling around the shops, tempted by the stunning selection of faux animal prints that are featured on just about everything this season. From clothes and accessories all the way through to home furnishings, you really will be spoiled for choice. Animal prints are a classic that come around every few seasons, so although not groundbreaking, some would say (myself included), that they never really go out of style. An item of animal print clothing will always look chic when worn in the right way and with the right attitude. DVF, otherwise known as Diane Von Fustenberg, whose clothes are featured here, was a designer who really stood out on the catwalk with her bold take on feline fashion. Her bright yellow leopard print, together with striking geometric patterns, colourful checks, and actual bird prints all came together to achieve maximum effect. This clashing of colours, patterns, prints, textures and even animals, makes for a very modern way to wear this trend. Other designers including Victoria
Beckham, Michael Kors and Max Mara kept to more traditional and less edgy designs by concentrating solely on the classic black and brown leopard print. However, its not just leopard print that’s having a moment - many

different species from the animal kingdom are also in fashion (as long as they have a fashionable coat of course) - there’s Cheetah and Jaguar patterns, Tiger and Zebra stripes and, if it appeals, there’s Snake prints as well. @clydelifemag
The teen STYLE Files Plaid Parade
It’s easy to build an outfit around animal prints. Use them as a statement piece and let a bold full length coat, cosy sweater or sharp pencil skirt take centre stage by wearing with other only black clothes. Alternatively, take a walk on the wild side, by taking inspiration from DVF and mix and match with lots of other different kinds of prints and textures. Otherwise, make your outfit pop simply with the addition of some well chosen accessories, like animal print gloves, bags, belts, hats, shoes or scarves.
From punk inspired tartan blouses to preppy checked skirts, animal prints aren’t the only patterns dominating a/w 2018. Whether you prefer bold colourful checks or more demure tones, a statement plaid piece is sure to liven up any wardrobe.
Fashion & Beauty Notes... Whether it’s in the name of fashion, or just for keeping warm, hats are set to be autumn’s biggest accessory trend. From knitted balaclava’s to chic berets, look out for some pretty trendy headgear when you’re next at the shops!
Hair
You know how there’s always that one item of clothing from your past that you wished you still had? Well, for me, it was a truly stunning silk, leopard print designer blouse with full pussy bow from the 90’s. I’m under no illusions - it wouldn’t even fit me now - but it ticked every single box and would look so good on my daughter. Aargh...

It’s a tough job, but someone should do it. We’ve seen a revival in the fortunes of gin and now rum looks set to lose its yo-ho-ho-anda-bottle-of image. Best selling author on spirits of the drinkable kind, Ian Buxton takes a look at the new artisan brands being created within the crafts drinks movement as well as established old brands in a hardback book published this summer. Whisky is a national treasure; Edinburgh is famous for gin and our seafaring tradition gives Scotland a long-established link to rum. Ian Buxton also takes a look at rum cocktails. Mojito anyone?

Jobs make communities As an elected politician I do what all good citizens do, I look at our society and wonder what can we do to improve it. My office deals with constituents every day that have problems related to housing, welfare, law and order, anti social behaviour and a range of issues that blight our communities. We work hard and use every resource available to us to resolve as many of these cases as we can. The truth is that we can’t solve them all and people’s lives will continue to be detrimentally affected by them. I am continually reminded however that while we address each case on its own merit the root causes are often the same. Areas of high deprivation continue to show higher incidents of crime, drug abuse and alcohol abuse. People living there are less socially mobile while their educational achievements and aspirations can suffer. That isn’t a condemnation of individuals but the fact remains that people in communities that are impoverished have fewer opportunities, poorer health and die younger. And yet we have a solution. If you look across the globe the areas of greatest deprivation are the areas with the highest unemployment. Jobs make communities, employment enriches people’s lives, people are happier, better adjusted and family homes become better places to grow up in. Children’s schooling improves as does their health. Employment can be the catalyst for change. Unfortunately things are not going to get easier. Our
society is changing and with the onset of autonomous vehicles and the gig economy, society is going to come under greater pressure but here and now in Inverclyde we have opportunities to bring jobs to the area. I get so frustrated when I hear people talking down the ability of local employers. The most recent and most high profile case is Ferguson Marine. It is almost four years since Jim McColl saved Fergusons. From day one there were people prepared to say it would fail. The shipyards in the lower Clyde had been closed one by one and the areas intrinsic connection to shipbuilding had been eroded almost to the point of non existence. New tech industry was the thing and shipbuilding was perceived as old school. When Fergusons was saved some people felt that all we were doing was putting off the inevitable. Four years has passed and in that time rumours and speculation of redundancies and closures have been rife. Not all make it to the mainstream media. I am talking as someone who lives and works in the area. These are conversations from pubs, supermarkets and school gates and too often they were tainted by negativity. Meanwhile after starting with seven people Ferguson Marine now employ over three hundred and fifty including forty apprentices. That’s three hundred and fifty households benefiting and communities that gain positivity.
Ronnie Cowan MP
These past four years have been difficult but during that time the yard has been transformed into a world class facility. They have work on going, work in the pipeline and bids out for civil and military contracts. I am not saying it’s perfect or that mistakes were not made but there is far more good being done than credit is given for. Too many people are quick to criticise or maybe more accurately damn with faint praise. Negative and ill informed publicity damages the reputation of the yard. Talking it down, keeping it small, undermines the potential of the yard, its ability to bid, to recruit and ultimately to be successful. Ferguson Marine is now a modern functioning shipyard, employing highly skilled and motivated people. It has pulled itself back from the abyss and has a bright future. That future will benefit Inverclyde in some very obvious ways and also many intangible aspects of our community. How do we measure confidence, stability and aspiration? We as a community should be rallying to support Ferguson Marine and give it every chance to expand and grow. They have shown their commitment to Inverclyde, the Scottish Government have shown their commitment to Ferguson Marine, now it’s time that Inverclyde reciprocated.

I’m dreaming of a Cloch Christmas! ❄
❄
❄
The View at the Cloch has a new lease of life; with the bar and restaurant now lovingly renovated making this landmark venue an ideal place for a Christmas party. Resident DJs and everyone’s favourites, Mark and Bernie, will make sure it is a great night out and the chef and the kitchen team will be serving a delicious threecourse festive menu, with a complimentary glass of wine. With a price of £25 you have a great location, entertainment and a wonderful meal – all the makings of a memorable night out. It is not called The View at The Cloch for nothing this has to be one of the best locations on the Clyde. By daylight you have stunning panoramas of the mighty river and across to Argyll. It is amazing how far you can see. But at night The View at The Cloch becomes magical, the lights twinkle on land and sea and in wintertime, when there is snow on the hills on a clear night – well you wouldn’t be surprised if you saw a sleigh flying through the sky, pulled by reindeer. Parties at The View at the Cloch are as fantastic inside

as the location suggests,
The hardworking, friendly staff at The View at the Cloch produce quality meals which are winning rave reviews online: ‘an ideal location to bring friends and family to, for a lovely meal, drinks and a laugh. The owners are extremely helpful and I also took a party of 16 there for a meal. The service was outstanding and very prompt. The atmosphere is very friendly as well.’ Just off the A770, by the iconic lighthouse and within the Cloch Caravan Park The View at the Cloch is a venue which has a special place in the heart of its local community; catering for functions such as Christenings and funerals. The décor, spaciousness and the warm friendly welcome are all the hallmarks for a special occasion. And nevermore so than at Christmas; check availability for your bookings via the The View at the Cloch Facebook page or call Craig on 01475 649154 and make this Christmas memorable with a visit to The View.
Celebrate Christmas in style this year with us and dance the night away with our resident DJ’s. Bringing you a selection of great music from all decades and of course your favourite Christmas hits! Cloch Caravan Park, Gourock Bar & Restaurant

The nights are fair drawing in...
By Kieran Gallagher
I have always liked the month of October. Autumn is underway and nature provides some quite superb displays of colours, both in our gardens and in the wild. However, I dread late October and the changing of the clocks. The lack of daylight is the worst thing, for me. If, like me, you work during the day, then the opporunty to spend time in the garden, or anywhere outside, is limited to days off only – it is just too dark to do anything after 5pm. I prefer to get the chores out of the way before the clocks change and there is plenty to do.

Cardwell Garden Centre
First off, clear out any remaining summer bedding plants, if you have not already done so. Assuming they are not diseased, you can compost the plants yourself or place them in your brown bin. If you plan to compost them yourself, cut up plants into small pieces to speed up the breaking down process. Torn up newspapers, grass clippings and uncooked waste from the kitchen can also be included. Any compost from tubs or baskets can be used as top dressing in beds and borders. Autumn and winter bedding plants are now for sale at Cardwell Garden Centre and provide some much needed brightness over the darker months. There are lots to choose from and they can be planted in tubs, baskets or broders without much frost protection.
@clydelifemag
Equally, summer and autumn bulbs that are not going be naturalised (like daffodils and snowdrops) should be lifted now. Clean excess soil from them, trim dead foliage and store somewhere dark and cool, but frost free. Hessian or onion bags are ideal for storage as they allow air to circulate. Beware of rodents looking for food in the winter. Spring flowering bulbs can be planted now, with the exception of tulips which are best left until November. Again, bulbs can be planted almost anywhere. Layering bulbs that have sequential flowering in a tub makes for a colourful display over a longer period without much input. Autumn used to be known as ‘natures time for planting’. This harks back to the days before trees and shrubs were grown in pots. Instead, most were grown in the ground and sold as ‘bare root’ stock. Although we now have the luxury of planting whenever we want, autumn is still a great time for planting new trees, bushes and shrubs in the garden. Dig a hole around one and a half to twice the size of the pot your plant comes in and add in some fresh growing medium of your choice, with a little bone meal mixed in. Use tree stakes or other supports for taller plants and trees so that the roots have time to ‘bed in’ over the windier winter months. Pruning can also be done now, but it is becoming more common for many plants to be trimmed in early spring. The benefits of this is that the additional foliage can help protect from the cold and provide some winter shelter for the wildlife. Plants like laurels and climbing roses are best done now, however. You can also move perennials at this time of year, assuming it is practical to do so. Carefully work around the root ball with a garden fork to loosen the soil around the roots. It can then be lifted by hand or with a spade and re-planted following the advice above.
an essential part of the modern garden. Food should be high fat content, like suet balls or nuts, and be topped up daily. Bird baths should have clean water and remember to break any ice that forms overnight. As always, if you have any questions pop into Cardwell and let us help.
Keep the lawn clear of leaves, branches and other debris and an application of autumn lawn feed will help the grass over winter. Finally, spare a thought for the wildlife this winter. Insect shelters, hedgehog homes and other wildlife friendly structures are available at Cardwell or can be made yourself. As autumn progresses the availability of natural food for wild birds becomes scarce. Some good bird feeders or a bird table are Clyde Life Magazine

GET ON YOUR BIKE! All too often, we choose the easiest way to travel from one place to another - the car. However, many of us often ignore that walking or cycling is the cheapest and healthiest way to commute. ‘Community Tracks Inverclyde’ project exists to raise awareness and encourage people to choose other ways of travelling rather than opting for the car. We’re supported by the Climate Challenge Fund (part of Keep Scotland Beautiful), Smarter Choices, Inverclyde Community Development Trust and Inverclyde Council. We organise various events and activities in the Inverclyde area including walking and cycling tours, maintenance classes and our popular bike doctor events. We’re very excited to announce further events this Autumn/Winter from October 2018 onwards, such as our ‘Better Biking’ initiative in collaboration with The Bothy. The Bothy is a new project from which acts as a welcoming central point for walkers and cyclists in the area, looking for inspiration, help and advice. The ‘Better Biking’ initiative runs every Tuesday through October, with its core aim to help develop your cycling skills and confidence on two wheels! There’s also the opportunity to try an electric bike Pop along to The Bothy at Gourock Train Station any Thursday from 1pm to 4pm and give one a try - it’s free! Following on from the first commuter breakfast at the end of September, there’s a couple more planned in conjunction with The Bothy - further details can be younf on our website. Keep an eye on our website for activities running through October and November!
What is Community Tracks Inverclyde? Community Tracks is an ‘Active Travel Hub’ community focused project that aims to increase the number of people traveling by foot or bike. The key aims of the project include:
• Commuter Breakfast - come along for some free breakfast and advice on commuting on two feet or two wheels • ‘Better Biking’ - develop your biking skills and become a more confident cyclist • Donate Your Bike - if you have an unwanted bike or a bike that is no longer needed, donate your bike to Community Tracks and we will recycle them for a good home - just in time to make the perfect Christmas gift! • Electric Bike Trial - have a go on an electric bike for FREE, every Thursday through October! • Bike Maintenance Classes - look out for dates coming soon on our website For full details about upcoming events, please visit our website www.communitytracks.net or visit our Facebook page - CommunityTracksInverclyde Book onto any of our upcoming events by contacting our project administrator Scott directly Scott.deveney@the-trust.org.uk or 01475 553384.
Donate an
unwanted bike We’ll give it back INTO the community this Christmas to a new owner
• Reducing waste/CO2 emission • Developing skills • Promoting social inclusion • Enhancing employability through developing skills
How can you get involved? There are a number of events planned through til the end of the year out the summer that you can get involved with free of charge, such as:
