SBS18: celebrating sailing, the sea and life in style By Joanne Simms
The big weekend 12-14 October is the one we’ve all been waiting for when Kip Marina hosts Scotland’s Boat Show 2018. SBS18 is the largest boat show in Scotland and the largest brokerage (pre-owned) boat show in the UK where the sailing world comes to do business and we all can enjoy a spectacular day out. Never been sailing before? The RYA Scotland’s free ‘taster sessions’ are a 30-minute hands-on experience, with experts, in a variety of craft in the safety of the marina; book early via the RYA Scotland website and scotlandsboatshow.co.uk.
Wander along the marina pontoons or see the displays on shore of Scotland’s biggest selection of new and pre-owned boats; more than 130 boats are on display - everything from a £500 dinghy to a £1m luxury powerboat. You can experience speeds of up to 120mph, and forces of 6g during cornering, as you race over the Clyde with Gordon Cook Racing Team! Book your ride at www.2seaterF1.com or on the day at the RYA Pavilion.
See the show from the air with Heliscot and Adventure001, flying at 1,000 feet out over Gourock and on over the Clyde and back. Advance bookings via www. scotlandsboatshow.co.uk or on the day at the HeliScot check in.
Or try paddleboarding with Glasgow’s www.westendadventure. co.uk on Saturday and Sunday at £15 for wet suit hire and tuition. For the mobility impaired, Clyde Muirshiel’s wheelyboat Discovery has taster sessions too, and lookout for the Ocean Explorer yacht.

What goes up but doesn’t come down? I recently got chatting to an older gentleman while I was out with my two daughters in the West End. We were both laughing as my children were playing, as he turned to go about his errands he tripped and stumbled (even though the ground was flat and, surprisingly, unhindered by the typical Glasgow potholes). Thankfully, he managed to keep his balance, I made sure he was fine and asked if he needed any help. To my offer of help he jokingly asked: ‘What goes up but doesn’t come down?’, ‘AGE!’ he laughed and, a little unsteadily, walked away. This got me thinking about the many older adults I have had the pleasure of helping over the years. So many of us link ‘Age’ and ‘Falling’ together, thinking that falling and poor balance are an inevitable part of getting older and that ‘nothing can be done about it’. Whilst there is a correlation between age and risk of falls, from my experience, there is almost always something that can be done about it. Everybody is an individual and the reasons why people have problems can vary. For example, the reasons someone has fairly frequent little slips, trips, and stumbles can be quite different to someone being plagued by frequent falls. This is why getting the right advice, support and guidance from an expert, like myself, is very important to get to the root cause of the problem and get you back doing what you enjoy. Below is a checklist of some of the basics that you should be aware of if you, or someone you care about, is having difficulty -
3) Have your eyesight checked to make sure your prescription is right for you. 4) Decluttering of your home to remove any loose rugs, frayed carpet, trailing wires, etc. 5) Some good, bright lightbulbs can be very helpful, especially in darker rooms or hallways. 6) Try and take some regular extra activity or exercise to help maintain your muscle and bone health.
What can I do next? If you would like to arrange a free callback with me, please email me at fraser@simpsonphysio.co.uk or you can give me a call on 07988 015190. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
1) Have you had blackouts or dizziness causing a fall? If so, you really should speak to your GP to have this investigated 2) Do your slippers and shoes fit properly? You would not believe the number of people who fall because of poor fitting footwear! West End Life Magazine

Going wild in the
West End The evenings are darker and trees are bare but you will be amazed at how much wildlife you will see - and hear!
By Joanne Simms
Glasgow has always been a city with a big welcome and that is as true for wildlife as it is for people. This is even more so in the West End with the River Kelvin, Kelvingrove and Mansfield Parks and the Glasgow Botanic Gardens plus the many green spaces and large number of trees dotted throughout the area. Garden birdfeeders will be rewarded with a host of visitors. You will see plenty more in the sky as starlings begin their autumn roosts and perform incredible flights. They flock together in ever larger numbers as the weeks go on. These ‘murmurations’ give the birds safety in numbers from predators.
Otters
Otters have been seen on the River Kelvin for some years now. They do not hibernate so now is a good time to see them, when undergrowth on river banks is dying back, especially at daw or dusk.
Foxes Urban foxes often look far better fed than their country cousins; the pickings in town are much better; remember the advice from Glasgow City Council is not to feed or encourage them.
Historical Association talk Thursday 11th October. West End Life Magazine
Autumn is when fox families start to break up and the cubs are told to go find their own way in the world. The split begins in October; November sees the mature adults begin to fight with the younger as they start to disperse from their childhood habitats. Foxes are very territorial and the disputes come to a peak in December when you hear the most noise from their shouting matches and fights.
Scottish Wildlife Trust For more information visit: scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/ local-group/glasgow/#group-info Hedgehogs have also been given this status; numbers nationwide have been dropping drastically for decades. One success story has been the peregrine, which is a regular in the Glasgow skies as it likes tower blocks and tall buildings just as much as it does cliff faces.

School Placing Requests For most parents the start of the school term is often an exciting one especially if you are the proud parent or guardian about to watch your child embark on the next chapter of their life be it at primary or secondary school. Unfortunately, this is not the case for every parent. Each year around June we are instructed by parents seeking advice on placing school requests that have refused by the Local Authority. Parents and guardians often make requests for a variety of reasons and if the request is refused by the Local Authority there is the right to appeal to the Appeal Committee. The Appeal requires to be submitted within 28 days of the decision. The Appeal Committee will be asked to consider the placing request refusal and decide if the Local Authority applied the correct criteria. If the Appeal Committee uphold the decision of the Local Authority and refuse the child a place a further appeal can be made to the local Sheriff Court. There are strict time limits and any appeal to the Sheriff Court requires to be lodged within 28 days of the Committee decision. It is important at this stage to seek advice as sufficient grounds of appeal must be identified. This can often be an anxious time for all involved and the courts are well equipped to allocate hearings as priority to ensure matters are dealt prior to the school term. Very recently our Firm was instructed in a case where the hearing took place the day prior to the school term commencing. Thankfully, the parent received the decision just after lunch, providing some time to buy in the school uniform for the big day ahead! This article has been framed as a description of the procedure involved. Should you require any advice in this area please do not hesitate to contact our solicitors at McIntosh McCann. Call of the Wild Unleash your inner animal instinct with A/W’s biggest trend. If you choose to listen to the call, then you’ll find yourself prowling around the shops, tempted by the stunning selection of faux animal prints that are featured on just about everything this season. From clothes and accessories all the way through to home furnishings, you really will be spoiled for choice. Animal prints are a classic that come around every few seasons, so although not groundbreaking, some would say (myself included), that they never really go out of style. An item of animal print clothing will always look chic when worn in the right way and with the right attitude. DVF, otherwise known as Diane Von Fustenberg, whose clothes are featured here, was a designer who really stood out on the catwalk with her bold take on feline fashion. Her bright yellow leopard print, together with striking geometric patterns, colourful checks, and actual bird prints all came together to achieve maximum effect. This clashing of colours, patterns, prints, textures and even animals, makes for a very modern way to wear this trend. Other designers including Victoria
Beckham, Michael Kors and Max Mara kept to more traditional and less edgy designs by concentrating solely on the classic black and brown leopard print. However, its not just leopard print that’s having a moment - many

different species from the animal kingdom are also in fashion (as long as they have a fashionable coat of course) - there’s Cheetah and Jaguar patterns, Tiger and Zebra stripes and, if it appeals, there’s Snake prints as well. @westendlife
The teen STYLE Files Plaid Parade
It’s easy to build an outfit around animal prints. Use them as a statement piece and let a bold full length coat, cosy sweater or sharp pencil skirt take centre stage by wearing with other only black clothes. Alternatively, take a walk on the wild side, by taking inspiration from DVF and mix and match with lots of other different kinds of prints and textures. Otherwise, make your outfit pop simply with the addition of some well chosen accessories, like animal print gloves, bags, belts, hats, shoes or scarves.
From punk inspired tartan blouses to preppy checked skirts, animal prints aren’t the only patterns dominating a/w 2018. Whether you prefer bold colourful checks or more demure tones, a statement plaid piece is sure to liven up any wardrobe.
Fashion & Beauty Notes... Whether it’s in the name of fashion, or just for keeping warm, hats are set to be autumn’s biggest accessory trend. From knitted balaclava’s to chic berets, look out for some pretty trendy headgear when you’re next at the shops!
Hair
You know how there’s always that one item of clothing from your past that you wished you still had? Well, for me, it was a truly stunning silk, leopard print designer blouse with full pussy bow from the 90’s. I’m under no illusions - it wouldn’t even fit me now - but it ticked every single box and would look so good on my daughter. Aargh...

Ian Buxton Birlinn £12.99
ISBN: 9781780275444
Penguin Books £6.99
Available as an ebook
It’s a tough job, but someone should do it. We’ve seen a revival in the fortunes of gin and now rum looks set to lose its yo-ho-ho-anda-bottle-of image. Best selling author on spirits of the drinkable kind, Ian Buxton takes a look at the new artisan brands being created within the crafts drinks movement as well as established old brands in a hardback book published this summer. Whisky is a national treasure; Edinburgh is famous for gin and our seafaring tradition gives Scotland a long-established link to rum. Ian Buxton also takes a look at rum cocktails. Mojito anyone?

Louis de Bernières Vintage Publishing £16.99 Also available as an ebook & audio
Headline Home £16.99
ISBN: 9781911215639 A new book by Louis de Bernières, of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin fame, is something to be welcomed. This one is set in the interwar years both in England and abroad and tells the tale of Daniel and Rosie with their troubled marriage in a rapidly changing, unsettled, world. They move to Ceylon with their little daughter to start a new life in a story which is by turns humorous and tragic, gripping and touching. Buy book, make big mug of tea or pour even larger glass of wine, switch off mobile and lose yourself in the pages.

Let’s all have an awesome autumn It can be a little daunting as the days shorten and temperatures dip but here are some ideas to get a great autumn under way, with some of Scotland’s best culinary delights. By Joanne Simms
Super soup suppers! Scottish cuisine is more than a match for the chillier days. What is more comforting than a big bowl of soup? We have some excellent traditional recipes, beginning, of course with the ubiquitous Scotch broth. Pick one, research different recipe variations, and make it one of your signature dishes. Cullen Skink, from Cullen in Moray, is full of potatoes, smoked haddock, milk and cream for luxury. What’s not to love?
Partan Bree is a classic form the north east, and the rest of the world might call this crab bisque. Hairst Bree, harvest broth, AKA Hotch Potch. The name is Scots for harvest broth, so there is big a clue to the main ingredients. Last but not least Scotch broth. Everyone and their granny have their own version of this soup, but it is fair to say that plenty of barley and mutton are compulsory.
Cock-a-leekie soup can be found in the earliest recipe books, but seems to have fallen out of fashion. As the name says, chicken, leeks and some would argue a prune in the bottom of every bowl.

Porridge
Coorie doon!
Another great Scottish staple. ‘Pimp your porridge’ with cinnamon, fruit, nutmeg, honey, golden syrup, dried fruit, whatever takes your fancy. A swirl of cream and a wee teaspoon (or so) of whisky will cure all chills and ills.
Should this be what we call our version of hygge? Cuddle-in on the sofa, under a big blanket or throw, with some lovely flannel pyjamas, cosy socks and a big mug of cocoa, or something stronger.
Celebrate Glasgow’s seafaring history with a Merchant seaman’s porridge made with water but drowned in evaporated milk, or a huge squeeze of condensed milk from a tube. Slow-release carbs and a giant sugar hit: just what you needed during the cold night watches.
A wee dram The weather outside is getting colder and wetter as autumn gets to work but that’s why God gave us whisky, log burners and good company. Slàinte!
Gin toddy Edinburgh was always famous for its gin, and the drink has come back into its own again. Add perfecting the art of making a gin toddy to your to-do list.
Candles Add a comforting glow to the room and a gorgeous scent with candles. A snuffer and wick-trimmer and secure holders contribute to the look and also the safety.

The nights are fair drawing in...
By Kieran Gallagher
I have always liked the month of October. Autumn is underway and nature provides some quite superb displays of colours, both in our gardens and in the wild. However, I dread late October and the changing of the clocks. The lack of daylight is the worst thing, for me. If, like me, you work during the day, then the opporunty to spend time in the garden, or anywhere outside, is limited to days off only – it is just too dark to do anything after 5pm. I prefer to get the chores out of the way before the clocks change and there is plenty to do.

Cardwell Garden Centre
First off, clear out any remaining summer bedding plants, if you have not already done so. Assuming they are not diseased, you can compost the plants yourself or place them in your brown bin. If you plan to compost them yourself, cut up plants into small pieces to speed up the breaking down process. Torn up newspapers, grass clippings and uncooked waste from the kitchen can also be included. Any compost from tubs or baskets can be used as top dressing in beds and borders. Autumn and winter bedding plants are now for sale at Cardwell Garden Centre and provide some much needed brightness over the darker months. There are lots to choose from and they can be planted in tubs, baskets or broders without much frost protection.

Equally, summer and autumn bulbs that are not going be naturalised (like daffodils and snowdrops) should be lifted now. Clean excess soil from them, trim dead foliage and store somewhere dark and cool, but frost free. Hessian or onion bags are ideal for storage as they allow air to circulate. Beware of rodents looking for food in the winter. Spring flowering bulbs can be planted now, with the exception of tulips which are best left until November. Again, bulbs can be planted almost anywhere. Layering bulbs that have sequential flowering in a tub makes for a colourful display over a longer period without much input. Autumn used to be known as ‘natures time for planting’. This harks back to the days before trees and shrubs were grown in pots. Instead, most were grown in the ground and sold as ‘bare root’ stock. Although we now have the luxury of planting whenever we want, autumn is still a great time for planting new trees, bushes and shrubs in the garden. Dig a hole around one and a half to twice the size of the pot your plant comes in and add in some fresh growing medium of your choice, with a little bone meal mixed in. Use tree stakes or other supports for taller plants and trees so that the roots have time to ‘bed in’ over the windier winter months. Pruning can also be done now, but it is becoming more common for many plants to be trimmed in early spring. The benefits of this is that the additional foliage can help protect from the cold and provide some winter shelter for the wildlife. Plants like laurels and climbing roses are best done now, however. You can also move perennials at this time of year, assuming it is practical to do so. Carefully work around the root ball with a garden fork to loosen the soil around the roots. It can then be lifted by hand or with a spade and re-planted following the advice above.
an essential part of the modern garden. Food should be high fat content, like suet balls or nuts, and be topped up daily. Bird baths should have clean water and remember to break any ice that forms overnight. As always, if you have any questions pop into Cardwell and let us help.
Keep the lawn clear of leaves, branches and other debris and an application of autumn lawn feed will help the grass over winter. Finally, spare a thought for the wildlife this winter. Insect shelters, hedgehog homes and other wildlife friendly structures are available at Cardwell or can be made yourself. As autumn progresses the availability of natural food for wild birds becomes scarce. Some good bird feeders or a bird table are West End Life Magazine
