george square come to the party! Article kindly provided by M.H.Davidson and R.H.F. Binns Glasgow Historical Association.
Just step into George Square and join in the party - the statues are having their own!
T
he fairy lights are now on to delight young families. Then there’s the Christmas Fair with muffins and mulled wine. Wandering amongst the stalls one becomes aware of the statues’ obscure figures. The young Queen Victoria is here with her beloved Prince Albert. On the tele, “The Young Queen” shows Victoria falling in love. In the Square the equestrian statues of Victoria and Albert appear side by side at the time of their visit to Glasgow in 1849. She is wearing a stunning long dress. Victoria’s romantic appearance in Glasgow is very different from her dumpy image.

Parties go with a swing, when friends share their enthusiasms. Victoria like others was a fan of the Waverley novels by Sir Walter Scott at the centre of the Square. Not far off are the poet Thomas Campbell and Glasgow’s first MP James Oswald both of whom stumped up for Scott’s statue.

Close by Victoria and Albert is their friend Robert Peel. Further away is Victoria’s dashing hero Colin Campbell. Victoria has her back to Gladstone whom she couldn’t abide. Meeting someone you don’t like adds spice to the occasion! To hear the bells at Hogmanay crowds foregather in the Square. In January 1941, Churchill hosted an altogether different kind of

The finest statue in the Square (1819) is Sir John Moore, killed in action at Corunna, His bronze statue is cast from surplus materiel from twenty-two years of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Moore’s statue reminds us of the biblical beating of swords into plough shares presaging a century of peace and prosperity. @westendlife

Keep active indoors this winter...
read on for some simple tips to help keep you more active and less likely to fall this winter As a physiotherapist that works a lot with older adults, I see many problems that people need help with. Over the winter months there is always a sharp rise in the number of people who fall both inside their own homes as well as out in the snow and ice. Staying indoors more is a big problem that many older adults face over the winter months. I should clarify that statement, it’s not really the staying indoors that’s the problem, it is that it is very easy to become less active when we stay indoors. Unfortunately, being less active means that we can lose muscle strength, exacerbating problems with walking and balance which can lead to falls. Here are some simple exercises that you can do in your own home to help maintain your muscle strength and help your balance. 1)
Make a point of doing some extra walking around your home regularly. This can be as simple as a few times up and down a hallway, or in and out to the kitchen.
2)
Stand up/sit down from your chair – this is a deep squat and for some people even 2 or 3 can be hard work, so please be sensible with the number of repetitions and go slowly.
All of these exercises should be comfortable and pain-free. A rule of thumb is to do each one (other than the extra walking) for about 1 minute and managing to add this in 3 or 4 times a day. Remember, everyone reading this is an individual with individual needs. Very often, you need a treatment approach tailored specifically to you and the difficulties you are having.
What can I do next? If you would like to arrange a free callback with me, please email me at fraser@simpsonphysio.co.uk or you can give me a call on 07988 015190. I hope you like the article and I look forward to hearing from you. Fraser Simpson Chartered Physiotherapist
3) Practice side-stepping at the kitchen worktop so you can use your hands for support if needed. 4) Marching-on-the-spot – again, do this at your kitchen worktop so you can use your hands if needed.

We are living in the part of Glasgow that the guide books rave about because of the eclectic range of first-class shops, services and entertainment. And that’s not to mention all the fantastic places to eat and drink - and most of them are within easy walking distances of home, or the subway or a taxi rank. How many privately-owned shops can you think of in the heart of the city centre? It is now predominantly in the hands of the massive national and international retail chains. Now take a look around the West End. Yes, there are some nationally-recognisable brands here and there, but there is also an explosion of so many different types of independent businesses. This is how shopping used to be; it is how shopping should be! Do you know that Byres Road and the lanes are home to nearly 300 businesses? You name it, you will find it. Many are run by the people who make the goods themselves. The area is also home to specialist repair shops which will fix anything from your bike to your antiques brooch. And look out for the incredible mix of retro clothes on sale. Your Christmas feast will also be amazing if you shop at many ofWest the artisan food shops in the area. End Life Magazine

Making a Will –
A New Year Resolution With the year almost at an end, now would be a good time to think about adding making a Will to your list of New Year resolutions, or if you already have a Will, consideration should be given to whether your existing Will should be updated if circumstances have changed. Not only does making a Will allow you to leave your estate to those who you wish to benefit from it on your death, but it also makes it easier for your family to implement your wishes on your death. As well as dealing with your estate, your Will can also include other provisions, such as who you wish your children to reside with in the event of premature death. This is a reason in itself to make a Will, even if you do not have an estate of much or any value. Your solicitor will be able to fully advise you in relation to these matters. If you are making a Will as a private fee payer, you should expect to pay between £100 and £200. Alternatively, the Scottish Legal Aid Board will meet the costs of you making a Will, if you qualify for legal advice and assistance on account of your income and capital. Any costs that you do require to meet in respect of making your Will, will be invaluable in respect of the benefit. West End Life Magazine

theStyle files Have yourself a cosy and comfortable Christmas.... by Marilyn Thompson
Comfort and style are words to keep in mind this festive season and to pull off the perfect polished, yet comfy look for all your Christmas requirements, you’ll need some essentials that you can build an outfit around.
A classic coat is a necessity and when worn with a luxe cashmere polo neck, black jeans and comfy boots, it’s an elegant look that will take you almost anywhere, from Christmas shopping and visiting relatives, the heart warming carol service or your traditional Christmas Day walk. With the addition of some well chosen stylish accessories, like a cosy hat and scarf and some leather gloves, you can add your own unique sense of style and mix and match to suit each occasion. When entertaining at home, you can’t beat the classic combination of a silk blouse and some easy fit but classic cut trousers, the perfect mix of comfort and style. Best of all, you get to keep your slippers on! (Hallelujah)
Get organised early, shopping done, presents wrapped, tree decorated, table set....then you can hopefully relax and actually enjoy the special spirit of Christmas - light a scented festive candle and snuggle up in your Christmasy Fairisle sweater with a cup of tea and a mince pie, peacefully contemplating, reading your favourite book or binging on Christmas movies. However you choose to relax is up to you - the important thing is that you find the time to do it before the magic of Christmas disappears for another year, and in its place, you just feel slightly bewildered.
Of course, you’ll probably need some form of party wear, but given that this is all about comfort, if you do need a bit more pazzaz then why not just add some sparkly statement earrings or jazz up an existing outfit with an oversized brooch. Instead of torturing your feet by squashing them into high

@westendlife
heels, why not try a pair of flats decorated with glitzy embellishments. Little things like this this may be all that’s required to add a touch of relaxed glamour when needed, without sacrificing comfort, or adding yet another sparkly creation to the once worn stash of ‘Christmas Past’ outfits.
The teen STYLE Files Sparkle all the way!
One of the biggest Christmas party wear trends of 2018 is the 1960’s, so embrace sequins, the miniest of mini’s, the sheerest denier tights you can find and pointed kitten heels for the perfect show stopping look. If the 60’s aren’t your thing, then anything that shimmies with sparkle and shine will do the trick.
Fashion & Beauty Notes... Keep cold weather dry lips at bay with this Barry M lip scrub. £4.99
When it comes to clothes, surely the most comfortable and cosy part of Christmas has got to be new pyjamas. Is there a better feeling, after a long day of cooking, cleaning and entertaining, than the pleasure of easing yourself into your soft and comforting pj’s - I don’t think so. In the run up to Christmas, it’s so easy to lose sight of what’s really important, ‘the big stuff’ - like faith, love, kindness and compassion - let’s not forget to put them on our to do’ list.
Merry Christmas!

he idea of the four-gift rule has taken off over the past few years as a way to help curb Christmas excess but the real Christmas-aholics amongst us do tend to think this a bit sanctimonious, so why not widen the net a bit to a seven-point guide? The difference between want and need can be difficult to explain to small children and spoilt brats and remember that brattish behaviour does not stop once you reach adulthood; it’s just that we usually use more unpleasant words to describe it.
Want Needs are necessities and essential for survival and wants are what we desire; we might need a new winter coat but we want it to be top of the range, designer-labelled. The amount of cash available for a gift can lift it out of need and into want.
26 | West End Life – Christmas 2018
Remember that wants can change over time and differ from person to person and your fur-trimmed, hooded, down-filled vision of bliss might make someone else look like a scruffy cat sitting on top of a walking duvet.
Need A gift that meets a need can be the most thoughtful of all; it shows that you have used both time and empathy to consider your gift purchase. Most of us in this country are lucky enough to have all our basic needs met, but it is very gratifying when you hear someone say, ‘Oh, thank you, I so needed one of those.’
Wear The queues in stores in the New Year are testimony that buying a gift for someone to wear can be a tricky business. If you don’t know the right size then don’t buy it and remember: pale olive green might be your favourite colour but it could give someone else the complexion of a corpse, so stick to neutral shades.
Read If it is the latest best seller then they might have read it already. Just because you love a particular series of zombie-apocalypse-romances it doesn’t mean everyone else will and if they have a hobby/ passion then chances are they own it. Gift vouchers are not a cop-out: any passionate reader will tell you there is nothing better than walking into the shop with money to blow on books. Or find a really old second-hand book on their favourite subject; they will enjoy comparing and contrasting across the decades.
@westendlife
Now into this mix here are three new headings, use these to help hone your four-gift rule to perfection.
Experience
Possess Some gifts are for us to keep; when we are younger we do not own as much and as we age our homes become more and more full. If you know an older relative who is trying to downsize don’t buy them something they have to own unless it falls into the need category.
Consume This is fast becoming a favourite gift category especially in the food and drink sector. A treat of expensive coffee, chocolate, wine, whisky, olive oil or other cooking ingredients is often welcomed. This is a firm favourite with older people who might have enough possessions and if you know someone who is a bit cash-strapped, a little bit of luxury is always welcome. If buying toiletries or cosmetics check out a more up market version, or top up their supplies of what they already use.
It is said that ‘millennials’ are more experience-driven than previous generations. Theatre or concert tickets, cookery lessons, a meal out, driving courses, balloon rides or a nice wedge of euros or dollars to spend how they like on their upcoming holiday are the way to go. Asking them to send you a photo of what they did or choose shows you are genuinely interested.
And finally . . . . Who was it who said it its better to give than receive? Turns out it was Jesus, check out Acts 20:35, ‘we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ (NIV) Make sure one of the gifts you give this Christmas is to a charity and explain what you are doing and why you are doing it to your kids – the gift of kindness will never go out of fashion or be exchanged for the right size or colour.

Choosing the right Chr Make sure you ask the right questions before you buy your tree!
By Kieran Gallagher Cardwell Garden Centre
A
s Christmas approaches thoughts stray from the garden to more pressing matters, particularly if you have children. Preparing for a visit from Santa Claus will take priority over gardening.
fragrance into the house. The hyacinths, especially, have a powerful scent that is hard to miss and can be nought ready to flower.
December is a quiet month for the average gardener and some basic regular maintenance will keep things ticking over nicely. Even the humble houseplant is happy with a small amount of water every few days, depending on your heating at home.
The delicate plants need to kept at steady room temperature and transported and sold accordingly. I would avoid buying plants located next to a door or refrigerated area. Your plants should have protection whilst you take it home from the shop, usually a plant sleeve. I might be biased, but I buy my poinsettia at Cardwell!
Poinsettias, Amaryllis and prepared Hyacinth bulbs are all ideal ways to introduce some colour and
Poinsettias require a little more care and you should select your Poinsettia from your retailer carefully.
One of the most important purchases at this time of year for the home is the Christmas tree and cut or real trees remain popular. The are several different varieties of pine trees available, so the days of losing all the needles from your tree two weeks before Christmas are a thing of the past. The best for needle retention is the Nordman Fir. The Nordman has been available for a number of years, but the quality of the trees varied a lot. It was very difficult to get a good shaped Nordman above 6 feet or 2 metres tall. At Cardwell we have been buying all our Nordmans from the same Dumfries based plantation for around 10 years. The quality and consistency of the trees is unsurpassed by anything I have seen in some 25 years of selling them. The Nordman Fir is one of the most expensive of the trees you can buy, but it really is a case of ‘you get what you pay for’ if you want to avoid problems with sharp needles and needle drop. Of course, there are alternatives to the Nordman, most commonly the traditional Norway Spruce and Fraser Fir.

ristmas Tree for you Fraser Firs are a good ‘in between’ option if the other two do not appeal. It has quite soft needles and has decent needle retention. The Norway Spruce is the traditional style of Christmas tree. It has the worst needle retention of the three varieties and has firm pointed needles that anyone who has handled them will be all to aware of. However, our customers like them and they remain popular. There are a few things to be aware of when buying and caring for your tree. I would avoid buying a wrapped tree as there is no way of telling what shape it will be once it has been in a tree stand for a few days. Make sure you see the tree unwrapped and the shop should be able to wrap it again for transport or have it delivered. When removing the wrapping from your tree always do it from the bottom up. This avoids pulling against the natural shape of the branches and pulling needles off unnecessarily. Buy a fresh tree. As soon as a tree is cut down it starts to die from the base of the trunk. Trees that are harvested, stored and shipped may be weeks old by the time they are available for sale. As I mentioned earlier, our trees travel only a couple of hours to get to Cardwell, so we know they are fresh. If possible, keep the tree outside until you want to put it up. Removing the wrapping at this point will allow the tree to ‘settle’ which just means that the branches will lower slightly as the tree regains it’s natural shape. On most cut trees the base of the trunk will have started to harden. Cut off this part to leave fresh wood and once it is in a stand that will hold water the tree will actually take the water on and prolong its life while in your home. It is the same as you would do to cut flowers. Adding a little granulated sugar to the water will also help, but you must remember to check the water level and top it up as required. Avoid placing the tree to close to a radiator if possible. Follow these simple steps and your tree should see you through Christmas, but please remember each tree is unique. It is possible that the tree will not last as long as expected, but if this happens very quickly I would advise you to speak to the store where you purchased it. They should be sympathetic if, like us, they are confident in the quality of their tree.
I do hope that you all have a great Christmas and a very happy New Year, from myself and everyone at Cardwell Garden Centre! West End Life Magazine
