Improve your health and yourself! A New Year’s resolution is for 365 days, not just Hogmanay, so keep on keeping on because spring will soon be here and remember to think holistically
N
ew Year resolutions are just common sense; ask any of us and we all want to be the right weight, fit and healthy, doing well in our jobs and have our finances in equally good health. That much is obvious – who would actively wish ill upon themselves? But sometimes we get so caught up in the complexities of living day-to-day that good intentions can get lost in the fog and we just drift; bad habits become ingrained and that drifting can take us further and further away from where we want to be. Chances are that since those virtuous announcements at the start of the year things might have slipped a little ...or may be a lot!
There is one important thing to remember – do not give up! We are only human, and we all trip up now and then, so be kind to yourself. There might have been a few hangovers since New Year’s Day; a couple of ciggies, a heroic amount of chocolate scoffed or the eating of a family-sized something all by yourself. Maybe you turned over in bed and went back to sleep when you heard the rain on the windows just when you had been doing so well with your running schedule. Well so what! Don’t beat yourself up; just pick yourself up, dust yourself down, grab hold of the cliché of your choice and get back on the horse. It’s a long way to go to Hogmanay 2019 and there will be plenty of times you might falter but keep going and you will find there will be far more times that you succeed. That’s why an annual taking stock ‘at the bells’ has always been so good for us and always will. What is best for your personality? Are you someone who has to go at something full-on or does slow and steady win your race? It is all a question of balance. Chances are if you are unhappy in one area of your life, say work, or a relationship, the stress might show up in your eating habits or drinking . . . but then again are those choices in turn making you unhappy in your relationship or at work.
6 | West End Life – February/March 2019
@westendlife
A good way to keep your resolutions going throughout 2019 is to look at the whole picture. What do you need to do to break your own chain or spiral of thoughts and actions. Remember: this is about you, your journey. What works for someone else might be a real eye-opener and inspiration for you or it might lead you up a dead end. Be mindful of your own needs. This is not being selfish; when you are at your best then you bring out the best in everyone around you and the spiral goes upwards not down. So check out the fitness classes, diet groups, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and the running and cycling shops with expert advice. Think mindfulness, yoga, meditation and even counselling. Start looking for that financial planner, or the training course or employment agency to turn resolution into reality in the workplace. And most of all: think how good you will feel at midnight on Tuesday December 31, 2019 because you kept going, no matter what.
What have you resolved to do in 2019? Resolutions should not always be about weight, exercise and bad habits like smoking and drinking and too much sugar. Do not just think: ‘I must cut out’ make sure there are a few ‘I must do’ on the go throughout 2019.
How about: • Pay down debts or increase your savings pot? • Learn a new skill? • Take up a new hobby or devote more time to an existing one? • Go after, or improve your chances of, promotion at work? • New job? • Decide that this is the year you go-it-alone and be your boss, with your own business? • Learn more, as a way to improve employment opportunities or just for the sheer joy of learning?
Is 2019 the year of the new job? If the alarm clock goes off and you get a feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach then make this the year you do something about it Let’s face it – we have all had times in our lives when we settle for something less than we should, so shame on us. It could be that the thought of change is terrifying or just too much like hard work and hassle. The idea of a longer commute or the implications of childcare are daunting. Think again and don’t be put off - resolve to make this the year you re-evaluate your employment potential and value in the work place.

Living your best life with Parkinson’s Disease
E
very person living with Parkinson’s Disease knows the importance of exercise and the benefits that it brings, however, many do not know the best exercises for them as an individual. Over the last several years, there has been terrific research into the benefits of exercise for People with Parkinson’s. The great thing about the new research is that it shows that ‘Exercise is Medicine’ and the right style and types of exercise, given at the right time throughout the disease, can have a profound impact on the independence and confidence of the person living with the disease. ‘so what are the right exercises for me?’, I’m so glad you asked as this is a great question. I think you will understand that this is difficult question to answer in an article, because it depends on your symptoms and abilities. The main philosophy I teach people with PD is to ‘THINK BIG’. An analogy that was told to me by someone with PD is that ‘it’s like driving a car with the handbrake on’ so you really have to up the revs way more than you think to even get moving in the first place. Another question I get asked as a NeuroPhysiotherapist is ‘when is the right time to start exercising?’. The answer to that is very easy – it’s right now! The longer you leave it the harder it can be to get moving and make the positive changes you

should to make to live a better, healthier and more independent life with Parkinson’s. Remember, if you would like the right advice for you as an individual you should be assessed by a neurophysiotherapist who specialises in working with people living with Parkinson’s Disease.

hygge for hounds We are not the only ones who appreciate creature comforts during a cold spell
I
s your dog a fresh air fiend or a fireside friend? It is easy to tell. On a cold, snowy, frosty or wet day just reach for their lead and see what happens – they will be up bouncing with excitement or ignoring you and snoring away in the warmest spot they can find. Either way they need some extra winter care.
fresh-air fiends Wrap up on walks, a coast is a must for fine-coated dogs like whippets greyhounds or Staffies, or any older, convalescing, pregnant or nursing dog. See and be seen with collars and coats with reflective strips or LED lights. Just warn your neighbours so no one mistakes a black Labrador with an LED collar out on a moonless night for a visitor from outer space. Once home or back at the car, get them dry as quickly as possible and keep their bedding clean and dry with their bed away from drafts. Look after their pads and paws – salt, grit, residual de-icing chemicals on pavements or roads, spilled anti-freeze can get between pads and toes and so can compacted snow and ice. The dog equivalent of our cuticle, the quick, is far fleshier and can become vulnerable and bleeds heavily if cut. Sore, chapped skin can lead to inflammation and then infection so pay close attention to paws at all times, drying them off thoroughly and (Tiger Stores)
All you hill walkers and hikers beware: Dogs can suffer from frostbite if they become extremely cold. Frostbitten skin may appear grey or even black in colour, and it will be cold to the touch. Don’t rub any frozen tissue as it will cause additional tissue damage. Get them to the vet. They can also fall prey to hypothermia. Don’t leave your dog in the car in bitterly cold weather.

rinsing if necessary. Stay away from lakes and rivers. You do not know how strong any ice is. Worse it can be in varying thickness – in places weak enough to break and fall in, but too strong for a dog to break to get back to the bank and out safely. Keep them on leads or change usual routes away from water.
Fireside friends If your dog hates the weather and only goes out for the necessary reason, then make sure it exercises and doesn’t get bored by giving them lots of toys to play with. Dogs burn calories too! Adjust food accordingly. If they have been out all day running around while you sledge or cross country ski they will need more. Sitting on a cushion by the fire all day sleeping means smaller portions. We have all owned one! The crazy dog that will keep getting closer and closer to the fire until suddenly you can smell their coat start to singe, so remember the fire guard and while you are at it remember that pets and candles do not mix, so keep candles out of the way of boisterous dogs and above tail-height. Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2019
H
ave you ever wondered who, or what determines the colours of our clothes, accessories, cars, home furnishings and cosmetics? If so, wonder no more - The Pantone Colour Institute leads the way, with their colour experts travelling the world (dream job alert) looking for influences that will determine Pantone’s colour palette each year. Multiple industries then consult these colour references before putting them into practice. Originating in 1963, the Pantone Colour Matching System was created as a way to expertly match and classify colours. Pantone gave every colour and tone a unique reference number and presented them in swivel swatch cards for ease of use. This allowed for a perfect, consistent colour match which made, (and continues to make) life a lot easier for everyone involved in the Fashion, Textile, Paint, Plastic and Design industries. For the last 20 years Pantone has chosen their ‘Colour of the Year’ from their yearly colour palette, and for 2019 - it’s Living Coral, reference number: 16-1546 - a peachy shade of orange with a golden undertone. It’s bright and fresh and surprisingly versatile - a colour which aims to lift and energise. In Pantone’s own statement they describe Living Coral as a ‘colour of carefree happiness that symbolises our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits’ - Sounds positively peachy! Pantone are usually spot on with their colour of the

year choice however, perhaps unsurprisingly, there’s been a few exceptions, with 2017’s ‘Greenery’ being one of them - it was hailed as being ‘refreshing and revitalising, symbolic of new beginnings,’ but in reality it was a challenging colour that was hard to translate successfully across all industries. In contrast, ‘Marsala’ 2015’s colour of the year, had no such issues, this was a huge hit with the rich, dramatic burgundy shade being fully embraced, especially by the fashion and beauty industries. You will probably remember the bold, berry lips and daring dark nail colours from that time. Living Coral looks set to be another big hit, its universally flattering shade is perfect for clothes and cosmetics alike. Indeed, Butter London, Pantone’s official partner in beauty have already released a range of beauty products including a lip gloss, blusher and nail polishes - all in Living Coral. Another area where Living Coral might flourish is in the Wedding industry - just imagine

this pretty colour as a flattering bridesmaid dress or, a flower girl’s dress in white with a sumptuous broad satin coral ribbon tied in a big bow around the waist. This years colour could even be embraced by a bride looking for something a little different, for example, a soft tulle underskirt in delicate shades of coral, a touch of the unexpected just peeping out from underneath her dress. To complete the look, beautiful coral peonies would be stunning in bouquets and floral arrangements. Hey there love birds, it’s St Valentine’s Day The Bishop of Terni’s life and links with courtly love have been celebrated across the ages, but did you know of his Glasgow connection? ‘For this was on St Valentine’s Day when every bird comes there to choose his mate’ For this was on seynt Valentynes day, Whan every foul cometh ther to chese his make, Of every kinde, that men thenke may; And that so huge a noyse gan they make, That erthe and see, and tree, and every lake So ful was, that unnethe was ther space For me to stonde, so ful was al the place. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Parlement of Foules Parliament of the Birds in 1382 for the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia; both were only 15-years-old. This theme idea stuck; whether he wrote this about exististing folklore or his work began the tradition is not known.
Saint Valentine’s love continues
S
t Valentine may have been demoted but his saints’ day continues regardless.
The saint who became a by-word for romance had his feast removed from the general church calendar in the late 1960s. With little confirmed about his life and the chance that there might be two or more Valentines whose stories merged over the centuries led to his demotion and removal of his liturgical feast. Pope Gelasius made him a saint back in 496AD. There is no doubting there was a Valentine; archaeologists found a catacomb in Rome dedicated to him and his feast still appears on the calendar of some local churches, particularly the Diocese of Terni, Narni and Amelia in the Umbria region where St Valentine is claimed as a former bishop The diocese says it has hard evidence that the martyred Bishop Valentine was known and venerated in the city about 65 miles north of Rome, as far back as the seventh century.

St Valentine’s in The Gorbals
Romantic penguins (Artisani)
Glasgow has its own unique role to play in the story of St Valentine.
H
ow can the romance of St Valentine travel from a Medieval basilica in the Umbrian countryside to a modern parish church in The Gorbals – and several other European cities besides. The Basilica di San Valentine in Terni has become a place of pilgrimage and hundreds of betrothed couples gather there before getting married, to promise to love each other at the Festa della Promessa, Celebration of the Promise, Today’s basilica in Italy dates back to the beginning of the16th century but part of the earlier medieval structure has been found inside. An urn containing the remains of St. Valentine is beneath the altar and its various chapels feature important frescoes and paintings. At the less romantic setting of Blessed John Duns Scotus Church on Ballater Street in the Gorbals there is a reliquary containing a bone from one of St Valentine’s arms.

The Medieval trade in relics meant that bones from saints were sent all over Europe; it is not uncommon for several churches to claim them. Saint Valentine reliquaries can be found at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome, a Carmelite Church in Dublin and others include Madrid, Vienna, Prague, and Birmingham. A French family donated the Glasgow relic to the Franciscans in Victorian times it came to its present home via the Church of St Francis, Glasgow. And just as in Terni, couples come to the church of Blessed John Duns Scotus to especially to propose.

Ready to Spring into action?
By Kieran Gallagher Cardwell Garden Centre
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.
T
o be honest, I am quite glad it is over and things can get back to normal. Normality at Cardwell Garden Centre is when we get the Christmas decorations packed away and gardening returns to the fore. Spring is our favourite time of the year at Cardwell, but it is not here just yet. It is toward the end of January as I write this and the weather has just began to turn cold again. Although the winter has been relatively mild this year (particularly compared to last year) there is a cold snap in the immediate forecast, with the potential for some snow thrown in. Outside my window I can see the tips of daffodils poking through the soil, encouraged by recent mild and wet weather. A sharp cold snap will set these and other early flowering bulbs back for a short time, although they should recover.
snowdrops in full flower near Largs, on the coast road. Again, these are the results of the mild weather. By the time you read this it will be February and there is plenty to do in your garden. Certain seeds can be propagated now in heated conditions only. Growing from seed is the most cost effective way to have a large number of bedding plants or vegetable plants. Of course, the downside to growing from seed is that you must put a considerable amount of time into nurturing the seedlings to a point where they can be potted on to be grown into young plants. Some equipment, like heated propagators or small greenhouses, is also preferable. The risk factor in growing from seed comes from the potential for disease or wildlife to wipe out your entire crop.
Earlier this week I noticed a large group of wild

oung plants and seedlings are available to buy and, although there is a cost attached, the success rate of these plants is likely to be very high, even for beginners. It is a great way to introduce yourself to gardening if you have never grown from seed and there is a large variety of plants and vegetables to choose from. Another easy introduction to gardening and growing your own vegetables are potatoes. Seed potatoes are ready to buy now and with some simple planning can provide crops to enjoy from June through to Christmas.
bag of compost). These are perfect for growing potatoes and lots of other plants. One benefit of using containers over planting in the ground is that the soil temperature in the pot will be higher, which converts to stronger and faster growth. You may read about “chitting” seed potatoes before planting. This is simply allowing the seed to start growing prior to planting it. Egg boxes are ideal for this, just sit the potato seeds in the box in a bright and frost free situation and allow the eyes of the potato to sprout. Then go ahead and plant them as normal without breaking the sprouts off. The best thing about growing your own potatoes, or any other vegetable, is the taste. You will be amazed how much flavour a home grown tomato or potato has versus supermarket purchases. It is also great fun for kids to see how food is grown.
Potatoes can be grown in large pots or even bags, as well as the ground. Personally, I recommend planting them in very large plastic pots. We have a pot at Cardwell called the Smithy – a large black pot with a diameter of around 50cm and a capacity of 66 litres (approximately a standard large

Finally, there is a bonus to a hard frost if you have beds and borders to dig over and that is that whenever the top layer of soil freezes the moisture expands and draws in air. Once the soil thaws it becomes very soft and is already aerated. Digging in well rotted manure or other nutrient rich medium becomes much less of a chore and will make a considerable difference to your plants or crops. As they say in a popular television program, “Winter is coming”. On the plus side, so is Spring.
