Come and play the BSC way Sport is for all children, of all abilities. The BSC door is open with a warm welcome to come along and join in the fun where skills learned on and off the pitch will last a life-time

T

he distinctive blue and yellow sports kits of BSC are a regular sight around the West End of Glasgow as everyone from primary one tinies though to school leavers enjoys and grows within their sporting life, starting at primary one through teenage years to adult teams. BSC extends an open invitation to join them.

dress-code and time keeping; there is an expectation and young BSC players more than fulfil this and thrive.

it has run hockey and athletics; where there is an interest from children and parents the club’s ethos is to give it a go.

The club’s parents believe that the children learn from these rules and accountability and that these qualities help the kids away from the sports field and stay with them in later life.

The club does not have premises of its own, playing mainly at Hyndland School and Scotstoun Sports Campus. As well as training and matches there are also a variety of summer sports camps for the children to join in.

The BSC sees children enjoy themselves and feel secure within this ethos and its guidelines.

Broomhill Sports Club began in 2004 as a parent-led club which, after mergers, has evolved into today’s BSC - a club open to all emphasising health, fitness and well-being. The club has been going long enough that children have become adults in work or higher education. The ethos of the club is sport for all, across all ages and abilities with respect which comes from rules of conduct for behaviour, respect for each other, teamwork,

West End Life Magazine

And as they grow and go through the school system their sporting life at BSC helps them as a relief and release from the stress of exams and the pressures young people face today from social media. The club caters for all ages and abilities from primary one through to adults teams with 26 football teams and eight netball teams playing in local amateur leagues. They also now have a semiprofessional football team playing in the Lowland League. Football is mixed up until primary three and then splits into boys and girls teams; netball is girls only. BSC is also in the market to try and develop other sports. In the past

BSC is about everyone playing sport for enjoyment of the games themselves and the many benefits they bring. The club emphasises that all abilities are catered for, encouraged and welcomed; there are also teams bringing on youngsters with potential for playing their sports at regional, national and professional levels. www.westendlife.biz | 15

Spring Recipe By Nick Nairn

6 Hour Shoulder of Lamb with Rosemary, Garlic, Anchovy & Capers

P

reheat the oven to 220°C/ Fan 200°C Pull the needles off 2 branches of the rosemary and peel the garlic cloves. If the cloves are particularly large, cut each half into quarters or chop up a bit. Unroll the meat skin-side down on a clean work surface exposing the boned-out meaty side. Cut out any large pieces of excess fat. Scatter as much rosemary over this as you like then throw the garlic on top. Next place the anchovies randomly over the rosemary and garlic, followed by a scattering of caper. Season with plenty of ground black pepper, but no salt as the anchovies and capers should both contain enough salt for the job. If you’ve decided not to use the anchovies and capers (shame!) then you WILL have to season with salt. Next, roll the meat up like a Swiss roll from the shorter side, and using fine cooking string/twine tie up fairly tightly, starting in the middle and working towards each end to give a nice tidy joint. Place the joint in a roasting tray, drizzle with olive oil, season well

and bung in the oven to sear for 15 minutes, then turn the temperature right down to 140°C/ Fan 120°C. Remove the tray from the oven and place the carrot, onion and celery around the meat and tuck in the remaining rosemary branch, then pour the wine over the top of the meat. Cover loosely with kitchen foil, but making sure the edges are sealed around the tin and return to the oven to slowroast for 5 - 6 hours, basting every 30 minutes or so, the re-sealing again. Basting frequently helps to keep the meat moist and encourages the build up of a good glaze on the outside. When finished cooking the lamb will be thoroughly cooked through, meltingly tender, and not pink at all. The garlic will be as soft as butter and the anchovy just melts into the meat, disappearing completely but acting as a seasoning with the capers. If you use a digital thermometer you can check the core temperature of the meat each time you baste it and when it

reads 90°C it is done. If not using this handy gadget, then stick to the cooking time given then remove the joint from the oven, transfer to a warm carving dish or board, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest in a warm place for 30-45 minutes before carving. Strain the pan juices into a jug and skim off any fat or oil that rises. Taste the juices and if you like a more concentrated jus or gravy, then pour into a pan and boil hard to reduce until it tastes right to you. Keep warm. Once the joint has rested, remove the string and carve into generous slices and serve with good old baked potatoes, roasties or mash or for a treat, a creamy gratin dauphinoise. This is one of those dishes that is perfect paired with a medley of olive oil-roasted Mediterranean vegetables – peppers, courgettes, aubergines and red onions. Failing that, a stir-fry of purple sprouting broccoli, garlic and chilli is one of my favourites.

Serves 6. Ingredients

• 1.8 kg boned shoulder of lamb • 2-3 large branches of rosemary, washed • 4 large garlic cloves, halved lengthways • 8 anchovy fillets (optional but make all the difference) • 8-12 small salted capers, rinsed well (optional) • Olive oil • 3 medium carrots, peeled and halved • 1 red onion, peeled and quartered • 3 celery sticks, washed • 180ml red wine • Freshly ground black pepper

CHANEL Karl Lagerfeld

Bonheur Chanel (Coco) who was born in France in 1883. She opened her first shop on Paris’s Rue Cambon and enjoyed huge success. During the Second World War Chanel had a relationship with a German Nazi officer and lots of people believe she was also a spy. Because of this, after the war, she had to leave France and live in exile, before eventually returning to Paris aged 70 to restart her business. Coco lived at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, where she died aged 87.

W

hen Karl Lagerfeld was asked to design for the ageing House of Chanel back in 1983, he was advised by many in the fashion industry ‘not to touch it, as it could never come back’. Thankfully, Karl Lagerfeld considered this a challenge and has said ‘when I took on Chanel, it was a sleeping beauty, but not a beautiful one - she snored!’ Karl Lagerfeld certainly ‘woke’ Chanel up and he remained there until his death, in February this year. Chanel was created by Gabrielle

A creative genius, Karl Lagerfeld was instantly recognizable with his signature white ponytail, sunglasses and gloves. He had an incredible work ethic, where working sixteen hour days was a pleasure, along with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He said: ‘I love what I do, but I am also interested in everything that I don’t love, I want to see and know everything.’ This amazing attitude, along with his incredible creative vision propelled Chanel into the fashion powerhouse it is today. When Karl Lagerfeld first took over at Chanel, 10 years after Coco’s death, he was ever respectful of

20 | West End Life – April/May 2019

the house’s legacy and to the staff still loyal to Chanel herself. When faced with inevitable resistance to his new direction, he would say: ‘Even if she never did it this way, it’s very Chanel, no?’ He went on to revolutionize the tired fashion house, making it modern and very desirable. He injected a much needed dose of youthfulness and glamour whilst always keeping Chanel’s iconic designs, including the classic tweed suit, the fabulous 2.55 bag and the stylish two tone shoes at the heart of each collection.

Chanel Fashion Shows with Karl Lagerfeld at the helm were incredibly extravagant affairs and the huge Grand Palais in Paris was transformed each season to accommodate these spectacular shows. Two of the most memorable shows were, a full size Chanel supermarket - the @westendlife

aisles fully stocked with Chanel branded household essentials and, a full-size Chanel Airport which was without a doubt the most glamorous (albeit unreal) airport ever!

Perhaps, the best was kept for last - For the S/S 2019 Show, the Grand Palais was transformed into an amazing beach setting with idyllic backdrops, handsome lifeguards, beach huts, soft white sand and rather unbelievably, given that this was indoors - actual lapping water! As the models walked across the sandy beach and splashed through the gentle waves, shoes casually held in one hand, Karl Lagerfeld, watching the proceedings from the boardwalk, took his final bow.

The Jordanhill factor keeps West End house prices high It’s not only location, location, location but also education, education education as Scotland’s top state school helps drive up house values in the West End.

T

he reputation of the top state school in Scotland helps add value to West End property prices and keep them strong, says a leading firm of surveyors. Jordanhill School topped the latest annual table of Scotland’s top 50 state schools, and this, according to Shepherd Chartered Surveyors, helps to drive up house values in the area. Alan Fleming, partner in the firm’s Byres Road office in the West End said: ‘The West End continues to be a popular attraction with house hunters, partly because of Jordanhill School, which enjoy an enviable reputation. Properties that fall within this school catchment area always perform well.’ And he added: ‘Closing dates remain common and the number of properties selling for in excess of the Home Report valuation is on the rise. Demand has remained steady and with a lack of properties coming to the market, this has helped maintain values.

Alan Fleming: ‘The West End continues to be popular’.

‘That perennial appeal of the West End as an attractive area to set up home will always insulate its housing market to the short-term vagaries of national economic challenges, such as the ongoing Brexit negotiations.’ Rector Dr Paul Thomson is on record as saying ‘School empowerment is at the forefront of the Scottish Government agenda for school improvement and the partnership between home and school is an important dimension of this. Engaging with parents and helping them to understand how they can best support their child is a core element of our work. ‘Any success we may have reflects our philosophy of supporting and challenging each young person based on their individual strengths and needs.’ Jordanhill is unique in Scottish education in that it is the only state school directly funded by the Scottish Government, rather its local authority, 22 | West End Lifethan – April/May 2019 Glasgow City Council. The school is non fee-paying.

The results show that at Jordanhill 83 per cent of pupils achieved five highers or more, way ahead of Dunblane High, Stirling, with 76 per cent in second place; Beardesden Academy was sixth with 70 per cent. The school’s motto, in Latin is

Ad summa nitor – Strive for the highest.

Freezing can affect any movement but it is most noticeable when walking, when, all of a sudden, your feet feel like they have been nailed to the floor and no matter what you do they won’t budge. Trying to ‘push through’ and force your feet to keep moving can often make you off balance and it is very common for people to fall when this happens.

‘What should I do when I freeze?’ There are several different tactics that can work for ‘un-freezing’ and what works best can vary depending from person to person. That said, I would like to share with you the most effective way I have found to get you ‘defrosted’ and walking again.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this article and I hope it has given you a bit more information about Parkinson’s Disease and how you can make small changes to help you take charge of your life. If you would like to find out more about how I work with people living with Parkinson’s please give me a call or send me an e-mail and we can have a chat.

Step 1 – STOP!

What can I do next?

The first thing you should do is STOP and do not try to ‘push through’ or ‘force’ your feet to move. You need to ‘hit the reset button’ on your walking, so stop trying to ‘fast-forward’ through the problem.

If you would like to arrange a free callback with me, please email me at fraser@simpsonphysio.co.uk

Step 2 – GET TALL! Next, I want you to give yourself a Great Big signal to stand as TALL as you possibly can.

or you can give me a call on 07988 015190. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Step 3 – STAMP! Pick a foot (right OR left) and tell it to do a Great Big Stamp on the ground underneath you. Now keep that TALL feeling and STAMPING going and get back on your way.

Where there’s a will... ...there is a family with one less thing to worry about.

I

magine the scene - you are dealing with the numbing grief that only a family bereavement can bring.

We all come to terms with grief in our own way and life moves on eventually. It just takes time but it all takes longer if the grieving process is entangled and delayed by the lack of a Will.

A Will is a legal document which allows you to express how you wish your estate to be distributed and who you would like to benefit from your assets, when you die.

No one wants to find themselves in this position and no one wants to put their family in this predicament either.

‘That is why the message from the team here at Scullion LAW is that everyone should forward plan and make a Will and Power of Attorney, regardless of age,’said head of marketing Diana McLeish. ‘This is especially so for all of us with children. We need to protect the ones we love.’ Dying without a Will (intestate), can make things more complicated for those left behind because the law decides who gets what. Often this is not in keeping with the wishes of the deceased and can cause unnecessary stress, delay and increased costs.

across Lanarkshire and Glasgow make a FREE Will in aid of Marie Curie; this is part of our continued commitment to the community and in recognition of the great work Marie Curie do for those living with a terminal illness. We have also heavily discounted the cost of creating a Power of Attorney to those creating a Will for we believe that everyone should forward plan and have both.’ Gordon Lennox, Associate Director added: ‘Once your Will is written we recommend a review every three to five years, especially if your personal circumstances have changed. If you get married, divorced, move in with a new partner, have children, grandchildren, receive inheritance, or if the executor, beneficiaries or Executors are the guardians named in your people you appoint in existing Will die, you should your Will to manage update your Will as soon as your estate, following possible. your wishes for the future. Don’t you just love the Spring?

I

am deeply in love with Spring and look forward to it more with each year that passes.

Winter is almost over for another year, as I write this, and, by comparison to last year, it has been quite mild. February even saw meteorologists record the highest temperatures on record at over 18C. That little taste of warm sunshine and ‘taps aff’ weather served as a reminder of what is just around the corner. Typically, it did not last and was quickly followed by high winds, lots of rain and some hail and sleet thrown in for good measure. This dramatic change in temperatures can cause confusion in our gardens. There are daffodils 100 metres away from mine that have been in full flower for a week, whilst my own are very much still green. Micro climates can exist over very small areas, most often caused by how much sunlight the area gets during these short days. Even within your own gardens there will be areas that are better suited to flowering plants or growing crops. This is usually the south facing areas, which receive the longest amount of sunlight, and these areas can be the focus of your planting. A little forward planning for Spring and Summer planting can result in much better looking beds and borders later on. Our customers at Cardwell will often make impulse purchases on plants based on what looks good, what is in flower or on special offer.

Kieran Gallagher of Cardwell Garden Centre talks us through his favourite time of the year

This is fine, of course, but on top of this I suggest considering what you want to achieve from your planting. Think about height, foliage and flower colours and the longevity or lifespan of the plant’s flowers. It sounds obvious, but stagger your plants by height with the tallest at the back, shortest to the front. Colours can be grouped to create a strong effect or used in contrast to highlight the variety of planting. Foliage is often overlooked as a method of adding colour, but using something other than green can be a simple way to break up planting arrangements. Another thing to bear in mind is how much you plant. Very shortly our gardens will start to be invaded by unwanted weeds and one way to slow the attack is by filling your beds and borders with plants. This lessens the weeds growth simply by virtue of the good plants not giving them space or nutrients. Adding mulch as a top dressing in borders is also beneficial. It also makes it easier to see when a rogue weed does make it through as it stands out so clearly. When some of your own plants inevitably look worse for wear it is again easier to see the weak plant and replace it. One final tip to consider when introducing a new plant into your garden is its growth rate. Some of the plants we enjoy in our gardens can, and will, grow to an enormous size, if allowed. Invasive plants,

such as bamboo and the humble herb mint, grow very fast and like nothing more than to take over a garden. These should always be planted in containers. Even if you are planting in a border, keep the plant in a pot and this will help restrict its spreading. Another type that can spread out of control is self-seeding plants. These are plants that produce seeds which are then either blown around by wind or carried by birds etc to another area where the seed begins to grow. Pampas Grass is one example. It is rare to see only one plant in a garden or even street! Fuchsias are another, although these are often a more welcome intruder. The humble Leylandii conifer, the source of neighbourly disputes up and down the country for decades, is the best example. Conifers are often used as hedging for the simple reason that they can be very fast growing, putting on 30cm plus most years. This means you have a thick hedge in a very short space of time, but if it is not properly maintained (ie trimmed regularly) they will grow upward and out and can easily get out of control. Knowing these details before you purchase your plant is crucial. There are no wrong questions to ask about gardening, we all start at the beginning. If the shop selling the plant cannot offer advice, go somewhere that can. If the person selling the plant does not know how to look after it, then who has been looking after it before you buy it? This is general advice and good practice, but ultimately it is your garden and you have to look at it. Choose the plants, colours and arrangement that make you happy and enjoy your garden.
