X-RAID TEAM For more than 10 years, now, Team X-raid has been a constant in the international crosscountry rallying world. With its racing cars – the BMW X5, the BMW X3 CC and the MINI ALL4 Racing – the Trebur based squad succeeded again and again in realising new ideas and innovations. The result: rally wins galore, six FIA World Cup titles and the successes in the 2012 and 2013 Dakar Rallies. The basis for this enormous success is the international team that designs, builds, enhances and prepares the cars in the team headquarters in Trebur. The team members come from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal and Spain. And the line-up of drivers who successfully represent the X-raid colours in cross-country rallies with the MINI ALL4 Racing or the BMW X3 CC is just as international. The history of Team X-raid began back in 2002. Founded by Sven Quandt, it was the first German team that challenged the then dominating Japanese manufacturers with a German car, in the cross-country sport. And Sven Quandt dared to break new ground right from the start by entering the BMW X5 with the then all new twin-turbo technology. Thanks to this move, Team X-raid was the first team to enter a competitive diesel vehicle, in the 2003 Dakar.
During this time, X-raid GmbH underwent some structural changes: after the 2009 Dakar, the two sons of Sven Quandt – Thomas and Tobias Quandt – joined the team. Since those days, Thomas Quandt has been responsible for marketing and sponsoring, Tobias Quandt for logistics and organization. The most successful chapter in the Team X-raid history, however, was only about to begin: in 2010, with the design of the MINI ALL4 Racing. The latest member of the X-raid family was not only fast and rugged but also made for more emotions than virtually any other racing car in the sport. The first win of the MINI ALL4 Racing was secured by Stéphane Peterhansel in the 2011 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and at the same time, Novitskiy successfully defended his FIA World Cup title, with Team X-raid’s new challenger. Following the first Dakar appearance – in 2011 – with just one MINI, Team X-raid really went for it in the following year, entered five MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles – and the rest is history. Stéphane Peterhansel gave Team X-raid the first overall win in the Dakar and Nani Roma completed the squad’s huge success by coming second, thus giving them a one-two. Particularly impressive: all the five MINI made it to the top 10. And in the 2013 Dakar, the Monster Energy X-raid Team and Stéphane Peterhansel once again proved to be invincible.
Frenchman Luc Alphand made it to eighth position in the overall rankings right away and in addition, he won the diesel ranking. He repeated this feat in 2004 and even made it to fourth position in the overall ranking, this time. And the success story was continued: In late 2004, Khalifa Al Mutaiwei gave the team its first major international title by winning the FIA Cross Country Baja World Cup, with the BMW X5. In 2005, Team X-raid switched to the BMW X3 CC that should secure numerous major successes for the Trebur based squad. Altogether, the X-raid drivers celebrated four World Cup titles, with the new car: in 2008, Nasser Al Attiyah won both the Cross-Country Rally World Cup and the Cross-Country Baja World Cup, in 2009, Guerlain Chicherit won the Cross-Country Rally World Cup and in the following year, this feat was repeated by Leonid Novitskiy! Meanwhile, Filipe Campos secured three Portuguese Off-Road Championship titles, with the BMW X3 CC.

2013 team review
The Monster Energy X-raid Team can look back on a truly successful year. In January, the French pairing Stéphane Peterhansel / Jean-Paul Cottret secured their second consecutive Dakar win, with their MINI ALL4 Racing. Over the course of the year, the Trebur based squad secured another five wins in rallies and bajas all over the world. And in the end, the Monster Energy X-raid Team driver Krzysztof Holowczyc also secured the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup driver’s title. The team title also was secured by the Trebur based team and Spain’s Nani Roma came third in the championship. In the Dakar in January, Peterhansel / Cottret had to give their very best to prevail against the buggies of Nasser Al-Attiyah and Carlos Sainz. But with 14 days contested and a total mileage of 8000 kilometres covered in Peru, Argentina and Chile, the French pairing and their MINI ALL4 Racing crossed the finish podium as Dakar winners. With its reliability, the Monster Energy X-raid Team had defeated the faster buggies. Third place was secured by the Russians Leonid Novitskiy und Konstantin Zhiltsov, fourth by Nani Roma and Michel Périn – and Orlando Terranova / Paulo Fiúza also secured fifth position for the Monster Energy X-raid Team. What a great team achievement! Holowczyc can look back on a great season, too. In the Dakar, he was forced into retirement due to a pelvic vertebra injury but following a short stay in hospital, he immediately began his rehabilitation and was back behind the wheel of his MINI ALL4 Racing as early as in March – to secure the very fine second place in the Baja Italy and consistently clinch top positions in the following World Cup rounds and win the World Cup title, in the end. Meanwhile, Roma also may be happy with what he achieved in 2013. After all, the Spaniard celebrated four wins: in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the Desafío Ruta 40 in Argentina, the Baja Aragon in Spain and the Baja Hungary. With these results, he secured third position in the FIA World Cup.

With eleven wins, Stéphane Peterhansel is the most successful driver in the history of the Dakar Rally. The Frenchman celebrated six of his wins on two wheels and five at the wheel of a car, two of the latter (2012 and 2013) with the MINI ALL4 Racing. He made his debut for the X-raid team in the 2009 Baja Spain – and in the 2011 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, he gave the team the first MINI ALL4 Racing win. One of the particular strengths of the Frenchman is his extraordinary discipline behind the wheel. He knows exactly when it’s time to push and when to opt for a conservative approach. Making the 48-year old lose his cool is extremely difficult. Peterhansel always wants to squeeze the maximum out of himself. In addition to his Dakar wins he also secured two Enduro World Championship titles. And as juvenile, he won the French Skateboard Championship.

Spaniard Nani Roma is one of the big names of the international off-road fraternity. He has numerous rally wins under his belt – and his second place in the 2012 Dakar Rally. Just as team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel, he switched to Team X-raid in 2009 and made his debut for the squad in the Baja Spain. In the 2011 Dakar he raced a Nissan to switch back to the Trebur based team for the 2011 season. Roma began his career on a motorbike and won the Dakar motorbike title in 2004 to switch to four wheels in the following year.

In addition to his motor-racing career, he also attends to his foundation ‘La Fundación Nani Roma’ that focuses on sports promotion and the rehabilitation of handicapped persons by dint of sports.

Orlando Terranova made history in the 2013 Dakar Rally by becoming the first South American ever to have won a Dakar special stage in the car category. And by finishing fifth in the overall rankings, he also celebrated the best Dakar result in his career to date. The Argentinean already contested the 2009 and 2011 Dakar Rallies for Team X-raid. In 2009 he was the first South American to win a FIA Cross Country Rally by prevailing in the Rally of Tunisia.

Krzysztof Holowczyc began his motor-racing career in rallying and quickly became one of the most successful Polish drivers. In 1997, he won the European Rally Championship title. In 2005 he contested his first Dakar Rally. Five years later he joined Team X-raid to finish fifth in the 2011 Dakar. Since then, the ambitious Pole won different rallies and several Dakar special stages. In his homeland, the Pole virtually can’t cross the road without being recognised. His compatriots know him not only as successful motor racer but also as politician. From December 2007 to July 2009, Holowczyc was a member of the European Parliament.

CARS
MINI all 4 racing The MINI ALL4 Racing represents a unique success story. The Monster Energy X-raid Team built the car in just 90 days; a few months later, in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, it celebrated its maiden win — and in 2012 and 2013, the MINI ALL4 Racing helped Stéphane Peterhansel win the legendary Dakar Rally! The decision to build the X-raid family’s latest member was made just three months prior to the 2011 Dakar. “We had been looking for an X3 CC successor for quite a while,” reveals X-raid Team Manager Sven Quandt. “And keeping the MINI charm alive represented our top priority. The fact that we still can use the standard windscreen demonstrates the closeness of our MINI ALL4 Racing to the production car.” But without the straightforward and close cooperation of all the suppliers, such as Heggemann Autosport, Faster Racing, Magna Steyr and BMW Motoren Steyr, the Trebur-based squad wouldn’t have been able to complete the project in just 90 days. Eight staff members worked around the clock to build the MINI ALL4 Racing in Trebur. On 06th December, they had completed their job, and the off-road racer left the workshop for its first rollout, with the first test following a few days later in France. “Considering the extremely stressful months we experienced during the construction phase, the tests were nearly relaxing,” recalls Quandt. “Thanks to the great collaboration with our partners in the run-up, we encountered no problems while testing.” In its first Dakar, in 2011, the MINI ALL4 Racing immediately captured the hearts of fans, both on site and at home in front of their TV sets. Unfortunately, an accident on the day of rest forced the vehicle into an early and unfortunate retirement. Nonetheless, its success story was just about to begin. In April, in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret secured the first win with the Monster Energy X-raid Team’s new off-road rallying challenger — and in 2012, the Frenchman gave his squad the first Dakar win, with four MINI ALL4 Racing making it to the top five! In 2013 Peterhansel repeated his success. Since the car’s first outing in December 2010, the MINI ALL4 Racing’s technology has been subjected to major changes — but its charm has been kept alive.

Establishing their position The competitors will wake up early to set off along the road in the region of Cordoba and start the race on some narrow tracks which will require the utmost vigilance. Each one will still be very fresh allowing them to tackle the stony sections or the blind jumps serenely. The competitors’ driving skills will be rewarded at the finish, where they will have already clocked up 800 kilometres. Although the gaps will not be significant at this stage of the race, it is nevertheless important to maintain their position in the part of the standings that they are aiming for!

The fastest special stage of the rally, at least for its first part, will also be the one where drivers will have to face the first dunes. And it won’t just be a brief encounter with sand: in the last 100 kilometres, the exploration of the grey dunes of Nihuil will be even more intensive than during previous visits. The sand is more firm there, but the experience will provide a great deal of insight about each of the competitors’ technical skills. In short it will be a veritable test.

The Aconcagua as a landmark
The competitors of the 2014 Dakar will experience their first taste of the mountains by passing through the Pre-Andes. The Aconcagua Volcano stands 6,962m high and will observe the progress of the vehicles, of which a part will rehearse their high mountain driving techniques. The motorcyclists will climb up 4,300 metres during their special stage, on a ridgeline where they will have the impression of towering over the whole of America! The descent will bring them back to the tough reality of the drivers of the Dakar, as they will only have finished the first part of this marathon stage. They will have to ensure the mechanics for their own vehicles at the isolated bivouac which has been set up for them.

Liaison: 211 km Special Stage: 657 km Total: 868 km Mountains and countryside The strategy of the motorcyclists will come into play: initially their navigational skills will be seriously tested at the beginning of the morning, and then they will be faced with the problem of worn tyres, as they have already been over-used the day before. As for the drivers of cars, they will have an even more demanding route to tackle in the countryside. The Dakar’s competitors haven’t faced a special stage this long since the historical one from Zouerat to Tichit in 2005! They will have to cross rivers, descend the canyons in a Wild West setting and beware of the other participants: as these terrains are often wide open, it will be entirely possible to overtake fellow competitors.stage. They will have to ensure the mechanics for their own vehicles at the isolated bivouac which has been set up for them.

CALAMA
A sleepless night in Tucuman! After two race days with completely separate routes, everyone will gather together to tackle the longest stage of the rally. They will need to be extremely resistant to overcome these two sections of the special stage which will primarily feature sand. All day long the competitors will make headway on off-piste sections: those who have poorly assessed the limits of their engine will constantly be on the verge of overheating and all the more so, as the region’s temperatures are generally very high. At the bivouac in Tucuman, the candidates for the podium will have been whittled down to a select few, as many of them will no longer be a part of this elite group. For many others, their timing and mechanical mishaps will only become apparent in the middle of the night.

A new trip to the mountains will take motorcyclists to the banks of the rivers. SOUTH AMERICA REST DAY : SATURDAY, 11 january 2014 SALTA UYUNI
Reaching the rest day represents a major intermediary goal on the Dakar. Some of the rally’s newcomers, who are conscious of how tough the challenge is, may even regard this as a tiny victory. So the drivers and teams will be welcomed with the honours of a halfway podium at the bivouac in Salta, where a first celebration has been organised for them. Thousands of spectators are expected to come and discover the Dakar Village, as they did in Tucuman last year, where they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the rally, take advantage of the great variety of entertainment and activities on offer and meet the race’s key figures. It will also allow the competitors to boost their motivation levels and recharge their batteries.

The all-inclusive loop This mega loop with a 500-km long special stage on the agenda will test the teams’ ability to adapt to changes of pace. Dune specialists will be in command over a distance of almost 150km. Thrills will be guaranteed at the very end of the day, on the last three kilometres of the descent to Iquique: there is more than a 30% difference in height from start to finish and it is almost not recommended to break. Even more skill will be required to tackle the sections of fesh-fesh in the second part of the stage. In addition to the distance, here the competitors will be put to the test by all the difficulties offered by the Atacama Desert‌ and will have to display all the qualities required for off-road races. After the mine tracks and the many rivers to cross, the competitors will have to distinguish themselves in the heart of the Dunes of Copiapo: the fastest motorcyclists are expected to spend seven hours behind the wheel. Needless to say that on this decisive day there will be no shortage of opportunities for competitors to make a winning comeback in the race. This will be the key stage of the 2014 edition.

The site chosen in El Salvador at high altitude towers over the usual location of the bivouac in Copiapo. This position will ensure that the Camanchaca, the morning mist which sometimes hinders the start of the stages, will be avoided. Sand will be featured on the route again, in particular with a big string of dunes to be overcome at the end of the special stage. And if there are dunes, this automatically means that vehicles will be blocked in the sand! Therefore, in the categories where competitors are neck and neck, the leaders may put themselves at risk.

logistics When the teams start their journey across the South American continent, in January 2014, the major part of their work already has been completed. The Dakar is far more than just a race, it’s a true logistic challenge. All the spare parts and tyres have to be planned and packed for the shipping in advance. Here, experience counts more than anything else. How many units of which components might be needed? What can be repaired on site? After all, the space in the service trucks is limited and the handling with the spare parts also is a question of operating efficiency. Additional supplies to South America are impossible and on site, the teams themselves are responsible for the transport of their equipment. The tyres including the wheels also have to be taken along from Germany – in the case of the X-raid Team we are talking about more than 600 units. The 11 MINI ALL4 Racing and the one BMW X3 CC the X-raid Team will enter for the 2014 Dakar will be accompanied by two race trucks, 14 service trucks, two semitrailer trucks and more than ten service cars. A truck is assigned to every racing car and this truck virtually contains a second car in spare parts. Each of the 12 trucks carries the same cargo and in every truck, every part is stowed at the same place. Serially numbered boxes are supposed to make finding a certain spare part quickly easier. Several lists help keeping track of the cargo. In addition to the spare-part list, there are a tool list and an expendable-item list or items such as duct tape or batteries, etc. To keep the use of spare parts in a reasonable range, the service trucks are equipped with several workshops. A composite department where carbon parts are repaired – a workshop for the electronics and a department for the shock absorbers and the drivetrain. Furthermore, there is a production department for welding works and the fabrication of mounts and parts that can’t be changed.
But the trucks do not only carry the spare parts. They also are equipped with generators that provide the energy (70kW continuous power) for the tools, the light and washing machines. For the latter (inter alia), the trucks carry water tanks with a volume of more than 1,000 litres. Also assembled are shelf boxes for the luggage of the team members and air conditioned sleeping berths. The kitchen truck is fully equipped so the drivers can be supplied with food and beverage as soon as they have arrived in the bivouac. The major part of the food for the 100-member staff, including Bavarian veal sausage and other German treats are brought along right from Germany. But it goes without saying that fresh food, however, such as meat, vegetables and fruit are purchased on site.
logistics Late in November, everything has to be packed and stowed as the vehicles of the X-raid Teams hit the road for the harbour in Le Havre, France. There, the material will be loaded on a cargo ship chartered by the ASO to then be shipped to Buenos Aires. On 01st January, the vehicles will be driven from the ship and brought to Rosario for the start of the Dakar. During the Dakar, eased border crossings and clearing formalities between Argentina, Bolivia and Chile are in effect for the Dakar competitors. While it usually can take up to several days until you are allowed to enter another country with so many cars and people, it takes just several minutes during the rally.

all about co-pilots The co-drivers are the unsung heroes of the Dakar Rally. After all, only they literally know the way! Other than in the standard rally sport, the crews don’t know the route in cross-country rallying. To find their way to the finish, they mustn’t use anything but the road book, the Tripmaster and a compass. The co-drivers of the Monster Energy X-raid Team — Jean-Paul Cottret, Michel Périn, Paulo Fiúza and Konstantin Zhiltsov — are among the most experienced navigators in the field. In the road book, arrows and symbols inform the co-driver of the route and the things the crew has to look out for — such as where to turn left or right, whether there are dangers, what kind of ground the driver will have to cope with, and whether and where there are speed limits. In addition, the navigator is provided with two different kilometre indications: the total kilometres from the starting point and a distance information between two points. The Tripmaster is a device informing the co-driver of the covered kilometres. The upper line shows the total mileage, and the lower indicates the distance between the different information points. By pressing a button, the co-driver can set this information to zero. Meanwhile, the displayed total mileage also can differ from that shown in the road book. This can be caused by different factors, such as overtaking manoeuvres or wheels spinning in the sand. But this information also can be adjusted by the navigator at any time. The sort of GPS systems that are typically used today in navigating day-to-day traffic are prohibited in the Dakar Rally. The GPS system in the racing cars is function-limited and mainly works as a compass. Apart from that, the system only starts to work within a certain distance (i.e., kilometre radius) of a waypoint, to guide the driver to the given coordinates. These waypoints must be passed by the drivers and are intended to prevent crews from using shortcuts. Should a driver miss one or several waypoints, he can receive time penalties and may even be disqualified.
The co-drivers get the road book for the coming day when entering the bivouac at the end of a day’s stage. While the drivers now have the chance to rest for a while, the navigators have to continue to work. They work on their road books and personalise them — often late into the night. The majority marks the information with different colours to be able to capture all the significant information at a glance, later. They are then able to provide their drivers – with whom they are connected via a intercom — with only the most important information.
regulations and procedures The most important regulations of/ for the 2014 Dakar Rally.
and
procedures
Allowed vehicles
entered by many teams for so-called ”fast assistance.” In the 2014 Dakar, the Monster Energy X-raid Team entered two of these race trucks. A racing car may be towed to the finish by another competitor, but should be towed right to the bivouac.
The class T1 comprises the prototypes and, so, the MINIs ALL4 racing and the BMWs X3 CC run by team X-raid, too. The buggies also race in class T1.
The competitors may have satellite phones on board for use in an emergency, but using these phones while driving is prohibited. A radio connection and/or data transfer between the competitors and their teams is prohibited.
The close-to-production cars start in class T2. Here, only certain components of the vehicles may be enhanced or changed and adapted to the forces with which they have to cope.
Starting order
Group OP ‘Open’ comprises — inter alia — vehicles that have been designed and built according to the U.S.-American score regulations. Trucks race in the class T4. Finally, the field features competitors who contest the Dakar in the ”Alternative Energies” category.
Help in the case of technical problems. The mechanics of a team may work on the cars only in the bivouac and on the liaison when it is identical for race vehicles and service vehicles. Lending a hand during the stage is strictly prohibited for mechanics. Only competitors may help one another. More often than not, driver and navigator are able to solve minor problems without help. In the case of major damages, they signal back to the race trucks that are
Only on day one will the competitors start into the stage according to their numbers. Beginning on day two, the results of the previous stage will determine the starting order. This means that the winner of the previous stage will be the first to go out on the following day. Should a competitor who holds a top-15 position in the car category encounter a problem (and therefore fall further back in the starting order), he or she is allowed three times to demand to be moved to a better starting position. Doing so permits him or her to avoid having to overtake numerous slower competitors.
Navigat i on The ASO regulations for the navigation are strict. The only GPS functions competitors may use are the road book, the trip master and the compass. Apart from these functions, all other GPS use is prohibited, except in case of emergency (and for which use a crew must expect a multi-hour time penalty). Should a crew use the GPS four times, the crew will be disqualified. During a special stage, the competitors have to pass several waypoints determined by the organisers. Should they miss a waypoint, they will face time penalties or even disqualification. The waypoints ensure that competitors follow the intended route instead of using shortcuts.
regulations and procedures The way poi nts at a glance WPV: This is an information point that indicates the time control at the start and finish at the bivouac.
WPS-safety waypoint: This waypoint alerts the driver to a potential danger along the route. As soon as the competitors enter the three-kilometre radius around this point, they are guided by the GPS to the point. They must pass within a 90-metre radius of the point to achieve validation. WPM-hidden waypoint: When competitors enter the 800-metre radius around the WPM, the GPS starts to work and guides the competitors to the checkpoint. The competitors have to pass the waypoint within a 200-metre radius to achieve validation. WPE-eclipse waypoint: The GPS, with all its capabilities displayed on screen, directs the competitor toward this waypoint once the previous waypoint has been validated. Competitors must pass within a 200-metre radius to achieve validation. Competitors are supposed to find their way solely through use of the road book. Nonetheless, there are areas where the organisers mark the right path with warning tape. These areas are sensitive zones, such as agricultural areas and highly populated or dangerous sectors. These are indicated in the road book with a special mark. Where these sensitive zones are concerned, the ASO punishes every offense with particularly draconian penalties, which can even lead to disqualification in cases of recidivism.
Speed controls even in the Dakar
Usually, in the special stages, drivers of racing cars can freely choose their speeds. However, the organisers have introduced ”speed zones“ where competitors must not drive faster than 30, 50 or 90kph. These zones apply in particular to those areas where the organisers expect big crowd to gather, or where the race course crosses villages. If not in a special stage, competitors have to abide by local speed limits. Meanwhile, service cars must always comply with speed limits. For cars, the speed limit amounts to 110kph, and for trucks, to 90kph. Whenever these vehicles enter a bivouac, their compliance with these limits will be checked through use of the ‘‘Tripy” (an electronic road book). If several violations of the limit are recorded, even the fastest racing car of the respective team can receive time penalties.
important terms around the dakar rally Bivouac: At the end of every stage, this is the camp where all the teams and competitors erect their service sports. In addition to the medical centre and the media centre, the bivouac also features a big catering camp, representing the meeting place for all the members of the Dakar baggage.
Iri track:
Briefing: During the rally, the organisation will hold a driver briefing on every evening. In this briefing, special incidents of the day will be recounted, and hints for the coming stage will be provided.
N eu tralisation: A neutralisation phase can be embedded in a special stage.
checkpoint-CP:
At a checkpoint, competitors must collect a stamp on their time cards to prove that they passed the checkpoint. Should a competitor miss a checkpoint (or fail to collect the stamp), he receives a time penalty.
GPS: In the Dakar, the GPS is used as control system. In the special stages, the competitors may navigate solely through use of the road book. The GPS only confirms arrival at and passing of the checkpoints. Fast assistance: As only competitors are allowed to help one another, in the Dakar, many teams enter a ”Fast Assistance.” This Fast Assistance is usually a race truck that contests the event in the truck category and provides the competitor extensive support in the case of an accident or a technical problem. The truck has spare parts and tools on board. Stage: A stage comprises liaisons that take the competitors from the bivouac to the start and/or from the finish to the bivouac — and the special stage.
This satellite-supported system provides position control. With this system, the PC Course can control the position and speed of every competitor. In case of an emergency, the competitors can contact the PC Course using an integrated satellite phone.
In this area, no time is added to the competitors’ tally.
PC Course:
This race control is responsible for sports and safety-relevant aspects and for appeals.
rest day: On this day, at rally half-time, no stage is contested, and the competitors and vehicles stay in the bivouac. The teams use this day to perform extensive maintenance work on their cars. Road book: The competitors are provided with the road book when entering the bivouac at the end of a stage. It provides all important navigation information: distances, dangerous passages and special hints. The information is displayed using arrows and symbols. Scrutineering:
Racing and service cars are checked to ensure that they meet all technical regulations.
important terms around the dakar rally Sentinel:
Speci al stage:
Service route: All service cars — which means all cars apart from the competitors’ and press cars — will drive from bivouac to bivouac on this route, which is stipulated by the organisation.
Way point-WP:
This acoustic and optical warning system is used to alert competitors that a faster vehicle is approaching from behind, which should make overtaking easier and safer.
Speed zone: In a speed zone, competitors must abide by a specified speed limit (30, 50 or 90kph). These zones were introduced to protect potential spectators and/or the specific terrain being driven through. Time card:
Start and finish times are recorded on this document. In addition, the co-drivers collect the necessary stamps on this document at the checkpoints (CPs).
Tri pmaster: This electronic measuring system is intended to support the codriver. It measures the total distance and individual stage distances (for instance, between two points in the road book), and can be adjusted by the co-driver. Liaison-Road Section: The liaison takes the competitors to the start, and from the finish to the bivouac. It must be completed by the drivers in a specified time.
Competitors must contest this part of the stage as a race against time. Time, from start to the finish of the special stage, is used in evaluating competitors’ position in the overall standings. These points along the route are determined by the organisation and must be passed by competitors. There are four different types of waypoints: WPV, WPM (hidden way point), WPE (eclipse way point), and WPS (safety way point).
history of the dakar rally Back in 1979, 182 teams started a rally that today remains one of the biggest adventures you can experience on planet earth — the Dakar Rally. The founder of the legendary event was Frenchman Thierry Sabine, who himself had gotten lost in the desert during a rally some years earlier and had required several days to find his way back to civilisation. Sabine chose France’s capital, Paris, as the starting point for his rally, and from there, the route took competitors to Dakar, the capital of Senegal. The name “Paris - Dakar” was born and has survived until today — although only 17 of the 35 Dakar rallies contested to date have actually taken the competitors from Paris to Dakar.
In 2008, the Paris - Dakar hit rock bottom due to the political situation in Africa that nearly spelled the end of the desert rally. Just a day prior to the Dakar Rally’s scheduled start in Portugal’s capital of Lisbon, the ASO had to cancel the event due to terror threats by Al Qaida against the rally and its competitors. Providing reliable protection against attacks would have been impossible, and so, teams and drivers had to travel back home empty-handed. Due to the politically insecure situation, the organisers didn’t dare to return to the African continent and instead sought a new venue. And at the end of the day, ASO thought they’d found an ideal candidate, on the South American continent, in the countries of Argentina and Chile.
In the years following 1979, enthusiasm for desert adventure increased consistently, and the first manufacturers began to show interest in the event. As early as 1986, the Dakar field began to feature prototypes. In that year, however, the racing details proved not to be the most important aspect of the rally, as Thierry Sabine died in a helicopter crash while searching for a lost bike rider.
Not knowing what to expect from this new venue, the teams and drivers travelled to Buenos Aires — the start and finish point of the 2009 Dakar Rally — and were pleasantly surprised. The population welcomed the Dakar with enormous enthusiasm, and the start was witnessed live by a million spectators along the track.
Nine years after the maiden Dakar Rally, a competitor debuted who would become the most successful Dakar driver of all times: Stéphane Peterhansel. Just three years later, the Frenchman secured his first win on a Yamaha! He added another five triumphs on the motorbike and five wins in the car category, in the following years. But in 2001, Peterhansel was upstaged by a German woman. At the wheel of a Mitsubishi, Jutta Kleinschmidt won the Dakar as the first and still only woman in the history of the sport — along with her German co-driver, Andreas Schulz.
In the two years that followed, the Argentinean capital remained the start and finish point of the rally, but in 2012, the route took the competitors from the Argentinean seaside resort Mar del Plata to Peru’s capital, Lima. There, the 2013 Dakar was started and took the field via Argentina to Chile’s capital, Santiago. In 2014, Bolivia will be added to Argentina and Chile as a host country — although only the motorbike riders will have the pleasure of racing in this South American country.
