Visiting Xavier Open House

The best way for a family to get a feel for life at Xavier is to visit us during our Open House on October 21. Come ready with questions. Your own student tour guide will show you the vast opportunities available to a Xavier student. You will be introduced to the state-of-the-art classroom technology provided for our students in the newly opened Fernandez-Duminuco Hall. In addition, you’ll be able to speak with teachers from all of our departments about course offerings, pose questions to our guidance counselors, talk with our administrators, and meet with moderators of our clubs and coaches of our athletic teams. Advance registration strongly suggested. Register on our Inquiry Form at www.xavierhs.org/inquire.

Knight-for-a-Day Program

Interested eighth grade students are encouraged to shadow a Xavier student through our Knight-for-a-Day program. Each Knight-for-a-Day will accompany a current freshman to experience the typical day and attend classes, meet teachers and students, and have lunch in Hurtado Hall. Campus visits can be scheduled online for any regular school day between October 24 and December 15, 2017. Register for the Knight-for-a-Day Program on our Inquiry Form at www.xavierhs.org/inquire.

School Tours

We offer tours to families of eighth graders in the fall. We offer families of fifth to seventh graders as well as any student seeking to transfer to Xavier tours in the spring. To schedule a tour, please fill out our Inquiry Form at www.xavierhs.org/inquire.

Applying to Xavier Online Application • Each applicant must fill out the online application at www.xavierhs.org/apply. Once the application is submitted, you will gain access to your personal online admissions portal with a customized checklist of other items you must submit. Standardized Testing Options • Most applicants take the TACHS exam. In the event that a student does not take the TACHS, we will accept a similar standardized test (COOP, CHSEE, ISEE, SSAT). We consider all standardized test options equally. Please consult the Admissions website for other testing options. Transcripts • If you attend a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of New York or the Diocese of Brooklyn and take the TACHS, we will receive your transcripts along with your TACHS scores. If you do not attend a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of New York or the Diocese of Brooklyn, you must submit a Request for Academic

Records form (found on your online portal) to your school’s principal or guidance/high school placement counselor. In such cases, we must receive the transcript by December 1. Scholarship Exam • Students who wish to earn a merit-based scholarship must take the HSPT. For further information, please visit the Scholarship Exam page on the Admissions website. You must select where you will be taking the exam through your online admissions portal. Teacher Recommendations • While optional, each student may select up to two persons to write an online recommendation. The first recommendation should come from the teacher of a core subject area in seventh grade. The other recommendation, for instance, may come from a principal, school counselor, coach, pastor, or another teacher. You must request the recommendations through your online admissions portal.

Transfer Information

Non-Discrimination Policy

Transfer applications are considered on a rolling basis, typically starting in March and running throughout July. We do not accept mid-year and senior transfers. A typical transfer student will have, at minimum, a 90 average with no grade lower than a “B” and a demonstrated commitment to developing his talents for the good of the Xavier community. In certain cases, we require transfer students to take the HSPT.

Xavier’s commitment to the human dignity and rights of each of its students is of paramount importance in formulating the educational policies that govern its community. It is with these rights in mind that Xavier High School admits students of any race, religion, color, or national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, scholarships, and activities accorded or made available to students at the school. Xavier adheres to this commitment throughout the student’s tenure at Xavier by providing and administering educational policies and cocurricular school-sponsored programs that do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, or national or ethnic origin.

Tuition

Merit Scholarships

Tuition for the 2017-18 school year is $18,500. The Board of Trustees typically sets the following year’s tuition in March. Tuition may be paid in one, two, four, or 10 installments. If you select the single payment, the full tuition is due in July. Semester, quarterly, and 10-month plans are administered through FACTS, which adds a nominal administrative fee for utilizing the service. Tuition payments through FACTS begin for newly registered students in June.

Xavier offers three levels of merit scholarships, granted over four years, provided that the student maintains an 85 cumulative average. We award merit-based aid to a student who scores in the top 10 percent on the scholarship exam and has earned straight As in middle school. Each scholarship earner is automatically placed into our Ignatian Scholars Program.

Tuition Assistance Through the generous donations of alumni and friends, Xavier has committed itself to make a Jesuit education a reality for families who express financial need. For the past several years, Xavier has been able to award need-based grants ranging from $2,000 to $16,000 to approximately 35% of students. Families must reapply for financial aid annually. Need-based aid may fluctuate from year to year based on a family’s financial circumstances. Please consult www.xavierhs.org/financialaid for further information about how to apply for need-based assistance. December 1 is a strict deadline for applications for need-based assistance.
