03 / of meandering a thesis
The creation of a library and archive located in the crosshairs of the Jerominos Monastary and the Planetário Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Portugal, this thesis seeks to explore the linkages between the scientific and the sacred, and the creation of a mediatory path through space that allows one to “meander” both physically and thoughtfully. While the sacred is most often associated with religious iconography and Western Christianity, this thesis seeks to explore the sacred in more secular and human terms, that perhaps the “sacred” resides in the human lens, through actions of silence, contemplation, and reverence (and not necessarily of the religious kind). The sacred can be found through a progression, a preparation, a ritualization that elevates the profane to a higher place, and the “meander” is a means of allowing this progressing to occur.
04 / CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER CONSTRUCTION
In a three-person team, cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels were fabricated in order to further research new woodtechnologies and their impact on future sustainable application. CLT technologies are a relatively new technology, developed since the 1990s in Europe but with limited application within the United States. Because of its usage of cross-laminated wood, it is considered a green building mate- rial with structural ability similar to both steel and concrete. Additionally, because CLTs must be produced before usage, they offer customization and pre-fabrication options. In order to further examine the usage of CLT technologies and their viable usage within the United States, this team fabricated their own CLT panels from typical available lumber in order to create a section of a pavilion designed for student use as an inhabitable space.
