The Smart cup. A cup that keeps an eye on your hydration during the day. Does it really work, or is it a marketing trick first and foremost? Tested by Sabrina for one week, here is her report. It requires some studying before you can get it to function properly. Luckily, the cup comes with a detailed 6-page manual to help you get started. First, the battery protection has to be removed. Then you should install the (free) app ‘iCUP’ on your phone. Both Apple and Android are possible. iOS 7.1 or higher, Android 4.3 or higher. In the manual there is a practical QR code to help you find the app easily by the way. For the communication to work between cup and phone, Bluetooth 4.0 or higher is required.
“When you open the app, you can adjust the settings for a personalised drinking plan.” Enter your name, age, weight, length, daily scheduled consumption and set the reminder buzzer on/off. If the buzzer is activated, it will remind you with a beep after 30 minutes if you have drank less than 100ml, after 1 hour if you drank between 100 and 200ml. There is a repeat beep if you ignore the reminder. Of course all the reminders and beeps will stop once you reached your goal. Now I know how it works I can put it to the test! I named my Smartcup ‘Poseidon’ which seemed appropriate, and entered all my personal data in the app. So when I got to the office I poured myself a first cup ... of coffee.
Once properly awake I calibrated my cup (empty!) and then filled it with water. A red LED lit up for a couple of seconds once I put it down. Quite logical, since I hadn’t take a sip! Running late for a meeting that morning I grabbed my paperwork and my cup and took my seat in the meeting room. Of course it started to beep in the middle of the meeting, and with a blush I quickly took a sip. It shut up to my relief, but decided to show a red LED. Half a dozen inquisitive looks in the room forced me to explain what this was all about. Of course, the buzzing repeated a couple of times. Later that day, after I’d gotten used to picking up the cup more regularly, all of a sudden the LED turned green! So I finally did reach the goal I set earlier on. My goal I believe was 750ml. When I got home I checked the app on my phone and proudly showed the day’s history to my boyfriend. The overview is quite easy to read and in some way addictive as I found out over the next couple of days. To conclude I’d say this smartcup functions pretty well, once you have figured it out. It’s a fun way to remind you to stay hydrated during the day. Poseidon rules!

THE BIG BOTTLE TEST By LISA Labrey
When I was asked to test some sports
bottles I did not expect to test 6 different ones! But as I drink a lot of water because I know it is good for me and I go to the gym twice a week, I thought it would be an easy task. My regular bottle is a supermarket bottled brand that doesn’t last very long, so I buy a new bottle every two weeks or so. For this comparison I used every test bottle for about a week and I filled it with tap water. Didn’t notice any difference. Taste-wise that is! In terms of practical use, there was a big difference, as you can read in my review.

Of course, the first thing I noticed was the special feel of the material. When I figured out that it wasn’t damaged, but that I could put the container part in the freezer I tried it right away! After 3 hours in the freezer I poured my sports drinks in the container. After the workout and a refreshing shower some three hours later, the remaining drink was still cool!
A basic 500ml model that has a good feature: a straw! When I was doing my spinning training in the gym this came in handy. I did not have to tilt the bottle to be able to drink. As this is a metal bottle, obviously it cannot be squeezed. The drinking spout folds to securely close the bottle. Because the spout is not protected in any way, I would rather choose this bottle for indoor sports.

Original! That is what struck me when I saw this one! Obviously a running bottle, the opening also functions as a grip when drinking. Despite the opening, it still holds 550ml, which is pretty good. The coloured element has a comfortable soft touch to it. My only worry was that the lid cannot be locked. Otherwise, this is a practical bottle and a true conversation piece in the gym, as I found out!

This one I would definitely take with me on a hike! It’s big (750ml), has a hook to attach to my backpack and the lid is protected. The feel of the plastic is strong, with an anti-slip grip. I really like this bottle for its practicality. My personal favourite, because I can also take it to work, to the gym and the sunny beach in a couple of weeks, hopefully!
I absolutely adore the off-pink colour. I’m a girl, after all… 600ml is quite a large amount. It is rather a big bottle, and drinking with one hand is not all that easy when riding a bike, especially if your hands are quite petite, like mine. Otherwise, the drinking spout is very handy. And the steel material is ideal for rougher outdoor use.
This one confused me at first. How to use this?! After I read the manual I learned that this one is NOT for drinking, but for holding your cooler towel (which is included). So I held it under water, wringed it out and put it in the bottle. After a cardio workout in the gym the other day I found the cooling effect soothing in my neck. The good thing is the damp towel can be stored in the bottle without other gear getting wet. Just a shame that the bottle cannot be used for drinking from.

CASE STUDY: At TubeWise we produce industrial piping. The working conditions for our 173 office and factory staff are both harsh and stressful. In cooperation with the health inspection we came up with a program to point out the importance of health responsibility. Our supplier of office and promotional supplies came up with a range of products that fit the communication around this theme. Mark DeGrate, CEO TubeWise

We picked a waterbottle and an activity tracker. Each employee chose a product that they would use at work. Of course we did build a complete communication scheme around it. Of course, the items were printed with our company logo. In addition, our supplier suggested to put a sleeve around the product. For only a small surcharge, the packaging had our company image. Plus, he said: “you could explain your project in a couple of lines”. Great suggestion. Reactions were very positive and it all worked out fine. After 7 months, absenteeism fell with 17% and productivity is up 3%. Staff happy, management happy. With our supplier currently, we are already working on our Christmas campaign for our customers, once again around the theme of health.
