Empowering Engagement through Learning
The learning nexus will provide diverse spaces for community education facing all age groups, with shared areas like study halls and computer labs, alongside specialised zones for children, seniors, and a distinct online study hub for working adults.
The learning environments are categorized into static, structured areas and d ynamic, interactive spaces. These interwoven elements create a balanced educational ecosystem for all ages, offering flexibility and a blend of quiet and collaborative opportunities throughout the precinct.

Seamlessly Connecting the Precinct and Nature
The interior learning spaces prioritise a biophilic environment, integrating nature for engagement. Aside from greenery, two natural patterns enhance the ambiance. Undulating timber veneer aids wayfinding, guiding learners through the space. Stiff patterns at interfaces offer diverse functionalities - standing, solo or collaborative studying- fostering an immersive learning atmosphere. Across this area, learners directly engage with nature via lightwells, intertwining static and dynamic programs. These spaces feature bench seating and learning stations, merging with the building's functions. These elements converge, crafting a biophilic learning haven, seamlessly connecting inhabitants with the outside world.

The Existing Immigration Museum
Comp leted in 1876, the Immigration Museum in Me lb ourne showcases the diverse stories and imp acts of migrants to Austra li a through exhibits and artefacts.
An examination of the current Immigration Museum showed that its exhibit ion method, which primarily consists of reading and viewing artefacts, is unidirectional and lacks int eractivity. This sty le can seem too simp li stic, simi lar to an IELTS test, especia ll y for immigrants. The suggestion is to adopt a more interactive, multi-directional approach to exhibitions, enhancing engagement and facilitating better communication and learning among immi grants and other visitors.
The History of Museum
The origins of museums trace back to ancient Egypt. Throughout their evolution, particularly in the Renaissance era, museums were viewed as theatres for learners. This perspective has inspired further exp loration of museums ' potential within the arts sector.
Immigration Museum and Music
The Austra li an government has launched a national cultura l policy named ''Revive" at the beginning of 2023, aimed at supporting and promoting the arts within society. Music thus was se lected from an array of artistic activiti es, noting it s universal presence in ce lebrations, yet with unique tonal and rhythmic differences among cultures. T11is highlights music's globa l reach and unique cultura l identity. Different cultures have their own musical traditions, and we can communicate the cultures through music.

Situated directly opposite the Yarra River, the site is characterised by a natural riverbank, resulting in a significant elevation difference of nearly 6 metres. Pedestrians must ascend 25 steps from the north to reach the museum. Consequently, the existing landscape has undergone modification and form a new museum entrance facing the city.
Additional programmatic spaces, such as theatre and office, have been incorporated beneath the restructured exterior landscape, elevating the north entrance to align with street level. This alteration provides access to the building from all four sides, thereby enhancing its interaction and connectivity with the broader urban context.

Visual I mmersion E xpenence
To enhance a multi-sensory experience, the museum's design integrates educational music spaces beyond the main hall, instantly immersing visitors in a multi-cultural musical atmosphere visually and audibly. Further into the building, the Immigration Museum emphasises exhibition methods that foster multi-sensory interactions. It features sound booths in the gallery, allowing visitors to engage with diverse cultural music, often played live in the museum 's practice studios. This approach deepens the visitor 's experience, connecting them more intimately with various cultural expressions through music.

Celebrating the Multi-culture Contribution
To honour the diverse cultures of Melbourne through music, the city's overseas-born residents are grouped by continent, together with their traditional instruments, which are often hand-crafted or intricately designed, and can reflect their nations' identities - polished finishes denote established countries, while raw materials symbolize newer communities. This contrast informs the museum 's new timber expansion.
The building's timber facade features vernacular horizontal awnings, ingeniously serving as both shading and acoustic enhancements for studios, further acknow ledging the city's multicultural fabric.

A Contemporary Library
A contemporaty library concerns more on sociability nowadays. It gradually transitions from Collection-Centred to User-Centred. Seattle Central Library by OMA is considered as the pioneer of this idea, in which Rem Koolhaas and his team applied a ' Function Re-allocation' design technique, making rooms for social programs. After 15 years, we can do more on this.
A Centralised Library
A contemporaty library must be centralised. People should be guided by specific circulation paths to the specific function areas, for efficiency and acoustic reasons. It shouldn ' t be 'one size fits all'. We don't only need 'F unction Re-allocation', but also 'Function Transition'.
A Contemplative Library
A contemporary library on this site must be contemp l ative as well. The site is surrounded by restaurants. The restaurants already share a part of the sociability function of the contemporaty library, and this fickle community needs a place for contemplation. Library as 'space for contemplation' was the initial idea since the libraty was given birth during medieval.

To be Centralised
A contemporary library is gradually focusing more on sociability, rather than merely book collection nowadays, following the idea of abandoning Collection-Centred and choosing User-Centred. A contemporary library should be centralised for efficiency and acoustic reasons. The basic solution is to have a 'circulation core' at the centre.
To be Contemplative
Inspired by The Hajj in Mecca as contemplative architecture and prayer 's activity of walking around it, and also Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim Museum, a spiral ramp space will be designed inside the building volume, manipulated from purely ramp to continuous stairs in order to attach some chill programs such as galle1y, resting, cafe, etc.
The Circulation
Circulation is the key to this project. The setback from the adjacent buildings and the cul-de-sac on the east of the site have limited the contact with outside. The entrance of the library would be located at the intersection of street networks. Two distinct circulation systems are designed for the purpose of contemplation and the function of a library: one is for leisure and spiral, the other is direct and urgent. The two circulation systems get separated straightly on the ground floor, in order to quickly respond to various needs of the visitors.
Defining Stepped Spaces
A spiral ramp space as a 'circulation core' is designed inside the building for contemplation purpose, manipulated from purely ramp to continuous stepped spaces. Therefore, another key aspect of this project is to have as various programs as possible in these spaces. In this case, the stepped space on the fourth floor works as a recreation lounge. A 3d-print prototype study went along with the design of the space.
Radiating from a Central Contemplative Core, Diverse Programs Flourish at the Periphery.
Interaction with the City
There were two problems found during the material study. One was how to make the library fit in this crowded community, and the other was how to make this public facility more 'accessible ', under the circumstance of having many ' setbacks ' around the site. The polycarbonate facade solves these two problems by giving the building a lightweight feeling and allowing people to see through the translucent wall, both from inside and outside.

The building features two 'voids' for a staircase/lift and a lig lit court, with the latter's oversized space offering potential for conversion into different functional programs.
In each unit, individual shower spaces were eliminated, compelling residents to utilize a shared 'communal shower room' for bathing purposes.
The individual shower rooms have been consolidated within th e original lig lit court area, now bifurcated into two sections: one for enjoying views during showers, and the other for natural sunlight exposure.

Housing Adaptability
After all it is a 'housing' project, indicating the design of each housing unit is a important aspect as we ll. Adaptability has a lways been regarded as an essential spatial quality and has a lways been the goal pursued by architects. In order to reduce the living cost for the potential residents in this ' thermae cohousing', the changing needs of them must be taken into deep consideration.
Scenario 1
The sliding door in the kitchen is opened , and the 'adaptable space' will be used as dining room.
Scenario 1
The sliding door in the bedroom is opened , and the 'adaptable space' will be used as study room.
An ' adaptable space ' is designed for each type of housing unit. For double-bedroom units, the idea of creating an 'internal ring' is applied. Closing off either openings will result different programs in the adaptab le space. Whereas for the singlebedroom space, the 'adaptable space ' is located in the bedroom, and can be turned into a study room, or a temporaty bedroom with the help of the foldable desk and sliding door.
Scenario 2
The sliding door in the kitchen is fully closed , and the 'adaptable space' will be used as another bedroom. Dining will be on the island kitchen.
Scenario 2
The sliding door in the bedroom is fully closed , and the 'adaptable space' will be used as a temporary bedroom.
