olkswagen India has found redemption through exports but that does not mean that the car company has given up on the Indian market. After substantial upgrades on the Polo and then the Jetta, the company is now updating the Vento sedan with a Passat-like up-market chrome-loaded front and superior interiors. Also on the anvil is the launch of the new Passat, the reveal of the new compact sedan at the next Auto Expo, as well as launches of the new Beetle and the new Tiguan as our Top Story discovers. Also in this issue we have first drives of the updated Hyundai Elantra and the Toyota Camry Hybrid as well as first drives of the new Audi TT coupe, Porsche Cayman GT4 and the all new Jaguar XE. It was the Range Rover Evoque that turned Landrover around and now the big question is whether it will be the XE that will change Jaguar’s fortunes. While the Evoque was riding on the wave already created by the brand flagship, the Range Rover, the XE will have to lead the way as the new XJ will actually be preceded by the new XF. First impressions of the XE are pretty favourable and now we have to wait and see how much premium will the buyers be willing to fork out over the German competitors for this Brit with extra style and as much substance. This issue is also a comparison special as we pit the compact SUVs on steroids, the Mercedes GL A45 AMG and the Audi Q3RS against each other. This is followed by two stable-mates going against one of their own in the shape of the Old Mini and the new Mini in a test with a difference as well as the Cayenne going against its smaller and younger sibling, the Macan. In addition with pit two Italians against each other with the Fiat 500X going against the Ducati Scrambler in another off-beat comparison. Apart from all the regulars, this issue also has ABM, our monthly motorcycle section in which we take the two new Triumph Tigers for a spin in addition to updates on the Suzuki Gixxer and the Yamaha FZ-S. So enjoy another packed issue and drive and ride safe till the next time. Yogendra Pratap Editor yogendra.pratap @autobild.in twitter: @YogenPratap

FIRST TURN

One legend making another Sachin! Sachin! We are sure you would have heard those chants in a stadium or on your television at some point of time or the other. But imagine hearing those chants at BMW’s Chennai plant! That’s because the legend, Sachin Tendulkar, was happily assembling a BMW 5-series sedan at the assembly line. The catch was that the parts he used were sourced locally. In accordance to Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” campaign, BMW has increased the localisation percentage of its cars to more than fifty per cent. Some of the major auto components sourced locally are the engine, transmission, axles, door panels, wiring harness, exhaust systems, HVAC units etc.

The big from Volkswagen Volkswagen has been working hard at offering more cars in India. Here is the gameplan

10 www.autobild.in Vol. 7, Issue No 22, June 5, 2015

he German giant Volkswagen has not been able to get the sales charts on fire. But all that could change as the company is planning to launch a slew of models in India. The four new models include the new Tiguan, Beetle, Passat, a facelift version of the Vento and finally a brand new sub-four meter sedan which will be launched at the forthcoming Auto Expo in 2016. So let’s take it one car at a time.

Volkswagen Tiguan

Set to arrive in 2016, the nextgeneration Tiguan will be offered in three versions in order to boost its sales: in standard guise, in the XL version (long wheelbase version developed especially for the Chinese market) but also as a CC with a coupe-like roofline. Customers will probably not see the upcoming Tiguan CC as a rival for the BMW X4, as this model will likely be cheaper than its Bavarian rival. Regarding the

design, expect this new model to arrive with design elements found on concepts such as the Cross Blue Coupe but also inspired by the new Passat B8,

Volkswagens. This will include the ever so popular 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine but also the 1.8litre TSI petrol engine. Engine tune will be market specific.

Four new cars to be launched by Volkswagen this financial year which has just made its official debut recently. Under the hood, the secondgeneration Tiguan will use the same engines found on other

The new Beetle was revealed recently and VW will use this car as their much vaunted halo model. The new car sports a sharper

design and looks mature as well. There’s even a 217bhp Rline version, with 20-inch alloys which could also be launched in India considering that it is a CBU operation.

PassaT

The Passat was amongst the first models which VW launched in India. Now the company will launch the latest generation version of the same. Sporting the new VW global face, the new Passat looks and feels more luxu-

VW has given the Vento another minor facelify. The Vento gets a new pair of headlamps, bumper and grille up front. Tail lamps are new and look sportier than before. The boot gets a little more chrome. Interiors have also gone through an upgrade. The silver inserts on the dash is new

Volkswagen rious than before. VW has also loaded the Passat to the gill to ensure that it does not matter whether the owner is a driver or a passenger. Under the bonnet, the new Passat will make use of the tried and tested 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. The Indian edition is expected to churn out around 187bhp and will be heavily retuned.

Vento

The Vento which is sold in India is also about to get a major overhaul. The new Vento will get a new bonnet with more pronounced lines for a sportier image. The grille will be new with a triple slat design. The airdam too has been widened. Other changes include new front fog lamps, new chrome lined door handles and a new set of alloy wheels. At the back the tail lamps have been reworked and more chrome is added. Inside the new Vento gets a fresh colour treatment and additional

sub-four-metre car at 2016 expo features which include a cooled glovebox and cruise control. Mechanically the engine options remain the same but VW has retuned the engine to extract more fuel economy. VW claim that the efficiency has gone up by up to 7.5 per cent.

CompaCt sedan

VW is also working on a compact sedan which will take on the likes of the Hyundai Xcent, Maruti-Suzuki Dzire and the Honda Amaze amongst others. The new compact sedan will be unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo and go on sale immediately. The new car is based on the Polo rather than the Vento. This means that it will sport a shorter wheelbase as compared to the standard Vento. VW will equip it with a 1.5-litre diesel engine as well as a 1.2-litre petrol engine. VW also claim that inspite of this being a sub-four meter car, the design has been worked upon very carefully to give it a smart and proportionate look. The ‘make in India’ strategy will help keep costs on check.

Over the years the Beetle has grown considerably. However in India this is going to take charge of being their halo car. It is going to cost a lot as well

THE new Discovery Sport is the replacement for the Freelander. It gets the new Discovery family progressive design, now looking closer to its Range Rover siblings. Versatility ranks high and all Disco Sport models get 5+2 seating, thanks to a new multi-link rear axle that frees up interior space behind the second row. Ride and handling is also said to be improved. The 2.2-litre turbodiesel continues to do duty though a new more efficient eD4 turbodiesel is expected later on.

Ford Figo, 2015 FORD is getting ready to launch the new Figo. Apart from the fact that it is going to sport an all new design, Ford will also launch the sedan version. The Figo will come with a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Internationally, Ford has offered the new three-cylinder 1.0 (naturally aspirated) engine in these cars. Capable of generating 85bhp, it is also possible that Ford just might offers the same in India.

Future: Upgraded Toyota has given the Camry Hybrid an upgrade. We drive it to find out how much better it is than before Pictures: PAWAN DAGiA

Toyota Camry Hybrid

A

s I drive into the portico of a posh hotel in Lonavla, the valet, a burly Sardar steps towards my car. I hand over the keys and walk towards the lobby. Halfway there, I turn back to look at the car and - it’s exactly where I left it! I quickly walk back and ask the valet what happened. His confused reply was that the car was refusing to start. Sudden anxiety took a hold of me - Did the car break? Is there a short circuit in the ignition somehow? Putting these

thoughts aside, I peeped in over his shoulder to check if all was well. Little did the valet know, the car was already running, the silent eclectric motor ready for a dab of the throttle and Drive

the helm of the Camry Hybrid. But there is more to this car than just the tech. The Camry has been given a facelift and this includes a new pair of headlamps complete

The Camry Hybrid comes with a silent cabin that’s let down by the noisy tyres to be engaged. Just as my valet friend, most of the Indian janata is unaware of hybrid tech. But Toyota has found this segment to be lucrative and today I’m at

with projector lights for the low beam and LED day time running lamps. The grille is new and so is the bumper. The entire front end gets a sleeker look

than before. At the back too, the lights have been reworked and so has the bumper. Toyota has also added a few fins around the ORVM and tail lamps which supposedly add to the aerodynamic efficiency. But where this car shines is inside. The dash is simple yet effective and the console design allows for lot of storage space. The instrument cluster is also designed elegantly. The hard plastics used is not something which we liked, soft touch plastics would have

The dials looks classy and offers ample info. No tacho here. The rear AC vents (right) work wonders in cooling the cabin

The cabin looks and feels plush. There is ample space both up front and at the back. The hard plastics give the plot away though. The rear centre armrest (top right) offers controls for the seat, aircon and audio worked wonders. Toyota has also loaded the Camry with a lot of goodies. The 3-zone climate control is tuned to perfection and can cool the rather large cabin in seconds. But the real place to be is the back seat. An eight degree reclines ensures that the owner can relax while being transported. The central armrest hides controls for the audio and climate control. The seats are comfortable and there is plenty of room to move around. Individual window blinds are also a good touch. A set of AC vents are also built into the rear seat panel and optimises the cooling process. Start the car up and there is nothing but silence. Shift to Drive and the Camry Hybrid pulls out quietly. One can opt to drive on pure electric mode (left). Push to start button. The engine is very smooth and offers plenty of power. The E-CVT helps in efficiency the electric motor is charged by the internal combustion engine and at low speeds propulsion is mostly through the motor. However, when you step on it the 2.5-litre petrol engine joins in. It is powerful and can handle the weight of the sedan with

ease. Getting to high speeds is not much of a problem and once there, the Camry Hybrid can cruise all day long without any fuss. On the downside, the E-CVT transmission makes the driving experience not so fun. Once one steps on it, the engine

revs shoot up though the box takes a while to find the right ratio. With a lighter foot, Toyota claim that the Camry Hybrid can offer upto 19.16kmpl. On the move the Camry remains calm and composed. The suspension absorbs bumps and The Camry Hybrid gets new tail lights, bumper and chrome garnish. There are small fins atop the lights which aid aerodynamics

ruts with ease. But as speeds climb, the car does feel a bit floaty. Rather than carving corners, it glides through them. Importantly, the NVH package is top class. However what affects comfort is the tyre noise which creeps into the cabin.

What we like Features The hybrid is loaded to the gills. We loved the rear reclining seats

What we don’t Tyres The cabin is pin drop silent. The only noise comes from the tyres especially on concrete surfaces

! What surprised us

Price There is not much difference between the price of the standard car and the hybrid version

Verdict The Toyota Camry Hybrid to begin with is best referred to as a passenger’s car. The best place to be is the back seat. The ride at lower speeds is great but as the speeds rise, the car tends to get twitchy. We loved the reclining rear seats and the fact that one can control most functions from there. Most importantly as a hybrid, it’s not priced much higher than its standard variant. Rahul Ghosh

The integration of the aircon control on the vents allows for a smooth and clutter free console. The flat bottom steering wheel suits the TT well 1. The paddle shifters are easy to operate 2. Just a handful of buttons on the console 3. Most functions can be operated via the steering controls 1

T

he TT began life with a more rounded off design. However from that time the global design philosophy of Audi cars have seen quite a radical change. So with the third generation model, the TT sports a more mature and aggressive look. The sharp front end is accentuated by the menacing Matrix LED light system and the signature Audi day time light. In short, in the rear view mirror the Audi will sure catch considerable attention.

2

In profile the roofline sweeps into the rear section and somewhat offers a very proportionate visual. The rear three-quarters also mean business in this Audi. The twin exhausts announce its

constant eyesore. It sits beautifully into its own cavity when not in use thus giving a smooth flowing visual. Getting into the TT is also much easier considering it is a

The TT offers the best of both world. It drives like a dream and handles well power while the electronic spoiler shoots up once the car has gained speed. The beauty of the whole thing is that the spoiler is not a

coupe and a sporty one at that. The good news does not end there. The interiors are truly sci-fi and belong to the future.

3

We love the way Audi designers have removed clutter from the centre console. The aircon controls have now been neatly integrated in and around the vents. This gives the TT dash a smooth flowing look. The virtual dash is also another brilliant peice of equipment which allows the driver to select what ever info he wants to view. Even the Audi Drive Select options are beamed here. The other great thing about the Audi TT is the steering wheel.

The Audi Virtual Cockpit is surely the future. It can be adjusted to view just about anything associated with the car. It also looks good and the design looks simple and easy to read. The rooflight unit (top right) is now feather-touch activated therefore increasing the finesse factor 28 www.autobild.in Vol. 7, Issue No 22, June 5, 2015

Audi TT Coupe

Spoiler sinks into the leading edge of the boot lid at low speeds keeping the harmony of the design intact

Audi TT Coupe It is a flat bottomed unit which offers good grip and looks briliant as well. Needless to say, the TT also comes fully loaded with a high end Bang & Olufsen audio system, leather all around and so on. But the fun begins when you start up the 2.0-litre TFSI motor. In normal drive mode, there is little to stop you driving this car on a daily basis. Minimal noise creeps into the cabin and the 6-speed S-tronic gearbox shifts

gently up the ladder too. But put it into Sport mode and the TT changes its colours. The engine note is more pronounced and the revs hold longer. The shifts are quick and this allows for rapid increase of speeds. Audi claims a zero to 100kmph dash in 5.3 seconds and that seems spot on. Top speed claimed is 250kmph and we think that’s easily achievable. What we loved was the exhaust note while downshifts. There is a pronounced bark which sounds

fun and adds to the whole driving experience. The other feature we loved on the TT was the ride quality. Boasting a taut suspension setup, the TT absorbs bumps well without inflicting bone-jarring jolts. It also handles like a dream and stays planted on the road even when it is touching top speeds. But the best bit is that it also offers ample clearance therefore making it a good everyday drive.

What we like Cockpit Audi Virtual Cockpit is innovative and gives driver easy access to all info.

What we don’t Cockpit While we love it, the passenger can’t really use it and that’s a downer.

! What surprised us The TFSI engine offers ample power to allow the TT to cruise at 200kmph all day long. Top speed claimed is 250kmph

Practicality The TT inspite of being a sports car can handle day to day chores with ease.

Engine: 1,984cc, 4-cylinder Power: 220bhp@4,500rpm Max torque: 370Nm@1,600rpm Gearbox: 6-speed S-Tronic auto Wheelbase(mm): 2,505 LxWxH (mm): 4,177x1,966x1,353 0-100kmph: 5.3s Top speed: 250kmph (claimed) Price: Rs 60.3 lakh (ex-Delhi) On sale Now

Verdict The Audi TT has literally evolved from a car with soft corners. It’s now edgy looking, with the power and handling to back up its sportscar credentials. At the same time it’s comfortable, easy to drive and not that extreme that it scrapes its belly over every speedbreaker. Rahul Ghosh

New Jaguar XE

Jaguar brings sporty back The XE is committed to its sporty genes and is ready to take on all the middleweights that Germany can send its way

A

udi, BMW, Mercedes are contenders for the crown of automotive creation? Well, you are right there. Because with the XE, Jaguar now has a sedan that will still provide the feel of a German middle-class sedan with added zing. The A4, 3-series and C-class sure have their work cut out for them. The XE is replicating the size of the three Germans. The result is a slender, elegant four-door. The long wheelbase (2840mm), short overhangs, flat construction is all polish and consistency. ADVISOR YOUR PRACTICAL MOTORING GUIDE

TIP FOR THIS FORTNIGHT Always look under! When checking a used car always look under the bonnet for telltale signs of neglect. Make sure the engine and chassis numbers stamped on the firewall matches with that on the original registration certificate and insurance papers. In case, the numbers are not readable or damaged, stay away from such vehicles as it could be a stolen car. A squeaky clean engine bay should be just as alarming as an overtly dirty one. The previous owner might have cleaned the grime to hide a major problem. Another no-no option is an engine which is completely covered with oil, since it indicates cylinder leaks which is an expensive fix. So whenever you are out for looking at a used car for purchase, please keep all these things in mind.

Stranded on the road! Most of us have experienced our car giving up on us at the worst possible moment. We list down a few possibilities wherein your car can die down on you

So you are all set to go to a friend’s wedding and just as you enter your car and crank the engine, you don’t get as much as a whimper from it, let alone it starting. You are at your wits end and do not have a clue as to what can be the reason for

your car dying on you. We tell you what are the things to look out for that could be preventing your car from starting.

Fuel Filter

One reason for your car engine not firing up is a clogged fuel

filter. The fuel filter should be cleaned at periodic intervals and changed at every 20,000km. So call up the service helpline of the manufacturer and ask for a mechanic to be sent to the spot where you are stranded.

some other mode other than ‘P’. Automatic cars only start when the gear-shifter is in the ‘parking’ mode. Engage the brake and put the car in the ‘parking’ mode and then start the engine. This should do the trick. If you have a car with a manual gearbox, then press the clutch fully and start the engine. For example, all Hyundai cars start only when the clutch is fully pressed. This is to avoid the sudden jump in case you left your car with the gear accidentally engaged. Remember to put the gear in neutral before switching it off.

Also check for corrosion on the battery terminals. Corroded battery terminals restrict the flow of current to the starting motor. Clean the terminals with a wire brush and apply some petroleum jelly on the ends. This should Faulty ignition switch If the battery is fine and still your sort out the problem. car does not start, chances are spark plug problem that the ignition switch might If the starter motor starts spin- have developed a fault. Turn the ning but the engine does not fire then it might be possible that the spark plug is played out. Either its wet or non-functional. Dry the spark plugs and the leads with a blow dryer or a soft cloth.

If you forget to switch off electricals such as the headlights, fog lamps, parking lights, airconditioning etc then the battery is bound to drain. Batteries nearing the three-year mark take a longer time to recharge as they are at the fag end of its life cycle. Switching off all the electricals before cranking your car will reduce the load on the battery gearshiFt If you have a car that has an and making it last longer. automatic gearbox then it might DeaD battery be possible that the car is in A dead battery is the most common reason for cars not starting. If you have a battery tester, which can measure cranking amps, then test and check if your battery has enough power to turn the starting motor. Another alternative is to jump-start the car. Jump-starting a car is not rocket science but it does need a little bit of knowledge in order to do it correctly. Car batteries can lose their charge for a number of reasons. For example, if you leave your lights on, it will drain out the battery completely.

key (not all the way to the ignition) so that the telltale lights on the instrumentation cluster light up). If it is happening then the battery is clean. Turn the lights on and then start the car. If the lights dim when starting then

the ignition switch is fine. If not, then it might need replacement. So, the next time your car dies down on you, do not panic and call the helpline.

JUMP-STARTING A CAR

Do not try to jumpstart

Distributor cap

The distributor cap is least likely to be faulty if your car refuses to start. The moisture on the cap usually is the culprit. Remove the distributor cap and check for moisture. Even a tiny droplet of water can cause problems. Wipe it clean and dry with a cloth. Check for cracks on the cap. If you find cracks on the distributor cap, then its time to replace the same.

If the electrolyte solution is frozen. If there are cracks in the battery casing. If you see white/green/blue acid dust on the battery terminals. If the batteries on the two cars have different voltage.

Like any other normal battery, a car battery too has positive (+) and negative (-) terminals. The positive end of the battery usually covered with a rubber casing and has a bunch of wires attached to it, while the negative end is just a plain black uncovered cable. Take one end of the jumper cable and attach it to the positive end on the dead battery. Now take the same cable and put the other end on the positive end of the fully charged battery of the other car. Take the other end of the cable and put it on the negative end of the charged battery. The other end of the cable should be put on to the engine block of the car

with the dead battery. Do not connect the negative ends on both the batteries. Keep a distance from the hood of both the cars and start the car which is providing the jump-start and do not light a cigarette. Wait for a few minutes and start the car with the dead battery. If it starts you’re good, otherwise try again after five minutes. Do not crank the car for more than thirty seconds at a stretch. If the car still doesn’t start, its time for you to call the tow service. Your car has finally given up on you. Remember to remove the connecting cables in the reverse order. This means that the first wire to be disconnected is the one on the engine block.

Unconventional choice

From Rs 5.3 lakh The Ford Fiesta did not quite do well when it was launched. But it does make for a good purchase as a used car

The new Fiesta is not exactly a sedan that you commonly see on roads. The model did not set the sales charts on fire but is a decent vehicle in itself. The oddball styling might be a putting off feature but it still has sold a few numbers.

What to look out for?

The first and foremost thing to look out for is if the model you are looking for was a part of the recall issued by Ford. It had issued a recall for 3,072 units of the Fiesta in order to rectify a problem in the glow plug control module in some of the diesel variants of the car which were manufactured between October 2010 and December 2011. A fault 36

in the glow plug module of a car can lead to starting problems, especially in cold weather. So if the model that you want to purchase was a part of the recall then do check if the glow plug module was replaced or not. Also, demand for a receipt or a confirmation of the same. When you are taking a test drive, be sure to check all the electricals and the functioning of the buttons and Ford’s Sync system. Not that there has been a problem with the same but it doesn’t hurt to be absolutely sure. The other thing to look out for is the clutch. If you feel there is a long travel and the movement is iffy, then have the The interiors of the Fiesta remind you of the EcoSport. The materials used clutch mechanism inspected by are pretty much the same. They are hard-wearing but don’t age well

Slowly but surely, cars also became smarter, being enabled with Bluetooth, which not only keeps you connected and distraction free but also helps you to play your favourite music on the go. But what if your car does not have Bluetooth? This is where the Tantra Fluke comes in handy. The device itself is a simple, easy-to-use thing and

Swastikas and four-ringed cars Mike Breslin’s new book weaves together Nazi politics and Formula One racing for a heady mix of speed and spies.

It’s no secret the Nazi government heavily funded the German racing teams- Auto Union and Mercedes, in the early half of the 20th century. In fact, most decisions regarding the running of the teams, including picking drivers for the teams, came straight down from Hitler. In 1936 a foreign driver was chosen for the first time, specifically one of a non-fascist nationality (Britain), was chosen by Hitler to drive for Mercedes. This story inspired author Mike Breslin to pen an alternate history where this British driver is forced to choose between service to his nation and putting the sport first. Set in the same time period, Pieces of Silver builds on historically accurate facts and adds its own twist of drama and subterfuge. Between the real-life personalities introduced and the ones made up, it’s hard to tell how much of what you’re reading was, or could be, true. Reading like a classic Alistair MacLean thriller, Breslin writes in the details of motorsport racing of that era as only a fan could. It’s a light, engaging read and kept me with the story even way after common sense dictated I should turn off the lights and go the heck to sleep. Proving that you can’t really go wrong with fast cars or nasty politics.

ildlife activists in India love their tigers. Thanks to their efforts, the national animal’s population has risen to 2,200 when last surveyed in 2014. In the automotive world, we love our Tigers too. And in the same year Triumph Motorcycles in India claimed that the Tiger was their best selling model in India; a testament to the bike’s popularity. This is the Tiger 800’s first major update since its international launch five years back. The Tiger 800 was an immensely capable machine and it still is but considering that most owners spend more time on tarmac than off-road, the need for a road-biased machine arose. Meanwhile, the 800XC’s specs alone make its off-road intent obvious – tall and narrow 21-inch front wheel, high seating position and long-travel suspension. At the opposite end stands the new XRx, the R hinting at the road-biased trim. A smaller but wider front tyre is better suited to cornering and cast aluminium alloy wheels mean that repairing punctures is a much simpler task, further aided by a centre stand which now comes as standard. Seat height for the XRx is at 830mm and can be dropped to 810mm by simply adjusting a stay bar under the seat. This means the average-heighted Indian can have the ball of both their feet placed on terra firma with confidence. The suspension- non-adjustable Showa’s

All these allow varying degrees of rear wheel slip and intervention when

For its size, it is easy to manoeuvre things go out of hand. There is also the option of switching traction control and ABS off for those who like to attack trails the old-fashioned way, although you have to be in the Rider mode to do so. torque on offer, you can be sitting in sixth and trotting about in traffic at 50kmph. Crack the throttle open and you’ll find yourself at more than three times the speed. The handling of the XRx can best be summarised as composed. Road manners are surprising for a machine that weighs 216kg, it’s as agile as a bike 60kg lighter. The XRx is eager to lean into corners, with gentle inputs on the wide handlebars offering leverage. The fairly upright riding stance is comfortable and commanding, offering a clear view of the path ahead. Smaller bumps and potholes are gobbled up with ease, at times without the rider even feeling them. The most welcome addition for both bikes has to be the inclusion of cruise control for long trips. Off the road, the XRx may not be as capable as its twin but keeps up with the Off-Road traction control mode keeping sliding in check. Though the XRx behaves best when it is kept on the black stuff.

once not a red supersports but an all-terrain machine with the look of the 1970s. Ducati Scrambler and Fiat 500X

Fine alloy wheels and blocky tread defies the Scrambler’s intentions

Underbody protection on the Fiat is just for show as is the wide rear tire of the Ducati

ing from yesterday, as is the whole bike. The Ducati Scrambler quotes a treasure in its history, it first presented the Scrambler in 1962. The high handlebar keeps you perched casually on the seat, the metal tank gives you the feeling you’re riding something genuine and unadulterated. Adding to this, the desmodromic valve control gives positive control instead of valve springs. It’s a Ducati trademark much the same way the Boxer is to BMW. What makes the Scrambler exciting and true to its roots despite the modern LED lights and overloaded round display is her lively temperament. She takes a good four seconds to 100, with a nearly 200 top speed which is more than enough to make sure the lame cruisers and retro bikes disappear in the rearview mirror. The typical longitudinally mounted engine, still a Ducati icon, tears off 4000 revs so vividly that your heart leaps under your jacket and your mind instinctively checks your protective clothing. The stiff suspension and snappy single front disc are good and give you the ability to take corners at good speeds with confidence. Only, the bite of the rear brake is toothless. Anyway, it’s definitely a bad idea to be on the Scrambler in jeans without protectors. So what do you wear then? The best bet is a helmet, leather jacket and don’t forget your designer stubble.

Ducati offers you immense customisation with a choice of four bike styles (the ‘Classic’ to a model called ‘Full Throttle’), aftermarket exhaust pipes, shoes, bags and caps. But most importantly, even without the music of the 60s the Duc is as much fun. No more electronics overkill. This, we guarantee you, will be a hit. A scrambler on four wheels is what the 500X is because it combines the comfortable raised seats

Ducati in the fielD Since 1962, the Italians appealed to US customers in the dirt. The Scrambler fulfilled the off-road appetites of Generation Steve McQueen as did the Hondas and Triumphs. The single cylinder went from 250 to 450cc, forming the distinctive kink in the bench seat. 1975 was its final year, after the classic Ducati is now attempting a revival of the Scrambler.

The old Scrambler used the engine and parts off a street motorcycle

with the big eyes of the old Fiat 500 which was, after all, born in 1957. The gentle curves of the small car are now brought to the level of a compact SUV, garnished with modern technology. A nine-speed automatic transmission has no one to compete with in this class but the two-litre diesel runs so grumpy that you better reach for the petrol. It has all the features of the expensive ‘Cross Plus’ version with all-wheel drive, which will never be used in the city. This Italian will never be towing a trailer rather it will be used between boutique and the beer garden at home. The money saved can be easily stuck in beautiful 18-inch wheels or leather with bright accents to further polish the rough charm of the Fiat 500X. The trend of the season is a rough shell with a soft core.

Short exhaust and stylish rear light - we will meet this Ducati again

verdict JOACHIM STAAT Triumph and Moto Guzzi brought out retro-bikes earlier. Ducati, though late, has the upper hand because the scrambler has more fire and incorporates modern as well as retro style. A 1200cc engine could be on the cards and will make the Scrambler really go.

A single stretch of highway on the outskirts of Delhi however, lends a little help to curb the cravings for a ride on a set of twisties. Time and again I’ve raved about the Gixxer’s corner carving abilities. Being the rightful segment leader now, the Gixxer had the task of shining through its competitors in the dynamics department. And so it did, taking the tried and tested formula of a lighter chassis and combining it with fat, grippy tyres. Add to that a rev-happy, stress-free engine and the Gixxer takes to the twisties with aplomb. Going down this stretch of highway is a pleasure on faster

The neutral weight distribution helps to easily flick the bike from side to side and the wide bars provide enough leverage to hang-off. The damping on the suspension is just right

The rear monoshock (top) offers preload adjustability but the stock setting is perfect. The soft compund MRF Zappers (right) are holding up well even after 5,000km to soak up undulations without disturbing the composure of the bike. Suzuki has found a near perfect middle ground between too soft and too hard a setting. What this also means is that regular commutes don’t leave you drained and uncomfortable. Around a corner, the ergonomics help in setting up the

Summertime sadness Some niggling issues have cropped up with the change in season and we’re grumpy about it

T

he summers are upon us and our Yamaha FZ 2.0 is looking a little different courtesy the dusty conditions. The plastics look faded and since most of them are in black, the bike suddenly looks much older than it is. Yamaha is known for its good build quality on the FZ but this sudden change, after a mere 4,000km and six months of running, puts me in doubt about the same. Of course, a good pressure wash and a coat of wax does put things back in shape but only for a short while and there’s no doubt that the original sheen of the plastics isn’t the same now. Apart from this, riding the

bike at a steady speed over potholes or rumble strips lets out a rattle from the rear section of the bike. It took me a while to figure out the source of the sound. After a couple of days of hunting around, turns out that the pillion seat has become loose and emits a rattling sound over rough roads. I tried to unlock the seat and locking it again, thinking that I might not have locked it properly, but the sound persists. The current fix has been loading up cleaning cloths in the under-seat storage to dampen the noise and provide a snug fit for the rear seat. Lately, the engine has also started to sound gruff and it has

56 www.autobild.in Vol. 7, Issue No 22, June 5, 2015

only been four months since the last service. This is too short a time for another service considering it has only run about 2,000km. Gearshifts have become hard too with the second and third gear becoming sticky. The efficiency figures too have been disappointing, hovering around the 35kmpl mark. This is far fom the claimed improvement that the Blue Core tech brings along. Yamaha needs to look into these small issues, which rather amplify with time. I’m sure they’re capabe of addressing these issues with just a little attention. Pawan Dagia

From 100kmph it comes to a full stop in 33.1 metres and from 200 it stops in 123.2 metres. It should come with a sticker on it that says “Caution! So going off the brakes, fixing the racing line and through we go. As the steering profile was meant to, it leads us effortlessly around the corner. The steering force feedback - is precise and perfect. Faster and faster we scare ourselves by harassing the Cayman. Luckily, Porsche gives you the option of switching off all the electronic nanny aids. So we get on the long and gentle left-hander and then give it full throttle. The car pushes sideways into the picture, we counter steer and roar through the scenery. Of course it’s a childish spectacle that mucks up our lap times and doesn’t necessarily fall under careful driving. But it’s damn good fun. Second, it looks awesome. And third, it provides real insight into the car. For example, that the GT4 absolutely does not respond treacherously even when 60 www.autobild.in Vol. 7, Issue No 22, June 5, 2015

For the official lap times, we again put on our seat belt and did a couple of laps without the sideways action. And we were quite surprised. Although we have already concluded this Cayman is of a completely different calibre, the GT4 is quite far forward indeed. Exactly

1:31 minutes forward in fact. Given this performance, even the price of the top-Cayman takes on a different perspective. The GT4 starts from 85,776 Euro in the price list. With all of the goodies that make our test car even hotter, it stands at 106,333 Euros and 25 cents on the invoice. But for this much money it’s also a very special car. One that still takes the concept of a sports car seriously and rewards its driver with sheer fun. And one that we will continue to meet ever so often. Displacement instead of turbo, no bling - basically driving pleasure above all else. That is why, at this point of time, we simply say thank you to Porsche. Thank you for this great experience.

wo mammoth Porsche SUVs in a test, together putting out more than 900bhp. Clearly, the two from Zuffenhausen are going to get a thrashing at the track. After all, every tenth of a second, every exit of a sweeping curve and the G-forces you’re able to pull, all adds up. But, that’s not all there is to the test this time. We have the father of the family

to think of. What can these cars do for the family that owns a Porsche as their everyday car? How much does it cost to keep these cars running? The Macan and Cayenne are not just cars with particularly sporty heritage, they are SUVs. Supposed to be practical, functional, versatile - and in the case of Porsche SUVs, of course, potent

family and cost with power. Okay, at basic prices of around 80,000 Euros (Macan) and 130,000 Euros (Cayenne) one can’t speak specifically of these two only. But someone who can afford the sticker price can’t avoid these Porsches – sport and luxury wrapped up in fourwheel drive. The top two models of the series are each petrol turbos. For a price difference of nearly 50,000

Both top spec models get twin-turbos

Euros from base, these two come with legit technical differentiators. The Cayenne makes 520bhp from a V8 biturbo, the Macan has to make do with two cylinders less and makes “only” 400bhp. It sends the power through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to all four wheels, while the Cayenne gets to speed with an eight-speed torque converter auto-

matic. In addition, the Cayenne weighs about 300 kilograms more for a total 2,270 kg spread over nearly 4860mm. The more “delicate” Macan is 4700mm. A small reminder - the Cayenne is akin to the luxury-class VW Touareg, the Macan is comparable with the middle-class off-roader, the Audi Q5. But enough of the theory, time to hit the track.

Well, what’s a good way to go through 8,711 Euros? How about coming to the racetrack in your Cayenne with the optional ceramics kitted and watch the discs light up. The ceramic composite discs on the Cayenne are necessary to bring the 2.3 tonnes of unladen weight to a stop quickly. In fact, it does better than quickly and brings the behemoth to a stop from 100kmph in just 35.7 metres. The little brother Macan does the braking tests in a metre less, taking just 34.6m. This is obviously because it’s carrying less weight and subsequently has less weight to anchor to the ground. On the ‘Motorsport Arena’ track in Oschersleben, the Macan makes up for the 120bhp power deficit and is neck to neck with the Cayenne. Thing is, the Cayenne is also putting out significantly more torque (750Nm vs 550Nm) that gives it better drive out of corners. All the driver has to do is bury the throttle and watch it scurry forward. This is also the evaluation of how the cars behave on the individual sections of the track. On the straights again, the Cayenne reaches a higher top speed. Also in the long curves of course, the Cayenne is a blink ahead of the significantly lighter Macan. Its wider (295 section) front tyres provide more grip here. Regardless of our measured values-the Macan

Though the difference between the two externally is about 15cm, that difference hardly translates into interior space. While the trunk of the Cayenne can take a total of more volume and heavier ballast (670-litres and 625kg vs 500-litres and 567kg). But the Cayenne can be made into a more flat loading area with a longer and slightly wider loading area. The back seats fit two adults, with three being a tight fit in both cars. In terms of interior width, the two are only four

The Macan, though rolling on huge 21-inch tyres is overall very comfortable thanks to its adjustable suspension and longer travel. At the same time, the Macan is quieter too, up to 160kmph we measured lower noise in the cabin. Another small but important difference, the active suspension makes a big difference and you can feel the more recent technology at work in the Macan over the Cayenne that has been around for years, though it can be optioned.

or us auto testers, comparisons are always a feast. Different manufacturers, different car characteristics. Quite different it seems there first, as BMW calls from Munich: “Do you want to test the new Mini five-door?” - “Thank you, we already have”. BMW replies, “No, we thought you can do a comparo!” - “Done already against Fiesta Sport!”. There’s a slight pause while BMW readies their response, “Not the five-door mini, the four-door Mini!” - “Umm, sorry guys, there is no four-door Mini. Check your brochures!”. At the other end of the line, a smile spreads, which extends up to Hamburg, “It’s there now! We have made a unique prototype. But based on the Cooper from 1998!”. Okay guys that really got our attention! Now it starts to get interesting. For a comparison of two different cars each of which couldn’t fail - they are incomparable brothers. Toothbrush and shaver packed, onto the plane, we expect maximum Mini fun. On the ground, we rub our eyes thoroughly for the first time. Not because we would have to spend the night at the airport due to pilot strike but because the two boys from the Cooper home are as different as day and night. Even though they’re both blue. The 3rd generation Mini five-door measures 3.82 metres. That is commendable for the Bavarian-Briton, especially compared to its ancestor who came from the factory at 3.05 metres. The Cooper from 1998 felt like it took forever to walk around. While humming ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, the measuring tape clicked in at 3.35 metres. Impressed, we look

Honey, I‘ve shrunk the Mini!

on while the guys from BMW still grin. They’ve probably not been able to stop grinning since the phone call. The car was built by Dierk Menger from Oldenburg. A former AustinRover dealer conceived the Long Wheelbase already made in the 1980s, then built three copies as appetisers for sympathetic wacky Japanese but the hoped-for demand amounted to nothing. So it drew to an end, right? Well, not quite. Mid-2014 BMW picked up the phone and commissioned Menger with copy number four of the Mini four-door. Menger and his men sharpened the shears, assassinated a damn good 1998 Cooper and went at it. Now we take in the rear space in this Mini and think there’s space galore, you can even read the Times

You can see just how the old Mini compares in size to the new Mini (left) The modern Mini scores in comfort and safety though leg room isn’t comparable to the old Mini (right). The Minis, both new and old, have the go-kart feeling. We give our best, most gracious Queen wave pose out the large un-Mini back seat

pleasantly laid out - we pull a smiling Queen wave out the side window. All around us people are watching and the sensation is perfect. In 1962, the British Motor Company had even crafted a four-door prototype. They even drove it but only around the storeroom of the manufacturer before burning it down. It never went into production because it would have been the same size as an Austin 1100 and thus competition for it internally. Onto the new Mini, it scores on the front seats. Everyone can find a suitable seat position, the ergonomics are great. The 136bhp, 1.5-litre three-cylinder starts, like a Yorkshire terrier whose blue-blooded owner you have just insulted. Suspension, brakes? No comment. It’s precisely Sheer Driving Pleasure.

Now, even in the old Mini with its 1.3-litre engine making 63bhp, it’s anything but boring. Even with the crazy long wheelbase. The action on the long gear lever is gorgeous. The little engine sings brightly from under the small cuddly hood. A feast for us! For this, the go-kart feeling nothing comes close to the original. Great Britain indeed! There remains the question of price at the end: How much do the two very different Mini Brothers cost? The new five-door comes from the factory at a cost of 20,600 Euros but with fun packages and front sports seats etc. it works out to 25,000 Euros. That will not be nearly enough for the Mini with four hand-crafted doors. The price is on request at www. mini-mengers.de. But driving it cost us nothing. At least not today.

The Mini has piled on the pounds since the early days but is still fun

You can get a lot to fit in the new Mini boot (278-941L) versus the good old Mini (160L)

At the end of the drive we grin together with the BMW boys. This comparison defies classification. It‘s too fascinating, the two different Mini brothers - Mini I and III in their long versions. The great thing: They are both available. But who throws the first penny in the piggy bank?

Front seats on the new Mini are supportive and adjustable, dash is informative and innovatively styled. The old Mini gets old-school clocks and a dash treatment that works fine for us

international Clash of the compact-SUVs

Second chance for The fastest small SUV is currently the Mercedes. But now the Audi RS Q3 has been sharpened. Can its 360bhp push the GLA45 AMG off the podium?

UVs are on every street corner. In all sizes, of all brands, in all price ranges. But a class has come to the fore in recent years: the XS-variants. The compact, lightweight, manoeuvrable SUVs that are much more reasonable than the big whopper à la BMW X5. However, if you are on the lookout for a cracker in this league, you’ve been dealt a bad hand. The selection is downright

puny. The top class, 300 horsepower and above, only has two manufacturers playing, that is Audi and Mercedes. The 360bhp strong GLA 45 AMG delivered the cake and ran off with it, it’s by far the fastest. And of course we have already compared the two but it was a narrow victory for the Mercedes. Primarily the GLA 45 won because the stocky star was ahead in key disciplines such as

braking performance, sprint ability and lap time. This little shame seems to have gnawed at Audi. Now, Ingolstadt has come up with this - the RS Q3. The 2015 model is up 30bhp, bringing it up to 340bhp, making it closer matched against the GLA. It is also crisp and somewhat modern (with more multimedia options available). faster than the Mercedes can rev its 2.0 turbo animal. Our mission is thus to repeat the whole test again, both powerSUVs must battle for sport appeal. So much in advance: the Audi now neatly heats up the competition with the Mercedes. It chases the Merc in the sprint to 100kmph and is only tenths off. When it comes to braking, the Audi stops five feet earlier. But a look at the performance figures at higher speeds shows that the better sprinting capacity is down to a more explosive start. helped by its efficient Sprint Start function. In pulling the bulky fivecylinder right next to the brutal turbocharged four-cylinder of GLA, the Mercedes even then has the Audi in its rearview but just barely. But what about when winding curves come into play? Here (at the Contidrom near Hanover) the firmer tuning of the Mercedes comes as a positive, though we wouldn’t want it for everyday use as the hardness can get a bit much. tyres, plus a great big engine makes for a package meant for fast lap times. After a tough ordeal for the car and myself, I managed 1:36.49 minutes of fun before the snarls of the AMG crossed the finish line. That’s about as fast as a Porsche Cayman! Now the Audi - it’s clearly slanted in the corners, the feeling of pressure on the brake pedal is organic, the steering response is minimally delayed, the grip from the front wheels tapers off. This is the 100-odd kilograms of the Q3 making its presence felt. Big plus though, the engine sounds like a really big motor thanks to more harmonious snaps of the gearbox. What does the stopwatch read? It’s still running... 37, 38 - now! So, 1:38 minutes make it about two seconds slower than the Mercedes. What this means for us is, on the track the Mercedes has the upper hand but overall the Audi assumes the lead. Because the differences in this one category is not the be all and end all. The Audi is more comfortable, gets more equipment and is a little cheaper (only the cost of insurance stretches its lead). Talking about the purchase price but not in such detail, they both start at around 56,000 Euros. We look at it as the price of something special. Something different from the cheaper SUVs that you see at every street corner and that makes them worth it.

Mercedes faster, audi better According to our points, the Audi is in front of the Mercedes. Because in the Q3 is stuck two cars - the sportscar and the all-SUV. In the Mercedes, we see considerably more glimmers of a racer and that’s what makes the GLA 45 so exciting.

Monaco ePrix proves fruitful for Renault The FIA Formula e-Championship made its first european stop in the series at Monaco. As is custom, the stars were out in full force in sunny Monte Carlo and large crowds, cementing the growing popularity of the sport. The Swiss driver Sebastian Buemi driving for the e.dams Renault team became the first driver to secure a double win in the series. Second and third places were an exciting tussle between the two Brazilians Lucas di Grassi and Nelson Piquet Jr which di Grassi eventually won, with Sam Bird bringing a last minute fight to the third place Piquet. This result also brought the third win for the e.dams Renault team, further extending its lead in the team classification standings over Audi Sport ABT and Virgin Racing. As far as the driver standings go, Buemi moves up to third place, just behind Lucas di Grassi and Nelson Piquet Jr. The Mahindra’s of Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok finished at 10th and 15th respectively. A special Formula e version of the track was prepared, incorporating the Start-Finish straight, a new right hander at Saint Devote, the swimming pool section and the famous La Rascasse corner.

INTRODUCTION it has been our endeavour to try and constantly improve our car buying guide to suit your needs. Earlier we were listing cars based on their design, but we thought that for a price sensitive market like ours, it would be better to categorise based on prices. Henceforth you will now find the range divided across nine categories based on prefixed price brackets broadly determining individual segments. This section is specifically designed to help you understand the new format of the car buying guide.

the motorcycle buying guide While the car buying guide section has been organised as per price segments for your convenience, the motorcycle section of the booklet has been classified as per engine capacity, which is the determining factor when an individual buys a motorcycle. Like in cars, the motorcycle section also comprises of info which is vital for making a choice.
