BRIEF semester 1 / week 7 The Introvert- My perception, my perspective

Theme The magazine with the working title KNIGA (Book) focuses on my personal memory of certain social, academic and lifestyle situations that I experience and have experienced as an introvert. Being an introvert lets me think, judge and experience certain life situation diff erently from an extrovert. From an introverts point of view most life situations are perceived and rethought before actions are taken. The world for us is about learning to understand ourselves before we can turn our minds towards other people and our surrounding. It is about our comfort zone, our appreciation of who we are and what we do. It is about exploration of the new we want to face to develop the self to what we want it to be. This magazine is looking therefore into ‘silent moments’, ‘body and self appreciation’, ‘nostalgia’ and ‘life expectations’. Market This magazine is a one-off publication that concentrates on slow fashion, however the styling is kept fresh and modern. The magazine’s aesthetic is modern, edgy and still ethereal. Furthermore it is aimed to place the magazine in niche magazine stores such as Wardour News or Horrods book shop. KNIGA is a publication that young readers between the ages of 18 and 30 would read who lives in a city and like to take time-off from the busyness surrounding them. Content The magazine has a minimum of 5 photo stories that feature outdoor and indoor shots as well as still life photography. The photographs do not necessarily overtake whole pages to create a natural frame around them. The size of the magazine in overall is kept around size A4 to have just enough space on a coffee table. The cover is hardcover and the paper is kept matte to reduce the destruction of light flares on paper. The paper is also in good quality that is thicker than usual paper to avoid folded pages. Presentation KNIGA has a clean, romantic layout and is designed towards a look of a coffee table book. Moreover it concentrates on visual imagery rather than text.

BRIEF semester 2 / week 4 The Introvert- My perception, my perspective > Perception of time > Cinderella’s path of life > Body and self-appreciation The magazine COMMA with the issue working title PERCEPTION is looking at hope for a better future in relation to appreciation of her existence, concentrating on perception of own body image. It is published for young female creative readers living a metropolitan lifestyle. Theme The magazine COMMA with the issue working title PERCEPTION is colourwise inspired by the fairytale Cinderella and focuses on my perceptive view on body image and self-appreciation. The working title Perception has been further inspired by my personal life as an introvert and my interest in appreciating and caring about every living thing (human, animals, nature) around the world, but also celebrating the fashion of the past and present and innovative lifestyle we are living in. This issue of the magazine is concentrating on the woman as an individual with acknowledging social and personal pressures she is facing; addressing different life situations such as past, present and future. It is a magazine for women, who are open-minded, easy-going, adventurous, energetic, imaginative, creative, but also smart, hard-working, ambitious, brave and self-confident. The magazine is aiming to reach young career women at the ages between 18 and 30, who live a metropolitan lifestyle. They typically work in creative industries and live in shared homes with other like-minded. They like cultural events and visit new places in towns they live in. The reader also likes nature and animals and appreciates any moment of silence whether in city or countryside. Market This magazine is a one-off publication that concentrates on slow fashion, however the styling is kept fresh and modern. The magazine’s aesthetic is modern, edgy and still ethereal. Furthermore it is aimed to place the magazine in niche magazine stores such as Wardour News or Around the World Fashion Publications NYC. Aesthetic is for me the main look of the magazine. This month I have started, besides deciding on a theme for my issue, also looking through other photographers work. I am mainly inspired by the work of the following photographers: Noell S Ozwald, Richard Avedon, Albert Watson, K r i s t i a n S c h u l l e r, T i m Wa l k e r, N i c k K n i g h t , M a r c e l C h r i s t , A l a s t a i r S t r o n g , O l i v i a j e c z m y k , D a vid parfitt, Dennis Pedersen. Whereas some names are familiar to me already for a while; a few other names I have discovered during my research. The fashion photographers I name here do have different signature looks, but they have all have one in common- striking images.

There are so many different themes I m interested in and two main different looks that are crossing my mind all the time during my research, but I cannot decide which one appeals more to me. I like on one side having a magazine that has the look of Noell S Ozwald‘s photography, because I also like mindful images that can speak with a single word. On the other side I m Tim Walker fan and like the opulence and theatrical drama that one image can demonstrate.

Every time I see images online or print I know exactly what I like, but I have difficulties to bring it on paper and communicate it to others.

It s a few days before submission of our work from semester one and I m finally getting somewhere. The last few days I have decided to create boards with images I like to see whether they create one look that could be hanging on one big white wall. I have looked through all my galleries in pinterest and weheartit to understand what I m into. I can say I have achieved a clear outcome that I can call my aesthetic for the final year project. This collection of inspirational images at the bottom shows my most favourite elements, which are reflection, abstract forms, symmetry, shadows, contrast, lights, gold, smoke. And the colour palette has also my most pleasant colours that I like having around me. This selection is a minimalistic, but very clear board of what i like to reinterpret in my magazine in a fashionable way.

The topic styling over-crosses with the topic market in this sense. I like doing different things; going to the cinema, eating out, bars, small live concerts, galleries. I imagine my reader to wear lace, nude colours, but also a lot of black and sleek fabrics. I didn t find that style in London, neither here in Edinburgh. I have to figure out where to spot them.

This month I have visited galleries and cafes in Edinburgh and I haven t done any progress on making a decision where I m going with my styling. One major issue I m facing with deciding what my reader wears and where it shops and how it home looks like is that I have problems to get my topic for the magazine narrowed down to a clear narrative. Every time I think I m walking the right path, I end on a big lake full of different topics again and whereas those look clear to me, some people see them as individual stories that worth to rip apart. And if I do that

I m at the stage having plenty of iideas, which are worth plenty magazine and not one. N

It literally took me 4 months to figure out that there is a term for the fashion direction I want to go and fashion styling I love 100% . It is called edgy romance. Finally, I built a final moodboard of mixed images that represent the photography style I am aiming to achieve. Whereas the styling will be edgy romantic and edited in my signature style, sharp, straight forward, black and white, in colour and maybe with a slight hint on blue hue. Those images look like paintings and so she gives the styling of the haute couture dresses a new extended look that explores it s story beyond the design studio and catwalk. Through the fashion of the designers and my research into different fabrics, I have noticed that lace is an important fabric and textile structure that I cannot live without, therefore I would like to get inspiration from nightwear worn in the 19th and 20th century.

Also as mentioned on previous page I have discovered the edgy romance is the right term to describe my fashion direction. I have researched images that have features I like and I am now pretty sure how the fashion will look in my magazine. Romantic, but still serious. Dark and still very bright. Next semester I will start to look closer into the history of fashion and fabrics to get inspirations for my editorial stylings. But, what I have looked into already are hair and make up artists that prefer creating natural looks and stylists that do extravagant opulent s t y l i n g s , w h i c h a r e i n a c a s e o v e r t h e t o p , h o w e v e r, a g o o d i n s p i r a t i o n s o u r c e .

The best way to design a thorough magazine is to create an aesthetics moodboard. Moreover to design a fashion publication that has a good look overall and speaks to one type of reader is to stay true to what fashion you want to represent, what colours shall dominate the overall look in the issue and how the photography will be interesting and easy to look at throguhout the magazine from beginning until the end. The second paper states: It is a strange fact, which we have not yet discussed, that Greek artists in the works we have seen have avoided giving the heads a particular expression. |It was the body and its movements which were used by these masters to express what Socrates had called ‘the working of the soul’. And the first paper makes a note about picture perception: ...think of pictures, not as something nice to look at, but as something powerful to use. ...All that is needed is the will to be absolutely honest with ourselves and see whether we, too, do not retain something of the ‘primitive’ in us.

Through my last mindmapping and theme search I got interested in the idea to create a Diary-magazine. I imagine to create the magazine with the narrative of telling a story about me. A story the goes over a day would be nice, to really bring the Diary-theme across. People write diaries because they want to t alk to someone, because they want to remember some thoughts. It is like talking to a friend, with the difference that a person c a n re f l e c t o n t h e m s e l ve s a n d t h e i r t h o u g h t s .T h e re s n o re s p o n s e f ro m s o m e o n e e l s e c o m i n g b a c k a n d y o u h a v e e n o u g h t i m e a n d s p a c e t o b r i n g a l l y o u r t h o u g h t s o n p a p e r. If I decide to do the magazine in a Diary style, I would need to specify what direction of thoughts and ideas I want to go in order not to end up doing vague narratives. I think on this stage I can go and look through my research from pages before and combine them into this topic. Nostalgia for example in connection to diary could include narratives around other decades and show what makes me feel nostalgic about the era. I could also talk about perscpective and perception and working my best to develop ideas to show ‘the world’ and styling in the way I see it. I could bring across with this idea that people perceive things differently that happen around us, because if we would think all the same there would be no judgment or questining only excist i n g . We a l l h a ve a d i f f e re n t p e r s p e c t i ve o n t h i n g s . I w o u l d l i k e t o l o o k m o re i n t o t h i s topic. The minmap Journey shall halp me to find certain topic that interest me. Also Quiet Mind mindmap is a great source to refer back to all the time during my process to build stories around a theme that i decide to take. The mindmap is so detailed and organized that I can refer to it with every stage I take to achieve progress with the magazine work. N

I have decided to concentrate on perspective and perception within the overarching theme Introvert. I would like to approach the magazine design in the style of a diary, where I pick up thoughts I have during one single day by means morning, afternoon and evening time and represent those ideas visually into fashion. Whereas it might go to be very psychological I will try to pick up on ideas that can support my narratives and help to bring it on paper in text and in form of styling. The feedback of this week has been very forward thinking. I m getting closer to my m a g a z i n e t h e m e , h o w e v e r, I r e a l i z e d t h a t h a v i n g a n e a s t h t i c i s l e s s o f a p r o b l e m n o w, as this will evolve when I have narrowed down my topic to a certain point I am certain to start work with. But looking at my theme perception and perspective from the viewpoint of an introvert, I m not sure where this decision could lead me. I m at the stage where I should think about shooting ideas, about chapters I want to feature in my magazine. I think deciding on that I will be able to narrow down my theme to the point I can start to work on my concept. This is the week 8 and I m running extremely behind. I m nevertheless very thankful t h a t I g o t t h e o p p o r t u n i t y a n d t i m e t o t r a v e l t o Yo r k t o s e e t h e A e s t h e t i c a S h o r t F i l m Festival. TIME I can see and experience time in some many ways. Sometimes it s standing still, sometimes it s moving too fast. It s all our perception of time. Everyone sees and experience the world differently. Differently people can look at one object or one place and have different thoughts. Noone thinks the same. This idea or way of thinking is similar to Time. Noone perceives it the same way. It might be the job you have, or the way you are feleing today, it mights be your environment or your social status, the time of the day or the location- Everything around us is responsible for letting us perceive the time we do it. There are a lot of thoughts to make how we think, or want to think, what we want to do with our busy and free time, how do we think for short and long period of time, whether we set plans for the future or live day by day. -----------------------My first step in the process to work on the topic Time started by creating a mindmap with all possible heading that come into my mind. Further more I have started to reseach into the term Time and find out more about what the word really means, through this approach I could achieve to dig deeper into the real meaning instead of scratching on imaginary surface. I have found interesting hints and new terms that a l l o w e d m e t o r e s e a r c h f u r t h e r. Extract from my Final Major Project Research Book. NOVEMBER Is it all about the muse I wonder? I have serious problems to say one single person inspires me in this momentum to do what I do. I have read a lot of articles about how to find out who is your muse, I have watched videos and I have googled all personalities I like, ranging from singers and actors, to artists and designers. I have also remembered film and anime characters. and I am as lost as I was. And this discovery brings me to the point where I want to say I am my own muse, because all p e r s o n s I h a v e i n m i n d a r e a l l c o m b i n e d i n t o o n e p e r f e c t i n s p i r a t i o n a l c h a r a c t e r, but also maybe it is Cinderella. Let me explain why I think I am my own muse. I don t say I am fashionable or I have pictures of me hanging on the wall, I don t say that I s h o w o f f. H o w e v e r, I a m f i g h t i n g d a y b y d a y t o g e t o n e s t e p c l o s e r t o w h e r e I w a n t to be in the future. I think about what I can do, what I cannot and everyday I try to cross the bridge to leave what I couldn t do behind me. I look at my body and set a bodypart I want to contrate on; are those my eyes, is it my hairI don t refer to a person when making myself ready, my hair lies how it wants to, I d o n t f o r c e i t w i t h h a i r s p r a y a n d h a i r s t r a i g h t n e r. I d o n t g o o u t s i d e f u l l y m o t i v a ted with the thought: Right Lady Gaga today I will rock the day. I more possibly say: Right Xenia, you are smart, you are confident, you are open minded, you are friendly and you will make this day to your own. Inspiration? I will close my eyes and daydream and meditate. I will cook something or turn on music, I m not talking about a specific singer in that case. I will go to the beach and listen to the waves and birds a n d a i r. I w o n t s w i t c h o n c o m p u t e r. M y i n s p i r a t i o n c o m e s f r o m m e a n d t h e n a t u r e ,

sometimes also from my mom. Because I can t say my mind goes always the same path, it is more of a thunderstorm in there. refering to this I might say, well Cinderella could be my muse. Cinderella... the normal girl who s forced to work. She is kind, brave, generous, loving and shows courage, a pure angel on earth, who doesn t get what she deserves in the beginning. Whereas to the end, luckily it s a happy ending, but I don t need to point that out. It s is really inspirational, inspirational to talk about characters, people and girls that hide from the world, maybe they are nice and loving and they care about everything and everyone, but noone would come to the idea to put them a glass shoe on. I would love to give them those, because those introverted characters are the ones who see everything clearly. They see the good and the bad, t h e y l i s t e n a n d g i v e a d v i c e . There are bits and pieces of inspiration I can use to experiment with lighting and styling to strengthen the look of my own signature style. The way the photographers use contrast, image cropping is what I can take from them, as I have weakness sometimes to find the right angle to shoot the object what leads to problems when image crop is preferred. Also the choice of colour is so important whether during the shoot or later in editing. I m good in composition, but sometimes I loose the feel for harmonic colour choice.

T H E S H O O T I D E A S This chapter gives an overview over the final 5 shoots I have produced for my magazine. The paragraphs state the development from first one line brief until the final concept. The magazine has been mainly inspired by the Cinderella story and therefore I was looking to have my shoot chronologically displaying the mood of darker colours to white to demonstrate the change from past times and memories to the future thinking.

THE STORY As the magazine has been inspired by the Cinderella story this shoot is one that features darker colours than other shoots. I want to recreate the mood of Cinderella doing her household work in her dirty garments, through an intense layering of different kind of garment ranging from underwear and tops to heave jumpers. Herewith I want also to suggest styling tips for the coming winter and give the reader ideas how hair and make up can be styled in combination with the layered garments. T H E M O D E L , S T Y L I N G, LO C AT I O N A N D P RO P S I m looking for a dark hair model to fit the Cinderella idea. I want the hair to have a messy look, and I would like the make up to be unstructured to imply the idea of a child putting it on. As this shooting idea is very good to take place in an arty environment I have decided to shoot it in the printing room of Heriot-Watt Universit y. The colours applied on tables and walls give a messy look without me trying to recreate the look, this gives a natural ordinary, but interesting setting. I would also like to use plenty props to suggest a happy situation with balloons, a rocking horse, toys, glitter and more. M

I have decided upfront to edit this shoot with low saturation because the images are overloaded in the background and it would look too unorganized if I would apply over saturation. My final choice of the images I will base upon full body and portrait shots. I want them to be some kind equally so none style overloads. Also I want to mix still life and model photography. A

This month I m finalising my editorial layout and retouching. The major decision I m ade for this shoot is to have the model looking away, because I want the reader to stay in distance to the character on images. I don t want the reade to identify itself with the person on images, I want the observer to feel free to examine the image without having the feeling to be looked at.

THE STORY This photoshoot shall concentrate on the themes Silence and loneliness I have researched into couple months ago. I feel it is important to have this topic in the magazine with the issue title PERCEPTION. Everyone experience nature and shapes differently. for this shoot I want to look into minimalism, shapes and forms, contrast and the idea of sending a girl on a journey through the field. A moment of silence, a moment of thought. T H E M O D E L , S T Y L I N G, LO C AT I O N A N D P RO P S I w o u l d l i k e t o h a v e a m o d e l w i t h l o n g h a i r, b e c a u s e t h a t g i v e s t h e i m a g e l i f e a n d i s the main character of the editorial. It is important to visually showcase the movement wind and empty space can create. I don t want the make up to dominate the look. PHOTOSHOOT AND EDITING I m close to my submissions and I was successful to shoot the theme last minute with two teams on two different days. For the first part of the shoot I went to the beach to shoot the ‚statues‘ created by wind. The second shoot included very to the topic matching design by a graduate student from the Edinburgh university. This shooting shall be contrasty as I shot against the sky and a neutral background. Eventhough the model was also in a foresty location, the location doesn t dominate th e overall look and can so be edited dramatic and contrasty.

THE STORY This photoshoot has a simply but very significant narrative. I feel it is important that women learn to value themselves without comparison to any other human being. Moreover they shall see that they are as beatiful as flowers, as strong and as important. T H E M O D E L , S T Y L I N G, LO C AT I O N A N D P RO P S It is all about natural beauty. I don t want strong make up, only some foundation to help smoothen the light on skin. I don t want any extra care for the hair and I don t want anything to distract from the female body. Therefore I want to shoot this idea in studio with high key light and open windows. The windows will give me main natural light that reflects blue colour on the skin and the additional lighting in studio helps with defining shadows on skin. A second shoot is needed to photograph the flower study. I want the images to be as sharp as possible to showcase the structure and forms of the plants. That style of photography will help me to showcase the comparison between flower shape and human body. M

THE PHOTOSHOOT AND EDITING I booked the studio in advance to secure a 3h session with a model that agreed to shoot bodyparts with me, and whereas I didn t see it as a problem her leaving on underwear whilst shooting, later on laptop I have noticed that I don t have so many shots of body parts that don t show stripes and fabric. Nevertheless, I had strong images without garments even though the choice was small. I m happy with the result.

They re layout and font use is simple and doesn t look overloaded. Most used fonts in those magazines are sans serif and handwritten style. I want to use about 3 different fonts in my magazine. Handwritten style for a personal touch, as I like the forms of such a font. Further I want to use a sans serif font for big easy reading text and heading for a simplistic and minimalistic look on page. In this case it would be the font Montserrat or Mesmerize. Further I would use a serif font for smaller text tha tmight be diffecult to read in small. For this I want to choose Didot.

L AYO U T This month I have created the mdocument for my magazine which will be 21 x 26cm as well as t h i s PA D a n d I h a v e s t a r t e d t o i n c l u d e m y p h o t o s h o o t s f o r t h e l a y o u t . I m g o i n g t h r o u g h t h e process by selecting up to 50 images of the shoot I like. Further I wait a few days and make a more narrowed down decision until I have approximately 20 images. Then I decide what images would look the best next to each other and tell the editorial story the best way. Only after that I start to retouch the images. That order saves me time to edit images I won t use at the end and helps to think about graphics and editing style that matches the story and page size.

I haven t done a cover magazine shoot, because I see the cover as part of the magazine and the majority of magazines feature the same model and setting on cover as they do in the content. Even though my new cover is not featured as a story in the magazine, it is the shot of the fashion film and having the cover based on the film merges both the print and digital visuals into one content.

This piece of fabric is an extra large image of a photograph/painting of a real life situation she has experienced in the past. She feels an intense need to escape into the past, and experience the moment again. The moment she spend in the countryside with her love. The photograph shows the back of a boy who is facing nature. After hanging the fabric on the wall and looking at the image, she tries to feel the same moment and in a way wishes it would teleport her to that moment. After looking around and being happy to see the boy again, she realises that the world around her is alive, but the boy is like frozen, he is not moving. After hugging him and trying to get any movement out of him she gives up confused and disappointed and turns her body and head against him. After closing and opening her eyes again, she realises she is back in the room with the hanging cloth on the wall that is portraying the same image as in the beginning. During the process of scouting locations I have faced difficulaties to find an affordable indoor location for my shoot. I have contacted The Biscuit Factory for a quota, which turned out to be much higher for the use of the premises for video shoots. Furthermore this month I have travelled to the Highlands to scout a location for my outdoor shoot with success. I have p i c k e d L o c h L u b h a i r a s m y f i l m l o c a t i o n a s i t i s t h e b e s t p l a c e t o c o m b i n e l a n d , w a t e r, f o r e s t and width within one location. Due to the location scouting problems I have started to rethink my storyboard and I also have started to work on moodboards for the fashion styling, which shall keep as many features as possible from the magazine to make everything looking coherent. Within th elast days I have build up a narrative that features the Highland location, one female model and a narrative inspired by escapism and native american life. This month we have also contacted Timothy London our film class instructor from second year to get a professional opinion on our fashion film narratives and development. Within the importance of creating a good fashion film (now and in future) I want to make a note of our conversation. Following answer he has given to my brief:

We d 2 7 / 0 1 / 2 0 1 6 2 1 : 5 3 Thanks for your visualisation Xenia. When describing a film do not describe actor‘s/ model‘s thoughts. These are possibly motivations as given by a director but do not constitute action. Emotional responses are created by the practical creation of the film. Describe only the action and setting on the screen. Can you send through: how this connects with your magazine? What effect do you want this to have on the viewer? how it works in a ‚fashion‘ context? who is your audience? My response to the questions are as follows: - The film supports the fashion shoot that focuses on taking time-out in the nature from hectic lifestyle in a city. Escaping city madness. -Falling into a 24/7 hour working mode is not ok. Escaping in mind to another world or going for an adventure is great. Motivating to break through the repeated lifestyle. -Adventurous, Bohamian, Native American look shall inspire some trends that are also suitable for urban environments. -Yo u n g c a r e e r w o m e n l i v i n g a m e t r o p o l i t a n l i festyle.

The conclusion after a personal meeting: keywords someone is in the wold what is happening? styling important. challenge environment for more. solid ordinary styling. remarkable ready extreme excitement music should have certain effect. choose music, don t let the computer choosing it for you. no rnb pop or soul. native american vibes. watch vicking films eg Dustin Hoffman ‚Little Big Man‘ Styling, Ritual.

------------------------------------------------------Taken from this meeting I have made my decision to continue my visualization of the film shoot in the Highlands, where I went for test shots. I also have started to follow his intructions to look further into native american life, music choice and film suggestions.
