PhytoKinetic: Lightweight Green Roof System For City Buses and Vehicles
Marc, in collaboration with IRACO Group, has chosen AQUAPRO SkyGardens systems recognized for their adaptability properties, water resistance, adhesion and resistance. For this occasion has designed a garden with a large variety of plants: grasses, perennials and herbs, such as thyme or rosemary. The AQUAPRO PY 5000 system - VYE designed and implemented by IRACO Group in this project, incorporates POLYUREA 100% PURE in combination with substrate VYDRO FLAKE, based on hydrophilic foam, able to save 70% of weight compared to traditional systems and store 30 times its weight in water, allowing space irrigation processes. It is currently studying ways to use water from air conditioners to feed the irrigation system and it is completely self-sufficient.
Practical considerations
Water retention The chart below can be used to determine the thickness of VYDRO® substrate needed to give the required water retention performance. It gives the water retention performance, expressed as l/m2, over the range thickness from 10 - 140 mm. The chart indicates performance both unloaded and with a typical nutrient and plant loading of 0.5 kPa. Water retention performance is calculated by the green roof designer and determined by the type of plants to be grown and the local micro climate conditions e.g., rainfall levels, seasonal temperatures etc. Reading off the water retention performance on one axis allows the designer to determine the thickness required. For example, a desired water retention level of 30 l/m2 will require the use of VYDRO® substrate at 30 - 40 mm. 100 90
Transporting VYDRO® substrate is easy. The material can be compressed, vacuum packed and easily shaped – dramatically simplifying supply and installation logistics, and saving significant amounts of time and money.

VYDRO® substrate is available as an (eggshell) slab – in various thickness options – or in flake or pellet form to mix with soil or other organic substrates. Geotextile fabric can be laminated on one or both sides of the substrate as necessary. VYDRO® substrate should be stored in a dry covered area at ambient temperature, away from direct sunlight prior to use.

VYDRO® substrate has been evaluated by a number of different independent testing institutes. Results show that it does not biodegrade when exposed to DIN ISO testing norms. Life expectancy should therefore be in excess of 25 years.
