The project’s site is part of a central city park in Essen, Germany. It is located in a relatively high-density urban environment. Therefore, the park is essential because it serves as the only natural and outdoor activity space in the neighborhood. How to design a theater that not only preserves the function of the park but also improves it was the challenge. The new theater will become the focal point in the park. Introducing a 3-dimensional platform for nature and people to communicate is the design concept for this project.

Site analysis

Design concept The idea of “communication“ could be seen from two aspects. One of them is the communication between people. The theater serves not only for the audience but also for people who live nearby. It provides a pleasant public space for citizens to communicate with each other. The other aspect is the communication between the building and its environment. Because of the green roof design, the theater is not isolated from the park, instead, it could be considered as part of the park.

P u b lic library design Location: Roanoke, VA Date: Fall semester, 2017 Professor: Scoot Gartner

This project located in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Lacking green spaces for pedestrian was one of the major planning challenges for the city of Roanoke. The site sits in between two major streets, the Salem Ave and Campbell Ave. The design intention for this public library was to provide a green connection between the two major streets. This green connection could also serve as the new gathering point for the community around it.
