PROLOGUE
A rc h i t e c t u re t o m e , c o u l d b e a reverberation to its both spatial and social context. The process of making architecture is a representation of relation hidden behind the design, including history and present, human life and communities, and the potential of different social roles. Not only did I draw inspirations from people’s living and working places, and seek the further relationship between architectural types and context, but I also comprehended the city’s details under given conditions, interpreted the epitome of the city, and then fused these elements into my works In this portfolio, I would like to try to extract these latent organizational logics to create new values that could influence the existence of architecture. Different results caused by harmonies and contradictions of those different relationships are the most attractive place for me, because the combination of rational analysis and emotional inspirations often enabled me to gain some unexpected ideas and thus keep the enthusiasm of architecture continuously.

Intervention on Residential Building
Studio Work Instructor: Prof. Ping Wang Individual Work Spring 2014
China today, when looking at an aerial photograph of any Chinese city, we will find those monotony residential buildings rising out one after another. People discard the variability of cultural life of different areas, to accept a new and universal way of life with the sense of reproducibility and sameness. This has become the habitus of the cities intent on rapid economic development and a large population centres. However, we human beings are social animals. What we need is a flexible interaction and communication with each other. By means of cooperation, we have our families, communities, and cities. This project is, therefore, based on the expansion of more social space to stimulate the spontaneous nature of the potential activity spaces in the compact living units, and revive some of the characteristic elements of urban life. The building is an integration system based on Chongqing specific geomorphology. The precondition of this project is to add one vertical space to stimulate and change the programmed and dull lifestyle owing to the horizontal sliced living space without interaction and social activities. Also, it will feedback and connect appropriately with the context to proficiently organise various inserted functions.
Concept Development Diagram 1 No Interaction Between Floors Our modern life seems to be rigorously programmed. Back from office, and take the elevator directly to our home. We even have no chance to know who lives upstairs.

2 Extend our Life Flow To increase the chances we meet and know our neighbours, add the branches to stimulate vertical connections between floors.
3 Cooking & Hanging in Corridor Due to the poor condition of low-rent house, tenant have to cook and hang the clothes in the corridor, a humid and corrowded space without sunlight and ventilation.

Preservation and Renovation for Industrial Heritage
Undergraduate Thesis Instructor: Prof. Wei Zhou Partner: Jianfei Yang Individual Constribution: Concept 60%, Drawing 60%, Rendering 50%, Model 50% Spring 2016
This project is located in Huangshi, China, a city focusing on the exploitation of rich mineral resources and production of industrial raw material. Just like other typical industrial cites in the world, around early 20th century, the establishment of Huaxin Cement Company profoundly stimulated and increased local economic growth with magnitude of its cement output. Also, the fabric of whole city was potentially influenced owing to its center location. Till the beginning of 21st century, because of outdated technical facility for cement production, the site was discarded with those factory structures and deserted machinery, and became a totally isolated void losing its connection with the surrounding. In consequence, such industrial heritages have become a valuable asset to represent us the industrialisation history, a great functional and cultural resource of human being. Since those historic structure and facilities contribute immensely to the attractiveness, distinctiveness and identity of places. By taking methodological approaches to the conservation and renovation of Huangshi Huaxin Cement Industrial Heritage, it will transform the site into a cultural and creative hub with city’s economic and social changes. The project mainly works around two considerations. When facing the transformation of an industrial city, what economy principles we may obey to guarantee economic sustainability. At the same time, with the site’s centre location in city fabric, what newly inserted functions and volumes we may infiltrate with to revitalise the void and fulfil specific programmatic needs of surrounding neighbourhood. We might even try to, through its renovation, provide people with a new lifestyle and define the character of a community by providing a strong link with the past, present and future.
The Dislocation of Places & The Dissolution of Scale
“the city is like a large house, and the house in turn is like a small city.” In spite of history, memory can imagine and reconstruct a future time of fantasy. — Aldo Rossi The Architecture of the City
Houses of Memory These industrial heritages serve to bring the past into the present, providing a past that can still be experienced, synchronising with the process of urbanisation. They are not defined only by an original or previous function, nor by their context, but have survived precisely because of their form—one which is able to accommodate different functions over time. Like the skeleton which is not living and has lost its original function, only its form remaining intact, the propelling permanence continues to function as a record of time. History comes to be known through the relationship between a collective memory of events, the singularity of place, and the sign of the place as expressed in form.
The Dissolution of Scale allows the individual building to refer analogically to the city as a whole. The design of cities lies latent in the idea of the individual building.
01 Structural & Spacial Types
02 Scale from Heritage
03 Cutural Practice evoking an architecture filtered through memory and narratives constructed over time, and offfering different layers of meaning to those who use it
Region Function System & Economic Model Transformation Region Reform Strategy Aiming at the status of "vacuum zone" of factory, from the view of reprogramming site inot city grim, to effectively lead the flow of traffic and residents path, a landscape connection establish the links of the site and city by the introduction of elevated bicycle path and undergroudn driveway. To cope with the transformation of economic model of the industrial area and to change the impression of industrial environment pollution to local residents, the idea of "urban farm" is ironically introduced, and a series of fundmentally functions are set up to meet the daily needs of residents and business demands. Weaving a more complex and closely linked urban ecology to propose a new direction to the future of Huangshi Huaxin cement heritages, and to change the existing isolation status.

Based on historical railway traces for importing original resources, a floating bikeway loop is assigned to connect the wharf of the Yangzi River and city road along the Ci Lake, providing a slow public traffic system to experience the whole heritage drenched in its history. And an underground driveway is inserted to intergrate the site into city grid.
02 Humanized Accessibilty Two main landscape nodes, owing to the original terrain features, are revived to perspectively connect the western road and eastern road, and linearly spread along the three main buildings to guide the people. And two memorial plazas are set as transitions from the south to the north.

03 HOUSE TO SEE THE SKY Design Insight And Spatial Innovation
UC Berkeley Summer Studio Instructor: Raveevarn Choksombatchai Individul Work Summer 2015
Build upon a strong relationship and reciprocity between visualisation and design, this project aims to make a clear distinction between a reproduction and an analytical abstraction. It will emphasise an act of design as a recognition of an abstraction forming and performing critical understanding of a set of relationships between materials (physical or corporeal) and ideas, through scale, orientation, and intersection. The existing case study of this project is a house named “ House to See the Sky”. By exploring the latent space organisation of this house concept, experiential qualities in three dimensional space is envisioned by developing translation from drawing and modelling to building, as an addition into the existing building with a new physical construct. The project begins with the concept of how the architect achieves the space to see the sky, and this analysis stimulate further consideration for “see the sky” from the outside into the inside with an abstractive geometry as a continuity to it original concept.

Figured Space: from 2D to 3D Three spactial condistions are chosen by reviewing the previous physical model as an abstract construct at full scale with its own inherent formal, spatial, and material properties, and crop it into a volume of 8” x 8” x 12”. What attract me most of three conditions is the sense of depth, all of them with the apparent shadows, black and white contrasts, even in two dimension.
Spatial Exploration It is a kind of unpredictable way with the result of such form based on previous three spatial positions. Concept comes later. Through the physical model of figured space, the most potential space is not the articulated solid, instead, the void embedded in the model seems to be several beams of consecutive light perforating and circumambulating at the inside, and intersecting at some certain special node.

The Inside to See the Sky The potential of the abstracted space is to introduce two main beams of light into the inside and intersect at the terraced gallery as an addition to the previous existing case and reorganise its original functions. To strengthen the concept "house to see the sky", the newly embedded void space is the continuity of this concept from the merely outside into the inside.
04 Sharing Architecutre
The Social Role of Architecture School
Individual Competition Work Fall 2016
For the public who have no relevant background, they have various individual perspectives to the architecture. And the architecture student, before occupation, they hardly have opportunities to deeply realise the public’s attitude. The gap of aesthetic cognition between architecture students and common people urged me to ponder on the potential of architecture school This project proposes a new identity for architecture school as sharing stage that welcome diverse publics. By including programs typically foreign to the architecture school, such as a park and a shopping store, the design strives to integrate the architecture school into the city’s everyday life. These shifts in program allow the school to become a place where perspective as well as aesthetic attitude is exchanged. The final building size and massing inevitably becomes a direct result of the combination of the different daily funcitons. It serves two purposes: first, to provide shopping, gallery, multimedia as an channel to attract local residents into the building. And secondly, at the centre, studio park, it is a latent trigger for them to interact with local people, and realise their various ideas.
How do Different Social People Think of Buildings? The first one is really weird, it's hard to understand the idea, and the second one I like it very much, not only because of the master's work, but also a great work of heritage renovation.
1
Well, I think the first one is really meaningful, since these three people present good fortunes in Chinese culture. And second one looks cool, however, I have no idea of its value.

The Gap of Aesthetic From the conversation between me and my neighbour, even though people know there is one occupation -architect, for the people who have no relevant background, some great architecture is hard for them to understand the perfect ideas and logics behind the building. Under most conditions, an architect could have considered the space, environment, and culture, however, which could possibly be difficult for the client to accept. And, Some weird ideas might come from the client, which are given important meanings by the client.

1 Development Potential To deal with the various bridges between social roles, corresponding spacial connections are supposed to feedback to the surrounding.
2 Set-back Requirements The set-back is given to the architecture of pre-concession district, based on the direction of building facade.
3 Entrence for Media As the bridges between local and media, the entrance along the main road keep the rhythm of surrounding buildings
4 Shopping Stores for Local Shopping stores are considered as the bridge for selling the work of artists and architects to improve public’s realisation to art and architecture.
5 Conection with Art Factory Re-imagine the space between art factory and architecture as the bridge for interaction and communication.
6 Volume Adjustment Adjust the layers of each side to meet different functional demand, and make some part of the roof to be available to local as a good place to enjoy and rest.
7 Centrel Studio The centre studio park is a place where architecture students would be observed by the outside local residents.

05 MOMENT ON EDGES
Research & Design of Pre-concession District
Studio Work Instructor: Prof. Wei Zhou Individual Work Fall 2015
Through the walking experience in pre-concession district, activities are captured and extracted by the observations to the urban life. I found that the pre-concession district has a kind of unique temperament, some different liveness comparing to the modern city. After several generations, the original concession district gradually shift away from rapid urban renewal, and form a sense of disorder, a slow lifestyle. I believe that these "slow" moments require the existence of some "hardware", perhaps a chair, a bar of light, a pot of plant, or a canopy. By following this rule, different types of interfaces are classified, and a series of various functional components are redesigned to meet the needs of existing areas with positive activities, continuing the ambience of this old urban district.

Soft Edges from Jan Gehl The general tendency for people to keep to walls is confirmed in public as well as private space, both indoors and out.You could say that life grows from the edge in towards the middle. Our backs are protected when we sit along the edge and good view of the space is in the offer. When the edge also has umbrellas and awnings, we can have an overview yet still be hidden in the shade. Obviously, this is a good place to be. 01 Piano Effect With the wall at their back, they find the place unpretentious and safe, and with a nearby piano or column they are not alone but in good company and in charge of the situation.
02 Niche Effect The pleasure of being almost present. There is something to lean on, protection against wind and weather, and a good view of what is going on
03 Edge Effect Wherever people stay for a while, they seek out places along the edges of space, providing good physical and psychological support.

Thus, we presume there modularised components could duplicate and combine on any edges as long as people need them, in order to guarantee a comfort edge.

06 CORNERS SHAPE LEGIBILITY
Urbanism + Architecture : A Continous City
Studio Work Instructor: Prof. Renee Chow Individual Work Fall 2017 UC Berkeley
City building is becoming a lost art. We need to see the long-term values in cultural sustenance as well as resource sustenance. The studio’s focus on SoMa (South of Market) in San Francisco, contributing to propositions about how discrete actions build a legible identity for this part of the city. By developing three-dimensional readings of and proposals for a corner site as an open, public market, focusing on vertical public space and what it contributes to this district of the city, and also desiring how residents and visitors occupy, and associate the urbanism of this city. The goal is to build a long-lasting urbanism, then the challenge is the capacity to accommodate change. The program will be changed for a library use to occupy the market structure. Modifications are supposed to both hold change and build the larger context of SoMa.
Sequence of Spatial Relationships Historically, this is born of the typological development of the house to fragments of the urban places. The house is defined by its relationship to the street, shallow in back facing houses, deep in front facing ones, leading to gradient from the deep to the shallow house .
Material of the City The city is defined by a common language in which endless variations and anomalies are found. This process repeats itself over time and across scale, allowing for the part to encapsulate the complexity of the whole. The city is decomposed into axis of the street and house. Continuity in the street is hidden in a relationship between the simplified and underlying form of the city under contexts.
Transform from Market to Library
Vertical Integrated Market The retail adopt ramps and more open attitude towards the people who do not have particular purpose. Wholesale give people a performance of loading and unloading process to sign its space characteristic. Both of them act as a strategy to uplift people to the third level market unconsciously.
Library as a Corner Performance Original retail’s envelopes are removed and transformed into book shelves, as people circling around to find books become a performance of library to public city legibility. And the vertical shelves create a sense of transparence to connect gallery and coffee horizontally
Transform From Market to Library The designed space is by reading again to occupy market construct into open public space at the corner. Modifications are supposed to both hold change and build the larger context of SoMa.
Retail in City Context
The scale of retail is under the structure of city, with public open to create sense of market. Continuity in the street is hidden in a relationship between the simplified and underlying form of the city under contexts.
Library Performance
The book shelves occupy the retail space of market to create a sense of city transparence. When people coming down from the third level to look for books, as a performance of library, it connects the city with the library by exchanging what happening of the inside and outside.
06 COMPLEMENTARY WORKS
Discovering Ranges and Possibilities
Landscape Project Product Design Packing Design Handmade Gift Box
An amount of work has been done to pursue different ranges in relevant design field. Almost of them are my first try. Some work start with the basic need of people, some work I need to feedback to Chinese classical element, and some work, instead, is the instance inspiration from my mind. Luckily, I got some awards and appreciation from my fr iends. The reason I could do these works owes to the accumulation of five-year architecture learning, also, I believe these practices in relevant fields would subtly influence the logic way I think for architecture design, especially for people, histor y, and environment.
Season Pavilion
Landscape at High-Rise Building Studio Work Instructor: Prof. Wei Zhou Individual Work Fall 2015
Under the background of site, the most desiring idea is to give more area back to the local residents. Thus, I set up various flats according to different behaviors. Some of them is the roof of stores, some provide the shade for people to rest. Inside the building, some becomes a comfort place to sense the change of seasons. The aim of the project is to eliminate the dull and cliche ambience of typical high-rise building.
CAMPUS - BAND - MAP Individual Work Spring 2014 Campus Culture Product Design
Colorful Life Among Cross
The bump is the hint for each joint to form the campus map
The five colour present five main roads of school. Since the similar cross of our campus streets is little identifiable for the new friends and visitors, they usually get lost in school. So I abstracted a series of famous campus building along the five roads and shape them on the running band as the dissemination of school culture. When unfolding these five bands, and connecting to corresponding joint, they could form the map of school for those pedestrians.
PACKING DESIGN Cooperation: Feng Yaxuan Collection Store Fall 2016
First Try The owner of this collection store is one of my best friends, who invites me to design the package for his Chinese cultural jade.
Handmade Gift Box A gift for my best friend Summer 2014
Gift Box with China Sence The inspiration of this gift box comes from the prototype of Chinese old food box, which is used by the ladies to take food for their husbands. Since this gift is given to a friend who is a fan of Chinese classical culture, I looked up to relevant backgrounds, and made this gift box by myself.
