1The present situation of the site 2Historical building 3City center 4A bird's eye view 5Underground space 6The monument

Prologue The site is located in a triangle area in the center of Harbin city in China. The original theater has a long history and its mass is upright and too large, so it does not coordinate well with the surrounding protective historical buildings and does not produce dialogue relationship with the monument within the base. The design takes into consideration of how the building can respond to the surrounding protective buildings and thus produces building shape. Colorful cultural activities of citizens such as yangko are abundant in Harbin, however, the traditional theater, as the carrier of high art, seems to be disjointed with the citizen culture. Therefore, the design puts forward the concept of city stage and expects to integrate the city space into the traditional theater to provide citizens with place of performance, so as to form performance space with different degrees of opening and form entertainment synthesis of the city. Disharmonious The huge size of the existing building is not harmonious with the surrounding, and it is very abrupt in the triangle site.

View

Sink Given that the stage of the theater must be in a certain height, the building should sink to reduce its size.

Incision The indoor space is sliced into cross-shaped passages for connecting with people in different directions.

Add Functions The building is not only used as a theatre but also as a cinema and a place for cultural business.

City Parlour Stray singers and folk artists can perform on the cross-shaped passages which are the most active parts of the building.

View

Fuzzy Boundary The side of the building facing the monument should be pressed downward to fuzzy the boundaries between the building and the site.

Different Flowlines There will be two flowlines of crowds on the Monument Square. One is going into the building, the other is going to the roof of the building.

City Stage The roof of the building and the square form an open space for watching performances just like a city stage.

Research :The Voices of People

It’s too boring to live in the same building all day long .The space is really monotonous.

I often have to walk a long distance to buy something or have a meal. It will be OK if I can solve the problems in the residential area.

I live here for one year and hardly know my neighbors, for I can meet them only in the elevator every day.

Prologue The theme for this design is social building. The high density of social building in China has resulted in a certain degree of declination in the quality of living. It is designed to find ways to enhance the quality of living in the high density conditions. Although the original buildings built in 1950s in the site cannot meet people's needs, the comfortable, quiet atmosphere created by the original enclosed buildings is still worth preserving. The design is to consider the original courtyard culture of the site and the prospects for the development of the district, aiming to inherit the memory about the space in the original courtyard and to create three-dimensional courtyards in the limited space. Meanwhile, the vitality of the area is to be activated by opening it to the cities. More dwelling-size types are to be created to meet the needs of different groups of people by studying the living space and modular construction.

How to Generate The basic plane layout of the site is produced according to the above discussion on how to achieve balance between the commercial function and living function, the site is imbed into the south faced slab type apartment building and the arrangements are staggered to get more sunlight, and dotted high buildings are interspersed to improve the plot ratio, so that the topic of social community buildings can be met.

Skip Floor Apartment Building There won ‘t be luxurious big garden because of the specialty of social building , but we can use the building itself to form stereoscopic courtyards. The traffic space is essential space where we meet each other everyday,is there any possibilities to use the traffic space to create a shared space ?
