HALL What is a hall? What are the parameters constructing a hall? Can we reduce a hall to the bare minimum and distill its essence? How is the hall related to Martha Rosler and her artistic position? How is the hall related to the criticisms on museums? The essence of the hall is collectivity. It’s inherently rejecting subdivision and enclosure. If we are to settle on three words to describe a hall, my answer would be social, massive, and fluidity. In this case, a hall would align well with Martha Rolser’s artistic ideology. The artist dedicated her profound vision to social, political and community polemics. Her subjects range from Vietnam war, feminism, domestic roles to globalization. A hall for Martha Rosler would be a microcosm where subjects in life are intensified and juxtaposed. It’s an igniter which elicits criticism on our banal and ordinary life. The hall should be not so different from the world outside, but just a little better protected, just a little bit.

SOUTHBANK BY BEULAH Melbourne is renowned for its liveability, overlaying a geographically perfect location with beautiful surroundings and a moderate climate. The city itself is set up on Hoddle’s grid, similar to American cities but it also has small-scale laneways and parks similar to some of the most well-known European cities. At first glance – it has the best of all worlds. However, there are also downsides to its planning. Melbourne is very car dependent; there are comparatively few people that live in the city and thus bears some of the most extended urban sprawl in the world. It is a city of contrast.

Boston Musical Center 2016 Fall Harvard GSD Core III Professor Oana Stanescu
Boston Musical Center is a multifunctional performance facility shared by the Berklee Music College, the Boston Conservatory, and the Boston Lyric Opera. It contains a variety of programs including concert halls, rehearsal rooms, classrooms, offices, and residential halls. Located at the crossing of two urban arteries, the center will serve as the icon of downtown Boston as well as the new cultural center. Reflecting on its critical role in the urban context, the proposal aims to design a transparent and democratic building for the public. The building is composed of slanted floor slabs with open plans that minimize the visual barriers between the building and the city. The playful floor slabs functions as a performing stage revealing the interior activities to the streets. Light wells and vertical circulations are inserted into the floor slabs to promote internal connections. In all, it’s a carefully structured building that’s transparent and engaging.

Millenial Collective Housing: Alone Together
“By challenging the conventional configuration of sharable space - bathroom, living room, kitchen, people, even strangers can share space comfortably. Each house could be understood as a microcosm where everyone could live alone together.
Sharing economy is ubiquitous in our daily life; however, it is in fact a misnomer. Based on the Harvard Business Review on Jan 2015, sharing is more about economical exchange, rather than social or value sharing. To promote the benefit of economical exchange, this design scheme demonstrates the reinvention of domestic space: by challenging the conventional configuration of sharable space, people, even strangers, can share space comfortably. Each house could be understood as a microcosm where everyone could live alone together.

Living... on a slope
Conventional living room encourages gathering which is difficult to achieve nowadays, as the thriving of streaming service, such as Netflix, and the multiplicity of viewing options. At Tate Modern and Siena Piazza, loose spacial configuration and inclining slope allow different forms of activities.

CORNELL B.ARCH EXERCISES Whaling Station
2015 Spring Cornell B.Arch Studio | Professor Jim Williamson, Lorena del Rio By analyzing the programs of whaling station, a prototype resembling the production of whale blubber is distilled. The procedures include dragging up whales along the slip way, slaughtering them in the flensing area, extracting oil in cookeries and eventually via pipe systems that transport the oil to storage tanks. The prototype abstracts the production by focusing on linearity of the blubber flow and the concept of filtration during the process.
