The lost port of Beirut

Reconstruction of the Port of Beirut - Creation of a square for people in mourning

Design Note:The day of 4 August 2020 is a day that will never be forgotten by the people of Beirut, who experienced one of the largest explosions in the world, apart from the nuclear explosion, in which countless people were killed and injured. The design aims to restore the harbour and turn it into a memorial square, through a spatial narrative perspective, creating a change of atmosphere through the space, preserving parts of the ruins and some special monuments to make people feel the grief of the accident.

People depend on the port for their livelihood, and the port is not only economically dependent, but also carries people's memories.

The aftermath of this accident was financially and mentally traumatic.

Memorial Plaza Design Strategy

The design hopes to preserve and transform the ruins of the harbour so that the memory of this tragic event will not be forgotten. Through the memorial square, the design hopes to express the feelings of the victims for the world and their home, and to let the living know the importance of life.

Linear landscape blocks

The square expresses the emotional impact of the landscape on people through twelve nodes. People follow the river, exploring its end step by step, as the topography and density of the vegetation affects them, their emotions change from gradually repressed to cathartic as they enter the central square, people reminisce under the Möbius ring and watch the river flow into the sea, a kind of mourning for those who have passed away. The Möbius Ring represents eternal love, where love, family and friendship find their expression.

People saw the wreckage of the ship next to the starting square and felt the danger of the explosion. The lake in the central square contains the remains of the warehouse that was the source of the explosion. The silent warehouses once again illustrate the grief caused by the accident. The remains of the warehouse have been restored and turned into factory garden. The plant gardens are lush and full of plants that hide the ruins and give people a spirit of 'regeneration'. The observation deck offers view of the surrounding area and one can look back and see the Moebius Monument. Container wreckage converted into a resting space. When people walk out of the square and see the busy view of the other half of the harbour next to them, it seems like two worlds. One understands that life goes on. As the terrain around the corridor increases in height and the vegetation becomes more dense, the feeling of oppression becomes heavier. Rebirth of the Garden

The design of the square was to give a sense of the damage caused by the explosion, and to remember the sorrowful victims in the central square with the Möbius monument, but then the 'rebirth' phase was to show that life is important, but that those who have died do not want those who loved them to grieve so much that their lives are affected. They may have found another way to be reborn and remain in this world, loving those they care about for eternity.

Every year on the 4th of August, the Lebanese National Day of Sacrifice, people hold the lanterns in their hands and put them into the river, watching the stars gradually float into the sea.

"Taming" the palm tree

Ecological restoration design for the destruction of the environment by palm trees.

Design Note : The design explores the environmental damage caused by the development of palm cultivation in the context of palm cultivation in Indonesia and the indispensability of palm to the economic development of the local people. The design therefore seeks to find a balance between the development of palm cultivation and the reduction of environmental damage, starting from the perspective of carbon emissions and soil erosion, and using inter-planting design of palm trees, sequoia fast-growing forests and legume belts to mitigate environmental damage, and to achieve palm reduction without reducing production by improving the quality of the environment.

More than 43 million hectares of forest have been lost between 2004 and 2017, an area the size of Morocco's national territory.

THE FOREST OF THE FUTURE

The forest is balanced, with palm groves interspersed with native plants, space for animals to call home becomes plentiful, species diversity increases, pests and diseases are minimal and soil erosion is minimal. People travel through the corridors transporting palm fruits without disturbing the animals. The forest becomes moist and the temperature is reduced to a suitable level.

WALK AMONG THE ICE

Icelandic tourist supply station design

Design Note:Iceland is a famous tourist destination, but the majority of its visitors are on the Icelandic Ring Road 1. The Icelandic hinterland has more spectacular scenery, while the roads through the hinterland are rarely reached. The design aims to solve the problem of the hinterland roads being blocked by glacially melted rivers in summer by building small bridges, and to promote the green development of tourism in Iceland by building a series of geothermal energy transfer stations on the hinterland roads for tourists' energy and living supplies, and by providing a drone replacement service to compensate for the limited viewing angle of tourists.

If you want to go deep into the hinterland of Iceland and explore the special scenery of the two glaciers, you have to cross Iceland's No. 2 Highway. This road follows the geothermal zone and has good geothermal resources.

Iceland is a country with rich geological resources and beautiful scenery. As Iceland's tourism industry gradually replaced other industries and became the main economic pillar of Iceland, it also brought many problems. In fact, the vast majority of Icelandic tourists are on the Iceland ring road belt, but only a few people go to the more magnificent scenery Iceland hinterland.

Design strategy

Combined with the geological conditions, the height of the recharge station is raised to provide a viewing platform and the rich geothermal energy resources around the road are used for geothermal power generation.

Morphological evolution Structure splitting

The World Tree symbolizes the origin and replenishment of life, the giant eagle in the crown controls the weather, the branches glisten at the top of the tree, and the plants beneath the roots are food for the giant deer. The design requirements are very similar to the world tree concept. Iceland, known as the "End of the world", is a beautiful place that doesn't look like the real world. The idea is to place "world trees" along less touristy routes inside Iceland to provide energy and supplies to passing travellers, as well as drones for observation and climate detection. As such, the design will follow the shape of the World Tree, symbolising the location of Iceland's "World Tree" at the "end of the World", with beacons at the top of the station directing visitors and those approaching the station, like deer seeing the light at the top of the tree running towards the World Tree, replenishing energy at the foot of the station.

At road junctions cut off by rivers, bridges are built and transit stations are added to give people the right direction of travel.

The placement of the transit station next to the lake gives people a good view and living experience without affecting the environment.

The placement of a staging area next to the mountain range, at a height that allows for distant views of the interior of the mountain range, compensates for the limited viewing angle that people cannot access due to policy restrictions.

13 We chose to use lichen plants native to Iceland to change the color of the facade and provide an environment for lichen plants to grow naturally all over the surface.

Walk among the ice

In order to develop a tourist route in the hinterland of Iceland, this design starts from the problem of viewing angle and life supply. A series of drone replacement points are used to provide a full-service drone tour service. There are structures along the way to provide energy supply and living space. The higher viewing platform also brings people a different travel experience.

At the same time, many commercial Spaces are added to meet the living needs of the surrounding population.
