01 8.12 |津门殇 Personal Urban Design Winter 2016 On 8.12.2015 Tianjin was devastated by a catastrophic chemical explosion which destroyed both people and property. This event exacerbated existing issues related to the absence of adequate consumer centric infrastructure, inefficient space utilization, and being a pedestrian nightmare. - Crossing the road is no longer "mission impossible", thanks to space reallocation, street surface reduction, and skywalk addition - Instead of covering over the devastation a sunken memorial was created - A stream flows throughout the site serving as a lifeblood for the entire design and extending the essence of the renewal - Visitors migrate freely to and from various public and private mini-plazas via lanes and alleys as they enjoy unobstructed visual space due to low profile urban design - Consumer centric area addresses the commercial, dinning, entertainment, and hospitality needs of visitors - Traditional Chinese elements meld with multi-national design characteristics to create a low profile morphology 8.12 is the transformation of devastation and inefficiency into renewal and innovation.

01 Pro-Pedestrian After exiting the HSL station, crossing the road is no longer "mission impossible", thanks to space reallocation, street surface reduction, and skywalk addition.

02 Memorialize and Renew The massive blast left a huge crater. Instead of covering over the devastation a sunken memorial was created. A 9m wide stream flows throughout the site serving as a lifeblood for the entire design and extending the essence of the renewal.

03 Public Space Visitors migrate freely to and from various public and private mini-plazas via lanes and alleys as they enjoy unobstructed visual space due to low profile urban design.

04 Low Profile Morphology Consumer centric area addresses the commercial, dinning, entertainment, and hospitality needs of visitors. Traditional Chinese elements meld with multi-national design characteristics to create a low profile morphology.

02 JIANHUAN EXPANSION | 新建环 Sichuan University Graduation Design Professor: Guozhen Chou Spring 2016 Four schools (Architecture,Civil Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, and Environmental Science) make for one increasingly overcrowded Jianhuan, facility expansion is unavoidable. - The design of the two educational buildings meet the specific requirements inherent to Chinese education ideology - Otherwise independent facilities are united by a dynamic multi-use central area creating an organic whole optimized for interdisciplinary collaboration - Unique "U" floor plan, solar blocking surface and rooftop landscaping provide enhanced environmental efficiency - Roof to sub-grade ventilation system provides bright and fresh studio space - 7.2 meter ceilings partnered with interior and exterior partial walls allow for accommodation of future capacity requirements (data indicates it will double in ten years) without compromising design integrity The Jianhuan expansion herein is an expression of my gratitude for the 3.5 years of academic training obtained at Sichuan University. The 2 months of investigative research (personal door-to-door and digital polling of the student body, school officials as well as professors) proceeded 3 months of hands on design work.

03 400 | 长桥 Sichuan University Core Studio Professor: Guozhen Chou Autumn 2013 Sichuan University's notorious 400 meter bridge is a classic case of Le Corbusier's “Radiant City” theory by creating a vast gap between critically dependent spaces. - Custom canopies, dedicated routes, and an integrated plaza transform a trip on the 400 from suffering to Shangri-la - Custom canopies are tailor fit to each location ensuring functionality, stability and aesthetics - A dedicated route resolves glaring transportation safety issues without sacrificing cyclists convenience by means of carefully located exits - An integrated plaza serves as a central oasis promoting social interactions, economic return, and provides lookouts for picture perfect moments - Rooftop solar panels make a positive environmental impact by serving as a supplemental power source Formally crossing the 400 was nothing more than a necessary evil. Following these architectural enhancements a trip across the bridge will become a personal pleasure.

04 A.T.C. | 建筑师训练场 Personal Architecture Design Summer 2016 NASA astronaut candidates have the Johnson Space Center, architects will have the A.T.C. (Architect Training Center). - A.T.C. provides professionals and the public an open studio along with a fabrication lab. - Freedom from the usual programs allows for the creation of a revolutionary training focused "Pantheon" - 3 galleries: Gallery of Space, Gallery of Light and Gallery of Landscape - By unlocking the academic value of VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) typical limitations related to time, space, and budget are overcome This A.T.C. is a prototype suitable for global reproduction.
