As a junior architect, I joined in the concept design, schematic design, and detail design of this project, and met with our client and contractor over and over again. The team discussed the concept together at the beginning, and eventually we used my proposal. It is very excited to see it built out with good quality and win the award in the end.

The architecture of the pilgrimage operates at multiple scales. The largest scale (L) is the welcome center at the beginning of the pilgrimage which is settled on the lake bank and overlays one of the experiment locations along the loop. The welcome center is designed to be a multi-functional place for diverse activities, for example, exhibition, restaurants, auditorium, etc. This is followed by medium-scale structures which house the 12 particle colliders along the FCC with small exhibition spaces, and the small-scale structures which act as hiking destinations and house the retired experiments. Last but not the least, extra small structures act as trail makers located along the trails between the 12 colliders and the hiking destinations.

The overarching concept of the LivingLine proposal combines characteristics at five different levels- Urban level, Community level, Mechanical level, Neighborhood level and the Individual unit level. It is trying to create an argument for a situation of an urban hybrid where the challenge is to not only create semi-private spaces for the residents but also allow for a public access to the waterfront. The site is located at the intersection of Jefferson Ave and Grand Blvd, on the east end of River town, Detroit which is a gateway to the island- Belle Isle. Understanding the site context and trying to explore the true potentials of a riverfront site, it forms seven dynamic residential strips that are loosely connected to each other. These consist of 313 housing units and 11 typologies with mixed used functions. The strips carve within themselves a hierarchy of private and public spaces for the residents as well as the neighboring community. The promenade with its central position serves as a transition zone between the residential complex on the east and the right of way on the west which has the major retail and commercial activities thus allowing for public interaction.

The project has 313 housing units in total, including 15% SRO (Single Room Occupancy), 20% studio, 25% one-bedroom unit, 25% two-bedroom unit and 15% three-bedroom unit, as well extra 25% service apartments. Each unit is composed by a longer living-kitchen module and several bedroom modules, except SROs and studios. The composition of different units generate a dynamic south elevation and a connected volume.

While the First Five-Year Project was finished in the early years of new P.R.China, the industrialization started in Hefei. At the same time, China marched into the period of Great Leap Forward movement. 1958 After the decision of the Reform and Openingup Policy and the end of the Great Cultural Revolution, China’s economy started to grow rapidly and the saw an immigrant rush in the cities. Since then, urban started to expand and renovate again. However, the villages in the city were almost left behind. 1987

Chaohu city has been merged into Hefei territory, which would catalyze the expansion process of the city. The urban population is continually increasing while the city territory has almost doubled. With it, more urban villages shall be included in the city in the future. 2015

05 THE UNFINISHED COMMUNITY

Administrative management and policy can hardly be reached the village, which gives an opportunity for illegal buildings and street stalls to survive. “Messy with beauty”, as Wang Shu comments, “It is an architectural language that mastered by ordinary people, the majority.” But on the other hand, as many self-organized districts in the history, urban village usually has serious problems of high density, sanitation, and fire risk. The new community is still a complex giant system just like the village. Its social service can provide all kinds of low-price necessaries which meet the basic living consumption of its residents.

Limited options have its potential to result in numerous compositions. The residents can customize the evaluation of their own apartments through the combination system, like the Windows game "Making Cupcake". Industrialized the process and introduce the prefabrication technology can raise the efficiency and reduce the cost. But it is still a bottom-up designed system which not only ensures the diversity of "chaos", but also avoids the potential security risks of "chaos".

The diversity in population‘s cultural background, experience, living tradition, and aesthetic value will be reflected in the evaluation through the customize system. As long as people move in and out, the facades of the building and spaces shall be always in changing. So, at some point, it can be viewed as a dynamic design process which always under construction, rather than a result. Since the construction process shall never have an end, it becomes an unfinished community. The whole community is able to provide accommodation for 7,000 to 10,000 people, most are immigrants. Their consumption demands can effectively stimulate the commercial space in the surrounding areas. The new community also has a very different architecture style with the neighbors. It also has a potential to become a unique landmark of the whole city.

For architectural design, the most attractive aspect for the urban village is that the locals can actually design their own place. It is based on a series of informal social contracts - a result of bargaining, negotiation, and compromise between neighbors. In another perspective of view, its diversity origins from its chaos, a condition that stands on the brink of ‘losing control’. Therefore, the problems like high density, sanitation, and fire risk can always be found in urban villages, like a land of the anarchy of production. The point is, a system needs to be established to keep chaos at bay, to standardize the chaos but still preserve the ecology of diversity.

Intersection Conclusion

In order to protect private property and prevent the spread of fire, architecture facade here barely has no big window towards the outside. There are only a few tiny windows can be found on the high wall, only for necessary light and fresh air. Meanwhile, to make maximize private land use, the public space - street - usually appears as narrow as crack. These cracks define the form of buildings, while intersections are the nodes which define the crack. The intersections in Hong Cun are mainly T type. Native people firmly believe in Fengshui - a naive materialism theory about energy and spirit in traditional culture - that the roads to the village are similar to energy vessels to the human body, and intersections are much like acupuncture points. Therefore, roads and intersections are the top significant thing of the village fabric. T type intersections are favorable for the circulation of "energy" which they called Qi. The cross-like intersections could cause the conflict of Qi which will lead a bad luck or disaster to the neighbors. So they tried their best to avoid those cross-type intersections while they masterplanned the village. If the cross was inevitable in some cases, they would be transformed the intersection to a windmill-type.

Hong Cun is an ancient village in Anhui Province with over six hundred years history and has been included on the world heritage list. It also is known for the film scene of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. During its long history, the local architecture has developed out its own unique type - be known as Anhui Style - to adapt the environment and culture. This is a project of critical regionalism. Based on a study from the whole village structure to the single architectural language, the basic elements will be extracted through a deconstruction method. By reinterpreting and reconstructing the elements into the modern architectural language, the new gallery for Hun Cun will be formed and shaped. It will become a new interpretation of ‘Anhui style’ which stands for the past, the present, and the future of the village.

In 1960’s, the population in Paris had risen to eleven million. However, by lacking infrastructures and social housing, labor population started to move out of Paris, also, the number of new married couples begun to fall. In 1963, almost one century after Haussmann’s plan, the government held the second round renovation project which focused on traffic system for automobiles and social housing programs for working class. As a giant complex system, the central city in expanding has always been more and more complicated and chaotic. For architecture, new types come out every day and occupy every affordable space in the city unsystematically and fragmentary. Sometimes, finding a way to integrate new inventions into the urban networks

and combine with other existing functions is obviously better than occupying those isolated negative urban spaces. The purpose of the combination is to build up a new ecology with a new urban lifestyle, in which habitation, production, and consumption will be appropriately rearranged. Food plays a very important role in French culture, having food is not only a way to enjoy cooking art, but also an act of socialization. This project will dig into the sociability in French food culture, and use it as a bridge to build up the connection between immigrants and city. The project shall mainly include four functions: housing, farm, market, and restaurant.

The building site for this project is in the 13th region of Paris, with a metro station and its neighbor. Also, inside the site locates Albert Tower which is a residential building with 50 years of age and a home for hundreds of citizens. Immigrants, of course, need places to settle down, meanwhile, fully engaging into the city is also necessary. A new group coming in might break the old relationship between the existing neighborhoods. Even inside the immigrant group, the differences between the various cultural backgrounds might cause isolation as well. Since food could be the key to break the ice, then communication should not only take place in the restaurant, but also in the spaces where people produce, process, or trade food. Therefore, a complex which indicates to stimulate communication have to include all aspects of the food industry and open to both immigrants and local residents. So, except the functions like habitation, community service, and farm, a place for trading - a market hall - would be necessary at the beginning. Then a new plaza will cover the sunken railway area and cap the hole in the site and becomes the container of public activities. “Food carriage” will be added on the train, together they shall become the underground moving restaurant. As long as the agricultural complex can fully take the advantages of the metro system, it will be closely linked with the whole city. If the number of agricultural complexes keeps increasing, it will become a brand new network system of the city. Perhaps in the nearly future, farming no longer need to stay away from the downtown, and immigrants no longer need to stand alone. Food has always been one of the most fundamental demands for the living. For people coming from the various cultural background, their diet cultures might be very diversified as well. However, except the regionalism factors, people’s attitude to food can be hardly influenced by discrimination or political ideology. Surely, it can always be the most useful method to bridge the gap caused by traditions and languages. The complicated background of immigrant groups might bring division and isolation, but it also brings the diversity of food cultures. In this project, the vertical farm is able to provide food for the immigrants with the help of high-density soilless culture. The redundant products will be sent to the market and metro for trading. So the community is not only self-sufficient but also productive. With the metro network, the complex is able to service the whole city on a large scale.


Some public spaces like meetingroom and library will be inserted into the habitation building as a place for socialization. The first floor of the habitation is a public space where holds the social programs like lecture, laundry, nursery, clinic, theater, retail, and fitness.

By using the high-density soilless culture technology, the farm will only use LED light to maintain the most efficient growth rate of crops and vegetables. Both immigrants and locals can participate in the plant and harvest process. The agriculture products can be processed and packed in the back workshop.

The train carriage can be transformed into a moving restaurant with the supports from both vertical farm and metro system. With metro networks, the complex is able to service the city and citizens in an urban scale and create jobs for the new immigrants. And the moving communicating spaces can help to build a harmonious relationship between locals and immigrants.

The plaza is an open space for the site and neighbors. An open theater can provide a platform for the public shows and street arts.


Surround the plaza, the strategies are around how to build up the linkage between all those existing buildings and new programs, and makes them work in one integrated system. The final work is a combination of four strategies
