PoughkeepsieGo

Urban Design Studio II Columbia University Collaborators: Paul Xiaopu Wang, Zhen Quan, Grace N. Ng Fall 2016

The free school meal program in Poughkeepsie City is failing. Previous initiatives to supply healthy food to students have gone down the chute because students were simply not interested. We’re working on version 2.0 by adding on a live gaming curriculum about the food cycle, starting from school cafeterias and expanding beyond that with urban foodscape pathways. PoughkeepsieGo! is the starting point of a food culture revolution that engages students to get to know what’s on their plate.

Compared to surrounding school districts, poughkeepsie students are significantly underprivileged. Only Poughkeepsie meets the poverty threshold for CEP (Community Elegibility Provision), a universal free meal program. It is also the district with the highest obesity rates.

The gamescape is structured around bringing different schools within Poughkeepsie City School District together; by sharing a common learning experience and a centralized kitchen. It is a strategy of localization in order to make efficient economies of food production and consumption. As children move through the K-12 public school system, they study the entire food cycle and participate in the processes within.

Reviving Kolkata’s Creek Economy

Urban Design Studio III Columbia University Collaborators: Zichang Yan, Yan Pang, Lingshu Huang Spring 2017

We counter a global-oriented riverfront development approach to Kolkata’s future with a local-oriented scheme that revives the city’s historical creeks. Unlike a riverfront approach, which brings development to the river’s edge, our proposal extends development deep into the city via creeks, catalyzing and stimulating what we call a creek economy. This is an economy that has declined, or rather reduced to a lesser status with the rise of the river economy promoted during colonial times. It is a decline that has followed the disappearance of creeks, reduced to gutters and drains.

Creeks are a way of life in the Bengal Delta. They support the Mangrove ecology of the Sundarbans and the agricultural and craft economy of villages and towns.

Payradanga Town Bridge

In this project, we revive a creek economy in the vicinity of Kolkata’s Howrah Station. During the 1800s the area thrived as an industrial district, capitalizing at the time on surrounding rail and port infrastructures. Before this time, this area was typically agricultural, organized along creeks that dominate the lower elevations of this deltaic landscape. Today, the port has moved further down the Hooghly River, but the rail station remains the primary entrance to the city, bringing pilgrims from all over the country to bathe in the river, which is venerated as Mother Ganga and to worship in temples along its bank. Industry has given way to crafts such as idol making, which uses clay, bamboo, hay and other local materials to make deities for the various festivals celebrated through out the year. The railway station has also spurned the growth of various wholesale markets such as the fish, vegetable and leaf markets. Together the craft industry and market’s have shaped an area of Kolkata that absorbs migrant workers, many of them farmers yet offers little towards their quality of life. Farmers and pilgrims alike, come from rural areas to supply the city with daily labor or for religious celebrations. With their families, they sleep in the streets and live along the river. Our project provides these people with shelter and opportunities that addresses their safety, health, livelihood and education.

The Lost and Found of Creeks A waternism system consists of creeks existed besides the Hooghly River until 1857. It supplied water and transpotation for the industries that were introduced by the British East India .... As the decline of heavy industry coupled with city expansion, the creeks had been reclaimed. The Kolkata Port Trust infilled the western riverbank adjacent south of Howrah Station in 1943, reshaping the waterfront that was owned by itself. While the port moving out of the city, development in the area has stagnated, leaving no trace of a once vibrant urban fabric. Reconstrcting the creeks promises to bring an interesting trajectory of improvement to this port land.

Coexist Community

Final Thesis Studio Shenzhen University Collaborators: Han Wei Spring 2015

Urban-village is urban phenomenon particularly exists in Shenzhen. However, driven by tremendous interests, developers were tearing the urban-villages down one after the other, built up the whole new high buildings and large mansions on ruins. Original context, cultures and residents can not longer been found. In this program, we not only guarantee the interests of the developers, but also keep the residence for the low-income immigrants; not only built up the prosperities of the new mansions but also remain the old memories of the village. A coexist community, are keeping more elements exist on this very land.

Baishizhou is the biggest urban-village in Shenzhen, with a fantastic location and high potential of land value. But now it has fallen into big troubles, high density, high population, poor sanitation, lack of basic facilities. All of these problems block its way developing to be a comfortable and attractive community. Urban Village Spacial Development

At the beginning, villagers only bulit the house for their own familys. Many places used to be parks or farming fields. It is a very comfortable community.

As the immigrant grew quickly, housing need grew simultaneously. Meanwhile under the pressure coming from the government, some villagers try to bulid house excess the limitation, seeking for more benefits.

In the same situation with the second one, more and more villagers joined the illegal buliding action looking for more rental, which had become the main income for the villager.

When the government showed its determination, almost all the villager believed that this is the last chance. Therefore, the biggest illegal buliding action happened.

Deconstruction of Baishizhou

According to our research, some advantages of Baisizhou, such as the spacial formation, active community, and the location, can be used to achieve the goal of overall development. To allocate the benefits of city renewal reasonably to each participants is one of our concerns, which is helpful to build the ‘coexist community’, carrying more activities and meeting various needs of the modern live.

Old Building Renewal Activated the Old Building, Conserved Old Texture, Filled with New Fuctions

1

These three elements, the old houses, an old street and a structure, are both memorable and interesting, they could be used to represent the old Baishizhou. By preserving their spacial formation, texture and others advantages, they are able to bring the original feeling to the visitors. Given the new functions, they are able to meet the needs of modern live. As the LOFT, hostorical museum and community center, they could again play the significant roles in the community.

New Building Construction Benefit Balance Concerning, Tree Main Target: Developers, Original Villagers, Low Income Immigrants In order to reach the beneficial balance between this three participants, we try to deal with it by different functional spaces. For developers, they can use the mall, the office buildings and the commercial apartments to get the profits. For immigrants, the low rental apartments can offer them an affordable house at the beginning. For local villagers, the vertical villages can not only provide them with comfortable houses, but also the rental of these houses can be the income.

Linear Park

Because our site currently lacks basic greening, the suitable greening space is one of the most significant parts of our planning. Instead of the traditional greening pieces, if a greening axis cuts from north to south through our long shape site connecting all the dots and making them one, that will be a nice place for the residents. Therefore we decide to stretch it out along the site itself, to create a linear continual greening pedestrian park to enlarge the range of its service. Along the axis there are a primary school, a kindergarten, and the sports facilities which can also open to public on weekends.

Value Factory Academy Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism / Architecture Collaborators: Yinghua Chen, Guangwei Xu January 2014

The project reviews this abandoned factory at urban border with development history of Shenzhen as the background. We design a brand new community for the border men that just arrived in Shenzhen. The community will attach itself to a growing mega-structure.

45

Industry Upgrading

Since 2003, Shenzhen have practiced the culture supporting development strategy. Shenzhen is transforming from manufacturing industry to culture creating. As the experiment field in early Economic Reform, the Guangdong Float Glass Factory can be the optimized location for the collective life community for the culture industry after 2013 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism Architecture, helping Shenzhen transforms from “Made in Shenzhen” to “Create in Shenzhen”.To diminish the gap of rich and poor, the Guangdong Float Glass Factory will be the new people’s commune of collective life, getting rid of the disturb of capitalization and commercialization helping the border men, the chineses from rural and the foreigners from overseas, chasing their dreams at the urban border.

Shekou, the southest part of Shenzhen, had more and more foreigners coming and increase 20% per year. Shekou is now an international area and the best choice for foreigners come to China.

From Rural to Urban Doug Saunders visited lots of edges of the city in the world and he wrote in his book Arrival City: "What I found in these places were people who had been born in villages, who had their minds and ambitions fixed on the symbolic center of the city, and who were engaged in a struggle of monumental scope to find a basic and lasting berth in the city for their children." As an urban border, the Guangdong can be an arrival city for the people from rural. The community will provide low cost lives for them while they will be preparing for find a place in the center of the city. value class

Expo Park

Architecture Studio Politecnico di Milano

Fall 2014

This project is to reconstruct the skeleton of the abandoned San Critoforo Railway Station of Aldo Rossi. With the altar to worship the original skeleton, I designed the surrounding site to build the negative space into an extraordinary Expo Park in the suburban of Milan.

53

Eco-Monster

Unfinished and Abandoned Structured

Around the skeleton, there is a waste land that cannot be interrelated with the urban context of Milan. Such abandoned building is regarded eco-monster in Italian media. The negative space, via a geometric processing, has been endowed functions to form its own context, thus to “domesticate“ the eco-monster which are normally demolished with dynamite.

This is the unfinished structure of a railway station designed by Aldo Rossi and Gianni Braghieri as an extension of the San Cristoforo goods yard in Milan, on the Naviglio Grand Canal, almost with Corsico. It has lain disyused for more than twenty years.

Concept This abandoned structure has been left over for over 20 years. Out of the respect to Aldo Rossi, I reserved the skeleton intact, which is the Italian’s notion on historic presercation, only adding an altar base in the surrounding. The altar was to worhship the 20-year-old historic site as well as an excavation site, while manifesting an Italian sur-realism.

Narratives of the Building Buildings are merely three dimensional objects, but if time added to them, can generate fourth dimensional narratives. Old buildings have their own narratives, and can be further set off by adding new buildings with new connotations. The complete and one-way circulation guide visitors and the flow of Naviglio Grande to involve in and create new narratives. Every drop of water accomplished its commission by flowing into canal along different channels, and every visitor read the story of the building through the varied functions. The two matched together to witness the elapse of time, passing through the old and the new.

Hell’s Garden

Urban Design Studio I Columbia University Collaborators: Ahmed Jawdat, Dongfang Pang, Ge Zhao Summer 2016

Current development pressures in Midtown Manhattan are further exacerbating the lack of biodiversity, the heat island effect and storm water run-off problem. At the same time, the Clinton special zoning has preserved the low-rise tenements in the Hell’s Kitchen in contrast with the surrounding high-rise development. We see the opportunity to use the vacant space above the neighborhood, to mitigate environmental problems and creating common spaces in the scale of the block.

65

Hell’s Kitchen

Due to the environmental problems caused by Skyscrapers in Midtown skyscrapers should pay extra environmental tax to government. Government incentives the landlords of tenements to install the green roofs with funding and tax rebating. The common green roof space build by landlords in Hell’s Kitchen will mitigate the environmental problems, provide landscape view for the Skyscrapers, and also increase the property value for the tenements.

OMA Reading YZFS Workshop

Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism / Architecture Instructor: Stephan Petermann December 2013

At the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennial OMA created two workshops reexamining this book. The aim of the workshop is to make an interpretation for the Roof section (major carpentry) of Yingzao Fashi. This has done in close collaboration with a number of experts and students of architecture and history. The outcome of the workshop had become a role in the central pavilion exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennial in 2014.
