Site : Silk St, Barbican, London England Area : 2500 m² , 380 metres Course : <Digital architecture> Tutor : Jason Guo, He Xiayun
The Barbican Estate enjoys a long history, living through the ancient Roman era as city walls and World War I and II. It was not until the Greater London Project that was carried out in 1944 that the construction and development of the Barbican block began. According to the British tradition of the city corporation, works should be modified and improved rather than being created from scratch, therefore, the existing art center of Barbican was chosen as the architectural foundation for addition and renewal, which reminds me of Stageless Theater (1990) created by Soviet fantasy architect Brodsky & Utkin, which depicts a mobile opera house installed on a truck, with full seats facing the stage at the rear of the car-urban streets that continue to extend backward, and the changing city acts like a drama in the expansion of time and space.
The center of the Barbican Art Center is used as a theater. I aimed to explore the possibilities of deriving an artistic space above the theater for the audience to present the scene in the play they watch. Therefore, I intended to build into different chapters and design the space in a “dramatic” way to build experimental and dramatic future expectations.
Starting from the artistic value of theater, how does the audience watch and appreciate this form of art created by the artist from the perspective of a third party? The meaning of art is to show people's authentic feelings, the mysterious inner self, and their passions for life, to create a shared feeling. Therefore, art is a spiritual realm created by human beings. This project aims to create a human-centered dramatic by applying the artistic experience of self-perception and self-exploration to architectural space.
At the opening of the Barbican Center, it was regarded by Queen Elizabeth as a miracle of the modern world. In 2003, it was voted as one of the ugliest buildings in London. However, because it represents the status of brutalism in the history of architecture in the UK, it has established itself an irreplaceable cohesion based on architectural characteristics such as scale, the significance of the times, and originality. It was listed as a second-class cultural relic by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) in 2001.
The site is located between a number of distinct areas. The different user groups of these areas present an opportunity for the Barbican to engage with a wider range of interest groups and users.
SITE
The Barbican Art Center not only show the world unlimited possibilities of diversified artistic creation, but also establish itself as a priceless existence for art enthusiasts and professionals. The community center here is not only for residents, but also open to the public. Its theaters, concert halls, and conference rooms are all well-known, making Barbican a multimedia art and cultural center of London. Barbican, undergone years of development and reconstruction, plays a very important role, providing guidance for the future development of the city, and is regarded as an artistic Utopia by many people.is a world of self-indulgence. By connecting separate spaces, I intended to present the various characteristics of the id. It is like applying various desires to each space to become an immersive theater space, and the audience is immersed in the space to find their id.
Purgatory
Hell is the process of ego breaking away from the id and moving towards a new life. It seems to have gone through the seven deadly sins, which are various chaotic and sharp journeys, and these separate spaces are connected by corridors.

According to the definition of the golden section and its curve, different magnification points and rotation points are used to produce various shapes .
GENERATION
According to the definition of the golden ratio and its curve, different magnification points and rotation points are used to produce various shapes .
According to the column grid, diagonal support of cables is added to the architectural structure, and the curved facade is connected with the cable structure on the basis of its own structure.
The column grid structure represents the basis of rationality. After the story is narrated, the perceptual curved surface is added to express the combination of rationality and perceptuality, and the combination of the content ontology of the story and the parametric design method.
CROSS-SECTION VIEW
This project is based on the original theater of the Barbican art center, which extends upward for the transformation and reconstruction of the art space. According to the city corporation, I imagined the future space based on history, built a narrative rational internal space with a column grid structure, and used parametric spatial arrangement and facade design techniques.
Barbican, which has undergone years of development and reconstruction, plays a very important role, providing guidance for the city's future development, and is regarded as an artistic Utopia by many people. High-rise residential buildings, medieval churches, city canals, are gathered around the center of the Barbican. The construction of Barbican only partially followed the original blueprint of urban planning. It brought new ideas and inspiration to the city.
London created the Barbican in the past from the perspective of the future, while designers nowadays hope to rebuild the Barbican for the future from the present perspective. As the city's art center, I hope my reconstruction of Barbican can inspire people to explore art and themselves. By parametrically arranging the space, the project aims to create the Barbican of the future world.
In the 72-story building space, in addition to the three main chapter spaces created by concept and digitalization, the basic functions of office and public are placed. The overall purpose is to set up an art center, mainly for art-related functional spaces, such as immersive theaters and exhibition halls. With the requirement of opening to the public, a public space used primarily by the public has been set up.

‘As an architect, you design for the present, with an awareness of the past, for a future which is esentially unknown.’

As a historical building, Taipei's Xinfucho Market carries memories for the residents of the community and even the entire city. The market is not only a space that allows people to have dialogue and interaction but also allows people to have communication with buildings that buildings are essential when sharing/communicating ideas. The value of architecture is also reflected in the stories and memories between buildings and people. People's perception of architecture also affects the values of architecture, and that is why historical buildings are of great value. The design objective is to rebuild a food market based on people’s stories to trigger their memories of the past and become a precious part of their future memories.
This project focuses on the exploration for the renovation of old buildings, including preliminary investigation, analysis of the building structure, and the design concept regarding how to reconstruct this old market based on people’s memories and stories and apply them in different scenes.

The ice-making room is a new type of demand during the construction process in the past, and it is also the only market space that remains so far. The owner completes the ice-making process in this small ice-making room and delivers them at different times.
In the original small ice room, Tang Jian Aijiao spent more than 30 years of ice making in a single room alone. The designer considers to fully display the ice making process, so that tourists or more people can know how the most commonly used ice chambers on the market are made. At the same time, an ice chamber store has been added to sell ice products, starting from the raw material process. To the finished product, tourists or citizens can watch and experience it.
I have lived here for more than 30 years!
The ice making process is separated by a steel structure, and the veranda is connected with the ice fruit room to construct an interactive space.
As the only existing market space, the ice making room uses the original ice making room as a memory background to enlarge the ice making process and increase the selling space of ice processed products.
The original building material is a brickconcrete structure, and the added space is mostly a structural system of steel and wood.
The ice-making chamber transports the crushed ice to the ice-fruit chamber via rails to make thwarted ice and branch ice Tang Jian AijiaoThe pork stall in Xinfu Market has witnessed the market’s development from establishment to prosperity and finally to decline. At the same time, in this small stall, the stall owner will have different activities throughout the day, day after day.
Achai Ma’s family lived from selling pork at a pork stall since she was a child, so she lived in the vegetable market area since she was a child, and she knew and experienced a lot about the stories that happened in the vegetable market. After the bombing, the whole city was gray. As a result, the lives of Ah Chai Mu's family were also in trouble, and they increased their income by making processed meat products. By studying the timeline of their past life in the vegetable market, as well as the different types of vegetable market stalls, the market space and stalls are upgraded, and the expectation is a vegetable market with different scenes at different times.
I've been through a lot of stories in this market.
The addition to the original building not only puts an activity space on the original floor height, but also creates a space that can introduce light through staggered floors.
In addition to the original buying and selling activities, the market has also placed some interactive activities and spaces.
The original floor height was high, and in order to make use of the upper space, a new activity space was placed, which facilitated more intersections in the market and played its role as a medium.
Stalls are the most important element of the market and the medium through which people interact.Zheng Yalin
The tea table shop is not only in the market, it is the memories of the people in this area. He recorded the traditional habits of the scapular people of morning tea and evening wine. It is also a place where stories often occur in the memories of citizens living around the market.
In the original history of the tea table shop, there were scenes with different functions in different time lines. Morning tea and evening wine have always been the habit of Wanhua people, but the original tea table shop used two doors in the same space to separate the use at different times.
The design hopes to place the book bar and the bar in two spaces with a large difference in movement and static, so as to transition between the two spaces with a larger time difference, so that this space can be effectively used in 24 hours.
This is the habit of everyone in Ximending.
The tea house, which is open during the day, adds a library space on the second floor.
Through the staggered floors of the floor, the interlacing of the first and half floors can create a visual connection.
The noodle stall that only opens in the evening, because of the lifestyle of morning tea and late wine, has added a tavern on the second floor.
The red brick exterior wall is the most primitive skin, using arc-shaped elements, which are applied to the two newly added spaces to increase the richness of the space.
In the process of renovation, Xinfu Market pays more attention to restoring the materials and colors used in the old building period, whether it is the facade or interior restoration materials, hoping that citizens can harvest the stories about Xinfu Market in memory.
In the process of restoration and restoration in 2013, carpenters searched for many historical materials in the past, found the most original materials, and explored how the past materials could last longer through modern technology. The designer highlights the relationship between the new and the old by comparing the new and old materials.
The old materials used in the original buildings, and the new materials used in the new space facade. At the same time, the food market on the first floor has been increased to three floors, and the food market on the third floor is in contrast to the citizen center on the upper part.
A market space was added to the original one-story market, which became three-story.
At the same time, a five-story community housing and community activity center were added to the market.
The addition to the original one-story market building emphasizes the changes between the old and new buildings through the use of materials.
Let the old market be used without distortion, and the reasonable new look will continue to stand on the land of Wanhua.

How many ways to live a life? And how to make a choice? Except rice, oil and salt, or looking down at the “six pence” along the path of daily life, Maugham painted an image of an aspiring artist who's chasing his dream while yearning for the moon. The life we live in, the people we become, is the decision of own soul or the external push. We became a person in the eyes of others or a person in our own heart.
In this project, through the typological research on the residence, I analyzed different types of subjective consciousness and concepts of time behind diverse philosophy. By discussing the relationship between space and philosophy, the connection between space and function can be found, which leads to the methodology of this project. Therefore, the houses generated by different owners and various life styles will be expanded from abstract form to concrete space.
Separate each life scene, each scene and function constitute the daily life of the occupants.
CONCEPT FOUNDATION
The life we live, the person we become, is it the decision of the soul or the promotion of the outside world.
People are not objects that can be placed at will, and houses are not living machines.
Taking the prototype of the protagonist in "The Moon and Sixpence" is like Gauguin who pursues an ideal life, giving up real life to pursue the life of a painter he wants. Studying a virtual character whose occupation is a painter, the time line of life represents the space of life, and the functional space of each time period is connected with the streamline. Different people have different time lines, and will also have different forms of housing, in order to reflect the dynamism of time.
A working person who lives day, who is interested in painting, to choose life again in "The Maugham describes a dream painting art, so Pavee wants where he builds a new life inner freedom. He found a a house that belongs to him habits.

How to express the timeliness of architecture ?
The movement of light can produce sunlight in different ranges or directions through windows placed in different corners of the building. According to the geographical location of the site, the time and intensity of sunlight that occur due to revolution in a year are different. Based on this particularity, sum up which time period has the highest probability of the sun, so as to place the windows of the building.
Architecture needs to meet physical, psychological and instinctive needs, but the most fundamental thing is to meet the needs of people themselves. Although the rediscovery of human core needs is contradictory to the pursuit of efficiency and rationality in the modern era, the designer still hopes to start from the concept and put space demand first, and space demand is greater than efficiency. Perhaps such a concept is a waste of efficiency, but he is still an attempt to explore the concept and realization of the possibility of building a building.
According to the analysis and comparision above, the subjective consciousness behind diverse philosophy can be found. The charaters of house owners have influenced their life styles and philosophy, which shows that the forms and the connections of functions of architecture are closely related to the owner's personal consciousness. Both the spatial evolution on the dimension of time and difference of individual subject consciousness are directly related to the architecture.

The viaduct, as urban infrastructure, splits the urban texture, and at the same time, creates a negative space on a three-dimensional level. Public spaces usually have multi-functions, so based on the Culture of Congestion theory from Rem Koolhaas, I decided to create new public spaces under the viaducts from a critical perspective to establish a new urban space model. With the aim to meet the needs of basic public activities, I endeavor to form a continuous urban narrative to create a dynamic urban life atmosphere.
Taking advantage of the overscale space under the viaducts, I built a new public space connected to the nearby communities and catered to the needs of different people, including residents and tourists, with different routes. As a result, the unused space could be revitalized into a well-constructed and multi-functional public space, allowing people to re-embrace this area and reconnect with nature, and meanwhile allowing visitors to enjoy a natural paradise that is totally different from the urban atmosphere.
From the perspective of the whole urban texture, Baiyun Mountain is a natural plot in the city, and the original relationship between the city and mountain should be very close.
F rom the point of view of urban location, the site is located in Tianhe District, Yuexiu District and Baiyun District three municipal boundaries, no subway line has been built, in the planning of a new sub way line
through, at the entrance of Baiyun Mountain bus line. When thinking about the future development of Baiyun Mountain, in addition to bluntly placing a tourist service center in the existing site. Is it possible to use the existing gray space to think about the future possibility of urban space?
The new urban space template will bring new possibilities for the future of Baiyun Mountain.
Mountain
In Rem Koolhaas's understanding of Manhattan, Manhattan represents an example of achieving the desired density state both in terms of population and infrastructure. "Congestion" has a direct impact on the urban form and architecture in the city.
The development process of Baiyun
and the urban boundary: From the complete separation of nature and the city to the complete inclusion of nature in the city.
Realism and Utopia......
The viaduct at the entrance to the South Gate of Baiyun Mountain divides the city from the nature.*Rem Koolhaas, Delirious New York ---'Culture of Congestion'
I hope they are more efficient and symbolic !
From the point of view of urban location, the site is located in Tianhe District, Yuexiu District and Baiyun District three municipal boundaries, no subway line has been built through, in the planning of a new subway line through, at the entrance of Baiyun Mountain bus line. From the perspective of the whole urban texture, Baiyun Mountain is a natural plot in the city, and the original relationship between the city and mountain should be very close.
SITE SITUATION AND PROBLEMS
OFF LARGE SCALE
In terms of urban texture, the east-westdirected viaduct splits the city and Baiyun Mountain.
The section of the viaduct that passes through the scenic area is 28 meters in height which brings a strange experience for tourists to cross the viaduct to enter the mountain.
POLLUTION
The space under the viaduct is highly underused as it is used for garbage disposal or is abandoned in most cases, which is regrettable.
The viaduct separates the natural plot and the foot of Baiyun Mountain scenic three schools mainly serve the surrounding
TINY SCALE
Some space under the viaduct, especially in the residential areas, is too low, meters tall, so it is only used as a lot and has no room for public activities.
Many daily lives take place in the urban public space, which not only takes place basic urban functions, but also provides many other activities with the same meaning as urban life.
Daily space of "life" is gradually eroded and replaced by formal space such as "ceremonies" and "consumption". Public space that should provide activities place for the daily life of citizens should be alienated from people, resulting in poor quality of urban space
LOW UTILIZATION
Most of the existing space under viaducts is used as a garbage recycling plant and parking lots for trucks, causing severe pollution to the surrounding environment.
BAD EFFECT
There are three schools around the viaduct, two elementary schools, and one junior high school, which have been negatively impacted by the viaduct.
plot and turns it into a meandering landscape rather than a complete nature park. It divides the YUNTAI Garden scenic spot, as well as the complete plot of three schools, and the bridge directly into the community space, the surrounding area, in three-dimensional space is closely connected. especially low, only 4 a parking activities.
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN ?
NATURE + RESIDENCE + SCHOOL = GENERATOR
Public space is an important carrier of public life. As the stage of individual and social activities, it plays a central role in urban life. The organization and construction of public space can play a role in the return of public life of individuals and groups. However, in the selected site, due to its high height, it should be a positive condition to be used to create public activity space for the service population. However, from the negative point of view of reality, public activities in different functional zones are too lacking. So what happens in this venue when a culture of congestion is introduced?
According to site analysis, the viaduct spans three functional spaces, and new public spaces were built based on that. Tourists in the scenic spot have more room to visit alone. More functional areas were added for residents to improve their living standards and promote communication. At the junction of the school, a new space was built to allow children and students to play freely. According to the Culture of Congestion theory from Rem Koolhaas, the “congestion” of events, functions, and behaviors could result in pathological and dramatic effects on people. Because of the special characteristics of the space under viaducts, its reuse will not affect the existing urban environment but generate substantial additional values. This criticism is delivered through creating a crowded public space to form a new urban model.
Put different types of functional spaces on different types of functional parcels. Consider the accessibility of traffic roads and volumes. The spatial block organization is considered from both horizontal and vertical directions.IT'S A CITY GENERATOR.
When our city is full and it is difficult to find new public space, we may be able to use the space under the bridge to provide more possibilities for urban public activities. Connecting with public life, public space based on public life can combine each culture or material into a functional unit of a city's structure. In modern cities, people are gradually unable to recognize a single plot through a single function, and replace "congestion culture" into urban public life. For the purpose of increasing social conditions, it can be understood that various public living spaces are assembled, and its "content" is the living space that gathers various social models.
Public spaces with social functions were community and the natural landscape to create placed at the junction of the create a dynamic living atmosphere. Public spaces with educational and entertainment functions were placed to enrich students’ after-school life. More market spaces were placed in the community areas to enable more community activities with reference to the design of urban villages.IT CAN BE A NEW URBAN SPACE TEMPLATE.
The functional spaces were classified and placed on different floors to follow the order. The columns and bridge decks of the viaduct have given the spaces are placed on each floor according to functions, including spaces for tourists and residents. The main functional space is placed in the junctions to create a smooth connection among spaces and people. The main purposes for each space are dialogue, exploration, and game.
In the urban network and texture, the viaduct, as urban infrastructure, plays an important role in transportation and an important texture element revitalize the viaduct's unused space can reflect the city's emphasis on public space. Therefore, this design aims to connect public spaces to maximize public spaces to create more room for public activities in this critical context. Site analysis was conducted to analyze the current situations of viaducts and their existing problems on space use and their causes. To solve these neglected space under the viaducts, is activated and redesigned to address some social issues related to it.
