SITE ANALYSIS The site is located in Tongzhou District of Beijing, with Huali Park on the northwest side, and large dwelling district, technological innovation park, gymnasia and comprehensive business centre around. The investigation of the site shows that there is absence of necessary medicare facilities and comprehensive activity center for adolescents' recreation and study. So the design of children welfare institution attempts to combine children welfare institution with adolescent active center to attract the adolescents around to play in the institution, thereby fusing the children in the institution into the society to the largest extent. 4 2

Through research, I find that there are beautiful landscape environments around the site such as river and forest park. Therefore, in the architectural design, I take the way of echoing the outdoor surroundings, which brings the beautiful outdoor landscapes into the room, and then combine with the study of indoor space nodes to create a bright and lively space atmosphere.

Atrium space was designed as the main spatial and visual focus through an ascending spiral path. Based on different functional requirements, a series of open learning spaces were arranged along the circulation path as nodes. However, the alternating appearance of node and hallway created an interesting comparison of various spatial scales and formed an elastic rhythm. Here, the line between circulation and functional space was blurred. A traditional floor plan was replaced by a dynamic and three-dimensional circulation structure, which encouraged children’s visual communication and interaction.

Central Garden
The youth apartments and apartments for the elderly with ground floor shops along the street are linked up by a big sunken garden. By layered design, the garden brings much richer visual perceptions and practical possibility to the outdoor space, which forms a three-dimensional courtyard living level. The sunken garden, through different landmarks, expands the range of possibility for residents’ daily activities. People outside the building go down to the center of the beautiful landscape surrounding the site and people’s visual range becomes more open in the building. Outdoor space design technique improves the quality and quantity of public space and it also allows residents to extend their living range to the public sector, so that the communication among people becomes more frequent. 26

Outside the glass window additionally hanging metal gratings for sun-shade.
2、Sunlight Environment
3、Indoor Garden
Based on sunlight analysis, reduce the width of the metal gratings in the place where the sunlight is low, to guarantee good interior lighting.
Where there is large areas of indoor garden, the width of the metal gratings should be reduced, and the transparency of garden should be increased.
