To stimulate the creativities and capabilities of every team member, everyone proposed different schemes from different generation logic and theories. I led a 3-member-team and won the deaign leadership after a month of internal concept competetion. Here, the campus works as a self-sustained system, including knowledge production and energy production. Both progress from Input(classroom & dormitory) to transfer center(library & dining hall), then end at output(club bubbles) before repeating a new cycle through the intermedia farm layer.

New Mall City
HOPSCA Design from Chinese Landscape Paintings Techniques 2018 Spring Optional Studio Instructor: Max Kuo Partner: Lei Zhang, Jie Cen Contribution: Concept Design and Model Making, Elevation Design, Techinical Drawings The awkwardness of scale and perspective make Chinese landscape paintings applealing and mysterious. You could never find the space it depicts in the real world, because actually it is a flat collage of multiple landscape scenarios picked by the painter according to his personal perception and sensibility. And the organization logic of different scenarios lies in the balance between fragments and the whole. HOPSCA, s a kind of urban mega structure, its space logic is very similar to the composition of the painting. How to deal with the contradiction between human scale space and the giant massing is a long-lasting topic of it. Traditional shopping mall design always focus on the interior organization that totally separates the architecture itself and the shopping space as two different system. Here, in new mall city, we want to create a new type of mall, where activities naturally happens in the mega structure, with direct dialogs between humans and architecture.
The Gesture of Facade As a large-scale building for entertainment and leisure, it is mall's nature to attract as many people as possible. Its facade should be welcoming, passionate, or even be coltish. The amount and distribution of pedestrians can easily influence the gesture of facade.
From Market Street to HOPSCA The developement of commercial mall could be summarized as a process from openess to closeness. From the completely open street market to the introvetred modern mall and HOPSCA, the covering above the street, the proeotype of mall, has become more and more overwhelming. `

Home Above Market An Extension of Streets
2015 Fall Experimental Design Studio Critic: Fangji Wang Individual Work Awards: Honorable Mention of Tongji Academic Award, Poster Project of 2016 CAUP Teaching Seminar It is a project about street atmosphere representation in a solid massing of architecture. This studio was much based on a kind of means-end thinking, while the part of street typology study realized a previous deviation, which became the core of my scheme. To realize the space reversion from closeness to openness, I studied the elements and the scale of street, which is considered as the most public part of the city, then simplify and summarized the various streets into several typical space types in the premise of keeping the same atmosphere. Though in this project the external logic and the internal problem still stay in a relatively practical context, I did see the potential of self-evolution under the interaction of two design systems when a blurred boundary of public and privacy appears in the building.
What makes a street favored by Residents? "I walk around this area every day with my birds. Generally I like to walk on those small streets with trees near our community, or beside the river, where I can get a sense of peace and enjoy my day."

What Shapes A Street? From the observation of residents' favoured streets, the strongest feeling is that, street could never simply be the rest space of buildings, but all kinds of elements, some even intangible, that help reshape it and finally make it a so called street.

04 Caoyang Community Center
A Stable but Tensile Form From the Context 2015 Spring Experimental Design Studio Instructors: Yan Wang, Hongjun Wang, Hao Gan Individual Work Caoyang Community is the first new working-class community in Shanghai. Designed by Dingzeng Wang, an architecture professor of Tongji University in 1950s, its planning applied the Neibourhood Units theory by Clarence Perry. According to the guide line that all public facilities should be within 7-8 minutes walking distance towards housings, the local primary school becomes center of Caoyang neibourhood. Opposite to the local school is the commuty center that we are going to design in this studio. Starting with a realistic site model and tons of scheme massings, we tried to find a best form that fits the context perfectly. Making physical model and rendering photographic renders were the only tools we have for the design. It made us to rethink the relationship between architecture and urban context, and the importance of material combinations.

The Neibourhood and Community Center In the northern-west side of our site is the local school. Kids and parents would gathering on the street every 5:00 p.m. on week days, which means the community center should leave space for them. In the southern side is a small park and Jinyang River, and that makes the best view for our site. Housings are in the eastern side of our building.
Gardens and Building Openings Garden makes the best view of the community center. So the most public space, service hall, frames the view from garden. Also the sidewalk trees are important features here that decide the openings of the scheme.

Surrounding Tone and Corten Steel Red is the tone of the whole community. One of the typical features of Caoyang Working-class new housings is the red tiles on roof, which makes the whole community modern and elegant. Also, the local school also use red ceramic tiles as facade material.

05 2/3 Dimension Hybrids
Space Typologies in Abstract Drawings Research for ALLTHATISSOLID Instructor: Max Kuo Individual Work This project is the result of a search based on generating principles of form and space to guide an autonomous variation during the process of 2d&3d hybridization. The first logic principle lies in the 2d-3d transformation of Sol Lewitt’s Wall Painting #411. The second logic principle is a 4x4 grids system with components of wall-door-stairs, which are the basic elements of architecture substance. Here I admire the absence of architect, or, precisely, the delayed intervention of architect. We place ourselves in the secondary role, of Scamozzi to Palladio, to liberate the potential of the unpredictable compound from two separated generation logic. I made 6 successful hybrids from almost tens of combination, and place 2 of them in detail here, which I believe somehow touch the new territory of architecture typology.

06 City in the Crack
A Memorial City Built on Earthquake Ruins 2018 UA International Competition Third Prize (5/382) Solo Work After the disastrous earthquake of Belice, Gibellina, a small town of Italy, was completely ruined. 20 years later, the memorial land art Cretto di Burri was finally completed, which is a representation of the old city context with solid concrete massing. Here, the memory of earthquake, which was substantiated by the concrete land art, occupies the city space first and compulsively squeezes human activities to the cracks. In the same time, the surface of big concrete massing naturally becomes a free roaming plan of city. Finally, the site combines the pattern of these extreme urban systems, and then autonomously generates a brand new function mode and circulation system. It is the origin of the city in the crack.

Linear Cities The existing land art provides us with the perfect opportunity of exploring new urban pattern system. In our general cognition, the solid part of the city carries the substantial function, while the void part, the road, carries the circulation. There are two extreme city models based on that. When the boundary of road and building disappears, then comes the free wandering plan of no-stop city; when the boundary of roads and buildings is extremely highlighted, it comes the grids city of New York Manhattan.

Minimum Urban Model From ordinary city to city in the crack, we have to fit all different programs into new context, the linear space in crack. A set of linear space could operate as a sound system. And different urban systems finally work together as a new city.

07 Interim Urbanism 2019 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism Internship_N H D M Supervisor: Nahyun Huang, David Moon Contribution: Park Avenue Farmhouse schemtic design and modeling, graphic drawings, printing color adjustment As a part of a larger investigation “Interim Urbanism: Youth, Dwelling, City,” the materials assembled for the 2019 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism present selected critical instances and projections set forth around the conditions of youth dwelling in New York City. Youths represent a dynamic yet a precarious section of today’s populations. Integrated into the expected paradigms of traditional family structures, a large portion of today’s youth, while seemingly spontaneous in lifestyle choices and welcoming mobility, occupy the vulnerable spaces of the in-between and the prolonged interim. Engaging youth and their dwelling as conceptual cross-sections, the project investigates the multitudinous spaces that youths shape and inhabit as they intersect with sustained social, political, and economic uncertainties, inequalities, and emergent lifestyles.
Park Avenue Farmhouse Park Avenue Farmhouse, proposed for a development on an underutilized police parking lot in East Harlem, combines a micro-unit youth housing facility and an urban agriculture school, a supply and food market, and a community/teaching kitchen.

Radical Adjacencies
A Tale of an Ex/Urban Town Center Internship_ALLTHATISSOLID Supervisor: Max Kuo Collaborators: Yining He, Max Kuo Contribution: Plan Design and Drawing, Interior Space Design and Axon Drawing, Roofing Form Adjustment Gamuda Town Centre is an 8 acre proposal for a mixed-use town centre at the heart of an exurban residential development. An emerging though paradoxical trend is the millenial desire suburban roominess and downtown bustle—an urban middle at the center of nowhere. The developers translate this market demand with a facile proposal of tract homes surrounding a new Instagram city. Our design embraces the artificiality of this contradiction by making what Aldo Rossi calls a “gigantic man-made object” with experiments in scalar drifting and radical adjacencies between exurban voids and mashed-up streetscapes.
