The School of school An artist residency program and art school are intervened into the historical Waldorf Astoria hotel in order to combat the congestion, rigidity, and exclusiveness of the original hotel. The combination of its history, Delirious New York, and the seven traditional arts will be used to give Waldorf Astoria a new identity through the arts. The teachers are part of a residency program here. For students, it is a study-abroad program in New York. They are all temporary and outsiders. New York City will offer many opportunities and experiences. Midtown promotes constant flow of collective energy and inspiration for creative people. Historically, Midtown was a pristine island environment. With the grid and a series of transportation advancements, Midtown became a Metropolis. This development of Midtown led it to its characteristic congested state. Waldorf Astoria is characteristic of Midtown. It also has its own history of an eccentric, exclusive commune... for the wealthy. Much of its strangeness is highlighted in Rem Koolhaas’s Delirious New York. Today (2017), Waldorf Astoria is closed, undergoing major renovations. New luxury suites and apartment rooms will built. However, the nature of the new building is still unclear. This intervention hopes to treat the heavily congested, Manhattan-inspired interior the way Manhattan treats its congestion with public spaces and parks, to make it more porous, atmospheric, and flowing.
