“间JIAN” between hills and rivers Community centre design (NINGDE) Key words: Traditional Chinese Architecture, Reconstruction, Nature

28

As the study site is surrounded by hills and there is a river across it, so the main idea of this design is highlighting the interaction between the architecture and the nature. Besides, two groups of cement tanks should be maintained and there is a temple in the northwest side of the site, so the new designed community centre should not conflict with the local architecture style and become an extension of the regional culture.

Based on the above considerations, the layout of the whole centre is similar to the character “间”. This project is about the architecture and landscape design of a community centre. The name of this project is “JIAN” between hills and rivers. “JIAN(间)” is a Chinese character, it has multiple meanings, which are: The basic unit of room The interaction between two or more objects And the time or space between two or more objects

I make it approach traditional Chinese architecture by referring to materials of local buildings which are often tile, wood and stone. Moreover, I refer to the white wall and black tile of architectures in the south, so as to fill the architecture with southern charm. The local nature has superiority. Therefore, in order to take full advantage of the superiority, the architecture should be in an open form. In

View analysis

this way, breeze can enter the architecture and bring cool when it is hot in summer, so as to reduce use of air conditioners and make the architecture more energy-saving. Besides, the local rainwater is abundant, so slope roofs should be adopted, so as to drain off water.

The river passes through garth and bottom of the architecture. By combining the garth with waterscape, natural landscape will be introduced into the architecture. There

Pedestrian circulation

are many windows facing the garth and green hills, which will provide chances for people to enjoy the scenery. Internal traffic of the architecture is free and flexible, both beneficial to rapid evacuation and full of interestingness. As for the two groups of cement tanks on the site, two tanks of one group will be changed into stairs, and three tanks of the other group will be changed into the combination of tearoom and stairs. Each concentric circle is a haplont that decorates the vast Khorchin Sand to become a living and reproducing oasis.

At early stages, according to the ecological benefits of located area, each concentric circle will keep an area of 70 hectares to 200 hectares. Different ecological benefits will lead to the difference in the function and area of concentric circle.

After each concentric circle develops and extends as expected, more communication and connection between circles will be realized and more people and economic entity will enter the circle. Then, the small oasis will become small town and even develop into a city sub-center. This will expand the available city administrative region to force the desertification back.

Meanwhile, the living area can be divided into economic area and residential area. Economic area includes farmland, pasture, fruit-bearing forest and economic forest (area with better ecological conditions can have various income source to form a model of farm, pasture, grassland and forest, while the area with normal and poor eco-

logical conditions can only support less models to form a model of farm and pasture or forest and pasture). Residential area is the site for living. There is a reservoir at the center of each concentric circle and each reservoir will support the basic activities inside the circle, including irrigation, livestock breeding and domestic water supply, etc. Major water source are rainwater collection and partly from river water. Major water conservation methods include recycled water utilization and implementation of the irrigation methods of drip irrigation and infiltrating irrigation. Then a water circulation system is formed to reach self-sufficiency to the greatest extent. About electricity supply, wind power generation and solar power generation are applied mainly.
