This project hybridizes the Port authority with the unexpected introduction of a series of programs for children. It recognizes and embraces the peculiarity and the megascale of infrastructures in the city and tries to introduce a secondary scale to the block long massive terminal. A hybrid system of internal ramps and external helixes is introduced to allow sectional playfulness while maintaining circulational efficiency. The playful volumes of programs for children come into dialogue with the ramps and the helixes. Together they create a system of play.

Music Hall Ithaca, US Spring 2018 Core Studio Prof. Katharina Kral
Immersing in the row-house rhythm of Ithaca Commons, this music hall is an introvert. It consists of 6 “bands” stitched into one entirety. Each band has folds and turns, creating 2 types of spaces : inside/outside of the “bands”. They differ in level of privacy. The more private programs that need more protection are placed on the “outside” of the band, and enclosed by concrete walls to form well-protected chambers. More public programs are “inside” the bands, where spaces are more connected and open. Transverse connections are made when the level of two folds meet. Shifting of “bands” allow for entrances and openings for light. The sequence of design begins with the invention of a musical instrument (wind instrument assigned), through which lessons about acoustics and materials are learnt.

Tiburtina Rome, Italy Spring 2019 Core Studio Prof. John Zissovici Prof. Alberto Iacovoni
The proposal for a new bus terminal emphasizes the connectivity between the transportation hub Stazione Tiburtina and the local neighborhood. The station aims to engage with neighborhood public life while still maintaining the function of a bus terminal. It is divided into two linear volumes with distinct languages, creating a gradual passageway in between for redirecting people from Stazione Tiburtina back into the city. The front volume is a threshold that evokes public activities while the back volume contains transportational programs and a community sports center on the upper floor.

The two volumes create a passageway connecting Staztione Tiburtina with the city.
Learning from the aqueduct, the front volume is transversely permeable.
The structure of the back volume consists of a series of umbrella shaped column+beam systems
The two volumes divide the site into three parts: the front (public life), the back (bus circulation), and the garden (preservation of the existing garden).

Giudecca Giudecca, Italy Fall 2019 Core Studio Prof. Jerry Wells
This public housing proposal responds to the rising housing demand of Venice and Giudecca. From studying Italian piazzas as a typology, this project proposes a micro-city centered around a water piazza. Similar to most piazzas, the water piazza is oriented and marked by a civic building, in this case an open-air amphitheater. Smaller piazzas offer different levels of privacy to residents. In this city built on stilts, the public programs are concentrated on the ground level, creating a free-plan micro-city with fluid circulation. Residential units are designed to confine wet core area and maximize sunlit open space. The entire housing complex consists of 1200 units.

Market Force Fall 2019 Option Studio 12 weeks Prof. Andy Groarke Prof. Kevin Carmody Prof. Rodolfo Dias
The site is marked by a brick ruin of Victorian age WC. The triangular structure sits as a prelude to the newly-planned Museum of London. As a reminence to the historical Smithfield market, the transformation of the site introduces food-related programs in several phases. The project works along the schedule of the construction of the museum. The character of architectural interventions begins day one with a provisional occupation of the ruin for a workers’ canteen. After the completion of the museum, a series of reinforcement of the old ruin takes place. Gradually the addition becomes more permanent and as the use evolves into a multi-character architecture that include both a community pizzeria and a fine-dining restaurant.

Willard Way Ithaca, US Fall 2017 Core Studio Prof. Joao Almeida
The Willard Way site situates itself on one side of the Ithacan gorge. A sauna and a dwelling are sequentially developed on this unique site. SAUNA: it is an exploration of thresholds. The thresholds seperate differemces in temperature, humidity, and brghtness. They curate a gradual change of atmosphere leading towards the sauna and a sudden reveal of the cantilevering pool. DWELLING: A residence for the co-living of a perfumer and a dancer. Spatial volumes for professional practices are accomodated while connections are established through a common living space, as well as through visual and aromatic linkages.

Drawing Machine Ithaca, USA Fall 2016 Core Studio Prof. Val Warke
In developing a drawing machine that can be activated by human body, I created a machenism consisting of a field of dowels stabilized by elastic strings. By sitting or lying on the top surfaces, the dowels get pushed down and deform a piece of fabric hanging underneath, dipping the fabric into a pool of ink. The drawing result, identified by both the ink marks and the deformation of the fabric, not only reflects the location of human occupation, but also aspects of time and intensity.

Mangrove Ithaca, USA Fall 2016 Core Studio Prof. Val Warke
Among the relationships between mangrove forest and water, I was intrigued by how the mangroves collectively mitigate tsunami. Starting from analyzing the energy dissipation of tsunami and the aftermath of this intruding force, I came to realization of mangrove’s ability to diminish the force while leaving a trace of the intrudents. Inspired by this unique nature, I created a mechanism that functions similarly as the mangrove forest. The mechanism, consists of simple modules, blocks access to the roof garden of Milstein Hall and registers the trace of the rule-breaking attempts.

Hand Drill Cornell AAP Summer Program 4 weeks Prof. Jim Williamson
It starts with an attempt to record motion on a static piece of paper. The rotational and linear motion of the special analogue hand drill is exploded and recomposited on one drawing. The drawing is then translated to a bas-relief that focuses on revealing the moving tool’s trace. On the site of an Ithacan cliff, I aligned the trace of the drill bit along the edge of the cliff. The traces folds itself onto the two perpendicular surfaced to form spaces for contemplation. The sequential expeience of this place of contemplation involves linear meditative walks and moments for lingering where external views are suddenly revealed.

Vernacular Toolbox Rural Urban Framework Internship work When working with Rural Urban Framework of HKU, we conducted on-site researches of the various vernacular houses im China. We documented the contemporary adaptions to these traditional structures in means of drawings, diagrams, and models, hoping to develop a “toolbox for transforming these vernacular jems to fit with contemporary living condition requirements.
