LIVING IN HISTORY - TUNIS HERITAGE TOWN SQUARE MLArch ABPL 90172 Studio 3: Civic

02/2017

Tunis was an Islamic capital city with a great number of squares and mosques. These religious spaces consisted the primary public sites for those residents. After the WWI, nearly 100 years' development has replaced the squares with a high density of dwellings and gradually lost civic space in the old town. To re-introduce civic space, there are two challenges. On the one hand, there is no vacant land for new open spaces in such a high-density old town, on the other hand, destructing existing buildings may cause a risk of losing memory and historical identity.

Individual

Memory - Remaining physical marks. The constructions with a long history (at least 50 years) and local unique styles will be preserved when de-constructing the buildings on site. Participating - History and identity should be contemporary activities for residents instead of a steady memorial. Local unique traditional crafts such as cotton planting and weaving will be exhibited and able to participate. The old weaving machines and workshops will be collected and reserved to emphasize the historical identity.

SPACE + TIME - ARTIST GARDEN MLArch ABPL 90072 Studio 5: Macgeorge

Since 1911, Norman Macgeorge, a famous Australian artist has started living in 25 Riverside Road and spend the rest of his life. After he passed away, this property was donated to University of Melbourne. Because of its essential historical value, this design project will focus on history. It will start from its original design, an art and craft style, to analysis its special characters. Meanwhile, the surroundings and vegetation of the site will be analyzed, as they also show the ecological and indigenous history of the site. Based on the analysis, the design will divide this site into three parts which correspond with the three major ‘outdoor rooms’, an important characteristic of art and craft garden, and each ‘outdoor room’ will represent a part of time in history since 1911 to the present.

MOSAIC GATE - MACGEORGE HOUSE MLArch ABPL 90170 Studio 5: Macgeorge Macgeorge’s oil painting works are primary achievements of his career. This project selects his paintings which were drawn in the site and other representative Melbourne landscapes to acknowledge this great artist’s life and his tight relationship with Melbourne. Compare with traditional wall painting, using an array of colourful polyethylene cubes makes the wall can resist the harsh outdoor environment.

LIVING IN GREEN - SUNBURY LANDSCAPE PLANNING MLArch ABPL 90170 Studio 4: Strategies

09/2016

Individual

Statement Sunbury is one of the biggest suburbs in Melbourne. It has 22 square kilometres of land and more than 30000 population. There is a developed town centre in the suburb’s south part, and most of the people in this suburb lives in there. Furthermore, Sunbury’s natural vegetation resources are abundant. Several reserves and one wetland park locates along two creeks in eastern Sunbury. These form two green chains crossing the whole suburb from north edge to south boundary. In addition, Sunbury has convenient regional transportation. Two freeway and a railway cross the suburb from west and east. However, the inner distribution of infrastructure is heterogeneous. All bus routes and major roads are aggregated in southern Sunbury with poor public transportation to other parts of the suburb. The concept of this project is to plan a new town with a green living environment in eastern Sunbury. Eastern Sunbury is a flat land which has one freeway and the only railway crossing it. In addition, two creeks with several reserve lands surrounding this area. The core mission of this project is establishing a system of green infrastructures. From the macro scale, the two creeks with many natural reserve parks surrounding the site will be utilized as a green loop of the new growth area. The sally parts of those green reserves will be extended to inner growth area. Some of those will cross the urban growth area and connect the forests from western to eastern edge of the site as green corridors. They will become the bone of green infrastructure in town. Furthermore, block parks and town centre parks will be important green points in town, and small green space along major road will connect all green elements in this system. From a perspective of microscale, roof garden will be used in town’s apartments and large buildings. Each rooftop of public buildings will have a roof garden. Furthermore, the residential areas near reserve parks are low-density. This is good for protecting natural landscape and low density can guarantee each house has a good view of seeing the parks. The other mission of this project is building a convenient transportation. The project will utilize the existing freeway to extend new major roads in the growth area. All new roads come from the freeway and the new major roads will cross the railway to link both sides of the rail. One train station will be built in the centre of the site, which provide a regional public transportation for residents in the new growth area. In conclusion, with the building of green infrastructure and extending of transportation infrastructure, the new growth area will be a town which has a natural green living environment and convenient transportation to other suburbs.

Oppotunity & Challenge Abundant natural landscape resources. Sunbury’s east side has many reserves developing two belts of green space. Those reserve areas aggregate along two creeks at the bottom of two valleys. Advanced public transport infrastructure. Two freeways cross the suburb on west and east boundary. A railway passes the suburb from south to northeast. Vast territory with a flat landscape. Most of the territory on Sunbury is flat and suitable for building dwellings. Therefore, Sunbury’s dwelling density and population density is low. Heterogeneous distribution of infrastructure. All public transports are located at the existing town centre. It is hard for people to go to northern suburb for sightseeing unless using private vehicles. Unavailability of getting access to the reserves and viewing natural landscape. The only road approach to the valley is an unsurfaced path with the dead end. It is hard to see the reserve parks from existing town.

Criteria of New Urban Growth Suburb

Sunbury - New Growth Suburb of Melbourne

Urban Growth Area - Melbourne Scale Four goals of new urban growth area 1. Keep away from natural disasters (flood and bushfire). 2. Close to public open space and natural landscape. 3. Proximity to existing transportation infrastructure. 4. Avoid exploiting developed urban areas. Sunbury is chosen as the growth suburb because its 53% territory is in the appropriate urban growth area.
