REINVENTING WASTELAND
Landscape Regeneration of Deyang Factory Wasteland
Based on Water Circulation System

Deyang Refractory Material Factory has become a wasteland during the development and the transformation of industry. The architectural and industrial elements with unique historical symbols make this site representative and a symbol of Deyang’s urban development history. However, there are contradictions between factory production and residents’ life, the proportion of industry and service industries is facing adjustment, and the current water cycle in the region is unbalanced between artificial and natural. This design is to open the industrial culture window to local and non-local people, while create a new harmonious and symbiotic relationship between people and land.

Industry structure and employment analysis
In the process of urbanization in Deyang, the proportion of the industry has increased year by year, The industrial output value and industrial water consumption have same trend. The distribution of labor force in three industries tends to be balanced, but the actual utilization rate of labor force is declining, and the number of unemployed people is increasing.
Pollutant content of production wastewater
The production wastewater of refractory factory mainly comes from cooling wastewater and dedusting wastewater, which are polluted to varying degrees and cannot be directly discharged.
Dust pollution
A large amount of dust discharged from production pollutes the air and soil, rainwater contains a large number of pollutants, and vegetation growth is poor.
Groundwater drainage funnel
The water source for brick making for refractory is the direct exploitation of ground water. Overexploitation leads to the formation of drainage funnel in the underground and uneven settlement of the ground.
Conceptual framework of water circulation system
In combination with the production needs of the new plant, a water system consisting of two lines of industrial wastewater and rainwater will be built in the old plant, making full use of the site and industrial elements, so that the site can retain its memory while giving play to its ecological benefits. Combine the water purification process with the landscape, and make full use of the plant purification effect. The purified water can be reused continuously.
A glass cover is added to the rusty steel frame left in the site, which is combined with the sedimentation tank as the second step of oxygen exposure for industrial sewage treatment, while retaining the symbolic elements of the industrial era.
This building was a frame structure. Disassemble the wall and expose the roof structure to form a gray space. It represents the structural form of the industrial era, build an industrial exhibition hall, and create a place where indoor and outdoor space connect
Several brick chimneys left on the site are distributed in sequence, reflecting the production characteristics of refractory materials. During the transformation, we have given them a new function combination: windmill+water storage tank+viewing platform
For the factory buildings, reconstruct the stage-roof to increase steps and roof greening. The industrial wastewater shall be purified step by step through the overflow port
The scattered buildings are connected and combined by roof space, and transformed into a rainwater purification biological pool. The rainwater collected by the infiltration well is compressed to the roof by pumps. The buildings are connected by footpaths and transparent rainwater pipes, so that the rainwater purification process can be seen and felt
The office area of the original refractory factory is a building aided by the Soviet Union. The facade tiles are very distinctive. In combination with the entrance and the outdoor square of the exhibition hall, the facade form was applied to the pavement design, and use the demolished facade tiles, sand and stone as the structural layer of the infiltration well.
The original building quality is good, and the space scale of streets and alleys is pleasant. Most of the buildings are reserved, and raised flower beds are built around them to collect rainwater from the roof
A large number of waste refractory bricks stacked in the site are non renewable materials, which will cause environmental pollution if not treated well. They can be used as permeable pavement or flower bed retaining wall
