Letter from the editor There may come a time when your business needs outside advice, expertise or training. You might be a professional with a wealth of experience across several continents, but you may find a time when your knowledge of some specific business areas can inhibit your performance. Similarly, your company may have precise expertise in its field, but if you plan to scale up, diversify or advance, you may need to call in the experts. This can be a challenging process. As adults, it can be all too easy to stay in our comfort zones, repeating previous successes or customs, and few people in any field enjoy feeling bunglingly amateurish in a new area. Recognising the limitations of yourself or your company, however, is key to keeping ahead. With this is mind, in this issue we meet companies and institutions who can help you improve performance. We meet Deloitte tax partner Brett Norwood. With the “Big 4” seldom out of the news at the moment, it’s a chance to hear what they bring to the table. We also hear from Rutgers Business School executive director Kelly Brantner on their Executive Master’s in Business Administration program. With university graduates in their millions, professional qualifications like these can be the edge for a successful career. We also meet Fredrik Orkist of ChinaRAI about how they advise companies and individuals on the murky waters of Chinese finance. And we have our usual lineup of columnists, travel, dining, lifestyle and tech lists, reviews and more besides. Enjoy! Michael Cormack, Managing Editor

AGENDA

The “Big Four” accountancy and professional service firms, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, are known as the gold seal of accounting and auditing quality. Though their time in the thickets of Chinese business has not been without its bumps, they remain an essential service for any business seeking an IPO or to reassure investors. Brett Norwood is tax partner with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu’s Transfer Pricing team, and he told Agenda about the Chinese business environment and what tax means for companies here. What induced you to go from academia in Hong Kong to Deloitte in New York? I thought I had a good path to tenure, but I was finding it tough to motivate myself to publish, which of course you have to do to get on in academia, and I didn’t want to spend the rest of my career shut in my room. I’m really a people person. So every year in early January there’s a global “clearing house” series of meetings for economics PhDs looking for jobs, where universities, private firms such as investment banks amd and government branches such as the Pentagon source people. Tax didn’t then really appeal but the job description sounded interesting, so I went to an interview at Deloitte. I was amazed that you could get paid to go in, meet people, understand and analyze their documents business and their profits, and write a reports and provide recommendations to solve their problems. That seemed much more my kind of thing. What was your PhD thesis on? There were two sides to my research. First, a theoretical model of money and exchange, looking at what gets people accepting intrinsically worthless paper money, rather than gold or silver or whatever (and what leads to inflation when they don’t accept it). Also, by leveraging some of the skills I learned programming computers in the financial services industry, I sifted through stock market data, trying to determine the value of recommendations by analysts. So my interests were partly theoretical, and partly empirical and data driven.

The rules on partners for the Big 4 have changed. Can you explain what’s happening here, and how this will affect Deloitte? The accounting industry here is continuing to localize, as I believe has happened in other jurisdictions. In a nutshell, it seems an increasingly large percentage of Mainland Chinese audit firms’ partners must be local in some sense. This brings up the issue of flexibility – in an environment changing as fast as China, the same factors that allow opportunities to arise for success so quickly also lead to challenges to comply with various local market changes that can reverse one’s fortunes. As a partner in a firm with over 10,000 partners and employees, I have to trust that my colleagues are doing their best, as well, and understand that my success is critically dependent on their being successful, as well. For the Big 4, I think there’s a win-win situation regarding audit. We can both provide valuable services to MNCs moving into China, as well as to Chinese companies moving out of China into other, international, markets; and the expertise, experience and reputation of Big 4 firms also assists Chinese companies which are thinking of listing in foreign markets, too. For example, if the Big 4 cannot audit mainland Chinese companies, there are many local companies who will need new, less well-known auditors, and this could have various implications. Where do you source local recruits? We’re constantly involved in recruiting, as we’re always looking for and needing top quality people. We’re engaged in Tsinghua, Beida, and UIBE and other local universities to give us exposure to the best students in Beijing. We have a “Deloitte Club” in the universities, for example. But there’s always competition: the SOEs are now increasingly attractive, and of course lots of people seek the seeming stability of being a government official, including with the tax bureau. Is auditing or consulting the main source of business for Deloitte in Beijing? Auditing is the a core part of what we do. But of course we offer an extremely broad range of other services,

Executive Enhancement

Kelly Brantner on Rutgers’ executive education enhancing elites Text by Isabella Liu, photo by Sui

As one of the most prestigious American business institutions offering courses outside of their US campuses, Rutgers launched their China programme way ahead of the game in 1993 with their EMBA (Executive Master’s in Business Administration) dating from 1998. Focusing on the experienced professional, it’s the qualification for those who want to turbocharge their career. Their executive director Kelly Brantner told us all about it. How long have you been with Rutgers and what led you to this post? I have been with the programme since 2007, and at that time the programme was seeking someone who had previous executive development experience in education industry. I had been working in strategic management and executive education by then in Canada, so they just found me the right person for this job. When did Rutgers first came to China and why? Rutgers has been providing business courses and sending our faculty here in China since 1993, but our executive programme started five years later. At that time our Dean of Rutgers was quite visionary and foresaw the demand and popularity of an American-style business education here, so he went back to the States and brought our programme here as he saw the opportunity of filling the gap between students and teaching resource for Chinese business education.

an opportunity to interact with people from all kinds of perspective and background, so that it appeals to lots of students that an exposure to the international student body could diversify their experience as well. What does diversity mean at Rutgers? Rutgers has been famous for its diversity in the classroom. For individuals we have current students from Mongolia, Britain, the United States, Norway, etc. As for professions, we have students from engineering, high-tech, publishing, government, shipping industry, heavyduty equipment, all sorts of different ranges according to each year’s admission. However, what we do have is a lot of our alumni coming back sitting in our classroom after their own programme, which is what we do encourage, so that they stay connected with the class from the networking perspective and also could keep an up-to-date flow of their knowledge.

What are the advantages of Rutger’s EMBA courses? From a total online pool of several hundred applicants, the size of class admitted has been kept at a boutique level of 20-22 candidates. We have a very clear academic emphasis on a global business perspective and many of our faculty have international backgrounds and rich travel experience, which helps them to give more practical examples during class. Besides that, our class content has been changed frequently to keep up-to-date, taking the aggregative economic course as an example, 40% of the What advantages does Rutgers have set- class content has been updated from last year ting its EMBA programme in Beijing? understand each other’s culture, so does the impact of decisions made and how we work together as a virtual team for a specific project. The future team member you encounter in your life can be located in Africa or South America, so the ability to work together with different people becomes be a key potential for our future entrepreneurs. How is the gender ratio here in Rutgers Beijing? Like in the States, we do have stronger male numbers most of the time with an average at around 65%. However, things could work out differently in future as we had a 50-50 split in 2009 for male and female candidates. However, all female candidates in our programme are in senior positions from their own organisation, and we do value their contribution from a different gender perspective to avoid male dominance in all discussions.

How has your EMBA programme changed the work and life of their candidates? Many of our graduates receive job promotions from their original posts (from chief engineer to senior manager, for example), and their career opportunities are significantly boosted after gaining EMBA experience. Our feedback says that the intensive panel discussion and analysis on course materials from our programme help them to survive the challenging interview process in future interviews; and the vision on strategic planning learned from class is well-applied to entrepreneurship building.

How does the EMBA differ from an MBA? Generally EMBA candidates have a working experience of about 7–10 years, most of whom have reached the manager-level. However, MBA candidates are relatively younger, not quite experienced in their job and are still in need for business fundamentals. So in other words, an MBA provides more practical business information for its candidates at a lower level, whereas an EMBA involves more strategic thoughts on senior management. Is networking more important than academic development for EMBA candidates? I don’t agree with that. Though we are a historical institution founded in 1776 and have an extensive global network, the learning experience of our students still has top priority. We do encourage students to build their own connections after class with our alumni, but for that they shouldn’t sacrifice their time for academic study. After all, candidates ought to complete 18 courses in 14 months, and that doesn’t sound like a loose schedule.

TECH HEAD The most common way to learn a foreign language is to continually practice, though this can be a chore. However, with people frequently face-down in their smartphones, some smart app developers have combined phone addiction with language practise to make picking up a second tongue fast and engaging. Here are our picks to make your language practice fun, mobile, and worthwhile.

Rosetta Stone Rosetta Stone is one of the biggest brands in language learning in the English speaking world. It has long used visual learning without translations by pairing words with images —one of the ways a baby first learns to speak. Recently, Rosetta Stone just launched its first fully web-based languagelearning program named “Totale” (pronounced toe-tall-A) which aims to immerse you in a language via three methods: online coursework that can take up to 150 hours; live sessions in which you converse over the web with a native-speaking coach and other students; and access to Rosetta World, a web-based community where you can play language games by yourself or with other students to improve your skills. One problem is that it is out of the budget of many casual language learners, and budget travelers, so make sure you’re dedicated. rosettastone.com

Tell me More Tell Me More’s language-learning software offers powerful speech recognition, expansive content, and varied options for interacting with that content of all the language programs. That may sound great, but for beginners, it's overwhelming because most of the learning is put directly in the students' hands, without enough assistance to help them along. It seems more like a tool for an intermediate- or advanced-level speaker of a language, looking to brush up specific skills. For business people who need to finesse the art of negotiating, or advanced speakers looking to perfect idiom usage and prepositional phrases, Tell Me More is stellar. For novices, it may be too advanced and therefore unfortunately futile. So, is it an example of languagelearning software that's only good if you are already speaking the language? In a word, yes. tellmemore.com

50 Languages 50 languages is available in (oddly enough) over 40 languages and in approximately 1600 language combinations, e.g. German to English, English to Spanish, Spanish to Chinese, etc. The Android App contains 100 lessons that provide you with a basic vocabulary, with a free trial version containing 30 lessons. With no prior knowledge, you will learn to fluently speak short sentences in realworld situations in no time. The audio files can also be effectively used as a supplement in language schools and language courses, adults who have learned a language in school can refresh their knowledge using this app as well. The first 100 lessons help you to quickly learn and use a foreign language in various situations (e.g. in a hotel or restaurant, on vacation, small talk, getting to know people, shopping, at the doctor, at the bank etc.). So overall it can be a perfect choice for novice learners. On Android. iStart Developed by Mirai Language Systems, this iPhone app is available in four languages — German, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. It offers a real language course – starting with very basic subjects like alphabet, pronunciation and grammar, working up to complete dialogue (at beginner level). The course sections appear like a chat or IM session. There are free, ad-supported versions of each language, as well as paid versions (US $4.99). The apps each provide between 20 to 50 language lessons, with instructions in

both English and in the respective foreign language. The apps provide a clear explanation of grammar and vocabulary, and the lessons culminate with quizzes so you can test your skills. The main screen keeps track of your overall progress, and can be used to navigate to the different lessons. There is also a level of Facebook integration, which makes it easier to share some learning progress with friends. On iPhone. Duolingo A fascinating new project from Carnegie Mellon University, Duolingo helps you learn a new language by asking you to participate in translating the web. Users vote on the best translation submitted by other users, and eventually, the translated webpages can be published so that more speakers of other languages can read them. It relies almost exclusively on crowd-sourcing, which may leave many language learners wondering if it’s any good. How much can you trust translations that random people on the internet write? The answer, as perhaps with Wikipedia, is: more than you think. Duolingo has tremendous features that work surprisingly well at getting you to practice a language, and expose you to interesting content and people, and is actually fun and interesting. The language selection of this young project is currently limited to Spanish, German, and English (for Spanish speakers), with French in beta. Italian and Chinese are reportedly coming soon. duolingo.com

With financial structures for outside investment operating under an alphabet soup of acronyms (from VIE to WFOE), it can be a complex old business, where expert help is at a premium. What are the pros and cons of being an independent analyst versus working for a larger firm? There’s less work to get clients at the larger firms; you survive and get work based on the firm’s reputation rather than on your own, which is a plus. But you’re also a lot more boxed in. I quite like working on getting new clients and building a good relationship myself. It feels good knowing that when they engage you it’s because of your expertise and the relationship you have with them rather than the reputation of a big firm.

Due diligence (DD) in China is essential to making sure you have a good investment on your hands. You don’t have to look far to see examples of where bad DD has landed investors in trouble.

HR BRIEFING

Talking About Their Generation

How to handle Generation Z’s fresh crop of graduates We have all been made aware over the recent weeks of the burgeoning issue of Chinese graduates trying to get jobs. Almost 7 million will join the rat race this summer, no doubt most with the intention of landing themselves a quality position, undoubtedly in management or consulting. Sadly this is not the reality for the majority. My research has highlighted the fact that there are still almost half of last year’s graduates scouring the job ads.

I will be graduating in June, 2013. Like most of my friends, I have already applied for grad school in America and am also looking for jobs at the same time, so that I can have more choices and won’t be graduating unemployed. I am doing internships so as to find out what things that I like to do and also learn to get used to the office environment.” As with the UK, back about the time when my elder sister graduated, a Bachelors degree here used all you required to get a good job. This is a mere pipedream now. Not only are local Chinese youth competing with each other, but you also have an influx of foreign students who have been studying Chinese language and culture overseas that are also vying for the positions, as well as Chinese students who had the good fortune (or good connections) to move away from China to study and are looking to return.

Competition amongst them is fierce. We have one undergraduate here at Antal, Jessica, who is 21 (born 1990). She is doing everything she can to increase her likelihood of success when she leaves university: doing a dual degree (this is becoming more and more popular), interning, and participating in programmes abroad. She’s all too well aware of the uncertainty that she will face in the future – clearly this is heightened through her working in a recruitment firm and with my writing articles like this: ”Right now I am With so many graduates available to work, it is most worried about my plan after graduation. highly likely that at one point you will hire one,

I am the only intern surrounded by 100 professionals from all around the world! I don’t know what companies can do to help my generation out, but I believe that it is important that you have a good boss who you can constantly communicate with. Some of my friends found out that they did not like their intern companies, because they found it uncomfortable in the office and did not communicate with their colleagues like I do.”

Motorola Mobilizing

Motorola’s China presence and new Google venture It’s been three months since Google finalized its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, the mobile arm of the one-time communications giant Motorola. To industry analysts, the emergence of “Googlerola” is simply another chapter in the ongoing patent war between smartphone makers. But to residents of Tianjin, and to Motorola veterans throughout China, the takeover marked the end of an era. Fifteen years ago, Motorola was the hot company to work for in TEDA, Tianjin’s special economic zone. Along with Honeywell, Siemens, and a handful of other multinationals, Motorola helped transform Tianjin into a high-tech hub in northern China. Students at universities around China eagerly competed for Motorola internships, and people chosen to work at the company took great pride in their employment. “It was fantastic,” recalled Emma Haywood, who worked at Motorola from 1996 to 1999. “The company had a very good culture, emphasizing the Six Sigma quality system and Total Customer Satisfaction. It was the best company in Tianjin at the time, if I can say so. They hired the most talented employees and provided good benefits.”

24

AGENDA

The emergence of Motorola in the Chinese market also gave rise to complex web of local suppliers and customers, including the government, construction firms, and smaller manufacturers assisting with parts and assembly, as well as logistics companies. In all, Haywood estimates 1,000 or more companies were doing business with Motorola in Tianjin. By the mid-2000s, however, Motorola started moving in a different direction. In 2004 Motorola released the RAZR, a sleek clamshell phone whose popularity proved to be both a blessing and a curse, as the company failed to advance past its design, even as smartphones began to dominate the marketplace. 2004 was also the year that Motorola spun off its semiconductor division to form Austin-based Freescale Semiconductor, whose factories in China soon split the local talent pool with Motorola itself. Taking advantage of Motorola’s failure to innovate, Nokia surged ahead of Motorola in 2007 with flagship phones like the N95, while Apple eclipsed both companies with the iPhone and its App Store in 2008. Already reeling from strong competition, the global financial crisis hit Motorola hard in 2008, and the company

The Social Network

Wang Li of momotech on connecting strangers Text by Rachel Chen, photo by Sui

China’s huge urban population calls for more networking tools for social connection. After the huge success of WeChat (weixin), here comes momo, the new social networking app to help Chinese connect with each other

based on their location. With 10 million users gained within a year, momo helps smartphone users to make friends (or any other kind of connection) with strangers. Wang Li, Operations Director of momotech, told Agenda how momo does the trick. ON BACKGROUND I studied Business Adminstration in Beihang University (Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics). After I graduated, I volunteered in Inner Mongolia and when I got back I worked in the administration and logistic department of NEC China for two years. After that, I worked for NetEase (163.com) then during the Beijing Olympics, I switched to a friend’s training company to work as a director in charge of administration, finance and logistics for two years. I then moved back to NetEase and worked there until I joined momotech. ON PRODUCT We only have one product and that’s momo. momo is a mobile social networking app which can be used on both iPhone and Android phones. With a GPS function on smartphones, our product focuses on social networking and helping people connect with acquaintances and even strangers near their location for chatting and friend-making. ON STAFFING It was hard for us to recruit when we first started the company last August because we were a small startup and not many people knew us. We used to recruit staff through

our founders’ connections and friend referrals. As we grew and became more well-known, more and more people started to apply for jobs through our website and we needed to screen before interviews. We do have a long term development plan for the outstanding staff and our compensation is above average in the mobile tech industry. Many people think that our company is promising and there’s a lot of room for future growth; so they would prefer to work for us rather than for some big companies with less potential. ON COMPANY STRUCTURE We have five departments with around 60 people on aboard. We have an operations department in charge of promoting momo and its branding, customer service, marketing, and maybe sales in the future. Our product department is in charge of product development and its future planning. We also have a tech department doing the technical work, a design department responsible for product design, and an admin and HR department in charge of staffing, finance, and logistics.

ON IP PROTECTION When we started, we only registered copyright for the name of our product, and this caused problems with many other similar apps who copied our interface. However, even though they have similar layouts and skins, they are not able to compete with us because we update our product really quickly, and they’re not capable of challenging us in terms of technology stability and product quality and functionality. We are very confident about momo. ON COMPANY PHILOSOPHY Efficiency is all we ask for. Unlike big companies, our work is based on cross-department cooperation. All of our five departments work very closely together for our product, momo. Everyone is treated fairly and equally, the interdepartmental communication and coordination is very efficient and everyone enjoys the company environment.

ON THE OFFICE We have moved three times. When we first started we stayed in an office in Xiaoyun Centre which was an average office building with a space of 100 square meter for a few months. Then we moved to King’s Garden ON MARKETING We prefer to use weibo and Villa where we worked in a three-floor villa for renren.com as marketing tools to promote our half a year, and a few months ago we moved product because they’re very popular and we to Vantone Centre. do think that at this moment, that is more effective than buying advertisements for publicity ON AMBITION The core value of our company because people talk and the information spread is our product, momo. If you’ve moved on from Saturday night excesses, this might be a better way to heighten your weekend.

INSIGHT - on the job

EVERYTHING into account

Paul Gillis, professor, IMBA program co-director and accounting blogger Text by Mike Cormack, photo by Sui

I am a professor at the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University. I teach China’s future business leaders. It is an awesome responsibility, and wonderfully rewarding. I mostly teach in our International MBA program, where students from all over the world come to learn and to get a top ranked MBA education. My first career was as a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers. I spent 28 years with them, about half in the US and the rest in Asia. PwC brought me to China 15 years ago. I had taught while I was in graduate school and wanted to do a second career. Fortunately PwC had a generous early retirement program that let me do that. I retired at 50 and went back to school – first studying theology at Fuller Theological Seminary and the getting a PhD at Macquarie Graduate School of Management in Australia. Most of my career has been in international business, and I have lived abroad for more than half of it. Life as an expatriate can be exceptionally rewarding if it is approached with patience and perseverance. I am not naturally gifted

with either skill, yet I acquired them along the way. The most important thing I learned about succeeding in an international environment is to be authentic. People in every culture can spot someone trying too hard to fit in a mile away. I teach using the case study approach made famous by the Harvard Business School. The case study approach is a great way to teach business, but it is a real challenge for Chinese students. I grew up next to a firehouse and would run out when the fireman scrambled to go to a fire. They would let us play in the firehouse, and the best part was sliding down the fireman’s pole from the top floor to the ground. I never had that job, but we did build a fireman’s pole in our apartment in Beijing. Every job I had was a great learning experience. In the early years I learned how to work, then developed deep technical skills. In later years I learned how to influence others, win new work and develop talent. Gandhi told us to live as if you will die tomorrow, learn as if you will live forever.

Street pays too well, and we do a pretty good job preparing them for life there. Most of my students want international careers. For international students the best option is often to return to their home countries and establish their career. Competition for entry level positions in China is too tough, and it is important to have high level skills that are needed in China. Just being able to speak Chinese is not much of a selling point in a country with 1.3 billion fluent Chinese speakers. My best boss was always the client. If you always put the client’s interest first – whether that client is a graduate student or the CEO of a Fortune 500 client - everything else takes care of itself. I usually ignored the people I reported to, which you can get away with if your clients love you. I was given two great projects in my career with PwC – building an expatriate tax practice in Singapore and building the China practice. My current project, helping Guanghua School of Management become one of the world’s best MBA schools, is very exciting.

I need to stay current on what is going on in China business so I can bring relevant experiences into the classroom. My research is focused on US listed Chinese companies, so I spend a lot of time with regulators and on Wall Street. I will make at least seven trips to the US this year, so I work on one of the most beautiful universi- jet lag is my major challenge. ty campuses in the world. THE meeting place If you have an out-oftowner coming to visit, it’s always nice to take them to somewhere memorable or unusual, somewhere that will stay in the memory. Beijing doesn’t disappoint with a selection of obscure extremities and shining exemplars. Either way, they’re all something to write home about.

99 Yurts 九十九顶毡房 A yurt is the traditional Mongolian dwelling and this sprawling restaurant claims to have 99 of them. Actually there are only 84 yurts (but who’s counting?) which are free-standing private dining rooms that must be reserved. 99 Yurts is a great place to go with a large party for traditional Mongolian cuisine such as homemade yogurt, sour wine, and slow-roasted lamb. If you are bringing a ravenous horde out to dine, order the full lamb which is large enough to feed 12 or more. For smaller parties, try the lamb back which can feed six people. There is professional singing and dancing troupes dressed in traditional Mongolian garb that guests can have perform in their yurt while dining as well as yurts outfitted with KTV equipment. 99 Yurts is set on a spacious piece of land with no buildings peaking over the tree line so after dinner stroll through the paved walkways or lounge on swings scat-

WEEKEND TRAVELLER “A bright pearl in the Bohai Sea” as someone called her, Dalian has been declared the most livable city in China, and it’s a well-deserved title. It’s a clean, friendly and modern city with nice beaches and friendly people. Known for its fevered enjoyment of beer and football, the seaside spotlight city is ready to open her arms for your weekend timeout.

Dalian Darling

Attractions Dalian Discovery KingdomAlso referred to as “Dalian Discoveryland” and “Kingdom of Discovery”, this is an amusement park located in the Jinzhou district of the city. As one of the biggest theme parks in China (larger even than the Hong Kong Disneyland), Dalian Discovery Kingdom boasts an area of about 470,000 square meters with a large variety of rides and entertainment programs. The six main areas all have fabulous settings and names like“Discovery Square”, “Magic Forest”, and “The Mysterious Desert”. There are also numerous activities in the park, with many Chinese performing stars invited to come and join. It may not be Disneyland but Discovery Kingdom is amazing value for money. The biggest rollercoaster will definitely take your breath away, with enough of them to keep you entertained for the whole day with something for everyone. The park is well laid out

with the rides well spaced and easy to find and easy to go back to for another time. Ji Di Guan - Pole Aquarium The Aquarium is a good place to visit as a family or with children. Claimed as the “world's largest and the only location in China” which owns most ocean animals both in quantity and kind, you can’t miss it if you are a marine animal lover. Polar bears, penguins, polar belugas and sea elephants are all housed in this cold zoo. Standing in a 360° glass channel, you are be surrounded on either side and above by thousands of fish. More than just watching from outside, you can touch fur seals, sea dogs, and even sea lions in action in the sea animal section. The Marine Animal Performance features the mascot of Dalian – the polar Beluga. The lovely pair of white whales, Peter and Gaja, often perform for their spectators with zest

and professionalism. Other recommendables include the showcase of 300-odd sharks and the performance by four bottlenose dolphins, all very smart and well-trained creatures. The Polar Animals section features huge polar bears weighing a half-ton each, which together with the chubby, clumsy penguins, build you a true Kingdom of Ice. Tours Xinghai Square Xinghai square is a large open park just outside Dalian. Beside the park is the Binhai Road (pictured below), while there are also amusement park rides and small shops open along the boardwalk which make for a nice visit and walk. IVery different from the other inside city squares of Dalian, this is more a long walk in the coastal breeze. Also, the comparisons to Tiananmen, I found very out of place. While Tiananmen is steeped in history, PLA might and the “Big Brother” feeling with the Forbidden City looming both literally and figuratively, the Xinghai Square is a friendly family outing with swim trunks and hiking shoes. Jinshitan Green Center You can’t call it a visit to Dalian without going to the beach. The Golden pebble beach resort is a vast scenic area which has something of interest for all

ages – the beaches for swimmers, exhibition halls for explorers or history buffs, trails for walkers, rocky formations for photographers, yachting rides for enthusiasts, dolphin watches for nature lovers, and Disney places and corners and castles for children, and many more. Jinshi Square You can visit the bird sanctuary, go for ferry rides or walk along the coast while eating barbecued cod or squid. It is a little secluded and one must go early as tour buses last trip is around 6pm. Taxis are available, but they’re not cheap. Restaurants The Riviera Dalian has many good local restaurants but if you need a bite of Western food, this has to be the place to go. Next door to the Shangri-La Hotel, the food is excellent, the menu presents many quality choices, and the service you receive is friendly and professional. Abashi Curry If you want to find some great curry in Dalian, Abashi definitely would be worth a visit. It has got excellent vegetarian food, and a wide variety of Indian entrees and desserts are also available. The restaurant has recently become trendy among local Chinese and domestic tourists, so book before you go, or prepare to wait once you get there.

Book CHOICE

Evan Osnos’ Book Pick

China Airborne by James Fallows

A book which I think well worth reading is China Airborne by James Fallows of The Atlantic. This is a book that dissects the growth and ambitions of the nascent Chinese aerospace industry. You might not think that’s such a thrilling topic, or you might guess that it’s the story of China’s determination to put someone on the moon in the next decade. In fact, it is the startling story of how China turned a dangerous, low-quality commercial aviation system into one that is on track to surpass the American airline system both in scale and in quality, sooner than many people would think. China is expected to be the fastest growing market for Boeing and Airbus and with aspirations to one day build the planes of the future, it is taking this industry extremely seriously. Through his personal conversations with entrepreneurs and industry captains, Fallows tells an easily read and gripping story, one both informative and a constant pageturner. That story - of learning, economic development, infrastructural investment and politics - is a case study of China’s rise, and its risks and rewards, and makes for a book which captures where China Get It: is and where it is going. China Airborne is available from Taobao and amazon.cn.

Evan Osnos is currently The New Yorker’s China correspondent and has lived in China since 2005. He previously served as the Beijing bureau chief for The Chicago Tribune. He maintains a blog titled Letter From China at newyorker.com/online/ blogs/evanosnos/

BUSINESS book

All Marketers Are Liars

by Seth Godin

Every day we tell ourselves and ingest stories about the world. They might be true or they might be false, but nevertheless we believe them. We live in an age where every business must have a compelling story to tell its customers, because if it doesn’t, very soon it will have no customers at all. In his latest book All Marketers Are Liars, Seth Godin uses dozens of examples to show us that the most successful stories aren’t necessarily the most truthful but are usually the most compelling and plausible. That means they are believed by those who tell them, creating strong emotional attachments which form the basis for long-lasting relationships: the very essence of marketing. For anyone involved in customer relations or digital media, this book helps explain how to form lasting, solid connections with a large audience, and what you need to do to maintain them.

insight - perfect day in beijing

FUN-FILLED DAY FIT FOR A FAMILY

Katy Sinnott, CEO of Eric Paris Text by Rachel Chen, photo by Judy Zhou

My perfect day would not be complete without the two most important people in my life: Eric, my husband, and Andreas, my son. We would get up early at 7:30 am and have a quiet family moment together over breakfast. After a leisurely meal, we would prepare for our day. I would pop off for an hour of swimming lessons with Berry Schipper at the Riviera Pool. He has done a world of benefit for my swimming technique. After a challenging swim, I meet Eric and Andreas at the CITIC Hotel Beijing Airport, formerly the SinoSuisse Hotel. We would spend the early afternoon there paddling in the kiddy pool and playing with squirt guns. I don’t even feel like I am in Beijing here, aside from the enormous jets flying very low near the hotel. The low flying airplanes seem to be a plus for my son. After swimming, I would get a beautiful blow-dry from my salon team and then off to lunch. The one thing Beijing has a dearth of is good quality Tex-Mex restaurants. Luckily for us, Q Bar has just opened Q Mex, which is an awesome Tex-Mex restaurant with stellar frozen margaritas. We can even sit outside and enjoy the warm Beijing sun. The brunch has free flow coffee, margaritas and Bloody Marys. Now the restaurant scene is complete! To get us walking off that Tex-Mex, we go to Tuanjiehu Park for a relaxing stroll and a bit of play. The park has nice things to offer for small kids. The park is built around a beautiful lake that you can take a boat on and it also has a little amusement park that my son enjoys to no

end. Don’t expect Disney Land, but it does the trick for a brief escape from the masses of the city. By this time Andreas is ready for relaxation at home and Eric and I can have our evening just the two of us. Dressed in my awesome Guo Pei outfit, China’s number one haute couture designer, we would go to the Yin Bar at the Emperor Hotel to watch the sun set over the golden tile roofs of the Forbidden City. From the Yin Bar, we would move onto TRB for the most elegant sophisticated personalized dining experience on offer in Beijing with truly one of the best “Maitre d’s” I have met worldwide, Ignace Lecleir. He knows what you want before you do. Topping off the night we would stop at 1949’s Bar Decollete for a glass of champagne. Then we make our way into the night in Madam Mao’s Red Flag sedan rented from the Red Capital Club.
