HI! I’m Xiyue, an architecture graduate from Monash University. My studies at the Monash University under the degree of Architectural design allows me to develop my design and research skill across multiple media, topics and scales, from physical model making and innovative digital modeling, to building technology, through to urban analysis and planning. During my year at Monash University, I have also engaged in other forms of creative projects, such as audio-visual art and an installation piece with a sustainable design theme for a Saturday In Design event. In my final semester, I together with 7 other students implemented a pavilion pavilion design committed by MONA Museum in Hobart. This project is currently under construction and will be open to the public soon in January. From this design and make project, I received a clear overview on the collaboration among architects, clients, builders, material suppliers and other related departments in a building process. Now, I am ready to take a further step to work, to contribute and to learn.

LIQUI-FI is a proposal for a new academic building in Monash University that promotes active lifestyles and dynamic learning spaces. Through an use of a distorting operation, the building is resulted in a liquefied form with a continuous loops of circulation. The strategy of blending the urban landscape into the learning environments activates an urban atmosphere of the architecture. The building is a landscape of a learning environment.

The River Derwent Heavy Metals Project: Retaining Wall project is designed by a group of 8 third year architectural students from Monash University. It is a collaboration between architects & artists and scientists from a variety of organisations to study and clean the heavily polluted River Derwent that passes by Tasmania’s MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). Illustrated, a rendering of an interpretive wall proposed for MONA’s lawns that would show visitors the different sorts of metals contained in the river bed. DERWENT ALCHEMY is a spa center that sited at the corners of the Rock Cod Point, Hobart, which is the conjunction point of an open green zone and an industrial zone, serves as an attractor to the public to this site which performs also doubly as an occupiable water filtration system to the zinc factory’s water discharge before they entering the waterway. The connective tissue connect the neighbourhood to a primarily industrial zone from a master-planning scale.

URBAN Glenorchy area is currently experiencing a renewed commitment to urban revitalization and enhancement. Derwent Alchemy Industrial Spa Centre recognizes the significance of this revitalization effort and its potential to be a catalyst for the rejuvenation of surrounding neighbourhood. ENVIRONMENT River Derwent is one of the most polluted river in the world as it suffers from extremely high levels of heavy metal contamination in sediments. Located at the water edge on LUTANA area ( where the zinc factory is), Derwent Alchemy Industrial Spa Centre is a proposal that responses to this major toxic concern by both cleaning the water and celebrating the area’s unique industrial characteristic. The proposal delivers an expression of the vision behind the river’s transformation and innovates a 21st Century green urban environment, which will become the keynote of redevelopment along Glenorchy. Derwent Alchemy turns Hobart environmentally most concerned area into a positive image, and therefore becomes a tourist attraction. It establishes stronger connections among River Derwent , the metal factory, the city, its people and its guests.

REMEDIATION: Water is in a recycling loop within the spa centre. Heat is provided by the pipes while they are pumping the heated water into the pool. A biofiltration system on conveyor belt is actively filtrate the water. Water not absorbed by the plants would be carried to a series of water treatment technologies, using everything from algae to UV light that will help trap solids and extract heavy metal.

MORELAND AIR LIVING is an mixed use apartment building that built on an existing car park that involves both family housing, social housing program and a communal garden. The project aims to bring people from different background together as a community meanwhile provides a new neighborhood image of an industrial zone.

The design giving each type of dwelling a colour theme to identify the characteristic of the individuals. Also, the colour facade emphasizes the concept of a modular system.

THE COMMUNAL GARDEN BECOME A SCREEN TO THE CAR PARK, ALLOWING SUN LIGHT GO THROUGH TO THE GROUND LEVEL. THE SCREEN THEN CONTINUE WRAPPING AROUND THE BUILDING TO PROVIDE PRIVACY FOR THE RESIDENTS.

Interlocking apartment shapes allow the family dwellings to have light from multiple directions and good cross-ventilation. The green screen which wraps around the building creates areas of outdoor space between the screen and dwelling as well as providing protection from heat and limiting overlooking.

SLUG UNIT: TECHNOLOGIES & ENVIRONMENTS 2, YEAR 2, sem 2

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF: Consider structure in relation to the human body, in the form of a bench, and then work upwards to a windscreen. These come together in a small inhabitable space, and then are extended in the design for the bridge itself and an observation tower. Site: Spanning the Yarra River on the site of Seafarers’ bridge running between Docklands and the Exhibition Centre

STRESSED RIBBON STRUCTURE SYSTEM

PHYSICAL MODEL A stressed ribbon bridge is a tension structure (similar in many ways to a simple suspension bridge). The suspension cables are embedded in the deck which follows a catenary arc between supports. Unlike the simple span the ribbon is stressed in compression, which adds to the stiffness of the structure (simple suspension spans tend to sway and bounce). The supports in turn support upward thrusting arcs that allow the grade to be changed between spans (where multiple spans are used). Such bridges are typically made from concrete reinforced by steel tensioning cables. Where such bridges carry vehicle traffic a certain degree of stiffness is required to prevent excessive flexure of the structure, obtained by stressing the concrete in compression.

RETHINK UNIT: TECHNOLOGIES & ENVIRONMENTS 3, YEAR 3, sem 1

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF: A semester-long investigation on building H on the Caulfield campus, Monash University. These investigations will be in the areas of thermal comfort, heating and cooling loads, illumination levels, and solar radiation. Analyses will be completed and reflected upon in order to identify possible ways in which design interventions could improve building performance.

Nothing can be seen, properly speaking, but light. However, light can never be seen.

NUERO-TRAFFIC VIDEO ART INSTALLATION, 2013 Nero-Hormones in the brain are influenced by light, which in turn affects moods and behavior. Visible light not only stimulates visual impulses, but also has a large influence on the glands and the autonomic nervous system. When the spectral composition of light is less important than its intensity, it has a stimulating effect on the metabolism and organ function, which in turn affects overall health.
