Mission Statement Accepted by the AFG Core Planning Team - Spring 2005 The American School of Dubai, an independent, not-for-profit organization, offers what is best about American education in order to provide an educational experience designed to promote the maximum potential of its students. The school will challenge and assist students to become intellectually adept, thoughtful, and ethical contributors to a global society.

We believe

• Education is a shared responsibility of the administration and faculty students, parents, and the school community. • A safe and secure environment that is marked by respect for the rights of others and acceptance of personal responsibility is conducive to effective learning. • Education must encompass the development of the whole individual: academic, aesthetic, creative, social, physical, and emotional. • Students are individuals whose learning is influenced by age, prior knowledge, background, experiences, personality, and physiology. • The learning environment and educational process should recognize and accommodate different abilities, learning styles and interests. • Education is most effective when the learner is actively engaged in the learning process. • Education should provide meaningful and relevant experiences that are valuable beyond the classroom. • The students’ school experience should foster self-esteem and selfconfidencewhich are integral components of the successful learner. • Education encourages each student to develop positive character traits and assist them in understanding themselves and how their values relate to the world in which they live. • Education should foster independent thinking to encourage creativity, thoughtful decision-making, critical analysis, and an appreciation and understanding of differences in opinion. • The school experience should promote positive interpersonal relationships where students can work cooperatively with a partner, group, or team to become caring, sharing individuals, aware of the concerns of others. • The establishment of realistic, yet challenging expectations and the learner’s responsibility for their achievement promotes excellence. • Education should encourage responsible citizenship and global awareness. • Education should instill in students a desire for lifelong learning. • Well-planned change and purposeful institutional and personal renewal will lead to continuous improvement and enable the educational community to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

The curriculum is based on the American system of education. All major textbooks and most instructional materials are purchased from the US. ASD is governed by an appointed Board of Trustees. A Superintendent, three principals, and a Director of Curriculum and Staff Development administer the operation of the school. The school’s current enrollment is about 976 students. The geographical distribution includes children from many States in the US as well as from 44 other countries. Approximately 75% of the students are from North America. LIVING CONDITIONS IN DUBAI The American School of Dubai is a school which was established for the children of American employees living in Dubai to enable their children to obtain an American education while their parent’s employment requires them to live in Dubai. In more recent years, ASD has also enrolled students of other nationalities in addition to Americans. All grade levels are fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, which is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Most of the teachers are trained in the United States or Canada and have teaching certificates from the United States or Canada. The school scores extremely well academically when compared with schools in the US. Most parents leave Dubai and ASD feeling that their children have received an education superior to that which would be available to them in the US. In addition to the academics, the school provides a wide range of social activities for the students. On a daily basis, a wide variety of sports and afterschool activities are available to students on and off the school campus. Students in Grades 7 – 12 travel to other countries in the area to participate in sports and cultural activities with other American schools. The total population of the United Arab Emirates is estimated at 4,041,000; Dubai itself a very modern city, hosts approximately 1.2 million residents. The population is concentrated principally in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and in several smaller coastal towns. While Arabic is the traditional language of Dubai, many other languages are also spoken, including Farsi, English, Hindi, and Urdu. As an English speaker, you will have no difficulty. The religion in Dubai is Islam. Local TV and radio stations broadcast in English and English language daily newspapers are available. Dubai has an abundance of fine restaurants and recreational facilities. Supermarkets are stocked with as wide a variety of foods imported from the US and Europe as one can find in most supermarkets in the US. The American residents in Dubai live in a very calm and peaceful environment. Most parents of children attending ASD feel that the environment in which their children are living in Dubai is a safer environment than they can expect to find when it is necessary for them to return to the US.
