Continuing the Family Journey: Embracing a New Era with the Fourth Generation at the Helm

HRB Jacobi continues to be one of New Zealand’s most longstanding and reputable importers and manufacturers agents. After nearly 95 years trading the business is now celebrating the 4th generation of the family joining the team to take the business well into the future.

Founded in 1932 by Henry Redvers Buller Jacobi (HRB Jacobi), Buller acted as a sourcing agent for large New Zealand companies spending months at a time away travelling by ship. Continued on by John Barrie Jacobi (Barrie) who took over running the business in late 1950s. Barrie with unyielding support from his wife Annbritt, who designed and managed the production of an inhouse brand of children’s clothing, was instrumental in securing agencies for international companies which continues to this day with new agencies secured by third generation Peter Jacobi. Peter joined the business in 1988 after working in chartered accountancy firms and becoming a Chartered Accountant.

We are now onto the 4th generation with Peter’s daughter, Elizabeth, fully involved in the business. Elizabeth obtained her university degree and after working in other businesses, joined HRB Jacobi Ltd in 2015. Like many children in family businesses, Elizabeth and her two brothers have been involved, from a very early age, with jobs in the warehouse during school and university holidays, also in their very early days as models for advertising material.

Having completed a diploma in Interior Design, Elizabeth (and Peter) is now responsible for the main running of the business bringing sound knowledge, technical expertise, interior decor talent, great eye for fashion and passion to keep improving what we do. Throughout our 90 plus years of trading history we have sold most types of consumer goods with current focus on: Homeware, Rugs, Coir Doormats, Babywear and Toys.

wife, became more involved once their three children started secondary school and today Anna is heavily involved in design, product selection, and sales.

HRB Jacobi Ltd imports and distributes product from around the world with a reliable supply network sourcing from ethical factories using sustainable materials. We provide our customers with quality well priced merchandise as a result of the company buyers constantly developing and sourcing new products to keep the ranges fresh.

Our procurement and sales processes, financial systems, order fulfilment and ethical values ensure relevance in today’s competitive business market.

Be sure to visit the Elizabeth and the team at HRB Jacobi at this year’s Autumn Gift Fair Hall 3, Stand #3150.

The Shows must go on!

XPO Exhibition’s Brent Spillane wins award for his outstanding contribution to keeping the Auckland Showgrounds open for events.

In November of 2023, the New Zealand Events Association’s (NZEA) annual Event Awards were celebrated in Ōtautahi Christchurch. We were thrilled to see our very own XPO Exhibitions Managing Director and Chairman of the NZ Gift Trade Association, Brent Spillane, recognised as the winner of the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Business Events’ sponsored by Business Events Industry Association (BEIA).

Brent received the award from BEIA Chief Executive Lisa Hopkins, after being acknowledged by judges for the daunting task he faced common to the entire events industry: to survive, rebuild, and find a new normal in the aftermath of Covid-19.

In addition, another massive blow followed closely when New Zealand was set to lose its largest purpose-built venue for events, concerts and exhibitions - the Auckland Showgrounds. Brent recognised the grave repercussions of losing such a crucial venue and fought tirelessly in the High Court on behalf of the industry to successfully secure the showgrounds. This monumental achievement stands as one of his most significant contributions to the events industry during this challenging period said the NZEA.

Importantly, the NZGTA (New Zealand Gift Trade Association) and its committee deserves a special mention for their work spearheading an Environmental courtcase to protect the future of the Showgrounds alongside the Spillane’s High Court case.

Congratulations Brent and thank you for your efforts in helping to save this iconic venue, the Auckland Showgrounds, for all to enjoy well into the future.

Destination Hawkes Bay

Hawke’s Bay is open for visitors, and we can’t wait to welcome you to the newest Great Wine Capital of the World.

The region, which was impacted by last year’s Cyclone Gabrielle, is ready and waiting for visitors to assist in the rebuild of the region’s economy.

Visitors to Hawke’s Bay can experience everything Food and Wine Country is renowned for.

Whether sampling the region’s award-winning wine or dining at the celebrated bistros, strolling through the famed Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market or cycling on the region’s undulating limestone bike trails, admiring the stunning Art Deco architecture or simply enjoying the hazy afternoon sun, the reasons to travel to Hawke’s Bay remain the same.

Retailers, accommodation and hospitality are busy, and the cruise season is set to deliver a record number of visitors. So now is the perfect time to visit New Zealand’s Food and Wine Country and support local!

Hit the Trails

Hawke’s Bay offers fantastic cycling for all levels of abilities. Visitors can hire trail or e-bikes from a range of excellent providers before discovering Hawke’s Bay by bike.

The Hawke’s Bay Trails boast 200km of flat, easy-riding trails throughout the region, connecting award-winning wineries, unique cafés, quaint country pubs and artisan outlets. Visitors can sign up for either guided or self-guided tours that discover the region’s wineries.

Little legs are also catered for, with a selection of cycle skills tracks to impress even the most discerning mini-riders with pump tracks and smaller road tracks specifically made with little cyclists in mind.

Heading Outdoors

Locals and visitors alike love getting outdoors in Hawke’s Bay. Whether it be a walk up Te Mata Peak or an adrenaline-filled rafting trip down the Mohaka River, a sunrise at Ocean Beach or lazy day at Waimarama Beach, the diversity of Hawke’s Bay’s outdoor experiences makes it a haven for active relaxers.

Families in particular will love the varying landscapes of Te Mata Peak and the California Redwoods, a visit to the Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony and also the region’s newly developed public playgrounds.

Devour World-Class Wine and Food

Hawke’s Bay delivers New Zealand’s foremost array of provenance-led, culinary experiences. The region’s unrivalled bounty ensures visitors experience the full gamut of paddock to plate, grape to glass and tree to table feasting. What’s more, last year the region was named a Great Wine Capital of the World, putting it alongside wine tourism heavyweights such as Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Adelaide and Verona.

Team this with the region’s many award-winning wineries, and you have true food and wine country. Hawke’s Bay has more than 200 vineyards, 70+ wineries and 30+ cellar doors; so the toughest decision is where to start!

The Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market is one of the oldest and largest in the country and visitors to the region will love tasting fresh, bountiful produce straight from the growers themselves. Or for a sit down dining experience, the incredible bistros and restaurants throughout Napier and Hastings are frequently named among the best if the country and include Central Fire Station, current holders of Cuisine Good Food Award’s Regional Restaurant of the Year title.

Hawke’s Bay retains a strong Art Deco vibe thanks largely to the area’s architecture which emerged following a devastating earthquake in 1931.

The Art Deco Festival will return in 2024 for the first time in four years with a spectacular calendar of events, including free public showcases, outdoor concerts, vintage car parades, fashions shows, dining experiences, great Gatsby picnics and so much more.

Alternatively, visit outside of this time and take a tour in a vintage car or join a guided walk to discover some of the best examples of Art Deco buildings you’ll see anywhere. The architecture is fascinating to even the most novice of admirers.

TRENDS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

In the dynamic realm of social media, where trends evolve rapidly, it is crucial for small retail business owners to stay ahead of the curve. As we embark on the journey that is 2024, let's explore the top six social media trends that are poised to shape the landscape for businesses like yours.

SHORT-FORM CONTENT

DOMINANCE:

The short-form content trend is here to stay, with platforms like Instagram Stories, Snapchat, and Facebook Stories continuing to captivate audiences. For small retail businesses, leveraging these temporary yet engaging snippets can provide an authentic and behind-the-scenes look into your operations. Consider sharing limited-time promotions, product launches, or sneak peeks to foster a sense of urgency among your audience.

VIDEO-FIRST STRATEGY:

In 2024, the video reigns supreme. Embrace a video-first approach across platforms, creating compelling content that showcases your products, tells your brand story, and engages your audience. Whether it’s short-form videos on TikTok or longer narratives on YouTube, video content offers a dynamic and shareable way to connect with customers. Consider incorporating tutorials, product demonstrations, or user-generated content to enhance your brand’s visibility.

PERSONALISATION THROUGH AI:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly sophisticated in tailoring user experiences. Small retail businesses can harness the power of AI to personalise social media interactions. Utilise chatbots to provide instant customer support, recommend products based on individual preferences, and enhance overall engagement. A personalised approach fosters a deeper connection with your audience and increases the likelihood of conversion.

NICHE COMMUNITIES AND MICRO-INFLUENCERS:

Building genuine connections within niche communities is becoming more influential. Micro-influencers, with smaller but highly engaged audiences, are proving to be effective for authentic brand endorsements. Small businesses should identify relevant microinfluencers within their niche to amplify their reach.

COMMUNITY BUILDING AND NICHE NETWORKS:

Building a sense of community on social media is more crucial than ever. Encourage conversations, usergenerated content, and collaborations within your niche. Small retail businesses can thrive by tapping into niche networks where their target audience congregates. Whether it’s a Facebook Group, a LinkedIn community, or a chat, fostering a dedicated space for your customers can lead to increased loyalty and word-of-mouth marketing.

SUSTAINABILITY AS A CORE VALUE:

Conscious consumerism is on the rise, and businesses that embrace sustainability will stand out in 2024. Showcase your commitment to ecofriendly practices through social media. Share your sustainable initiatives, highlight eco-friendly products, and engage your audience in discussions about environmental responsibility. Small retail businesses with a clear commitment to sustainability can not only attract socially conscious consumers but also enhance their brand reputation.

As small business owners you wear many hats (marketing on social is just one of many!) It’s important that if you do decide to make more of an effort on social media and your time is stretched, it’s better to take on just one of these trends and do it to the best of your ability. As opposed to spreading yourself thin and attempting them all!

2024 promises exciting opportunities for small retail businesses in the realm of social media. By staying attuned to these trends, small retail business owners can navigate the ever-evolving social media landscape and position themselves for success in the digital age.

Terms and Conditions of Trade

Unless otherwise expressly agreed all sales of the vendor’s products are made on the following terms and conditions and these terms and conditions shall be implied in each order for the sale of those products:

Payment

Payment of the purchase price and all other amounts in respect of each order is due on the 20th day of the month following the date of invoice or delivery, whichever is the earlier.

Unless otherwise agreed, all payments must be in cash without right of deduction or set off. Time shall be of the essence in payment.

The purchase price is based ex warehouse or factory and unless otherwise shown or stated is exclusive of GST and other taxes, charges or levies, insurance, packaging and freight, all of which shall be additional charges to the customer.

The purchase price may be increased by the vendor to account for any change in the NZ:US dollar exchange rate to the extent that such change affects the costs of manufacture or supply of the products to the customer between the date of order and delivery.

Title in the products does not pass in any circumstance until payment of the purchase price and all other amounts is made in full in respect of those products. It is expressly agreed that title to the products does not pass upon delivery or the giving and taking of possession and the vendor reserves the right to recover possession of the products and to enter upon the customer’s premises without notice for such purpose in the event of any default in payment. The customer grants to the vendor a security interest in all goods supplied under this contract, and their proceeds. At the request of the vendor, the customer will execute any documents and do anything else the vendor requires to ensure that the security interest created under these terms and conditions constitutes a first ranking perfected security over the goods and their proceeds of sale and the customer will supply all information the vendor requires to complete the financing statement or a financing change statement. The customer waives any right to receive a verification statement under the Act. The vendor and the customer agree that sections 114(1)(a), 116, 117(1)(c), 119, 120(2), 121, 125, 126, 127, 129, 131, 133 and 134 of the Personal Properties Securities Act 1999 do not apply to the security created by these terms and conditions.

Not withstanding that title does not pass, risk in the product passes upon the product being uplifted by or dispatched to the customer even if payment has not been made in full.

Warranties

No warranties, representations or guarantees are given, made or implied in respect of the products except as stated herein or as may be required or implied by law.

The customer is deemed to have accepted each order unless written notice of any shortage, defect, or other reason for non-acceptance is given within 10 days of the date of delivery. Liability in such circumstances is limited where appropriate to the replacement of missing or defective products or the refund of an appropriate portion of the purchase price at the option of the vendor.

The customer relies upon its own inquiries and examination of the products and upon such independent advice or consultation as the customer may require for that purpose and purchases the products upon the customer’s own independent knowledge, skill and judgement, particularly as to the particular use or suitability of the products for the customer’s purposes and to all other characteristics and specifications of the products.

Where the goods or services supplied are for the purpose of a business, the customer acknowledges that the guarantees in the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 do not apply.

Where the products have been manufactured by the vendor then the vendor will manufacture the products to a good standard using materials, parts and wowrkmanship of good standard. No responsibility is accepted for defects in materials, parts or workmanship in products manufactured by other parties.

The vendor is not responsible for failure or deterioration of the products where the products have been affected by improper handling or storage, contamination or other adverse conditions, alteration or interference by other parties, the use or application of the products outside the normal or intended purposes of the products or outside the

NZ Gift Trade Association

directions or limitations imposed by the manufacturer, supplier or vendor or otherwise in an improper or abnormal manner or circumstances outside the control of the vendor.

Except where the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 applies it is expressly agreed that the vendor is not liable for any consequential or economic loss arising from any defect in products or otherwise in respect of the products or any failure to deliver (whether or not arising from the supplier’s negligence) and the customer shall protect the vendor from any claim or demand from other parties in respect of the use or application of the products by the customer or subsequent purchasers or users of the products.

The vendor is not liable for any amount which exceeds the purchase price or other amounts actually paid for the products by the customer.

Intellectual Property Rights

The customer does not, by reason of the purchase of the products, acquire any rights to the copyright, patent, trademark, design, and other intellectual property rights held by the vendor therein.

No liability is accepted for products which have been manufactured under the directions or specifications of the customer and the customer shall protect the vendor from any claims for infringement of the intellectual property rights of third parties which might result. Where the manufacture is at the request of the customer, copyright in the product remains the

The sale of the products shall be limited to the manufacturing capacity of the vendor, the availability of materials, components and labour, the ability to source the products from the manufacturer or supplier, and to other circumstances outside the reasonable control of the vendor.

The customer shall permit the supply of the customer’s name and details of the sale of the products to the customer for statistical and credit reporting purposes for the benefit of members of the New Zealand Gift Trade Association Inc.

The sale of the products to the customer is on a non-exclusive basis and the vendor has the right to sell the products to other parties at such prices and terms of sale without limitation on each occasion.

If the customer defaults in payment or in any other terms or conditions in the sale of the products, or is placed in receivership, wound up, declared bankrupt, or otherwise become insolvent, or if any of such events be seen as imminent or inevitable by the vendor then in addition to any other rights or remedies the vendor reserves the right to demand the immediate payment of the purchase price and other amounts then unpaid even if not otherwise due for payment and to cancel or suspend the completion of the sale of the products or other orders of the customer not then completed.

The customer shall ensure, where it is lawful to do so, that in its own terms of trade it excludes liability both to itself and to the vendor under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.

If the customer fails to pay moneys owing to the vendor when due for payment then the vendor reserves the right to charge interest on those amounts, until payment is made, at the current base overdraft rate of the vendor’s bankers plus 3% calculated daily and payable on demand.

If the customer defaults in performing its obligations under this agreement and the vendor incurs costs in enforcing its rights under this agreement, the customer shall pay those costs (including commissions, all legal costs and disbursements, and any other cost incurred in the recovery of the debt) to the vendor or its duly authorised agent on demand. The above terms and conditions have effect except as expressly modified or inconsistent with any other express terms and conditions made between the vendor and the customer from time to time in respect of sales of the products.
