University of Canterbury: Preparing Engineering Graduates for the Workforce
We want our graduates to hit the ground running when they enter the workforce so the University of Canterbury requires our Bachelor of Engineering undergraduates to engage with industry during their training. The Work Experience programme and Final Year Projects link students with industry.
Work Experience
To be awarded their degree, it is a requirement that our graduates complete 800 hours of industry work experience. 320 of these hours can be practical ‘hands on’ experience, for mechanical engineers ideally in a machine shop or workshop. A further 320 hours is to be ‘professional’ work, ideally in a design office supervised by a professional engineer.
Win-Win for Industry and Undergraduates
Have you got a pet project you haven’t got time to work on? Do you need help in the workshop over the summer period? Do you require detailed design of a system or component? Is research required to develop a new product? Our undergraduates are ready and eager to help.
“The student is quick to grasp new concepts and is a great communicator. Their contribution to the team has been outstanding and we would love to have them back!” (Quote from an employer).
To advertise your opportunity or learn more about practical work experience please contact: engpracticalwork@canterbury.ac.nz
Mixed Reality Enhanced Human-Robot Interaction
The University of Canterbury is conducting research in the field of “Mixed-reality-enhanced intuitive humanrobot interaction for the industry 4.0 era”. The research aims to take human workers out of dangerous, harmful and unpleasant working environments by equipping robots with human intelligence and command/control via human-robot interaction, including the use of Mixed Reality links. Several novel and potentially high-impact results have already been developed.
Aerospace
Aerospace Engineering involves the design, development, testing, and production of aircraft, spacecraft, and related systems and equipment.
Sponsorship of Final Year Projects
Final-year Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) undergraduates employ their knowledge and skills to provide solutions to real industry-driven research and development needs. By engaging with a realistic engineering problem they develop professional skills that help them transition into the workforce.
The bulk of the projects come from industry, with many described as ‘back burner’ or ‘pushing the envelope’.
As a sponsor, you gain access to the extensive University of Canterbury engineering facilities and academic and technical experience to help engineer a solution to your opportunity.
Find out more about final-year Research and Development Projects and view recent projects completed in collaboration with our industry sponsors.

Driving Innovation: Creating a Team of World Class Engineers
What the world needs now is … world-class engineers, lots of them. We need problem solvers. Innovators. Out-of-the-box thinkers. People who want to change the world. People who have the technical skills and the emotional intelligence to work together to create and drive change. We’re starting with what we can control: our business, in our little part of the world.
We currently employ 50+ mechanical engineers around the country. We provide mechanical engineering resource when and where our clients need it. Our team work on secondment with clients on a projectby-project basis; be it machine or product design, FEA, or project engineering on large industrial sites. This puts us in a great position to know what a World Class Engineer looks like.
In our role as seconded engineers, we are exposed to practically every corner of the NZ engineering industry. Our clients include Cavotec, Babcock, HamiltonJet, Fisher & Paykel, Fabrum, WYMA Solutions, Stabicraft,
Enatel, Silver Fern Farms, UBCO, Lion … the foundation of these companies is clever engineering. We rub shoulders with the best and we are on a mission to continue to build our reputation as an incubator for World Class Engineers in New Zealand.
We’ve launched a 5-year development program to make this happen. It’s built around three learning streams: a wide variety of secondments; resources and systems that encourage knowledge sharing throughout The Caliber Network; and formal training delivered by experts. Once they’ve completed this program, engineers will be able to be thrown into any project and thrive.
We’re willing to invest substantial time and effort into this because we are passionate about building the New Zealand engineering industry. It’s our purpose to enable NZ engineering to deliver the best solutions in the world and to provide NZ engineers with world-class experience.
Come along and experience The Caliber Network at Site 135. Our engineers will be on hand … some in person and some online … ask them some of your gnarly mechanical engineering questions and benefit from their collective wisdom.
If you’re interested to know more about developing World Class Engineers, come to the Industry 4.0 Theatre at 1.30pm on Thursday and hear James Richardson talk about What Makes a World Class Engineer.
