Here we are again celebrating another anniversary. We turned 2 earlier in the month and there is a lot to excited about and grateful for. Xposure has grown a lot in the last 2 years and has expanded in a lot a great ways. While there is always room for improvement, our second year has been tremendous. In this issue, we celebrate the 50+ years of music history with Mary Wilson of The Supremes. Ms. Wilson and I spoke for almost 2 hours discussing all of the highs and lows as well as growth as one of The Supremes. We also spoke about the controversy that seems to surround The Supremes and Ms. Wilson also shared stories of the funniest times she had with Ms. Ross and Ms. Ballard. I learned a lot during our conversation and was truly inspired. Thank you Ms. Wilson again for your time and the invaluable confidence you have given me. Also in this issue, we give a Fall preview of the new films hitting theatres, our favorite Fall boots and coats, and celebrate the debuts of the Frankfurt Motor Show. We also feature some of the greatest looks from New York Fashion Week. We have great Next on Deck and Power Moves features, the gentlemen featured are very talented and have very exciting projects on the horizon. If you already have the winter blues and thinking of traveling to get away, look no further than the 2011 Barbados Food, Wine & Rum Festival. We also ask some of the best financial gurus about keeping finances in control during an out of control economy. I would like to take time to thank all who have contributed to the success of Xposure Magazine and our online home Xposure365. I would also like to thank my family and friends who have stood by me and have been understanding of how much time I put into each and everything centered around Xposure. I know some times I’m not there as often as I should be but I want this to be something we all can be proud of. You all have been my support system and words cannot begin to express my gratitude. Last but not least I would like to thank Zinio and all of the staff who made me feel welcomed and valued. I am proud to say Xposure is powered by Zinio and I look forward to cultivating our partnership into a solid, successful, profitable venture. There is a lot to be thankful for and a lot to look forward to. Thank you to my readers worldwide, please continue to send your feedback to goldyn@xposure365.com. See you 11.11.11! Until next time............................................... Goldyn P. Smith Publisher/Editor in Chief goldyn@xposure365.com

Iconoclasts

She left her mark on the world forever. Gone but never forgotten. RIP Amy

Next On Deck My fondest memory with her is when we recorded her last album in Melbourne Australia. She was filming Queen of the Damned & Virgin flew every producer to Melbourne to finish her album because they needed it for a deadline..She would film during the day & we’d cut all night. We had a ball. #GoodTimes Now you were also apart of Bad Boy’s production team in the 90’s and most recently worked on Puffy’s Last Train to Paris how did you get introduced to Puff and become part of his production team? J. Dubb

For everybody that has ever listened to a Bad Boy record or most recently listened to Last Train To Paris they are familiar with super-producer J-Dubb but just without knowing it. We here at Xposure Magazine want to introduce you to our readers and give them insight to the man behind the scenes. When was your first introduction to music and when did you decide that this was the career for you? I discovered I could play music when I was 8 yrs old and my grandfather brought home a organ. I immediately knew how to play it. From there my grandmother enrolled me in piano & organ lessons. I had great piano & organ teachers. My organ teacher was the world renowned Twinkie Clark of the Clark Sisters. I knew this was the career for me when I came to Atlanta after high school with a friend of mine to produce his album. After being in the studio I knew this is what I was meant to do. You’ve had the opportunity and privilege of working with a female we all love and miss Aaliyah, what it was like working with her and what’s your fondest memory of her? Working with Aaliyah was one of the best producing experiences I’ve had thus far in my career. I’ve worked with a lot of star artists; a lot of them are stuck up or hard to work with; don’t take advice well. Aaliyah was so humble and sweet. She was definitely an angel.

I got signed to Bad Boy as a Hitmen in 1996. I produced the group Absolute’s demo & Noontime was shopping it. Everybody wanted the group including Puff. He flew to Atlanta to meet me on a Friday. I was in New York Monday & I was signed as a Hitman that Wednesday. That weekend I was producing SWV’s 1st single “Someone” off of their last album. It happened fast for me. Any advice for up and coming producers looking to get their foot in the door and any pitfalls you can urge them to avoid? My advice to young up and coming producers is first and foremost study and learn what Production & Producing is. Many times beat makers believe they’re producers just because they made the beat. That is so far from the truth. In reality they just made the music which is only a part of the song. The other piece is writing the song. Then producing and overseeing the vocals getting cut. Then approve the vocals; then mix & add any missing pieces to the song to make it complete. When you do all of those things then you can say you produced the song. Word has it that you were commissioned to score a motion-picture, so congratulations on that. Whate other projects can we exoect?. For the last two years I’ve been scoring Tyler Perry’s House of Payne & Meet the Browns; which I just won a 2011 ASCAP Film & Television Award for Music in Top TV Series “Meet The Browns’. I’m currently scoring the movie “Spin”, a horror film which will be released spring 2012. I’m also Executive Producing the Platinum Selling Group Silk’s new album; which will drop early 2012; single coming Fall of this year; it’s going to be HOT! Bringing REAL R&B back; no rap singing on this album; straight R&B that the fans know and love from Silk. I’m producing a song on the Legend Gladys Knight’s new Christmas album which is dropping this Christmas. Also check out @iammonay & @TynaQOfficial on Twitter. They both have singles I produced that we’re releasing virally on Youtube & on iTunes. Monay’s single is called “Poppin Tagz” on iTunes Tyna Q’s single is on Youtube called “Set It Off” My twitter is @JDUBAKAGOATMy website is http://www.music180.com/jdub

Rotomi is a very eccentric name, is it your birth name? How do you pronounce it? My birth name is Rotimi! It means “God Stand by me” in Yoruba which is a Nigerian tribe.. My parents are Nigerian, so they named me that. It is pronounced Row-Tim- ME. Just share with us where you’re from, how you grew up and how you got your start in music. I’m from Maplewood NJ, but I am of Nigerian Descent. I grew up playing every sport, doing every school activity and I traveled a lot with my parents. My parents enforced education first, and whatever I wanted to do second. Growing up where multi-tasking was the norm, it made me into the man/artist/actor I am today. I’m able to do a lot at one time and not get stressed. I started singing when I was 6 years old. My mother heard me singing in the shower, and 2 weeks later she had me singing at my aunts wedding. You were fortunate to perform on 106 & Park. How was that experience and how has the transition been since the show until now? The experience was incredible! It gave me the added confidence to continue to do what I love! After becoming a World wide trending topic on Twitter, I realized that God has a plan so big for me and my team! The interesting part is that we haven’t even scratched the surface. Since 106, I’ve received a lot more respect and publicity. I believe I am one step closer to the overall goal. Being that you are a new artist what are 3 things you’d want a new listener to know about you and your brand of music? When my listeners listen to me, I want them to always expect soul, authenticity, and a relatable story that they can attach themselves too. I want my music to be considered Timeless - music that you can play 50 years from now, and by telling stories I feel like its very possible. What’s your ultimate goal in life? And let the people know where they can keep up to date with you. My ultimate goal in life is to become a role model for all the kids who don’t believe that you can get a college education and pursue your dream! Graduating from Northwestern Univeristy has made me the man I am today. A degree is your ticket to the world. Get that and also live your dream, you’re unstoppable. You can reach me at twitter.com/Rotimi www.Rotimimusic.com Rotimi

Roberto Cavalli shared photos from the brand new London Boutique earlier this month. Located at 181 Sloane Street, the boutique is a bright colorful display of Cavalli’s work. The opening party was filled with celebrities who were also there to celebrate London Fashion Week. It was reported Cavalli and Fendi swapped store locations and threw opening parties the same night. Mr. Cavalli said of his new flagship store “I love London, it’s my number one, it is where I draw my inspiration from.”

Power Moves

Jameel How he got his start in fashion – Being in the fashion industry opened a lot of doors for me. I started in 1997 and I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I’m a Brooklyn dude and I look in the mirror like everyone else. Coming from New York, its not about your looks its more about your character. I was invited by someone to go to a model search here in Atlanta back in 1998. There were a lot of agencies there, I knew nothing about the business at the time but 13 agencies approached me. I signed to an agency based here in Atlanta La – Gence and it was a beautiful experience. La- Gence is no longer around, I went to Elite and then to Click. Signing with an agency, you become part of the machine. The experience gave me knowledge and a business model of what to expect in this industry.

When I went to the agencies, all I knew was I wanted to model. I didn’t know the business but I quickly learned it wasn’t about just looks but the total package which is why I started my company. My company used to be geared to only talent development. Now we’ve gone on to not only nurturing talent and artist but also the products that stem from the. The company was in the development stage in 1998 and things started to pick up, around 2005 was when things really jumped. In 2000 we got a contract from SFX which became Clear Channel, we were doing all the Hi Fi Buys shows and booking all the talent for them. I’m proud to say we’ve been the catalyst for nurturing the careers of many talented individuals. Right now I’m working with a very promising artist named St. James, he’s one our premiere artist. They say an overnight success takes ten years we’re at that point where we’ve nurtured ourselves and are just looking for the right projects to continuously work on. The film side is still going, we’ve been busy in many ways my partner did the Empire State of Mind video. How he decides to work with a potential client – From a talent management perspective, they have to have their package together. I would prefer to work with talent who understands the development process and have their package together. When I say a package, that entails much more than just looks. It means you have discipline, loyalty, patience, character and an understanding of how the business works in addition to talent. Future projects – We’re definitely working on the St. James project, I also have other artist as well who I love their sound like Zaq Coldly, Our – World. And as for me, I’m still pushing the envelope, diversifying between fashion but leaning toward film these days. What Jameel knows now – I would go back to those 13 agencies because many people don’t know who they are as a commodity. When you know who you are, you can explain that to the people who are in the position to represent you. I’ve worked alongside Tommy Hilfiger to Russell Simmons and I’ve always represented myself in a professional manner. Regardless of the capacity being at the Magic shows or as recently completing a Bevel Eyewear campaign. To know who you are as a commodity is to know your worth in business. If you leave it up to someone else to tell you, you may never know your full worth.

When I started, there weren’t a lot of African American models and they didn’t know how to market me. My family is from Belize, we have some Asian in our family and my great grandmother was Mayan. With my features, they really didn’t know how to place me. I was placed in a lot of ads like Rich’s, More information – bammentertainment.com and definitely catch us on Coca – Cola, Duckhead and Goody’s. The conservative look is Twitter @bamm20thcentury as far as I’m concerned you just have to stay tuned. fine but there was a lot more diversity I have to offer. Overall, it was a great experience and blessing. Last words – A dream isn’t over because your eyes are open, keep pursuing it and work hard. Every day your eyes open is a new His own company – I have my own marketing and opportunity to learn. management company called Bamm Entertainment. I knew people who had talent but did not know how to market 16 themselves.

Reflections of The Supremes - 50+ years of Greatness

Headliner

Where Did Our Love Go – Martha and the Vendellas turned the song down, we weren’t in a position to turn down anything so we took it. To us, it did not sound like a hit, it wasn’t Dancing in The Streets. I was like the spokesperson so I told the guys if we don’t make a hit, our parents will send us to college. We hated the song, the guys kept telling us it was going to be a hit. We recorded it not liking it, Florence and I didn’t like it because we didn’t have anything to say on the record. We prided ourselves on harmony and all we sung was baby, baby. The record became a hit and of course the guys were saying they told us so and every time I see Eddie Holland he says he told me so.

Working at Motown with the other talented artists – We were the youngest act until Stevie came and then he was the youngest. We were there the day he auditioned, Mr. Gordy told us a genius was visiting the office. Stevie came in every bit of nine years old and he started playing the drums, then the organ and every instrument in there. It was wonderful at Motown, everyday something would happen like that. I remember when Marvin came to Motown and he was cute as he could be playing love songs and we would sit and swoon. Eddie and Paul was apart of The Primes and they linked up with Otis of The Distants and became The Temptations. They were all fine because they were all tall and handsome as can be. Mary Wells was the big star of the label and it was all very exciting. A lot of the artists would take part time jobs at Motown like receptionist, driver for the other artists and other jobs. It was a real exciting place to be around, very creative and it was great.

The famous finishing/etiquette school – Mr. Gordy’s family was real supportive of him and progressive, his sisters had their own individual record companies and migrated into his company. Mr. Gordy’s sisters knew of Mrs. Powell who was a motivator and she was brought in to motivate us. Mrs. Powell will tell you she did not teach us how to use spoons and forks, we had to learn that at home. The program was called Artist Development, Mrs. Powell motivated us, Charlie Atkins was our choreographer and Maurice King who was a great band leader and he was the musical director. I just had Mrs. Powell with me for the gown Being a part of Motown history and what is was like for the artist in exhibit, there are 50 gowns in the exhibit and it is a worldwide that era – It was a strange world to live in back in the 60s because tour. She was with me in Philadelphia for the exhibit and people just ate her up, everyone wanted to know how she kept us of the civil rights issues taking place. It was totally different when motivated. She was telling everyone she used to tell us we would we were down south. We knew to only drink from the colored sing before kings and queens one day, at the time we laughed water fountains and we knew there were rules to follow. That’s but it ended up coming true. She would teach us how to get why I say it was an impossible dream because of the laws, kids today don’t really know how much the pioneer people did. There in and out of limousines and everything, she told us we were were a lot of doors opened because of Motown and what we did diamonds in the rough and they were there to polish us. It was very uplifting and even though you have talent, you need people so the artist today can make millions of dollars. It may be hard for to tell you and encourage you. I would like to follow in her the younger generation to understand why the older generation has the attitude we have because of what we had to live through. footsteps and maybe start my own artist development agency. I Some of the people of the older generation are still fearful because have eight grandchildren and I tour all the time and I have a new single out now. My life is kind of full but it is something I would of what they know and how things work. like to pursue. The first time she heard herself on the radio – We were still living in the projects, rock and roll was new and exciting. The song was called I Want A Guy written by Berry Gordy and Frank Gorman. We were walking down the street and heard it playing from someone’s window and it was a dream come true. Its hard to put that excitement into words, people were yelling and screaming and it was very exciting. We were local celebrities at that time and we were still in high school – it was a wonderful time. 18

First time on Ed Sullivan – It was like one of those moments in your life like getting what you really wanted for Christmas. Every family in America watched The Ed Sullivan show, when we performed it was one of those really great moments. To see three beautiful black ladies on television was groundbreaking and there was a time where you would not see black people on television unless they were maids.

Fondest memories of Ms. Ross and Ms. Ballard – We were like what real girlfriends are, I know a lot of times people forget that. The first trip to Japan wearing geisha costumes and big wigs, seeing different people and how they lived. We would just turn to one another and hug each other because we couldn’t believe our dreams came true. We did the Royal Command performance for the royal family, the Queen Mother was there, Prince Charles, Princess Margaret. I remember when we were in Holland and we ordered room service for lunch and Florence ordered a steak tartar because she said it sounded good. The food came up and they started mixing the ground beef and eggs and all kinds of stuff, Diane and I had our food. The man finished preparing Florence’s food and gave it to her, she looked at the plate and said honey aren’t you going to cook it, he said no madam its steak tartar. She told him to take the place and cook it, we didn’t know what it was and we found out. Endorsement deals – Now everyone endorses everything but we were one of the first pop acts to endorse products. The Supreme White Bread was one of the first by a pop act, we received letters from the NAACP and all the black organizations asking why we were endorsing white bread. At the time, that was the only bread people ate there were not different varieties. It was controversial because it was the first deal of its kind, I still have the wrappers for it. We had wig lines, bread, and we were the first to do Coca – Cola and we had all of that in the 60’s. The controversy surrounding the departure of Ms. Ballard – After we had all of our huge success and traveling all around the world it became quite stressful. When Florence was a teenager before she became part of the group, she had been molested. In those days, it was not something you talked about she was taken out of the group and then came back to the group. Diane and I thought Florence was okay because we had become famous and thought she was okay. The harder the things got on the road, the more stressful it became for Florence and she internalized it and started drinking. The drinking was causing her behavior to be erratic and that’s what led to her being out of the group. I was closer to her and I would tell her to be careful and had talks about it. It was nothing I or anyone could do, she was very unhappy and never sought help. I never had any knowledge before anyone about her departure, me and Diane were told at the same time. Misconceptions about The Supremes – There is always going to be incorrect information with all l of the books about us, whenever I come across misinformation I try to clear it up. The one thing that bothers me is people think we are not friends and they think Diane is a certain way.

We have always been friends even up to today, Florence died being a friend even though certain things had to be said. We are like sisters. My Life As A Supreme book- I kept diaries throughout our entire career, its pretty accurate even though I try not to talk about my feelings so much. I’m a singer but I am also a writer, if I had not written the book, someone else would have. I feel its better for me to say it and get the flack rather than someone else say it who didn’t know what they were talking about. Some of the things hurt me to write but I needed to tell what happened. It is my perspective, we all have our take on what happened and that’s okay and I respect that. I knew people would only want to know about The Supremes so I cut the book in half and cut it off when Diane left. My second booked picked up once Diane left and the book was more about me. I think it was a smart thing to do because at the time, people only wanted to hear about the Supremes and not my story. It ended up coming out as two books about my life, the first book was like a Cinderella story and the second book was after the fairytale was over. It was not very pretty, I had to start all over again and when I look back it was a good thing. I’ve come full scale and I’m very proud of that. Saying goodbye to The Supremes – I said goodbye to The Supremes when Florence left, it was not only hard – it was devastating. I grew up and saw life as it was, I felt devastated that I had to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. We dared to dream when we first started and I had to dare to dream again to see how and where this was going to take me. My second book was called Supreme Faith that was what I had to have. If Flo was gone, then what we had was over. Any one piece that was gone made it incomplete, just the same as when Diane left. I had to find me and start re learning how to sing, I started taking voice lessons and Jean left and I decided to go solo. Favorite Supremes song - It changes, Holland – Dozier – Holland produced some of the best songs in the world. We had 12 number 1’s and 10 of them were produced by them. The songs stand up on their own, they are timeless and the songs are not dated like some of the 50s music. I can sing Reflections now and get more out of it now than I did 20 years ago. I still don’t like Where Did Our Love Go but my favorites change from time to time. Her most recent work – I have a new single called Life’s Been Good To Me, the comments have been great. You can look it up on iTunes or on my website and the CD should be out before the end of the year. This music is the best I’ve done since I’ve been on my own. Last words – You may not be able to change the world, you can change yourself for the better. I think we would have a better generation of people coming up, its very important to pass on good vibes. Dreams do come true,.

TIPS FOR COLLEGE KIDS: Start saving even if it’s $1 per day. Save your pocket change too. You’ll be surprised at how quickly it adds up. Look for student discounts. Lookout for deals on anything and everything such as airline tickets, pizza, books, clothes. Use your resources and the internet, you can always find an array of bargains on there. TIPS FOR RECENT COLLEGE GRADUATES: Use credit cards wisely. They are a good way to establish credit and earn cash rewards but make sure you’re paying off the balance in full every month. If while in school you swiped a little too often and ran up some debt, start paying it off now. Learn about taxes. Educate yourself about taxes and make sure to take advantage of any deductions that will cut your tax bill. Pay particular attention to the student loan interest deductions. TIPS FOR NEWLY LAID OFF OR UNEMPLOYED: Find out right away whether you are entitled to unemployment benefits, and if so, how much. Visit www.dol.gov and click on “unemployment” for information on unemployment benefits and links to your state’s information. Apply immediately to avoid delays. Remember unemployment benefits are taxable as income and if you don’t withhold taxes on them now you could end up with a higher bill later down the road. Make a budget and be frugal. Look at all your expenses and see where you can make changes until your back on your feet. Eating out for example, may seem like a necessity especially if you’re working full time but cooking at home or packing lunches to take with you will help you save money and it’s healthier. Find temporary employment. Now this may not be your first choice but a job is a job and most importantly it can help pay your bills. If you treat this like a ‘real job’ you may even be asked to stay on after your temporary assignment is over. The best part about temp work is that you have the opportunity to experience a variety of jobs and employers without having to make a longterm commitment. - April 28

Tips for Newly Laid off or Unemployed: Assume that you will remain unemployed for longer than you think, and plan accordingly. It has been my experience in the past several years that most people are remaining unemployed for extended periods of time, needing to move for work, or finding work that pays less than their previous employment. Plan appropriately and don’t make assumptions. DO NOT make any major purchases. Defer any and all major cash outlays until after you have secured new employment. I have witnessed MANY clients take their severance pay and go on lavish vacations, buy new cars or boats, or basically use the money for purposes other than everyday living expenses. Remember, your emergency cash savings or severance is IN PLACE of your income, NOT a windfall. Review every aspect of your finances. Question every expenditure. Look to reduce expenses that are large and recurring in nature. For example, can your child go to public school instead of private? Do you really need that 3rd car? How often are you really taking advantage of that country club membership? Are you leasing expensive new cars? Companies go through this periodically when they hit difficult times, and it helps permanently eliminate wasteful spending. Do the same thing with your own personal finances. You can certainly also review the smaller line items in your budget like utilities, cable bills, gym memberships, etc, and you could possibly find some savings there. But by and large, it is the large expenditures that you can really make an impact by reducing or eliminating. - Robert

Live within your means - really understanding what that means and how to build a budget around your income and lifestyle. Cutting out the things that are excessive - gym memberships you Don’t use, Netflix that you don’t watch, tanning memberships in the summer months, etc. Things you overlook, but continuously pay for. Just out of college - review where you live. Does it make sense to live at home, with a bunch of friends, a single roommate or fly solo - what can you realistically afford. Cars - love them or hate them, do you really need one in the city? Sell it and opt for easier transportation (trains, bikes, walking, car sharing, etc.) Living on a limited budget - learn to cook, make a list of items for the market and use the same ingredients multiple nights as it will cut down on costs. Not enough in your paycheck - review some of your insurance. Are you paying for stuff you don’t use (ie. dental) and look at your withholding (might get a huge refund at tax time that you could have spread out over the year to get in your paycheck each week). Trish

I understand the hesitation of moving back with your parents after spending 4 amazing years on your own, however, paying rent and utilities adds up very quickly. Save some money by moving back in with your Mom and Dad. If they do ask you to help out with mortgage payments, at the very least you'll still have access to their refrigerator (buying your own groceries can add up to $100/ week. Going out to eat is even more expensive), and you'll have some of your old furniture in their house already, saving you that $600 for a new sofa. If Mom and Dad is not an option for you, opt for roommates, where you can split the cost of rent, utilities, and even some food. In today's economy, our basic human needs have a high priority over our wants, such as going out to bars and getting massages. However, life can become very dull very quick by completely neglecting our wants- as long as we are young, we must have fun. Save some big bucks by subscribing to deal services like Groupon, Living Social, and Bloomspot. Take advantage of the awesome sales they have to offer without sacrificing your weekend or your paycheck. I was able to book a trip to an all-inclusive resort at the Bahamas for only $100 for 3 nights, got an hour long massage for $35, and got up to 50 or more % off at some really fun restaurants and bars! If it all possible, stop using your credit cards! Don't close them (as it might lower your Credit Score, as I had to learn the hard way), but do pay them off! If you can make more than the minimum payments, by all means, do! On one of my debts that I am in the midst of paying off now, if I was to make the minimum payments only, it would have taken me over 29 years and an extra $20,000 before I got rid of that debt. By adding an extra $100 per month to my payments, I will officially pay the card off within 3 years. - Kira
