Goldyn’s Touch

Here we are inside the pages of my 3 year anniversary issue. I must admit, there were days I didn’t think I would make it. There have been a lot of highs as well as lows, I’ve cultivated great friendships because of this magazine. Whenever I’m having one of those days, I think of you (yes you, don’t you hear me tapping on your screen?). The most motivational thing to be blessed with is a support system and that would be you, my readers. I’ve loved getting your emails from around the world telling me how much you love the magazine. You are also honest with me when things need a little tweak here and there. I truly value all of my readers, advertisers, and general cheerleaders. Without you, I would not have made it this far, and for you I will keep going because I don’t want to let you down. Xposure has truly grown tremendously over the last 3 years in publication. The layouts have advance, the website is more streamlined and I’m consistently looking to make things better. I have almost reached my goal of being at 50 pages by New Year’s Eve, so thankful for that. Alexander Allen is my cover story because I’ve quietly admired his work from afar. We have only spoken by tweets and email and have yet to meet in person but I feel like I know him already. Featured in the Power Moves section is J.D. Davis who has lots of knowledge to share on how new media is affecting marketing and promotions and tips to help improve your strategy. Next On Deck features the soulful Tracy Cruz and the increasingly popular Magoolie Gang. Be sure to follow them on Twitter. Allure features Tiffany Rogers, founder of Feed The Models which is a foundation built to help those with eating disorders. She is very passionate about her cause and so am I. In these pages, we have the exclusive look at Lil Wayne’s TRUKFIT Spring 2013 line from MAGIC 2012. Special thanks to Michael Harris, Brand Manager at TRUKFIT. The whole team there is a gang of talented individuals. More photos from the other events at MAGIC 2012 are featured along with a feature on Heart Clothing Co. based in NY. This whole issue has been a labor of love, dedication, blood sweat and tears and I wouldn’t trade any of it for a second. Thanks to everyone for their support and don’t forget to check out the all new www.xposure365.com and follow @XposureMagazine on Twitter for all the daily updates. Last but not least, I want to dedicate this issue to my nephew DeVonte Morgan who is my motivation and inspiration, and my friends and family. The best is yet to come and won’t it be great? Until next time…………

Tracy Cruz How did you discover music and what was the defining moment that helped you decide to make music your career? I first discovered music through my mother and grandmother. They always sang love songs around the house and I would listen and emulate them when I was two years old. Then when I was five, I heard “Greatest Love of All” sung by Whitney Houston on the radio and I was immediately drawn to the beautifully arranged music, heartwarming lyrics and Whitney’s powerful voice. I couldn’t stop listening to that song! I sang that song everywhere I went and to anyone who would listen. Also my grandfathers would often ask me to sing “Greatest Love of All” and give me money afterwards (smiling). Some of the best first musical memories ever!

Your debut album garnered a lot of recognition, how does Universoul Symphony differ from Feel’osophy? Universoul Symphony is different from Feel’osophy in many ways. The majority of the songs in Feel’osophy have a mellow vibe while the songs in Universoul Symphony have a wide range of musical soundscapes-mid-tempo to upbeat songs to passionate ballads. Also Universoul Symphony is a concept album complete with an intro, interludes, and a finale, whereas Feel’osophy was not. The purpose of Feel’osophy was to showcase songs that evoked different types of emotions-you pick the song you want to listen to based on how you were feeling at that moment while Universoul Symphony is an album that you must listen to from the beginning to the end to grasp the entire concept. Lastly, Universoul Symphony contains more intricate vocal and musical arrangements than Feel’osophy. Tell us about your single Love’s Galaxy and what other singles we can look forward to. There are several love songs out there that display the negative sides of love and I wanted to encourage those who are in relationships/marriages to take it to the next level mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually so I created “Love’s Galaxy”. “Love’s Galaxy” is a place where all lovers go to experience an “elevated” form of love where there is no frustration, stress, pain, doubts or insecurities instead it is filled with a deeper sense of understanding, appreciation, and acceptance. I’m currently working on promoting another single from Universoul Symphony through a new music video. It is a surprise! :) Please stay tuned!

I decided to make music my career in 2005 when my husband/producer Allen Ross and I released a 4-song EP “Illuminate Love”. I received an outpour of love and support through this project so I was completely inspired to turn my “love for music” into a “full-time career”. Also I was strongly moved by a message that I received from a fan via Myspace. She thanked me for creating “Struggle” (a song from my EP “Illuminate Love”) How can the readers find out more about your because she was finally able to cry and let go of her pain. “Struggle” is and your music? http://www.tracycruz.com about following your dreams and not giving up no matter how difficult http://www.facebook.com/tracycruzmusicpage the struggle gets. At that moment, I knew I wanted to continue to create http://www.twitter.com/tracycruzmusic music to change and inspire the lives of others. Last words to readers? For the people who may not have heard your music, how would you Don’t be afraid to live your dreams. Life is too describe your sound? short not to do what you love. Stay persistent and I would describe my sound as Soul music infused with symphonic, elecconsistent. Use your gifts to inspire others. Thank tronic sounds. It is also heavily influenced by Jazz, Gospel, Hip Hop, and you so much for taking the time to read my story. Funk. My music consists of poetic lyrics, expressive singing, and complex Please continue to support and spread the word musical arrangements. It is very similar to the music of Jill Scott, Ledisi, about independent artists. Also much love goes Amel Larrieux, D’Angelo, out to Goldyn P. Smith for the love! 08

How did you discover music and what was the defining moment that helped you decide to make music your career? The group discovered music in many different ways, some recognized it though just the simple ways of growing up in eclectic urban households where music was apart of simple family dinners, some simply only had pop music accessible because of strict parenting and came to know hip hop through being transferred to a public school. The defining moment was when 3/4 of the group decided against returning back to college to seek the benefits of this trivial industry. For the people who may not have heard your music, how would you describe your sound? The sound can be classified as blues hop. It’s meaningful, it’s melancholy and somber, but certain elements are enthused in the songs for the listener to feel many different emotions even though a majority of the music comes from a depressing place. Tell us about the singles Falling Up and Ricki Lake and the story behind the songs. Falling Up came from the group balancing on a proverbial high wire where some members were leaning nonchalantly due to the low expectations, we weren’t very far from the ground after all so failing didn’t completely matter to people. Falling Up is representative of a dark period where we just wanted to make the songs that we could afford to record to be timeless. Ricki Lake is intended to be ignorant for the most part. The beat is very trapstar-ish and aggressive and the normal template for a freestyle in our city is to suffocate the listener with less than clever drug punchlines and “stunting” but instead the song revolves around 90’s nostalgia which seems to be the only thing to gloat about because for the most part we’re not really respected like the people that make the music we focus so hard to differentiate our concepts from. How did you decide to choose your name? What music and projects can we look forward to from you?

The name is just a random term created by a member that was just using MAGOO as an insult for a fellow member and then interrupting the member’s rebuttal by yelling LEE. The name just means corny or lame to simplify, there’s no metaphorical anecdote behind that one at all. The WTFisaMAGoolie mixtape is our latest effort it was released on July 8, 2012 on mediafire and its achieving extremely moderate success but it’s a project that took a long time to get to the fans because of the mindstate of the group and the handicaps of scheduling. The follow up tape is Tape 2. How can the readers find out more about your and your music? We can be found at @WtfisaMAGoolie, @banjoe_kazooie, @xanybrainymag @BAREyMAG @ BigBlackAfrikka Our music pages are Facebook. com/magooliesup, reverbnation.com/magoolies, and soundcloud.com/qsabstrakt and you can tweet any of us for a serious conversation or just to hate on us at anytime, We have nothing better to do, we’ll reply Last words to readers? Thanks To Xposure Magazine for a chance to reach people and for anybody who’s ever downloaded or just listened to our songs and just thought they were absolute trash, we thank you and it drives us to either get better or worse. God bless everybody that’s given us a crappy job so that we could waste money on terrible studios and every DJ that’s denied us airplay because it’s shaping something you could never fathom. Yopper

J.D Davis

He’s the Senior Entertainment Media Specialist for Radio One Atlanta. I was introduced to JD last November, since then we’ve kept a great friendship but never met until last month. He’s always given such great advice, as you will see, and he’s a consummate professional. Ladies and gentlemen – Mr. J.D. Davis……….. A day in the life - I service the accounts for Radio One, helping my clients get the maximum exposure for their marketing and advertising campaign. Coming from a long line of professionals, I got my formal education. I have a Masters in Communications and I have a law degree, my law degree has helped me tremendously. I encourage all of my interns to get the basic foundation so they can bring something to the table. I come from a long line of attorneys, my sister has her own practice and she’s done well. I have expertise in the public relations, marketing and advertising field. I used to work at the Apollo when I was 12 passing out flyers and they would give me $1 for everyone who presented one with my initials. It came to a point where they said it wasn’t lucrative for them because I had everyone coming, they were giving me hundreds of dollars. Fond memories at the Apollo- I used to see Luther Vandross, my favorite was James Brown. Even when James wasn’t performing, her was there. 26

I really gravitated to the locals like Nancy Wilson, I didn’t look at her as a celebrity. She was a local person that was so cool and happened to sing. What I remember most about those days was the people who were really talented; never became well known. We had people on the block who could sing, they didn’t know anything about marketing or promotion. When I got involved with the marketing world, I realized it was a combination of talent, marketing and promotion that was the key. What’s the most common mistake people make with marketing? – I use the analogy of seeing a beautiful nightclub with all marble floors and gold fixtures. When the time comes to see me, they have $2.00 and saying their broke. They give the best rapper in the world $25,000 and they have $5.52 when they want to invite people to come out. It leaves just you and the rapper sitting in the club together with your gold fixtures and marble floors. The people that are the most successful understand consistency with advertisements. People are not just going to go when you tell them to go, but when they are ready they want to know where to go. If you have consistency with a nice inviting message will work. Technology has changed the game, but with all the choices it can be very confusing and become expensive

. I like to advise people on what works and it’s a combination of mediums, sponsorships are another way. Everybody is a rapper with jewelry and wrapped vans but the 50,000 people we have listening don’t know nothing about you. How new media has affected his team – It’s helped tremendously we have a great web department, shoutout to Brett, Glen and Phil. They are phenomenal and make things come alive; we are a one stop shop. You don’t need to have anyone else to do an email blast, we have a text club, online streaming as well as live streaming. I keep young people around me like my intern Michelle and my children who keep me current, that’s really important. Typical day – I get home at 4am from the specialty event after eating at the diner with a select group of friends. I wake up around 9, get to the station between 10 and 11, execute all of the promotions I’ve been able to secure. From 5-7pm I deal with the children and all of their needs, 8-10 community service which I do everyday. I have a message of hope I share on an everyday basis which is spiritually based. Around 10, I go home and change clothes for the third time and go out to all of my events meeting new clients and servicing established clients. I have a driver, that way I can tweet and check emails etc. My kids are my top priority in life.. I really gravitated to the locals like Nancy Wilson, I didn’t look at her as a celebrity. Headliner You are known today, as an International Image Director. How would you define that title and for those who an unaware, how would you describe Transformers? As an International Image Director, I’m responsible for creating, implementing and/or executing the image (brand strategies and/or styling) of my clients, which includes, celebrities, Fortune 500 brands, CEOs and high level executives, and everyday people, globally. Transformers initially started out to solely provide styling services. Throughout the past twelve years, it has evolved to also include creative, image and music direction, along with, procurement for investors and advertising consulting. You’ve worked with so many high profile clients since starting Transformers in 2001, what would you say has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout the years? I’ve been extremely blessed to have amassed an extensive and impressive amount of high profile clients throughout my twelve year career. There are several huge lessons that I’ve learned over the years. Especially, throughout the last three to seven years and they are listed below. - Know who you are as an individual, as a professional and lastly, as a company/brand. - DO NOT take no as answer from anyone, if you wholeheartedly, believe in your dream, vision and goals. - DO NOT allow anyone to disrespect you, celebrities and clients included, in any form, whatsoever. You allow it to happen once and it will only continue and escalate. - For an introvert, such as myself, I had to learn to ask and negotiate, for not only what I’ve earned and deserved, but also, for what I wanted. This is an especially crucial lesson to learn, if you don’t have anyone negotiating on your behalf. - Know and be somewhat okay (NOT that it’s right) with the fact that some people, will steal your ideas. Not too long ago, I saw a celebrity steal my entire business strategy (presently, still in use) and use it for himself and their significant other. How wack is that?! That was a first! That’s when I knew I had to not only part ways with that entire camp, but it was also a stronger confirmation that my ideas are gold mines. The primary lesson I learned from that was, when you have an idea, knock that motherf***** out the park on round #1, so, that if anyone even dares to jock you, everyone will already know who blazed that particular trail.

Fashion - to the outside world is seen as such a cutthroat industry, what was the defining moment that made you decide this was the industry for you? I’ve always loved fashion. There are three defining moments for me. 1. From interning at Marie Claire magazine and at Donna Karan International, I knew a fashion position would be perfect for me. 2. Having been a stylist assistant on my first shoot, with Pink, an unknown in the industry at that time, I knew that a career in fashion styling was the answer. 3. Lastly, from having relied solely on clients in the past, in addition to, the decline of the traditional music industry, plus, the two recessions, I knew that I had to take the time to brainstorm and come up with various viable solutions to sustenance, and to never having to experience any of these situations again. Gratefully, I have successfully done so.

What are the biggest misconceptions you find people have about Image Directors? .

Within the present and upcoming generations, people easily label themselves with “creative director” titles, and an assortment of other director titles, thinking that their “bosses,” and that creating and styling dynamic, indelible images, are easy to achieve. Not only that, then, they have the audacity to think, talk and act out, as if they’re better than you, because you may not be in the limelight or doing what they deem as popular today (your own reality show, high social media #s, etc.., which aren’t, nor ever will be, my focus). To be great takes time and just because you put in time, doesn’t automatically qualify you as being great either. You have to be an original, to have or continue to change the game, put out consistent, high quality art, not resting on your achievements, because there is always someone who “think” they can replace you. My focus never has been and never will be, to be in the limelight. If that was the case, that’s what I would’ve pursued as my career and succeeded at. You’ve worked with Takashi Murakami which is huge, I’m sure you were honored and excited. How did that opportunity originate and how has it influenced your work? Working with Takashi Murakami was a huge honor and without question, one of my biggest career highlights. I’ve been

29

and continue to be blessed! 99% of my business, that opportunity came from a referral, a global, luxury brand, that I did a lot of business with in the past. This is why I pride myself on giving a 1000% on each project that I commit to. In essence, that is what the Alexander Allen brand stands for. You never know who is watching and thinking about you for another potential client and/or project. Working with Takashi Murakami came at a point in my life, where I’d decided that I would never rely my business, solely on a client, ever again, and to restructure my business, in such that, if a client suddenly decides not to grind, like I do, that my business will still thrive. Takashi was my first client, as an international image director. He was so thoroughly impressed with my ideas and vision, that he also hired me to style his other two artists, Chiho and Mister. Yes, working with Takashi had a huge influence on my work and highly impacted the men’s fashion industry. Prior to working with Takashi in 2008, men’s fashion had evolved, but I still wanted to push the envelope some more. Takashi is known for his wildly, colorful art and I wanted to display that in his wardrobe for the Brooklyn Ball, hosted by Louis Vuitton. I’d decided to wardrobe him in a cool suit, but to be playful with his shirt, bow-tie and footwear. My style, since high school has been, what I’d then coined (and still do), sporty chic. I love being super comfortable, but always high end, and that’s the direction I took Takashi in. Takashi wore a Brooks Brothers’ navy suit, paired with white Louis Vuitton sneakers, with navy blue fat laces. At that time, no one was really wearing suits with sneakers and most definitely, not with fat laces. That was my personal tweaking. I opted for a blue and white polka dot Ben Sherman shirt, mixed with a Brooks Brother’s striped orange bow-tie. Everyone was completely blown away by the mix of patterns and colors. It had never been done prior to then. Once he hit the red carpet and the images went around the world, it became a trend that you still see today.

What inspires your creativity and can you share some of your process when you start to work with a new client? E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G inspires my creativity. The good, the bad and the uncategorized. :D Superstars who inspire me: Prince, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey. These are my mainstays. I loved them all since I was a kid. The newest members in my elite club are: Kanye West and Lady GaGa. All six of these artists, inspire me from A-Z. Individually and collectively, they’ve shown me what being a maverick means. They’ve all changed the game in such a monumental fashion. Talent, O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L-I-T-Y, hard work ethic, consistently breaking new ground, business acumen, etc.. All forms of entertainment inspire me also, with tours, being paramount. It’s one thing to be extremely talented, but to visually express your talent, in a unique way, is an entirely different animal. Unfortunately, I can’t share with you any of my processes with working with any new clients. That’s what separates me from that ever increasing stylists pack. However, what I can share is that listening and taking heed to your clients’ needs are crucial, to not only a successful job, but to a lengthy career. Can you share any tips for the men and women readers they can use everyday? MEN: a subtle, but pleasantly memorable, yet, uncommon fragrance, will take you very far. WOMEN: always be a lady, at all times. By doing so, you will always be approached, and treated, as such. What projects are you currently working on and what future projects can we look forward to? I’m elated to provide Xposure magazine with the exclusive on “my round # 4,” in the entertainment industry. Currently, I’m the creative director of the newly launched, online television network, ChicRebellion.tv.

In addition to, being the creative director, I’m also the image director and music director for the debuting five television series. I’m also, an investor and advertising consultant for the network. Lastly, I have a three series production deal with the network. TRIUMPHANT!!! GOD IS AMAZING! I’m blessed and grateful! Simultaneously, styling three television series, consisting of three different women, in addition to, creative directing a network, editing footage, sourcing and selecting music for each series, creating and planning the launch of the network and launch party, while still freelancing on other gigs, has resulted in this being, easily, the hardest, yet, most rewarding work that I’ve ever done, so far. This is my master class, for real, for real. Thankfully, I’ve accomplished countless successes in the past, but my best work is taking place right now. Again, I’ve been, and continue to create, and stay, in my own lane.As of right now, ALL of my future work can presently be seen on ChicRebellion.tv. What advice would you share with anyone looking to start in the fashion industry? For anyone looking to start in the fashion industry, I suggest the following: - Identify what your passion is. - Pursue it. - Develop a creative and business outline on how you plan to achieve your success. - Then, GO!!! How do people find out more information about you and all you have going on? (Twitter, website, Facebook etc) I know that social media is a big deal in today’s culture, but personally, it’s not a huge focus of mine. I don’t have the time. With that being said, I only have Twitter and I can be located at @ALEXANDER_IID. The peer pressure is rapidly increasing though, with requests for me to open accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Pintrest, etc.. We’ll see!  Website: www.AlexanderAllensWorld.com

Allure

I started Feed The Models last year which is when I decided to do my fashion show. The vision I have for my show is so ridiculously over the top. I’ve turned what was supposed to be a fashion show into a foundation, I want everything to be legit. I want to take the rest of the year to promote the company, build the awareness and do the big events next year. With Feed The Models, I did a lot of research on treatment centers but there is nothing that deals with models. I’ve seen groups for athletes, women, children. An eating disorder starts mentally before the physical comes into play. Models deal with those issues plus another set of issues like staying the size you are to keep your career going. There is a whole set of issues that need to be acknowledged when dealing with models. Tiffany’s definitive moment – I went home for Christmas and I was telling my mom about my fashion show and she encouraged my idea and gave me new ones. I started to tweet and ask everyone what they thought about the concept and I received a lot of feedback. Once that happened, models started to contact me and everyone encouraged me. 32

At that point I knew I had to go bigger and it couldn’t be just one fashion show. Where on the road of success will we find Feed The Models? – Within the next 5-7 years, I would like to have a treatment center that focuses on models with eating disorders. I also want to help teach children to have a healthy mindset and body image before they get into the industry. I want to have workout things to offer as well as nutritionists. Its going to end up being a lot of subdivisions but Feed The Models is the priority. What’s next for Tiffany? – I’m working on a lot promo things including calendars, buttons, as well as other promo items. We will be doing events in the next few months as well. For more information – www.feedthemodels.org its an all new site, if you have any of the Feed The Models promotional stuff you can send pictures of yourself with it to feedthemodelsinfo@gmail. com. We’re on Facebook as Feed The Models and Twitter www.twitter.com/Feed_The_Models and Instagram. Last words – Count your blessings, not your blemishes. At the end of the day, love yourself no matter what.

Currency Matters

Facebook stock opened on May 18 at $42.05 and fluctuated between $45 and $38 and dropped even further $19.43 as time progressed. Zuckerberg recently addressed the news reports and critics who think he should enter the mobile market “We’re going in the opposite direction from companies that are building their own phones, such as Google and Apple, he said. “We want to build a system that’s as deeply integrated as possible into every device people use.” When asked if the stock prices affected the morale at Facebook he replied “It doesn’t help”. Zuckerberg seemed confident “Facebook has not been an uncontroversial company in the past; it’s not like this is the first up and down we’ve had.”

As part of the $25 billion foreclosure abuse settlement, Chase is sending thousands of borrowers letters offering to refinance their mortgages to lower rates or reduce the principal owed. As part of the $25 billion mortgage settlement that was struck between the nation’s five biggest banks and the state attorneys general and federal government, Chase had pledged $4.2 billion in mortgage relief for tens of thousands of borrowers. Under the settlement, banks get more credit for modifications that are completed in the first year so the banks are trying to move quickly. reworks the loan terms and simply lays out the new payment plan in a letter to its borrowers. The borrower sees the new rate, or how much principal has been taken off their balance, and what their new payments will be. All they have to do is sign the letter approving the new terms and send it back to the bank.
