FINALS COME EARLY Casterton Sandford & North Gambier battle in season defining contest NORTH GAMBIER v CASTERTON SANDFORD SOUTH GAMBIER v WEST GAMBIER EAST GAMBIER v MILLICENT
GAME PREVIEW North Gambier v Casterton Sandford With two weeks to go and effectively one spot up for grabs, North Gambier and Casterton Sandford know their season could hinge on an hour and a half of football this Saturday. After West Gambier’s win over East Gambier last weekend, it has effectively sealed one of the two remaining finals berths and fittingly the other two contenders will face off at Vansittart Park. This time the Cats and Tigers must head in the right direction to take themselves to the promised land. Currently both sides have 5-9 win loss records, but North occupies fourth spot due to its superior percentage. This makes the road trip even more important for the Cats, who are still licking their wounds from a 90-point defeat to South Gambier whilst wearing their heritage guernseys. The Victorians could not contain the Demons’ fast style and must be able to mount a fightback against a Tigers team with plenty of superstars of their own. The midfield battle between Nick McInerney and Dylan Ayton will be one to watch, while the likes of Matt Killey, Tom Foster and recent debutant Elwood Geary will need to find a way to slow down the rampaging Sam Stafford. Both teams can draw to previous one-on-one battles for inspiration, but this third and final battle of the home and away season carries so much more weight. The Cats can turn to 2019 as inspiration when they just knocked out the Demons in a sudden-death clash with a big second half, while North only just avoided a similar fate last year.
THOMAS MILES - SE VOICE
Many greats of the Western Border world will be at the “Kennel” as the club celebrates the premiership reunions of its champion sides from the 1970’s and 80’s. In 1983 East overcame Millicent the old Dogs will be watching the modern day Pups try to take the fight to an improving Saints side, boosted by the returns of Clint Gallio and Tom Hutchesson which will be no easy task. A fortnight away from football did the Saints no harm as they resumed their form to completely outplay a hungry North Gambier team. With only Frazer Bradley on SA Country duty, Millicent coach Clint Gallio said this week is all about not disrupting the team’s flow towards finals. “We will just keep ticking along as a group and make sure we are right over the next few weeks,” he said. “We want to give ourselves the best chance of having a full strength squad with the finals creeping up on us pretty quickly.” Although the likes of Shaun Lock and Keenan Dwyer showed some spark last week, the challenge of slowing Millicent’s delivery to Dylan Bromley will loom large. South Gambier v West Gambier The sides occupying first and third on the ladder will head to Blue Lake Sports Park keen to continue some strong patches of form. For the Demons the equation is simple, keep doing what it has done for the last eight games which is fun teams ragged.
They were devastating last week at Island Park, leaving the Cats for dust to win by 90 points. Although key forward Brodie Foster was held back by sickness, young gun Mitch Sims stepped up to the plate booting six goals to East Gambier v Millicent There is not as much on the line at McDonald ensure South always has scoring firepower. Park when East Gambier takes on Millicent, With coach Brayden Kain and key halfback player Todd Reid both set to miss this but there will still be a good vibe.
F.L. weekend to represent SA Countr y at Adelaide Oval. But with so much talent around the club, South should be able to fill their key positions and make life very difficult for their opponents. Kain said a test awaits against a side playing strong football. “West will be extremely challenging,” he said. “Maintaining this momentum for us will be our expectation but we will certainly be prepared for them to show some fight. “The pointy end of the year always brings added pressure to see which teams are the real deal and we are excited to get back to Blue Lake Sports Park and put on a good show.” For the Roos, after wrapping up a tough scrap for a finals berth, they now have their sights set on causing some trouble with the big boys prior to September. During patches West has given South some headaches and assistant coach Nathan Lewis wants to see a more sustained effort. “Although we (West) lost both games by seven goals, a lot of their work was done in a short amount of time, so we have been pretty competitive against South,” he said. “They have some firepower, but I think our backline is a lot more settled than the last times we have played them. “Our goal is to challenge in the finals and we do not want to put in a stinker this week and we do not want to have that going into finals, so we have to plan well b e c a u s e i t ’s a n important game. “ N o e xc u s e s a n d hopefully we can be better for longer and take the fight across four quarters.”

North Gambier Yellow & Black Last week we ventured to Millicent, well those of us that weren’t in QLD or at a concert. The Under 14’s had one of their closer games, going down by only 2 goals. This team deserves a victory and we hope that can happen in the next few weeks. Awards were given to Sam Baron, Jackson Driver, Connor Lunnay, Cooper Harris & Reid Hamilton.
The Under 16’s had a terrific win albeit against an undermanned opponent. Credit to Brett Shepherdson who as coach is getting this group gelling at the right time of the year. His side is even ly b alan ced . Best p layers included Deacon Ilsley with 3 goals, Cooper Turner, Intha Phutt, Alex Bruce and Brodie Anderson. Coach Bryan was elated with his side’s performance kicking 5 goals to nothing in the last quarter to steal the win from Millicent in the Under 18’s game. This game was highly contested for 4 quarters and played in good spirits with both teams playing 16 aside due to player unavailability. Best players were Tyler Harris, Jamie Williamson, Reece McLaughlin, Jordan Millard, and Zayne Young. The B Grade were really affected more than usual (if that’s possible?) with player availability and come up against a strong Millicent outfit. Tim managed to find 3 new players at late notice and must be thanked for putting their hands up to play. Better players Izaak Rosier, Tim Young, Danny
V
Poyner, Tom Flett and first gamer Toby Burner.
Congratulations to Darcy Arthurson who debuted in the Seniors. The game itself didn’t go to plan for Coach Hardy. Millicent was too slick with ball movement and delivery to their key forward. Better players were hard to find but mentions to Sam Stafford who is in a purple patch of form against numerous opponents many weeks with 6 goals. Bradley Adams, Nick McInerney, and Mitch Kelton. This week we welcome back Casterton Sandford to Vansittart Park, we also welcome back all those involved in the 2012 Senior and Reserves Premiership sides for their 10-year reunion. To d a y a l s o m a r k s M a t t h e w Chapman’s 400 senior club game. An amazing achievement for our highly decorated loyal servant of the club. Chappy joins the illustrious club of now of 2 players to have played 400 senior club games. Chappy is still a fierce competitor and will always be remembered for tough hard approach to the game and his selflessness as teammate. Just a heads up that we are hosting the grand final this year, so don’t make any plans for the 3rd of September 2022. Hopefully we both playing and cooking bbqs etc on the day. Thanks to our major sponsors, Stuckey Electrical Contracts and KFC.

The Seniors looked great in the heritage jumper, but looks don't matter much when the contest is on, a 90 point loss was not the way reunion day was supposed to go. Better players were Tom Foster, Matt Killey, Jack Thompson, Adam The under 14s put up a good show McKinnon and Hamish McCrae 3 against the ladder leaders but fell goals. behind in the second half to go down by 5 goals. Today is a turning point for the Better players were Brody Pratt, club, we must win today if our Connor Stephens 2 goals, Archie senior teams are to play finals, so L a n e , J a g g e r G e a r y, N a t e grab your picnic rug and get out Longhurst and Jack Rhook. and cheer like you've never cheered before Cat fans, CARN The under 16s had a hard time CATS. hitting the scoreboard but would be very proud of their defensive Sunday is Market Day at Island efforts. Our last away game for the year and it was a special day for Casterton Sandford as they celebrated with a reunion of the 1990 premiership. It was fantastic to see so many people that we played against and e n j oye d s o c i a l i s i n g w i t h afterwards.
Our U16 team has as much talent as any I've seen at South Gambier and although the Casterton Sandford boys battled hard the final score was 106-0. Best players were Kobe Bannon, Jared Kuhl, Addison Sims, Lachlan Ray and Sam Domaschenz.
We weren't able to offer Casterton Sandford any joy on the field with 4 wins out of 4 for South Gambier. It might be a tough season for the current East Gambier A Grade side, but the club will be saluting its glory days in a mega reunion at McDonald Park during this weekend’s home clash with Millicent. Living legends from the premiership sides of 1972, 73, 75, 76, 82 and 83 will be reuniting at the “Kennel” and sharing many fascinating stories from a golden period of Western Border football. One of the most famous figures from the Bulldogs’ most successful era is premiership winning playing coach Gary Lazarus and he cannot wait to make a rare, but special appearance at his former club. “It has been a long time,” he said. “When I come here to see family I see some of the boys, but those who have moved away have probably not seen each other for around 30 years. “That will be the great part coming back as a club and it will be a good day.” The WBFL was thriving in the seventies with many VFL and SANFL stars coming into the region including Lazarus himself. Before he arrived at the “Kennel” the forward had become one of Fitzroy’s top players, being the struggling club’s leading goal kicker in four of his eight seasons with the highlight kicking four majors in the “Miracle Match” against Geelong in 1963. Amazingly all this was achieved after Lazarus had overcome Polio, the infectious disease that paralyzed many kids during the middle of the 20th century. Fortunately, he was able to recover from the disease and start playing football aged 13 and just four years later he found himself playing against the greats in the VFL. By 1971 East was looking for a leader and the club approached retired Fitzroy coach Bill Stevens, but he knocked it back for family reasons and suggested Lazarus instead. Despite the then 25-year-old having never coached a side before he jumped at the chance. “I had only ever played footy, so went in blindfolded, but I just had to trust my ability,” he said. “When I did the interview East was a very professional club with good people which made me feel comfortable. “My first wife and I decided we liked the country area and there were some changes coming at Fitzroy which was not stable, so I thought the time was right and took the chance.”
crushing grand final win over North Gambier and Lazarus said it was down to the club’s organic growth. “I think we had finished sixth the year before (I arrived) and we lost around eight players, so I just backed the locals and young ones coming through,” he said. “They fitted into senior football easily because they had good knowledge and I just had to implement what I wanted. “We were runners-up in the first year which was pleasing and we were more driven in 1972 because of that. “We played North Gambier who had lost five of their best players in the grand final, but they are always an unknown so they still put up a good fight. “But we played to our plans and were too good and the win got the boys and the entire club really motivated to be successful.” This win lit a fuse for the Bulldogs, who went on their most successful run ever winning four flags in five years. A fast start pushed East to glory in a high-scoring 138-115 thriller against South Gambier in 1973, but this win was far from certain according to Lazarus. “When you start off well sometimes a little bit of complacency comes,” he said. “South started getting the ball out of the centre and we could not stop their run for a while. “But we stepped up in the last quarter and everyone was on the same page to get the win.” Back-to-back success followed in 1975 and 76, which cemented the club as a powerhouse. “We were a hard team and had lots of height from full back to full forward,” Lazarus said. “We started to attack from the half back line and through the centre where a lot of clubs used to sit back a bit. “It was a big effort from everybody with Zig Golebiowski, Noel Doody, Peter Stringer, Tracy Braidwood and many others who gave us a great balance.”
After lifting four premiership cups, Lazarus gave up the coaching gig and continued on as a player until 1978. He then spent two years as a playing coach for Millicent before hanging up the boots in 1980. But the coaching bug bit him again just three years later as he returned to the top job at McDonald Park and enjoyed immediate success as a non-playing coach with the Bulldogs outscoring the Demons by 37 points after a 5goal bag from Kevin Harris. Another flag followed a year later when East The Fitzroy star had an immediate impact on the edged out Lazarus’ former side the Saints then team, pushing the Bulldogs to the big dance in led by Richard Hill in a tight decider at Vansittart the first year, only to fall just short against West Park. Gambier. “The 1983 team was one of the easiest to coach But the loss inspired a determined East team to a
MILES because no one backed off and they all did the work,” Lazarus said. “It was a local team that played a good brand of football and we were lucky to have Gorden Milosevic in the ruck, while Kevin Harris and Mick Wood were great rovers kicking 40 goals each. “Them and other players like the Doody’s, Ransom’s and Dempsey’s all combined really well.” Lazarus continued to coach for another two years before closing a historic chapter at East Gambier in 1985. Despite Fitzroy trying to snatch him back at one point, the champion forward has nothing, but happy memories from his time in the WBFL, which he believed were the most productive of his career. “I enjoyed my entire time there with every aspect of the club fantastic,” he said. “At the end of 1976 Fitzroy asked me to come back to Melbourne and coach the reserves, but I did not go for family reasons which is the only regret I have in football because who knows where you could have ended up. “But my first three years at East were the best three years of footy I played.” The stories from the five premiership sides will start flowing tomorrow night from 6pm at the club before they reconvene at 12pm on Saturday for the round 14 clash between East and Millicent.

East Gambier Red & Black Well last week against west was a tough one with the A grade missing out on there 2nd win the win less U18s going down by a point but the hardest was forfeiting the B grade. Apologies to West Gambier for that, but we can only look forward now. U14s got the job done against a much improved West side from last round best players were Lachlan Legray, Jarvi Mee, Ryan Angelino, Evan Clark, Brodie Versteegn and Noah Spooner. U16s had a strong 1st half and looked like they were going to run away with it but West fought back in the 2nd half and we just held on best players were Ky McCracken, Angus Clarke, Angus McKinnon, Sam Couldrey, Trae Wilke and Jarvi Mee.

for the going down by a point best players were Tom Bignell, Angus Clarke, Riley Flamank, Sam Couldrey, Ky McCracken and Ethan Telfer Scott.
Seniors was an up and down contest we went into 3 quarter time up and we couldn't keep up in the last quarter going down. This week is our last home game of the year against Millicent and we are celebrating the 72,73,75,76 82 83 seniors 72 & 73 Reserves and 74 thirds premiership sides and everyone involved in those era's so hopefully see alot old faces from back in the day enjoy some story telling. Red and black ball and auction night August 13th so we need everybody to get along for our major fundraiser for the year going to be a great night.

Congratulations Frazer Bradley on making the SA State Country Team, great reward for a fantastic season so far. All the best for the match against WA at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The U14’s started the day off on the main oval with a win. Campbell Hateley was the only multiple goal kicker with 2, while better players were Alannah Pratt, Liam Cawood and Teej Lawlor.
The Rezzies moved the ball against North with remarkable skill and precision. Players were working hard to create space, put pressure on ball carriers and push back defensively. Cohesion seems to be developing, with better awareness and understanding between the players, despite being undermanned. Digga and Tilley kicked 5 each. It was a great team effort, hopefully pleasing the 2002 Reserve Premiership players in attendance.
There was some great football played on the back oval across the morning. In the 12E’s Owen and Jax kicked 2 each and Frankie 1. Award winners were Tu l l y Ro b i n s o n ( M a c ca s ) , Hunter Hughes (Fasta Pasta), Kobe McGrath (Chocolate) and Richard (Bakers Delight).
Bomma, not to be upstaged, kicked 9 goals in the Seniors. They came out and took control from start to the finish. The players' conviction and commitment to create space, push into it and transfer the passage of play with a high level of skill is a real spectacle for supporters. Their defensive efforts clogged up North’s space and hampered their game style. A solid four quarter effort. The U18’s went down in a close one, North kicking away with the breeze in the final quarter. Alex Wez kicked 3 goals and Jaxon Cushion 2. Better players were Austin Fuller, Jackson Dean and Patrick Jennings. An undermanned U16 team suffered a big loss at the hands of North. Harry Gibbs kicked 2 goals to be named best while other better players were Jackson Dean and Jackson Bowden.
For the 12C’s Brax kicked 3 (plus 2 for North), Arlie 2 and singles to Colby, Raff, Max, Blayke and Tyler. Award winners were Tyler Ryan (Maccas), Blayke Koehne (Maccas) and Lacey Sunderland (Footy Cards). The kids loved having Bomma out doing the umpiring and I think they may have inspired his 9 g o a l p e r fo r m a n c e i n t h e Seniors. The 12A’s had another good win with Ryder L and Pacey kicking 3 each and Levi 2. Award winners were Levi Robbins (Maccas), Ryder Lindner (Fasta Pasta) and Brax Thomas (Bakers Delight) with Pacey and Oakley the other better players. Back to the club tonight for our major function of 2022, the Saints Ball. A handful of tickets still remaining if you are looking for a great night out.

WITH A WITNESS TO THEIR LIVES Saluting the champions: GARY LAZARUS (part 1) Highly decorated WBFL player/coach EAST ‘GRAND SLAM’ RECORD IN 1972 AUTHOR’S NOTE: This weekend - Saturday, July 29 - East Gambier will hold a reunion to celebrate several East premierships including 1972 (50 years ago) and 1982 (40 years ago). As a lead-up to those celebrations I have put together a two-part series on East’s greatest coach Gary Lazarus. IT says much about East Gambier captain-coach and all-round champion Gary Lazarus that he stayed and played more than 200 league games with the Bulldogs. There is little doubt he was East Gambier’s most decorated player and coach and in the 1979 Western Border Football League season he achieved his 200th league game at the “Kennel”. This in itself speaks volumes of Lazarus’ dedication to East Gambier because few other coaches who have come to the league have stayed to achieve such a feat. His long service to the club was so highly regarded that to celebrate his 200th game East marked the occasion with a planned gala day, starting with a sponsor’s luncheon, then, fo l l o w i n g t h e a f t e r n o o n ’s g a m e , t h e celebrations were to continue that evening in the East clubrooms. The fact Lazarus was able to achieve his 200th game in just nine seasons is quite remarkable and indicates his durability and the fact that in those nine seasons he missed just two matches with injury. Of course during those nine seasons East were regulars in the finals and it is important to remember that the 1970s were perhaps the greatest era of the WBFL, with the evenness of the competition and the number of highly regarded VFL, SANFL and top regional players being enticed here to play. This, alongside some of the top young players coming up through club ranks, made it not just the greatest era but also the toughest. Along the way Lazarus became one of the most decorated players and playing captain-coaches in WBFL history. He came to East in 1971 as a 25-year-old from Fitzroy where he came up through the Thirds and went straight into the VFL league side and never played Reserves. He became one of the Lions “young guns” and played a number of
GREENWOOD
seasons as a forward. He played more than 100 league games with the Lions, topping the club’s leading Lazarus as captain-coach for the next two goal-kicking in 1963, 65, 66 and 67, kicking a seasons. After that coaching stint Lazarus was back at career high 39 goals in 1966. McDonald Park as chairman of selectors and virtually assistant coach to Ron Beattie and After signing with East Gambier and losing the helped East win the 1982 premiership. first grand final against West Gambier in 1971 he knew he had work to do, although he had Beattie left prematurely early into his second brought in several 18 and 19 year-olds in that term as coach and returned to Melbourne and first year but they benefited from the early Lazarus took over and coached East to a introduction to league ranks and some would remarkable 1983 premiership. play major roles in premierships during the next He stayed on to coach East for another few years before finally retiring at the end of 1985. decade for the Bulldogs. In 1972 Lazarus etched his name in WBFL history when he helped East take out the “grand slam”. The club was minor premiers, won the senior and reserves flags and Lazarus as captain-coach won the WBFL Medal and was the league’s leading goalkicker. That “grand slam” had never been achieved before or since in the WBFL.
At the “Kennel” Lazarus remains an institution today in 2022, even though it is now more than 37 years since he was in charge. His record is remarkable and ex-players still stay in contact with Lazarus who now lives in Queensland and speak highly of what he did for them, not just as players but the way he guided them in many facets of life.
In his first six years as captain-coach Lazarus took East to premierships in 1972, 73, 75, 76 and were runners-up in 71, 74. He later was nonplaying coach of East’s 1983 premiership win and runner-up in 1985. He won the club’s best and fairest awards in 1972, 74 and 76 and runner-up in 1971. He also excelled at inter-league level and was coach of the WBFL side in 1973, 74, 75, 77 and 78.
For me, he was a coach I loved to watch in action. It was never dull when he was in charge and he pulled some off the most amazing pregame and on-field changes which often turned a game, but it was his pre-match planning and tactics which put him at the highest level. His record stands tall in WBFL history as one of the great champions of our time.
After defeating Imperials in the 1976 grand final, time was up for Lazarus as East playing coach and he stepped down. South’s Jeff Arthur was appointed as captaincoach in 1977 but when a health issue forced Arthur to step down East appointed Les McKinnon as non-playing coach and Lazarus decided to continue as a player at McDonald Park. After a spell as coach he continued as a player in 1977 and 78 but came back in 1979 to take charge once more as captain-coach. At 33 years of age Lazarus prepared for his 200th game and the expectations were that he would coach again in 1980 and take the Bulldogs into the 80s. Only trouble was, in one of the greatest coups in WBFL history, Millicent pounced when East decided – rather controversially - it wanted to go in a different direction and look for a younger coach, and the Saints swooped, and signed

MATCH REPORTS CASTERTON SANDFORD V SOUTH GAMBIER It all came down to a strong opening half that ensured South Gambier took the points against Casterton Sandford to keep their slim finals hopes alive. On the back of significantly more supply, the Demons were able to build a 15 goal half me lead and that was enough with the second half a much more even affair. The underrated South mid court had a huge influence on the contest as Megan Reid and Tully McShane drove hard through the centre third and hit the circle hard, delivering with precision. Ruby Richter also made the defensive wing her own with some cri cal turnover ball that ensured Lara Munro and Alyssa Duncan were given plenty of scoring opportuni es. The duo ne ed 33 from 42 in the opening half and were it not for the accuracy of the Cats shoo ng combina on of Ivy Lane and Madalene Cleary, who converted 18 from 21, the half me scoreline could have been much worse. The Cats owned the third quarter and reduced the 15 goal half me deficit to only seven at the last change. Coach Jodie Humphries rejigged the defensive line, moving Tessa Marra to goal defence, teaming with Ebany Jarrad in the circle, and moved Charlo e Rice out to the defensive wing. The efforts of that back three saw the scoring opportuni es diminish for the Demons and as Makayla Hutchins and Phoebe Carlin started to find the circle’s edge more easily, the score started to flow. Lane was the main target and she ne ed 13 from 14 to ensure the Cats were s ll in the hunt going into the last. But the strong response from the home side seemed to spark the South defensive line into ac on and while the accuracy was s ll there from Lane and Cleary, they just didn’t get enough ball as Richter, Ellie Bouchier and Mykaela Thiele played with be er intensity and denied easy access to the Cats shooters. Munro and Duncan also rewarded those efforts, conver ng 16 from 17 as South ended up with a 17 goal victory.
WEST GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER East Gambier entered the weekend’s clash with West Gambier having found some strong form and having enjoyed having their preferred star ng seven at their disposal and the reigning premiers would have been keen to test t h e m s e l v e s a ga i n s t o n e o f t h e 2 0 2 2 compe on benchmarks. But the Roos were ready and they put in a strong opening half to ensure East were all too aware that West was ready to break its premiership drought. It was an 11 goal lead for West at the half and that blew out to 21 by the final whistle, with the third quarter arguably the most dominant as West won it 15-6 to put the result beyond doubt. Jade Ri er and Amy Cram con nue to loom as a tough defensive combina on and to keep a side to six goals was impressive to say the least. The story of the match was really supply – West Gambier generated 74 opportuni es and East only 53 and the accuracy ba le was won by the Roos as well. Zoe Malseed had her best game for the season, making life tough for the East feeders, genera ng some important touches and also playing a role in transi on with her strong drives and accurate passing and the crea vity of Lisa McGregor out the front of Sarah Ri er was also cri cal in the comprehensive victory. One of the match ups of the contest was West’s Tara Bryant and East’s Emily Hunter in the centre and it was intriguing as they ran hard, contested strongly and both played pivotal roles for their team. Both sides would have been happy with their defensive efforts – it was one of the lower scoring contests for the season – but while West s ll found ways to score, while East has some work to do at the offensive end of the court and that will no doubt come as they keep their preferred combina on on court for the final two minor rounds and then the finals. Sarah Lock played a similar crea ve role for East that McGregor did for West as she u lised her well med front cuts, strong baseline drives and accurate finishing to great effect, with Hunter as influen al as ever for the Bulldogs but there is some work to do to keep the premiership defence on track.
DENTON’S
MILLICENT V NORTH GAMBIER North Gambier has ba led player unavailability all season and at the weekend, showed their best is well and truly good enough with the Tigers’ preferred star ng seven hi ng the court for the first me in weeks. The Tigers headed to McLaughlin Park to take on the Saints and returned home with a share of the points a er they rallied from a three quarter me deficit to force a draw. North started strongly and led by two goals at the first break and it certainly sparked the Saints into ac on. Lisa Duldig moved into the centre and Georgia Clarke to the defensive wing, and the slick ball movement of Millicent was on full show, with Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena combining for 21 from 22 to turn that deficit into a three goal lead. The shoo ng was just as outstanding from Caroline Wakefield and Macey Griffith who shot a perfect 16 straight. The arm wrestle con nued in the third as both sides looked to move the ball quickly and safely into the hands of their respec ve accurate shoo ng combina ons and at the final change, the home side had a five goal buffer. The Tigers weren’t done with, though, and from a defensive perspec ve it was their best quarter, denying easy ball movement and limi ng the scoring opportuni es for the Saints and while they con nue to get the ball into the hands of Wakefield and Griffith at the other end, North con nued to reduce the deficit and ended up with the 62-all draw. There is no doubt the Tigers defensive combina on of Mel Renko and Zahra Crough will test opposi on shooters if North, as expected, forces its way back into the top four, while the connec on between Ash Kalantarian on the a acking wing and Wakefield and Griffith con nues to build and Kalantarian looms as a key piece of the North puzzle going forward. Millicent’s shoo ng combina on of Sanderson and Verbena were again outstanding, while there was much to like about the defensive effort and if nothing else, the Saints will thrive on such a finals like contest to further test their systems and tac cs.
ROUND PREVIEWS SOUTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER It is a mammoth task but with finals s ll mathema cally possible, South Gambier will need to bring their absolute best to challenge premiership favourite West Gambier at Blue Lake Sports Park this weekend. An upset victory would keep the Demons inside the top four but given the Roos demoli on of the reigning premiers last round by 21 goals, it is hard to mount a case for the young South line-up to prevail. Sarah Ri er and Lisa McGregor are a well oiled machine in the shoo ng circle and both are accurate finishers. At the other end, Jade Ri er and Amy Cram shut down me and space on their opponents and are strong over the shot. The young Roos mid court has been as dynamic as any mid court this season, led by Tara Bryant in the centre and well supported by Mikaela Horrigan on the a acking wing and Zoe Malseed, coming off a best on court round 14 performance, on the defensive wing. The West trio has speed, smarts and skill and they have provided strong connec on between the defence and offence that is so experienced and se led for the Roos. South’s shoo ng duo of Alyssa Duncan and Lara Munro will need to work over me to find good shoo ng posi on and will need to use their feeders to shi the defence and open up space for each other. Accurate finishing will also be crucial as Ri er and Cram will dominate the boards. At the other end, Grace Edwards and Ellie Bouchier will need to be on song from the start with a ght checking game to deny Sarah Ri er and McGregor the chance to receive easy ball in range. The South mid court is a good match form the Roos trio and is just as young and hard running with Ruby Richter coming off a strong game in round 13 and Tully McShane and Megan Reid both working hard on the circle’s edge to make good posi on and feed the ball accurately. South has had its worst results of 2022 against West and West should make it three from three in fine style. EAST GAMBIER V MILLICENT East Gambier had started to look like it was building towards playing its best netball as the
finals approached but the Bulldogs were never really in the contest against West last weekend and will be looking to iron out the wrinkles when they host Millicent this weekend. The Saints enter the clash off the back of a draw with North Gambier and having had a tough tussle with East the last me the two met, will be well prepared. Every match up will be intriguing. East shooter Amryn Bosko and Saints defender Por a McRae are two of the most promising teenagers in the compe on and it will be one of the pivotal ba les of the day. Bosko will need to be at her mobile best to shake off the ght checking McRae, and accuracy will also be cri cal with McRae’s ability on the rebound. Sarah Lock has started to find her mojo since returning from a calf injury and her ba le with Hannah Nitschke will also be cri cal as Lock is the architect of what happens in the shoo ng circle but she will be given no easy ball by Nitschke. Tarsh McCallum is the epitome of speed and smarts and where Millicent gives the task to Lisa Duldig or Georgia Clarke, who have been sharing the wing defence and centre roles, they will be looking to deny the hard working east wing a ack easy access to the circle’s edge. And whichever Saint isn’t looking to limit the influence of McCallum will have the equally difficult task of not le ng Emily Hunter run riot. Hunter had a quiet start to 2022 by her lo y standards but she is hi ng her straps now and her influence at both ends of the court can be match shaping. Another huge ba le in this clash will be East wing defender Tyne Bosko and Millicent wing a ack Paige Nitschke. Both are unassuming players that fly under the radar but both rarely play a bad game, Bosko is relentless with pressuring her opponent and contests everything, while Nitschke is unflappable but gets the job done, hi ng the circle hard and delivering the ball without fuss but always with precision. The East defensive combina on of Bo Creek and Morgan Amy have the toughest task in the compe on at the moment, limi ng the scoring opportuni es of Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena, and that would well be the game. Much if East’s success over the past few seasons has been built off the back of defensive pressure
right across the court and that will need to be the case this weekend or no ma er how well Amy and Creek read the play and love the aerial contest, the ball will come down too fast and too o en to precent Millicent pos ng a winning score and the Saints will bounce back to the winners’ list, narrowly. NORTH GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD North Gambier would be looking to this match with Casterton Sandford as a chance to finetune ahead of finals with a win this weekend almost certainly set to catapult them back into the top four at the expense of South Gambier. Coming off a come from behind, tense draw with top ranked Millicent, the Tigers had their preferred star ng seven out on court last round for the first me in weeks and it showed just how good North can be when it all comes together. Caroline Wakefield has been the shining light all season and her combina on in the shoo ng circle with Macey Griffith has con nued to develop, while the connec on with Brianna Walters and Ash Kalantarian, who has been a welcome returnee for the Tigers in the past couple of ou ngs, is looking more seamless and less likely to create turnover ball. When Mel Renko and Zahra Crough combine in the defensive circle, their experience and willingness to contest wreaks havoc and Libby Morgan is as tenacious as ever on the defensive wing. Coming off the performance they had in round 13 and given what is on the line in terms of a finals berth, you cannot see the Tigers giving Casterton Sandford a look in at all. The Cats showed some good signs last weekend, with Ivy Lane and Madalene Cleary, star ng to work well as a shoo ng combina on, while at the back end of the court, Tessa Marra, Charlo e Rice and Ebany Jarrad got some important touches and made life tough for the South frontline. With Scarle Jarrad now sidelined with a knee injury, the young mid court of Makayla Hutchins and Phoebe Carlin, is hard running and smart with ball in hand but even if Caeleigh Humphries returns to the court for the Cats, it is hard to mount a case against a team that just has to win to keep their season alive.

North Gambier Yellow & Black Under 11’s - North 0 vs Millicent 40 We started the game off with some very good defence work and we held Millicent to nil score for half the first quarter. However, we were unable to score on the turnovers and struggled to move the ball down the court due to Millicent strong defence game and court plays. Although we didn’t score, we kept the opposition to a score much less than our last game which I great. Only 2 more games for the season let’s work hard to keep improving. Best players: Isla Brook (sponsored by Squashbrook) and Payton Bilney Under 13A’s - North 10 vs Millicent 30 Our team goal for the game against Millicent was "work hard for the full game and never give up", and that's what the girls did. It was a tough game against Millicent. Our girls kept their composure and didn't panic. They came back strong in the 3rd quarter and played very competitive netball. However, Millicent responded and were just too strong in the end. We have to make less mistakes in throwing balls away. Indeed, our goal going forward for future games. Best players: Mackenzie Harrold and Tayah Jones Under 13B’s - North 15 vs Millicent 38 We started strong and our girls worked hard to implement the skills we had been wo r k i n g o n at t ra i n i n g . We h a d a competitive first half characterised by good court structure, enabling us to move the ball into our attack and our goalies capitalised. Millicent then came back strong, and we lost momentum. However, a good game to build on going forward. Best players: Raine Darimaani and Mischa Human Under 15 A’s - North 30 vs Millicent 37 North had a strong start, however, couldn’t maintain playing our natural game. Millicent were dominant in defense and we needed to adjust quicker. The girls will be working hard to identify when to adjust their personal game and how to beat/be competitive against their opponent. We would like to thank Tora for sitting on our bench and taking the court with confidence this week. Ava Collins, Ruby Mitchell and Jayme Young had a very strong game in defense and Elodie Adam was accurate under the ring. We are looking forward to the next opportunity to come up against Millicent and show them a stronger team. A huge congratulations to Elodie Adam on your 50th game and Jayme Young on your 100th game, great achievement girls! Best players: Ava Collins and Elodie Adam Under 15 B’s - North 38 vs Millicent 25 A great game girls. All played their part in this turn around victory from our last encounter. Some strong defence and tight checking from Penny and Milly with Tillie and Bella driving fantastically from WD. Lily and Tora worked hard through the middle under some difficult conditions and fed so well to Megan, Mia and Claire. Keep this momentum going through to finals and we will reap the rewards. Best players: Penny Coleman and Megan Wells Under 17’s - North 34 vs Millicent 76 This week we were missing a few of our team members, but we were fortunate enough to add Ruby Mitchell and Elodie Adams to our group. Millicent are a very tight unit and we knew it was going to be a tough game. However, we didn’t have the start that we had planned, and it took us a bit of time to settle. Despite this the girls continued to play hard and work

collaboratively to achieve the goals we had put in place. Our second half was definitely st ro n ge r, a n d we l o o ke d fa r m o re competitive. Our defensive pressure was excellent, but our efforts we were not able to stop Millicent’s well-oiled attack line. Regardless of the scoreboard, the girls played with passion and intent until the final whistle was blown. They stuck to our structures and remained positive. A big thank you to Ruby and Elodie, who both played outstanding games and added value to our team. Best players: Alice Tentye and Zarly Jones (Sponsored by Chris and Greg Kennedy) C Grade - North 31 vs Millicent 36 An amazing game by the C grade team this week! We’ve had some big losses to Millicent this year, and this was our tightest game yet! The girls came out firing right from the beginning and for most of the game were able to keep the score within one or two goals. Our shooting accuracy was high, and we were able to pick up lots of loose balls and turnovers which we were able to score off of. Despite Millicent creeping away with the lead only in the last few minutes, this week’s game was one that the North girls should definitely be proud of. Best players: Georgia Wehrmann and Bec Johnson B Grade - North 46 vs Millicent 49 It was always going to be a tough game against Millicent, but the girls were ready to take the top side on. It was a good tight match right up until the last quarter where Millicent where able to convert on a few of our mistakes. Our defensive pressure from Bri Lush, Hannah and Katie throughout the full 4 quarters was great making Millicent have to work hard to get the ball into their attack end. Amelia worked tirelessly in C alongside Georgia and Maddie all delivering the ball nicely into Ash and Bri. A good team effort girls. Best players: Ash Ashby and Brianna Lush

A Reserve - North 59 vs Millicent 67 Although we didn’t get the win yesterday what a fantastic team effort against the top team Millicent. Ava had an outstanding game in defence against a very tall, strong and accurate goalie however was able to get in the right position and create many turnovers. Attack line are continuing to work well together in different combinations and worked hard to feed the ball in to the goalies and Riley had a great game holding strong and converting on the scoreboard. Definitely a few areas to still work on, but a positive game moving in to the last 2 rounds. Best players: Riley Mitchell and Ava Collins A grade - North 62 vs Millicent 62 A great game for our A grade girls yesterday. We were able to create turnovers from pressure in our defence end and convert with accuracy. Macey played a huge part in this, with her movement and confidence in the goal circle. A very solid effort from each individual player on the court allowed us to stay within 5 going into the last quarter. We started the quarter slowly however through a whole team defensive approach, we were able to get three crucial turnovers in the last 7 minutes to level the scores. It was going goal for goal and time was nearly up. We were able to get a one goal lead in the last 45 seconds but could only hold down a draw. Millicent are the top side and we showed when we have a full team and everyone working hard, we can match it with these tops sides. Fantastic comeback and composure! Millicent Red, Black & White A Grade Millicent 62 drew with North 62 Best Players- Tabatha Sanderson & Demi Verbena After a slow start we found our rhythm in the second and third quarters and shot accurately to be up at three quarter time. We started the last quarter well before North forced us into errors and the game went goal for goal. We couldn’t turn the ball back in the dying seconds and the match ended in a draw. We look forward to finishing our season with some strong games before finals start. Thanks to Alannah & Keeley for helping us on the weekend.

A big Congratulations to our B grade team, getting a win and some points on the board! Their perseverance has paid off and it finally went their way last weekend! Congratulations also goes to Amity Sheedy clocking up her 50 game milestone. Results against East were:
U11s - The girls got off to a great start on Saturday against East. Molly and Mackenna worked well in goals together with accurate shots. The mid court girls in Miah, Harper and Aggie set up plenty of great passages of play and applied great pressure throughout the game. Phoebe the little pocket rocket played great as well as Chaneil in defence pulling in several rebounds. Kenzie always gives 100% played a great game. Ruby impressed us in centre with some great drives into attack. Thank you to East for playing the 6 quarters our girls appreciated it. With only 2 games left for the 11s every week they show improvement and determination. It amazing to see them grow as netballers. Well done girls keep up the great work. West defeated East 31 - 7. 1st Best Player: Miah Jackway 2nd Best Player: Molly Thomas. U13B - Another nice little win against a hard hitting East team. Everyone put 100% in from attack to defence and everywhere in between. Isobel moving brilliantly across the court and added support in the goal circle. Hannah’s clever work helping the defenders out and supporting throughout the mid court nicely. Even though it was a wet day we were still able to settle and turn small mistakes into shooting opportunities. Thanks to Molly for sitting bench again this week. Well done 13Bs with only 2 games left of the minor round finals are almost here and we are more than ready and capable! Let’s go west!! West defeated East 15 - 8. 1st Best Player: Isobel Richards 2nd Best Player: Sara Richards. Game Day Vouchers: Matilda Neale & Hannah Jackson. U13A - After a week off, and with a couple of players out, it took us a little while to settle into our usual style of game. But we persevered and everyone continued to work hard for the full 12 minutes of each quarter which helped us come away with a convincing win. Well done Libby for fighting to get as many turnovers as possible and Lara for regaining confidence and continually providing options in attack. A special thank you to Claire who had an awesome game in GK and slotted into the team with ease. West defeated East 42 - 10. 1st Best Player: Analeigh Anderson 2nd Best Player: Swaye Lindner. Game Day Voucher Awards: Libby Buck & Lara Murdoch. U15B - This week saw the girls take to the court against East at home to finish off their school holidays. The team were down a couple of players so we were very thankful to both Tully Lindner and Ella Jolley for stepping in to give us a hand and enable our girls to have a breather when needed. The stand out this week was the mid court section which saw the girls showing second and third efforts resulting in numerous turn overs. It's great as coaches to see the girls laugh, smile, high five etc so much and really enjoy playing the game we all love. Our team are excited for the weeks leading up to finals, they have shown just how much they have grown as players over the season. All their hard work and determination is paying off. West defeated East 56 - 14. 1st Best Player: Tully Lindner 2nd Best Player: Ella Jolley. U15A - Really proud of how the girls played the game today. It started out goal for goal but the girls stuck to their guns and grinded out a really tight first half of netball. Immi and Ella worked beautifully together in the circle, and were well supported by Tully, Hayley and Alex. Magz, Mikayla and Ellie in defence were solid, working hard to create turnovers! Well done
Blue & Red girls! West defeated East 40 -21. 1st Best Player: Ella Jolley 2nd Best Player: Ellie Xanthopoulos. Game Day Vouchers: Maggy Dyson & Hayley Cowie Under 17’s - We started off a bit slow letting East get a 5 goal lead before we scored, but my girls bounced back to be 2 up at quarter time. Having Jordy and Halle away this weekend we slotted Hannah back into goals with the ever accurate Aleisha. After her initial lack of confidence Hannah worked well with Aleisha holding her player well and shooting with accuracy. The goalies were supported brilliantly with some awesome passes into the circle by Charlotte and Amity. Charlotte’s work at C this weekend really had the East girls on the back foot. Our defence players in Kirra, Stevi and Maddie kept up the pressure for the whole game making the East attacks work for everything they could get. The under 17 girls ended up with a 21 goal lead (53-32) at the end of the game which was a brilliant effort by the team. A win is always a great reward for all the work they put into training. Well done girls. West defeated East 53 -32. 1st Best Player: Aleisha Pearson 2nd Best Player: Stevi Clayton C Grade - A well fought game with the score unfortunately running away from us in the end. With 2 key players out we had 2 juniors fill in and fit in perfectly. Was great to see such a good fight all the way down the court and with strong defence we saw some lovely work in the goal circle between the goalies. With only 2 more games left for the season we look forward to a tough fight to finish the season right. West defeated by East 23 - 46. 1st Best Player: Emily Sutherland 2nd Best Player: Emma Pollock. East Gambier Red & Black A GRADE - East 36 lost to West 57 We need to play to our strengths and work smarter. We need to find another gear and be hungrier for the ball if we want to put it up to Millicent this week. We had some really good transitions down the court to our goalies and the girls work hard in attack. Good defensive pressure, but we need to work harder on our one on ones and shutting them down to slow down the play. It was tough slippery conditions, which didn’t bring out the best in us. Best Players – Sarah Lock & Emily Hunter Awards – Tarsh McCallum (Creek Livestock) Sarah Lock (OK Pie Shop) A RES – East 48 defeated West 35 We worked really hard off the ball to set up some good space and direction. A few out with sore heads and Covid with some coming back from Covid and illnesses made for a slow game. Half time changes made for a positive score line difference pulling through and increasing. Communication was all the difference in slowing down the game and holding control. Best Players – Jacinta Clark & Kate Gaffney Awards – Kate Gaffney (Gym Challenge Meals) Ruby Jacobs (Jens Hotel) 17’s – East 32 lost to West 53 A really good start to the game with everyone working hard. Even though the final score blew out, I was happy to see everyone work hard. Our passing and leads were good and overall work rate was great to see. We must learn to use our bodies to position ourselves to safe guard the ball and place the ball using this as well. Keelie, Indi and Lillie drove well through the mid court. We had good defence from Matilda and Tonique and they are teaming well together in the defensive circle. Raine and Jordy, fought hard all game finishing off with some great shooting. Keep at it guys

Best Players – Matilda Lamb & Lilli Spooner Awards – Lilli Spooner (Natural Born Grillers) Keelie Neilson (Hungry Jacks) 15A’s – East 21 lost to West 40 The girls had a strong start against a tough west side. Our midcourt worked hard to bring the ball down the court with the defenders getting their hand to lots of early ball. The ever improving goalie combination stood up and capitalised on lots of our gains. Unfortunately our intensity just couldn't keep up with Wests vigorous players. A great effort girls. Unfortunately our intensity was not there from the start which resulted in a lot of turned over ball and little errors. Keep your heads up moving forward girls and believe in yourselves! Best Players –Lily McIntosh & Sharni Clark Awards – Charlotte Crute (Scroll Queen) Ellie Chittleborough (Bakers Delight) 13A’s – East 10 lost to West 42 Always a tough game when we come up against West. Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red
Round 14 saw the Casterton-Sandford Netball Sides taking on the South Gambier Demons at Island Park. We celebrated milestone games this week for Charlotte Rice and Marissa Jamieson. Both girls played their 100th games, congratulations!
JUNIORS: Georgia & Pinelopi led the Under 11’s into another close game last weekend. With the ball going from either attacking end as the defensive players made turnover after turnover, the 8-10 score-line was an unlucky loss.
SENIORS: The A Grade side put up a tough fight but lost with a score line of 43-60. Ebany, Charlotte & Phoebe provided excellent passages of play keeping the South girls on their feet.
The quick passages of play in the Under 15A’s made by Matilda, Indi, Hannah & Brydie allowed the team to sneak away with a one goal win 23-22.
Mikayla & Chloe’s accuracy in the goal ring, Claire & Sharna’s strength in defence & Lauren’s precision through the midcourt, led the A Reserve team to another victory for the season 5146. B Grade Cats girls had spectators on the edges of their seats as they played in a close fought game to come away with a draw 46-46. Emma, Renae, Kerri & Annalee played critical roles in the team last week. The losing score line 31-54 seen in the C Grade, didn’t reflect how determined the girls were to top South Gambier. Janine, Chantelle, Brittany & Caitlin demonstrated terrific sportsmanship alongside the rest of the team. Ebany, Ivy, Madeline & Phoebe were strong presences on the court in the Under 17’s on Saturday morning. The girls came away with a convincing win 51-30.
Under 15B players in Brydie, Mia & Amelia kept the communication lines open and backed each teammate up to make the most of each possession. They unfortunately couldn’t get the win and lost 20-38. The Under 13A’s had a close game, but despite the ball skills displayed by Renae, Phoebe, Ella & Rachel, they went down to the South girls 12-19. What a game was played by Marlee, Rachel & Makayla in the Under 13B’s to come away with a convincing win 30-4. Goodluck to each team for our last away game this week, and we look forward to seeing everyone at Island Park next week for the final round game before finals! See below images of our girls that achieved their milestone games last week! The A Grade side had the privilege of playing in the club heritage dresses last week also!
