IN DEEPO Perth outfit, Sprawl, are set to release their debut LP, Deepo. It’s the band’s first release since 2014’s Aleph EP and was recorded last year by Kieran Kenderessy (The Birds of Tokyo, Usurpers of Modern Medicine). The band describes the LP as a “sparse, jagged blend of dissonant melodies, sore-thumb samples and the asymmetric rhythms of the mathematically distressed”. Sprawl will launch the album with special guests Moana, Hip Priest, The Government Yard and Good Try on Friday, May 20, at the Rosemount Hotel.

PUNKS FOR WEST PAPUA Award-winning documentary Punks For West Papua is set for a special screening in Perth along with guest filmmaker Anthony Brennan, and performances from Yob Mob, King Of Travellers, Rabid Abbott and DJ General Justice. The event will take place at Four5Nine Bar in the Rosemount Hotel, on Wednesday, May 4. With such an epic and much-loved back catalogue Iron Maiden more than most bands, could play for three or four hours and not have a boring moment. Choosing a setlist can’t be easy. “Well, it’s not easy!” laughs Harris. “We could get up and play a whole load of songs that we’ve never ever played before, and still have two full sets of it, we’ve got that many songs! Maybe one day we should think about

Ed Force One Is Cleared To Land Playing Perth Arena on Saturday, May 14, on the Antipodean leg of their Book Of Souls World Tour, is legendary British band Iron Maiden. SHANE PINNEGAR gets bassist, Steve Harris, on the phone for a chat. Iron Maiden are being flown from city-tocity on this world tour by none other than commercial pilot and band vocalist Bruce Dickinson. Dickinson, who recently successfully battled throat cancer, causing the delay of their Book Of Souls album and tour, was not behind the controls when their Boeing 747400 plane – Ed Force One – was damaged at a Chilean airport on March 12, causing logistical headaches for the band when the plane was grounded for repairs. “Yeah, it was frustrating,” says bass player/songwriter, Steve Harris, taking up the story. “I think, obviously, Bruce was devastated about it – even though it was not his responsibility, because he wasn’t even on the plane when it happened. The ground staff messed up, but it’s one of them things, what can you do?

these days it just wouldn’t feel right to do that. I think we would have knocked it on the head to be honest.” Iron Maiden had Harris’ daughter Lauren as the main support act on their last Australian tour, and this time round it’s his son George’s turn, with his band The Raven Age. It must be proud for him to stand in the wings as a dad and see the response they’re getting. “Yes, it’s fantastic,” Harris enthuses. “Obviously they’ve got to be there on merit - it’s no good them just being there, they’ve got to hold their own because our audiences are tough and they soon let you know if they don’t like it. “Basically, The Raven Age has been going down absolutely fantastic everywhere, getting great remarks, great reviews. They’re a bloody good band with really great songs and I can only give them the compliment to say that I wish I’d written them myself!”

“It’s all fixed, we’ve been flying on it since,” Harris assures us, confirming that Ed Force One is fully operational again and Dickinson will be piloting her around Australia. Book of Souls is studio album #16 for the metal stalwarts, and successfully marries their early heavy metal with your more recent progressive leanings. It’s a fantastic record, and Harris says the songs have been going down well live. “Yes, they are. It’s like any new tour with new songs, you’re not going to get the reaction that the old stuff gets. It’s just always like that when you’re playing new stuff. Maybe one day a couple of them songs will be regarded as a massive part of the set, once people know them more. But I think it’s really important to push your new stuff: it keeps things fresh.”

He’s been singing better than ever, I think.” Referencing Dickinson’s cancer battle, I ask Harris if the singer had been forced to retire, would Iron Maiden have found a replacement for him? “No, I don’t think so,” he says bluntly. “It was difficult enough before without him (Dickinson left the band between 1993 and ‘99),

What’s the point of coming out with something that’s just The Living End by numbers, it just doesn’t excited me.” Gearing up to head home for the band’s first headline run in five years, Cheney cast his eye on local talent as they chose tour supports; a exercise that proved an inspiring process and will see The Living End on their toes as they sweep across the country in June. “I’m really exited by all those bands like The Smith Street Band, Royal Headache and The 131s; they all just seem hungry, edgy and everything that I love and I find it really inspiring “I’m sort of making sure I’ve got my shit together for the tour because I know that (support bands Bad//Dreems and The 131s) are going to be forces to be reckoned with. There’s just bands out there that are no bullshit; just laying it down and they’re damn good, they’re not hiding behind anything, it’s just raw rock’n’roll - how it should be.”

PAUL DEMPSEY Mystery Hooks Over two decades fronting beloved Melbourne trio, Something For Kate, Paul Dempsey has long been one of Australia’s most intriguing songwriters.

But you were still writing on that 20th Anniversary Tour weren’t you? I was trying to, but it was a pretty hectic year. In late 2015, Steph (Ashworth, Dempsey’s wife and SFK bassist) got pregnant and we had another kid on the way so then it was a lot of different things happening. Early in 2015 was when I was like, halfway through the record and knuckling down a bit more, I had all the music. All the music was done. I was sitting on an album’s worth of music for all this time and I just needed to write the lyrics which is the hardest part for me, it takes the longest.

Are the music or the songs or the instrumentals - as they are at that point - searching for themes or have they maybe suggested themselves by the mood or the tone? Yeah, both. Some of them suggest themselves. Like Morningless is one of those songs where the music suggest the lyrics. In my listening sense of your music, it can be almost bleak, but there’s also always a bit of an earworm in there. It gets in there, but it’s not ever obvious. No it’s not. Look, I get that the music Something For Kate and the music that I do… it’s not hooky, it’s not pop. But it’s strangely hooky... Maybe, which if it is, it’s a happy accident. We love making music, we love playing music, but we’re not out to try and make people dance or make people fall in love with us. It’s more about trying

You know, I’ve made some records where I’ve been shooting for one thing and I’ve ended with a vague approximation where I’ve gotten close but I’ve not quite gotten there. With this record I feel like I’ve gotten closer to articulating my sort of strange skewed view of the world and the universe where we are strange creatures on a rock and we’re all completely aware of our impending death, surrounded by so much beauty and we’re capable of so much stuff, and we’re also capable of the most moronic shit.

It’s a characteristic that showcased a different hue when he released his debut solo album, Everything Is True, back in 2009. Dempsey always planned to record another solo album but it took somewhat longer than he imagined and here we are, some seven years later, toasting the release of his second solo LP, Strange Loop - co-produced by Tom Schick (Wilco, Ryan Adams) at Wilco’s The Loft Studio in Chicago - which drops on Friday, May 13. Quite literally toasting it. This X-Press Interview took place on a sunny Thursday afternoon several weeks ago at the Brisbane Hotel. Not only is Dempsey an intriguing songwriter, he’s quite the beer aficionado. Here’s cheers.

Where you writing the record or were you just writing? I was just writing songs; I’m never writing a record. I don’t think you’re writing a record until you’ve written six songs. Then when you’ve written six songs its like, ‘hey, four more and this is a record’. But to start out with you’re just writing songs. Maybe you know in some secret part of your brain that you’re writing a record but you won’t admit that to yourself because that would be too much pressure or something. But yeah, I started writing these songs in 2013 and then in 2014 we were like, ‘hey, Something For Kate has been together for 20 years, we should do a tour’. So then it was like, ‘this solo thing is going on the backburner for a while’.

Some writers are typically ‘I’ll-write-iton-the-back-of-a-napkin-just-give-me-15 minutes’ or somesuch, which implies a pretty lassez faire attitude re the commitment to that side of things... It depends what you want out of it, you know? Like if you can write something on the back of a napkin it could become the greatest thing ever and it will be exactly what that piece of music needed. You’ll be able to shake your hips all night long and enjoy that. That’s absolutely fine. It’s not really where I’m coming from for me. Music and lyrics and the marriage of those two things are the reason I do it. I’m obviously not trying to make people dance, it’s more like I’m trying to articulate something, express something, trying to, I don’t know... get out of my head.

to just… there’s a certain energy and a certain mindset, a certain view and a certain perspective that I am trying to present as a lyricist and that we as a band try and create musically. Its almost about wanting to undermine the listener. Look, its just an instinct. We just do what comes naturally to us according to our instincts and our instincts are informed by a whole lot of obscure ‘80s, American, indie, punk, hardcore, baroque, weird art rock. But lyrically, I guess I’m sort of trying to take a part of my head and make it available to people, and to also just get it out my head. It’s like I’m removing something and at the same time inviting people to ask themselves if they’ve considered the same things.

There’s comedy, and awe and wonder. Hopefully more of the comedy made it on to this record. I think that’s one thing that has always surprised me is that I’ve always found my lyrics funny and then I’ve always been continually surprised at how people didn’t find it funny and I only have myself to blame. But maybe with this record. When you get older you relax more. There’s more of me in this record than, I think, the previous ones.

Where is the gap between what you hear in your head and what you physically put down these days? It’s narrower. I guess that’s the feeling of progress to me, that I’ve narrowed that gap between what I want to do in my head and what I can actually achieve on the

Beyoncé’s sixth studio and second visual album Lemonade dropped via HBO on Saturday, with 12 tracks and slightly over an hour of a vast variety of musical genres from hip hop, reggae, rock, country and soul. Her messages throughout the album — loosely based off the Kubler-Ross model of the five stages of grief — delve into the stages of overcoming a partner’s infidelity, from ‘intuition’ all the way to ‘redemption’. Beyoncé explores a range of aspects of feminism and race, constantly surrounded by groups of iconic black women, from tennis player Serena Williams to French-Cuban doom-soul twin duo Ibeyi, feminist actress Amandla Stenberg and 12-year-old child actress Quvenzhane Wallis. Lemonade gives voices to minorities and shows immense depth, an undeniable wide range of talent and an evolution of Beyoncé’s artistic style.

Luke Daniel Peacock had been hiding his light under a bushel. The creative leader behind The Painted Ladies and long-time keyboardist for superb Brisbane octet Halfway, these outings have only hinted at the promise on his debut solo album, We’ve Come A Long Way Darling. There are moments such as Dreambox, where Peacock’s timbre will draw comparisons to Springsteen, but it is Alphabet City where he sounds like The Boss. Born Into Battle is a modern spin on the sound of a husky troubadour, that starts of gently before ringing guitar drives the tune to its conclusion, whilst Trees stays truer to the plucked acoustic sketchbook. Peacock is clearly a fan of the classic songwriters. While it is way too early to be placing him in such company, he has come up with a classy yet fresh sounding debut.

Western Australian guitarist Jaime (nee Jamie) Page’s debut solo album, Dark Universe, will forever be entwined with her coming out as transgender: indeed, she has admitted that her acceptance of her inner self was integral to this new music flowing out of her. It shouldn’t be, though: that revelation and her ongoing gender reassignment treatment has the potential to overshadow the beauty and grace of this epic album that is about overcoming adversity and being true to oneself. More progressive and overtly melodic than her previous work with Black Alice, Trilogy, Cozy Powell, Angus McDeth or Black Steel, Dark Universe features the stellar contributions of vocalist of Donna Greene and backing players, True Spirit.

Anohni’s — formerly known as Antony (Hegarty) — surprising new album jettisons the sweet orchestrations of The Johnsons. The delicate chamber pop melancholia has been replaced with dark brooding electronica from the laptops of Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawke. Anohni takes us on a bleak downward spiral that artfully juxtaposes the personal and the political. The blue-eyed soul of Execution wistfully sings of the governments that punish with death while Crisis confronts the sickening kind of war-torn violence we see on the news on a personal not political front. Once a supporter, the dirge-like Obama sees Anohni feeling duped and angry. Everything leads to the title track where destructive sleepwalking passivity is held to account. Is it really a case of hopelessness, or are we just plain hopeless?

HATCHED 2016 Graduate Expression

Hatched 2016 at PICA marks the 25th anniversary of the national graduate exhibition, sourced from almost two-dozen art schools and universities across the country. GILLIAN O’MEAGHER reports. Hatched 2016 curator, Nadia Johnson, says one of the standout themes this year in is gender politics. “A lot of people are looking at sexuality and maybe also because of the strong representation of women in the show, there’s a lot to do with representation and stereotypes of women in society, especially stereotypes of older women in culture. So there’s quite a lot around those kind of ideas, and a lot of different people are exploring gender identity.” Other recurring focal points include explorations of colour, form, and architecture. If you’re thinking the exhibition is made up of primarily traditional mediums, such as painting, think again. While they’re still present, diversity is a key element of Hatched 2016. Johnson cites photography as a strong medium, with everything from modern digital photography to film photography and polaroids present. “There’s quite a lot of performance art and sound art in this year’s Hatched, with artists straddling lots of different forms: it might be installation and sound, or performance and installation.” Continued on page 19...

The Variety Scholarship has enabled me to have additional lessons on multiple instruments (sax/trumpet and piano) that my parents would not otherwise have been able to afford. The scholarship also partially funded my Tenor Sax – again this would not have been possible otherwise. Do you think dyslexia has impacted your experiences with music? Whilst school can be a challenge in lieu of my reading difficulties, music comes naturally. I never feel more free than when I am soloing on stage! Reading music is automatic, text I have trouble retaining. What does the future hold? I have been offered accelerated entry to The James Morrison Academy in 2017. You’re no stranger to long-distance songwriting, but how does it work when it comes to The Jangle Band? The internet is your friend. For my part I stopped writing with an acoustic guitar and notepad over a decade ago. I start recording half-baked ideas and I then share them via cyberspace. The final track on the album, Exile On Murray Street, was literally written as we were all chatting on Facebook one Friday night. We were having a laugh at Ian’s jigsaw puzzle of Perth city from the 70s (that had a piece missing), I can’t remember who came up with the title but Jeff (Baker, guitar/ vocals) spontaneously writes a complete set of lyrics and 20 minutes later I banged out some chords on my piano. Song finished.

What’s the album say of who you all are then and now? We’ve all moved on - left, grown, changed, whatever - but somehow we found a moment in time to reconvene just to find out we are all still pretty much the same. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Stark Contrast Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johanson This third outing for Captain America follows the Marvel Civil War storyline. Instead of a panel-for-panel remake of the original event, Anthony and Joe Russo adapt key elements to the established Marvel Cinematic Universe. With rivals DC having already released a superhero slug-fest between former allies, how will this film compare? After an Avengers mission ends with the loss of civilian lives, the world seeks to put constraints on ‘enhanced individuals’. Wracked by personal guilt, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) supports the legislation purposed, but Captain America (Chris Evans) worries about what this loss of personal freedom would cost the team. With the return of Cap’s old friend Bucky (Sebastian Stan), seemingly in the guise of the murderous Winter Soldier, this difference is pushed to breaking point. It is a schism which will split the Avengers and pit team-mate against team-mate. This kicks off Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a bang. Thirteen

films in and the MCU is powering along like a super-solider. There is a fair bit of positioning here as characters are introduced (or re-introduced) and the board is set up for the final showdown, but it all feels organic. Civil War has a reliance on motivation and established characters that it can fall back upon, having already set up the groundwork. The fallout between Stark and Rogers isn’t forced, rather arising from previous history. Best still that ‘70s tone of film (delving into a complex conspiratorial script, concentrating on story and character) is carried over from Winter Soldier. Also like the previous film, the action beats are purely modern and amazingly executed. There is a balance of staging and frenetic editing about these scenes. You always have a sense of exactly what is going on even as the action ramps up, and everyone has a distinctive style of fighting. The results are jaw-dropping. The airport sequence alone is one that fans are going to be talking about for a long time to come, as friend turns against friend and the Avengers disassemble. Add to this the sense of personal stakes present all throughout this film, and the audience are well and truly invested as things heat up. If you only see one film this year about a billionaire playboy in a robot suit beating on a super patriot, then this is your obvious choice. They’re not just reflecting on things they’ve learnt through art history they’re engaged in current conversations and dialogues. It’s really exciting to see a new generation of artists that are engaged globally as well.” Johnson encourages people to come along and check out what’s happening in the emerging contemporary art world. “I think the thing that puts people off about contemporary art all the time is they can be intimidated, they’re not really sure, they think they might not get it - but I think this selection of artists offers so much variety, in works and themes and that kind of thing, so it’s a really interesting, exciting and accessible exhibition. “It takes over our whole building, so yeah, it’s just a really great exhibition, it’s loads of fun, and the opening party is going to be great.”

TRIPOD The E-Leg-tric Six Tripod appear at the Heath Ledger Theare as part of the Perth Comedy Festival on Thursday-Saturday, May 12-14. SAM WALL chats with third leg, Steven Gates. Tripod have been doing their thing for 20 years now and to celebrate they released a music book of 101 of their favourite songs. “Like, song books are even more hipster than vinyl and we’ve always been at the cutting edge… (cough),” says third leg, Steven Gates. Hipster or not it’s the 101-track songbook that makes up their new act. “On stage we have a bingo barrel with 101 numbered ping pong balls and we generate a random playlist every night. It’s nail-biting but so much fun. Reminds me of our first few years where we had no idea what we were doing but the difference is we know who we are now. “We wanted to have a party really. Doing a show that celebrates the entire spectrum of the work we’ve done, not just 12 of the audience’s ‘favourites’. We didn’t want to sing the same songs every night. We wanted to challenge ourselves and also challenge our audience. Some songs were written for video games or cartoons with an

emphasis on story rather than comedy so when they turn up, the show does turn like a light cycle in a Tron sequence. Of course the risk in light cycleesque swerving is the chance you might hit a wall, but it’s a challenge the trio obviously relish. “We sang a song full of Melbourne references to an audience in Brisbane during this show because it came up on a ping pong ball. Now there is no way would ever choose to sing that song to a Brisbane crowd, but after explaining they wouldn’t get any of the jokes, they laughed because they weren’t getting any of the jokes. That’s a perfect audience.

“We’re proud of the songs we’ve written over the years and although we found ourselves in the comedy world, with good reason, we believe there’s more to it than that.”

SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM Let’s Have A Ball

Sneaky Sound System will headline the Audi ART BALL, presented by Vogue Australia and the AGWA Foundation, on Saturday, May 14, at the Art Gallery of WA, along with Mosquito Coast, Kučka, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Perth Symphony Orchestra and more. BOB GORDON reports. They’ve been seemingly quiet in recent years - at least on the airwaves - but Sneaky Sound System surprised a few people last month with the release of a new single, I Ain’t Over You, and they’ve been well pleased with the reaction. “Indeed we are,” says multiinstrumentalist producer, Black Angus. “It’s definitely gaining traction in the clubs now and each time we play it the response is getting stronger and stronger. We like it and our fans seem to as well, so that makes us happy.” I Ain’t Over You is Sneaky Sound System’s first single release in four years and while they wanted to return with a bang, Angus and vocalist, Miss Connie, weren’t too overly-concerned about tailoring the track specifically for comeback success. “We just wanted something strong and uplifting and this track ticked the right boxes,” Angus notes. “Connie’s vocal is massive and the lyrics have a message of strength even though sometimes it’s hard to be strong.” While things may have seemed quite in Sneakyland, Connie and Angus have been busy with DJ appearances both far and wide, as well as writing and recording in the studio.

“It’s been hectic and varied,” he says. “We had been touring non-stop for 10 years and were feeling like we needed to take some time out to do some normal things - like spend time with family, renovate our house, build a new studio, get married - that kind of stuff. “Of course we kept touring through Europe and the US and building our club night, Sneaky Sundays - both here in Bondi and also in Mykonos. And writing, writing, writing and producing.” The new single is only the start of further hectic times for Sneaky Sound System for the rest of the year and beyond. “We have about 20 songs ready to go,” Angus reveals, “so expect some more singles, a couple of clubbier tracks and there’s a good chance we’ll have an album by the end of the year. “Touring-wise we head over to Europe on June 1 for another season in Mykonos, Ibiza and Barcelona, which is always amazing. licks and a solid rhythm section. There are also a few songs that revolve more closely around the lyrics and more complicated guitar work. In these songs, the band acts as more of a support for the more intense parts of the songs. These have very strong emotional tones delivered with firm hearts. There’s a good balance between the heart-wrenchers, and also the heart-lifters.

You spent April touring around Australia touring in support of the EP. How’d it go and what were the highlights? The tour was awesome! We had a great time catching up and playing with old mates and meeting new ones. We were lucky to play with some really awesome bands as well. The highlight for me would have to have been playing the Cranker in Adelaide again. The crowd there is always super supportive and energetic and it was awesome to see so many familiar faces again!

What has your new bassist, Wheels McKenzie, brought to the fold? Having Wheels on board has really added a weight to our live sound but also opened up a bunch of doors for us musically within our songwriting. Personally I feel a lot less pressure having Wheels on bass and I can focus more on playing with different vocal melodies and explore that side in a bit more depth, something I struggled with as a twopiece. If we were ever going to add a bass player, it couldn’t be just anyone and we’re really lucky that the dynamics between the three of us both on and off stage works so well.

Has Lionizer become the band you wanted to be, or something different besides? When Bailey (Lions, drums) and I first started Lionizer back in 2012, I don’t think we ever had an overall goal of what we wanted to be. In fact, we had no clue, we just wanted to make music with each other and have a good time. Anything other than that was just a bonus. Now we’ve been doing it a bit longer I don’t think much has really changed. What’s been the evolution of the band since forming via working at Mojos? Well, we started as the Mojos house band for a one off New Year’s Eve extravaganza and rocked the pants off all of the six people in the room. They begged for more so we gave it to them and started gigging as a four-piece rock band. The lovely, long-legged Shiny Joe Ryan offered to record us one day so we thought we’d add a little mandolin and violin for the sessions. An EP and an album later we still haven’t got rid of them and I guess at this stage they’re here to stay. We just brought in the vivacious James Dolin so now we are like seven wonders of the world.

We All Scream... Galloping Foxleys have been announced as part of the hefty local line-up for the State Of The Art festival on Monday, June 6, at Elizabeth Quay, with Jebediah, San Cisco, Ta-Ku, Koi Child and many more. Vocalist/ guitarist, Shane Corry, brings us up to trot. You recently played at the Fairbridge Festival, how was that? Fairbridge was a real hoot. We got to play five shows; recorded a dripping wet cover of an Eric Bogle song; caught some killer music, had sweet jams and generally made a nuisance of ourselves.

What’s it like to be on the State Of The Art festival? We were all pretty amazed to see our band name swirling around Elizabeth Quay in crazy digital bliss! Can’t wait for the festival, we got some new songs to try out.

You also recently won the ‘Folk’ category of the WAM Song Of The Year Award, that must be pretty satisfying as songwriters... Who knew you could write a song about sex, drugs and chocolate icecream and get an award? It was a lovely surprise and we’re really stoked about it. Our collective mammies and daddies were beaming with pride.

What are the plans for the rest of 2016? Recording a new EP this week, playing some more sweet shows, writing more songs, going on holidays, lots of chocolate ice cream and hopefully another album towards the end of the year.

Has the band changed much over time, or are you musically on the same track as ever? We have a mission statement in Kimura; ‘All songs must be heavy and groovy’. Along the way, with the odd line-up change, obviously there are variations in writing styles and song composition techniques, but we believe we have remained true to the original concept. We’ve also introduced the use of samples to live shows which brings a point of difference.

Take Strength Kimura launch their new EP, Kintsukuroi, at Amplifier Bar on Friday, May 13, supported by DFC, Psychonaut, Enforce and Dethlahem. Drummer, Gordo Steinberger, fills in the cracks. Take us through the Kimura experience in the last 12 months... We’ve had the opportunity to do a few regional WA shows in the last year or so and found it quite rewarding as not many original Perth metal acts get out into the country. One of which was supporting East Coast metal act LORD in Kalgoorlie this time last year. Taking part in Metal United Down Under shows in 2014 in Bunbury and 2015 in Perth were also quite exciting. Earlier this year we had the opportunity to play at Amplifier Bar in support of Tempest Rising and Reapers Riddle, very exciting to play on the same stage as some of the world’s best international metal acts.

What is the significance of the EP title, Kintsukuroi, and what it means to the band in particular? Kintsukuroi is a Japanese form of art, the definition of which is ‘to repair with gold’ - the art of repairing pottery with gold or silver lacquer and understanding the piece is now more beautiful having been broken. There is theme running through most of the songs on the EP about coming out of a bad life experience stronger than what you were prior. Basically, you should always try to take strength from the tough situations that life throws at you. What did you want to evoke of the band on this release? We wanted to give the listener a sense of the precision and brutality our live show brings. Also give them a feeling of strength. Listening to metal for most people is a release, a way to shake of the burdens of life in a positive way. What are the plans now that the EP is out? We are heading back into the studio to work on new material for our next release plus also do the odd local Perth show. KARNIVOOL Sugar Army Badlands (formerly Devilles) Thursday, April 28, 2016 Perth’s newest live music venue, Badlands Bar, was packed to capacity for the first night of Karnivool’s string of sold-out shows. Perth rock band Sugar Army kicked off the night, with dream-like vocals and a buzzing bass line enticing the crowd out of the shadows. A slow start saw the three-piece lacking in oomph, playing songs as if they’d been rehearsed to perfection. Showcasing tracks from their upcoming album, Beast, it was clear the crowd had arrived early to hear their older songs, with the sound of people talking at times overtaking singer Patrick McLaughlin’s gentle vocals. The boys seemed to enjoy playing their older tracks as much as the crowd loved hearing them, with the venue lighting up as Sugar Army ripped through Tongues In Cheeks and Acute. Airy melodies juxtaposed an aggressive beat, with voice creating an otherworldly sound. Well before Karnivool were due on stage every free space in Badlands was occupied. The crowd swelled as the lights went down, only for it to be a false alarm, leaving everyone anxiously holding their breaths. Karnivool kicked off with Simple Boy, the bass line so thick and heavy you could feel

it pounding in your chest. Singer, Ian Kenny, commanded and controlled the audience like a conductor, letting them know when to slow down and when to go crazy. His dance moves in between musical breaks were questionable, reminiscent of Drake’s dodgy dancing in Hotline Bling. Despite this, Kenny’s voice captivated the audience, sounding angelic and beautiful when backed by crashing cymbals and distorted guitars. New songs like Aozora showed potential, but everyone clearly wanted to hear Karnivool’s classics, with the crowd chanting the lyrics to Roquefort in between songs. Cote and Themata nearly tore the roof down, the venue exploding with energy as the crowd jumped along. Smiling, it was clear the band loved how passionate people were about their music, something not all Perth bands get to experience. As the band rapidly changed tempos during Umbra, Kenny looked physically and emotionally exhausted — not surprising considering how much heart and soul he poured out into every word he sang. Karnivool didn’t disappoint, mesmerising the crowd from the get-go, their tight and precise performance setting high expectations for the rest of their tour and their upcoming album. THE DRONES Benjamin Witt Quartet Rosemount Hotel Saturday, April 30, 2016 The local experimental sounds of the Benjamin Witt Quartet proved to be a stellar opening of the evening’s proceedings. Not only did he draw a crowd in from the exterior bars but he wowed with a dense use of electronic beats stacked on the warm sounds of upright bass and saxophone as somewhat of a natural progression from the sounds developed with his previous band, The Chemist. Witt’s guitar melodies, while understated in their presence among the band’s sound, dominated heavily in their complexity and ability to drive to the fore with scratchy riffs leaning to outright bombastic and mesmerising solos. From the moment The Drones took to the stage, the noise favourites created something that cannot be described as anything but powerful. Wailing guitar lines and waves of feedback lead the opener of Private Execution, beginning a procession of angst, vitriol and gritty rock’n’roll with Gareth Liddiard’s unapologetic stance on stage and the ruthless thrashing of his sixstring. Though Feelin Kinda Free may have only been in our ears for a few weeks now, on first listen it was difficult to imagine how

of Taman Shud leading to a bone rattling bass breakdown from Fiona Kitschin. While the night was a homecoming celebration for the new record the set left nothing behind, cutting through Jezebel, To Think That I Once Loved You and The Minotaur, the compressed bodies in the crowd hardly given a moment to breathe. It’s been seven years since the band blasted River Of Tears at the Cannot Buy My Soul tribute concert. The song’s composer Kev Carmody once said something along the lines of ‘The passion in that performance is unbelievable,’ and as the same song hit the crowd to close the night, the comment still rang true — the echoing power, passion and ruthless nature The Drones bring to their live performance, while just a piece of what makes them one of the country’s finest acts, is exactly why they continue to jam venues everywhere. MT MOUNTAIN Reaching The Summit Mt Mountain launch their debut album, Cosmos Terros, on Saturday May 14, at the Rosemount Hotel with help from Tangled Thoughts of Leaving, Skullcave and Erasers. ALEX GRIFFIN reports. To hear guitarist Glenn Palmer tell it, Mt Mountain’s steady ascent to their place as one of Australia’s bleariest psych bands has been less a K2 climb than it has floating uphill. The Perth five-piece, who blend desert rock, hard blues, and shamanistic drone into a boiling, dusty moonshake, they’ve had good fortune to match the effort and precision of their tight, roiling songs with things just coming together everywhere else. Take how they came to nab the miasmic and striking cover art for Cosmos Terros, for example; it came courtesy of the respected NYC sculptor, Paul Kaptein, after more or less falling out of the clouds. “Originally, I just saw it on my Instagram feed!” Palmer exclaims, “but then it clicked, his surname – he’s my friend’s girlfriend’s uncle, randomly enough. We had been looking for a cover, and we all felt the picture was perfect straight away, so just

as he was having an exhibition we asked her if she could run the idea past him. He was down, so we emailed him, and then it was done! We didn’t even have to edit the image.” Recording the impassive and occasionally crushing Cosmos Terros came about through the same kind of serendipity. Producer Broderick Madden-Scott also worked with the band on 2014’s breakout Chantry 7”, the sessions for which were the start of Cosmos Terros. When it came

Like, four or five songs later…” The boys’ first national tour, in support of respected German heavyweights Kadavar (“we’re super, super excited”), developed in similar fashion. “Dave Cutbush had been pushing us for a long time to do a tour, and we mentioned some dates we were planning to play in Melbourne. He said, ‘well, maybe not, I’ve got Kadavar booked the same night in Melbourne; why not do the full

pretty unreal,” he recalls. “A band we’d all been listening to for years, especially when we’d only been playing for a year or so. None of us had played shows or been in a band before. And then there was the EP launch at the Rosemount in 2014, which is probably still the best reception we’ve ever had at a show. We weren’t too confident because it’s such a big venue, but we had more than what we expected turn out, so we were pretty blown away, it was unforgettable.” If things have been clicking into gear externally for the band, it’s only because of what happens when they click together, with all the material built up from scratch in the jam room. “We jam every week; someone will have a bass line, and we just write it together in the room. When we’ve tried to do it any other way, like one person writing the majority of a song, it doesn’t feel as natural or come out as well. We’ve moved way more towards just jamming everything out as a group instead of trying to preconceive anything.” If moving by intuition has served Mt Mountain this well so far, looks like they’re set for the summit.
