The Xavier swimmers at Washington High School and Kennedy High School continue to succeed. The Washington Warriors are still undefeated this season, and the Kennedy Cougars picked up a win in a double-dual swimming meet in Waterloo. “Our team goal is to qualify more members of our team from last year to State, and to finish the season with a winning Dual Meet record,” John Richardson said. Currently Kennedy has 1-1 record in dual meets, but they have two 2nd place finishes, and one win in meets versus multiple schools. As for Washington, they are ranked 5th in the Iowa Swim Coaches Association power rankings. The Warriors have now won four straight meets, and Nick Durin has stood out as a top swimmer. In a meet against Iowa City High, Durin had a perfect day. He went four for four by winning the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, and the 100 breaststroke. “So far this year, we’re undefeated, and it feels awesome,” Durin said. He then went on to win the 200 freestyle relay against Jefferson, and he earned three 3rd

place finishes when Washington hosted Bettendorf. Washington will swim again on January 3 at Cedar Falls. “We’re going to continue to work for our goal: to win the 50th district title for Washington,” Durin said. As for Kennedy, Richardson is off to a great start. In the Bobcat Invitational at Marshalltown, Richardson claimed three 3rd place finishes and he won the 400 freestyle relay. He also competed in a meet in Waterloo and claimed three 1st place finishes in the 50 freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay, and the 100 breaststroke. “The season has gotten off to a great start; my teams have vastly improved compared to this point in the season last year, and I hope to continue improving as championship season approaches,” Richardson said. Evan Bednar, another Xavier student swimming for Kennedy, placed 3rd in the 400 freestyle relay at Waterloo. Kennedy’s next meet will take place on December 20 at Jefferson High School. Featured Athlete: Lizzy Edwards Q: When did you start playing hockey?

Q: Where do you practice and how often are your games?

A: I started playing hockey when I was around eight because my mom and stepdad played.

A: Our team is recreational so we don’t really have practices unless we have an upcoming tournament, and we have weekly games that are usually on Sundays or Mondays.

Q: What team do you play for? A: I now play with the Pink Ladies hockey team.

Q: Does your team play for a cause? A: We play for breast cancer awareness, and that is why we are called the Pink Ladies.

Q: What does your team do to promote the fight against breast cancer? A: We attend the Stick It to Cancer Tournament every year in Minneapolis. We also have three breast cancer survivors on our team, including our team rep who is currently fighting breast cancer. We are mainly a bunch of people of different ages having fun for a good cause.
