Hunger Games hits Theaters
The movie based on Suzanne Collins’ New York Times bestselling novel The Hunger Games hit theaters Nick Whitson ‘13 on Friday, March 23. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson. The story takes place in the future, where the country has been turned into a totalitarian nation called Panem, which includes twelve districts. Every year, Panem hosts The Hunger Games, a televised game show where one female and one male, aged twelve to eighteen, are chosen to represent their district and eliminate each tribute to become the victor. Katniss and the other district twelve tribute, Peeta (Hutcherson), go on a journey to the capital and participate in the tragic Hunger Games. The movie received $152,535,747 the first weekend, which is the third largest amount of money received, behind “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” in first and “The Dark Knight” in second. It lasts 142 minutes and is rated PG-13. Viewers all over the world have praised this movie. Fans have said that the novel and the movie are very alike in how the games are portrayed. The novel has a sequel, Catching Fire, which is planned to be made into a movie and will be released in 2013.
