News Xavier High School Speaker shows poverty around the world On March 14, Xavier had guest speaker, Gerry Straub, talk to the students and teachers of Xavier. Fr. Brokman from Gilbertville, Iowa recommended to Straub that he speak at Xavier while the students at Don Bosco were on spring break. Straub shared his story, telling how he was raised in a Catholic family but never really had a connection with God. He felt very empty. As an adult, he became a movie producer in Hollywood. Still, he was questioning God and could not find the fullness of life. He then went to document people living in poverty by using his talents in filmmaking to make others aware of what these people in need were going through. He has dedicated his life to
the poor and has been to Haiti, Uganda, Brazil, and many other countries. He has made videos from many of the places he has visited, and he says that the whole experience has been life changing for him. He views life differently than he did before and it has made him feel complete. Straub has current projects in Kenya. He mentioned how he likes Xavier’s morning prayer. He likes how the school takes a moment of silence and says that everyone should embrace the moments of silence to be with God. “I want all of the students to have a sense of awareness for everyone around the world and it is not all about us. We all need to take time to disconnect from life and step back and be still,” Straub said.
On Tuesday, March 20 three teams of Xavier students competed in the Economics Challenge State Finals. The competition took place at the University of Northern Iowa. The Econ Challenge consists of four stages. There are two separate divisions that high school students can compete in. There is the Adam Smith Division designed for students enrolled in Advanced Placement Economics courses and there is the David
Ricardo Division designed for students enrolled in a one semester economics course. On March 8, all Xavier students who signed up for the Econ Challenge participated in the first stage, an online test that was taken individually. The top four teams in each division from across the state then moved onto Iowa State Finals on March 20 in Cedar Falls. The three Xavier teams that competed in the first stage earned first, second, and
