School Buzz Please preserve wetlands, learners told

Primary School had the rare opportunity on Friday last week to learn about wetlands. This came after KwaDukuza Municipality chose the school to host the Wetland Awareness Programme, held under the theme “It's Time for Wetlands Restoration”.

The programme was hosted in collaboration with the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental

Affairs (EDTEA) and Umgeni Water.

Ms Dudu Ngidi from Umgeni Water explained to the rapt learners the importance of wetlands to the ecosystem, saying they act as a “natural sponge” for ground water, thus ensuring smooth flow of water, in addition to acting as natural purifiers of ground water.
