PROLOGUE Architecture is not only a physical infrastructure, but also a bearer of responsibility. It should be noted that this responsibility changes in accordance with the environment, which occurs among various backgrounds such as society, nature, and the humanities. Le Corbusier says that architectural connotations should be combined in new social forms to produce a new system, with the aim of creating a better society through design. The various complex responsibilities that make up today's diverse urban ecology.

01 [ PARALLAX LOOP ] Evotuionary Morphology for Parallex View- Historical hermeneutics of War JULY, 2021 Instructor : Yu Yan Instructor Email : Yimvyu@qq.com Anti-Utopian Architectural Theory Research Project

Team Work Xiwen Zhang Yuheng Liu Academic Studio ROLE IN TEAM : Philosophical Research: 80% Conceptual Design: 70% Technical Drawing: 80 % Starting from a news about the Palestinian military conflict with Israel in 2021. This research project focuses on the relationship between architecture and war and power, through the philosophical study of parallax and evolutionalism, the critical narrative of architecture. Architecture is not just an infrastructure of a city, we researched the history of wars, religious conflicts and other social issues in the Middle East since the last century, as well as the philosophical extension of Edward Waefie Said's thinking on the region, and in the context of his Occidentalism and Orientalism I extended to Jacques Lacan's theory of parallax and the mirror stage to analyse social issues from a philosophical perspective. Based on this research I draw prototypes of models that can be used in architecture. Through these models I have generated an anti-utopian or mal-utopian narrative architecture that critiques the social problems of the Middle East through the architectural expression of artistic illustration. Architecture as an artistic art form goes to an initiative, an appeal, a wake-up call to reveal the disturbing realities of society, and the anti-utopian paradigm is used as a visionary and constructive approach to manipulate the architecture of late capitalism with unexpected effects and possibilities.

02 [REBORN] Hospice Care For Children Emotional architectural design with a psychological healing function August , 2021 Instructor : Dan Li Instructor Email : dan2020@foxmail.com Location: East Lake in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China

Team Work Yue Chen Wenqi Fu Academic Studio ROLE IN TEAM : Subdivision Modeling: 100% Conceptual Design: 80% Technical Drawing: 60 % At present, there is a high demand for children's hospice care in China, but the development of children's hospice care is slow and still in the exploratory stage. So we designed a project which is positioned as a hospice building with medical attributes for Easing demand pressures. The project is a 2,000 sq ft three-storey hospice building for children with advanced cancer which is located in Wuhan's East Lake Mill Hill Scenic Area. Combining the theoretical knowledge of nursing, psychology and service science, the design of the building is based on the arrangement of professional medical functions. According to the theory of Gilles Deleuze’s ‘ deterritorialisation’ in ‘schizophrenic analysis’, we used Greg Lynn’s ‘Blob Modeler’ technology to design a ‘composite escape route’ within the bounded space to alleviate the pain and suffering of the terminally ill child in the final stage of life, so that they can end their journey in peace and tranquillity.

STATUS OF HOSPICE DEVELOPMENT

First, according to the <2015 Death Quality Index: Global Palliative Care Rankings>, mainland China ranks 71st globally in terms of the state of the hospice system, indicating that China still lacks a social policy and implementation strategy for hospice care. Secondly, the number of hospices for orphaned children in China is generally too small, and there is a trend of more hospices on the coast and fewer on the mainland, and more hospices in economically developed areas and fewer in economically slow areas. FUNCTIONAL FLOW OF THE BUILDING

Our analysis of the field of end-of-life care through ”inductive and deductive methods”, ”systematic research”,and ”interview and observation methods” has led to the conclusion that the entire design of end-of-life care services is a process of transformation from abstract concepts to concrete service solutions.

We have planned the traffic flow within the hospice, distinguishing between clean and dirty, and between the movement of people and equipment. In all, we believe, in human-centred, environmentally sensitive, scientifically sound, safe and comfortable building design will provide a comfortable hospital environment for terminally ill children.

THEORY / DEVELOPMENT

TERRITORY/ ELIMINATE SCALE

Based on the theory of ‘ deterritorialisation’ in ‘schizophrenic analysis’, we have designed a ‘composite escape route’ within the bounded space, i.e. the interior environment of the hospice and a series of user behaviours attached to the environmental space. Meanwhile, in order to meet the needs of the deterritorialised subject to move freely along the escape route, the value added and development of the 'escape route‘ can help them to recognise themselves in a constantly changing mirror image and to achieve liberation.

The smooth spatial operation of boundary architecture dissolves the superimposed relationship between layers in traditional architecture and breaks through the scale and boundaries of the building space, thus blurring the architectural boundaries and making the spatial dimension invisible. The interior space with its fluidity characteristics presents a soft, flowing open space form with creative concepts of movement, generation and sensual dimensions, bringing people a liberating and dynamic spatial experience.

In terms of profile design, depending on the different activities that the terminally ill children do in the different spaces, we have focused on the design of public services to be provided in the hospital, the infrastructure of the hospice ward and the planting of the activity space, so as to explore the principles of rehabilitation design for the children's hospice.

Life is an enormous gift. The story will end eventually. Everything in life is simply always like floating clouds to go by Thousand bunches of flowers on thousand trees have been already out there.

03 [ ECO TOWER ] Bridging Across Mass Customisation : Resilient Habitat in Chongqing's Industrial Zone August - September , 2021 Instructor : Enriqueta Llabres-Valls Instructor Email : ellabres@relationalurbanism.com Location: Old Chongqing Iron and Steel Works Site, Dadukou District, Chongqing

UCL Relational Urbanism Lab - Workshop Chen Ling Wang Xinyi Yu Yue ROLE IN TEAM : Parametric design: 100 % Conceptual Design: 60 % Technical Drawing: 70 % We use a genetic algorithm to iterate over the data obtained from the analysis of the site to find the optimal solution for the positioning and construction of the building with the objective of ecological restoration Contemporary computer science and more precise big data technologies for search and information retrieval constitute a paradigm in the history of scientific method. The development of new design methods based on the symbiotic relationship between human and machine minds provided by accelerated anti-analogies provides an opportunity that we use to investigate how back-end and front-end computer infrastructures can link digital manufacturing and industrial ecological reconstruction. From infrastructure to ecology, ecology will dominate the dominant concept of spatial organisation, designing ecologically complex and dynamic processes through techniques that simulate ecological mapping. Customised movable artefacts integrate ecology, resilience and culture through genetic algorithms to achieve sustainable regenerative eco-architecture. This attempt at architectural design has led me to rethink how technology can be used to provide new meaning to existing industrial heritage, addressing its core challenges such as: pollution, production, cultural history, and using algorithms to solve the same problems in similar low geographic areas

The site analysis led us to the following guidelines for the siting of the building: 1. We wanted the building to be closer to the exit of the area for easy access. 2. We wanted the building to be near, but not above, the stormwater runoff so as not to affect the building. 3. We wanted the building to be away from the railway tracks so as not to disturb the flora, fauna and people inside the building with noise. 4. We wanted the building to be as far away from the building as possible.

In the original renovation plan, the buildings blocking the axis of Red Square Street were to be demolished, a move that would have destroyed the historic original appearance of the buildings in the " 喜喜 " block and forced many old workers to move out.

The original plan would not only have changed the historic built form of the site, but would have also forced out the indigenous people (mostly elderly people around 70 years old) from the site. This would completely change the type of population living on the site and destroy the 60 years of historical and cultural heritage of the site.

Individual Work This is an area of red brick and red tile houses with a three-storey spire and a Russian flavour, planned and supervised by the Soviets, which has since grown into sixteen neighbourhoods. At its peak, 100,000 people lived here, all of them WISCO employees and their families. These red houses, which span more than half a century, include hospitals, schools, supermarkets, restaurants and all the amenities of life, and are a memory that every son and daughter of WISCO can never forget. As one of the 156 projects supported by the Soviet Union in China, WISCO (Family Area) has a distinctly Soviet style in its layout and design as well as in its management processes.

A

The original plan would not only have changed the historic built form of the site, but would have also forced out the indigenous people (mostly elderly people around 70 years old) from the site. This would completely change the type of population living on the site and destroy the 60 years of historical and cultural heritage of the site. Current trends do not take full advantage of these circumstances and often external developers manage to profit from the land value of Soviet housing, while residents are not adequately compensated. Whatever changes occur to the buildings, the legacy of large-scale housing is deeply rooted and will continue to shape the built environment for generations to come. I believe it is vital to maintain the original structure - through modification and renewal - to create agency for residents to carry this legacy into the future.

The main objective of the project is to preserve the history of the building, and the design aims to replace the original building demolition with a Partial building breakthrough that will preserve and restore the building to the maximum extent possible. The design also explores how the site can respond to the interplay of old and new. 19

DEMOLITION AND REDEVELOPMENT AREAS

The original living space is divided into a 20m2 group dormitory, a 40m2 single flat and standard family housing of 60m2 to 80m2.

The middle section had to be completely demolished for structural reasons, and the design was designed to meet the new occupancy, access and function while retaining as much of the original architectural vocabulary as possible, responding to the original building in terms of proportions, materials and form, and innovating on this basis, thus achieving a dialectical transformation that blends the old with the new.

The design of the youth and elderly flats makes use of the original house types to respond to the age of the population and attempts to create new spaces for dialogue between the elderly and the young through the redevelopment of the area.

The formal proportions of the original building are used to ensure that the wall heights and roof slopes and heights are in proportion to the original building. However, new means of spatial organisation are used in order to interweave the 'new' with the 'old'.

RENEWAL OF OLD URBAN CONSTRUCTION In this Red Steel House Community Renovation Project in Wuhan City, I sought a sustainable urban renewal operation to respond to the government's proposal to entirely demolish these old buildings and break the limitations of urban development. The site was initially a Siberian-style residential area built with the aid of the Soviet Union nearly half a century before, which was gradually abandoned. Through the demolition of the nonbearing structures of the old buildings and the integration of nowadays's urban social spaces and landscape, I introduced the natural scenes into the community and improved the coherence of the architectural space with contemporary urban life. Moreover, I recycled the demolition debris and other construction waste as gabions to construct the mesh wall and landscape fulfills, turning the construction waste into new construction materials to reduce the energy consumption of the renovation. At the same time, according to the population aging issues in the surrounding communities, I introduced low-rent housing and elderly housing to the community for the citizens. Overall, I transformed these abandoned space, landscapes and old structures into civic spaces to reactivate the old community's vitality. 23

The design plan is for it to become a generator of public socialization, studying Interaction, Behaviourogenesis, Proxemics, Psychoanalysis. At the same time, the project will hopefully attract more people and enhance the quality of the local space. THREE KEYWORDS。Are there any new architectural space prototypes that can be discussed? This is the starting point of our experimental project. This space experiment is located near the river in the tourist area of Jiangxin Island in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province. In this project, we give up the consideration of functional elements and start to look for keywords that can define spatial elements in the environment. After analyzing the site, the design focuses on three key words: ergonomic, Proxemics and Behaviorology.

In his foundational work on PROXEMICS, The Hidden Dimension, Hall emphasized the impact of proxemic behavior (the use of space) on interpersonal communication. According to Hall, the study of proxemics is valuable in evaluating not only the way people interact with others in daily life, but also "the organization of space in [their] houses and buildings, and ultimately the layout of [their] towns".In this project, we deepen and extend this concept, applying it to the category of physical space, discussing how intimate space, private space, social space and public space are defined and designed at different scales.

The ergonomic figures generated by the corresponding behavioural forms in different spatial relationships form the main form of the building section, matching architecture with behaviour and human behaviour with proxemics to form a complete logic of building generation. At the same time, psychoanalysis is incorporated to study the building's persuasion of light and sight through the action of opening windows, and to analyse the psychological changes generated by human sight in different spatial relationships.

VERTICAL SECTION PERSPECTIVE The choice of materials gives priority to the combination of steel and wood structure. Steel is easy to be hot-bent to shape the main structure matching the spatial form. Wooden keel is the secondary structure, and the texture and characteristics of wood interact with the surrounding environmental elements, producing new traces. Steel and wood are prefabricated in the factory and welded together on site.

BEHAVIOROLOGY Speaking of behavior, from the perspective of architects Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima, human, nature and architecture are discussed as a whole, because the study of this case does not involve the category of urban daily life pattern. Therefore, the Behaviorology of various elements in the natural environment was studied and explored. Breeze, sunshine, sound of waves, drizzle, sweet osmanthus fragrance, affecting the feeling, perception, touch, hearing, visual elements, are the materials of our design.

Human behavior, such as sitting, squatting, lying down, meditating, listening, peeping, wandering, overlooking and even staring, is the form of space The act of light, the rising of the sun, the setting of the sun, the passing of the last light, the coming of the lamp, the illumination, is a dialogue between space and time. Surrounding environment, sea breeze brushing, leaves rustling, frogs chirping, cicadas singing, is the medium of dialogue between people and space.

Energy extraction and automatic addition of infrastructure located in lunar orbit

Small-scale space design based on the research of minimal surfaces

December - February , 2019-2020

September- October , 2019 Instructor : Shuangquan Wang Size : 81m²

With rapid development of human civilization, the demand for energy is increasing. The existing oil, coal and other energy resources can only use for about 50 years. According to the current level of energy consumption, human may face an energy crisis by the end of this century. And thermal power generation will bring serious air pollution problems, such as urban smog. So, development of new energy is imminent. In recent years, many countries have discovered HELIUM-3 on the moon can be used as a new green energy resource, and its lunar reserves can be used by humans for more than 10,000 years. In order to solve these problems, we construct buildings in the form of satellites which is orbiting the moon to exploit helium-3 resources and provide new living space simultaneously. The moon tower moves slowly around the moon's orbit. There are two main moving lines inside, the downward space city and the upward energy source. After the extraction of helium-3, the moon tower converts the remaining material to 3D printing materials and prints the building along the core tube through the printing device, turning itself into a growing building. In addition, the moon tower extracts helium-3 from the mined lunar soil. Part of the extracted helium-3 is used as the energy supplement for the moon tower, and the other part is compressed canned, and transported back to the earth by the spacecraft. Throughout the controlled nuclear fusion reaction, helium-3 can be transformed into a new clean energy.

This project is about exploring new ways of shaping architecture, hoping to find new ways of thinking from mathematical models. I draw on the free form properties of the very small surfaces themselves to create a special spatial experience by forming spaces that are not simply orthogonal.

Minimal Surface 3*(COS(X) + COS(Y) + COS(Z)) + 4*COS(X) * COS(Y) * COS(Z) Neovius Surface Based on the NEOVIUS SURFACE functional equation, NEOVIUS SURFACE was generated in RHINO by parametric design GRASSHOPPER, the surface shape data was adjusted to the original building scale of the site to ensure the feasibility of the spatial design, and finally the thickness of the structure was generated and chamfered by WB plug-in.
