Space has tonality, and I imagine myself composing a space lofty, vaulted, or under a dome, attributing to it a sound character aternating with the tones of space, narrow and high, with graduating silver, light to darkness. - Louis I. Kahn This book is a series of architecture projects which explore the concept of core and accessary space, following the concept of servant and serived space came up by Louis I. Kahn.

Church Design

Individual Work 2017.9

Core Space: Prary Room Accessary Spaces: Nature, Cave, Well, Colonnade This project locates at the opposite of Taj Mahal. Based on a tale, the emperor, Shah Jahan, began to build his own tomb on the other side of the river but could not complete it as he was usurped by his own son Aurangzeb. The Black Taj Mahal was supposed to be a black marble mausoleum designed to be built across the Yamuna River directly opposite to the Taj Mahal. I designed a new Black Taj Mahal with church space to explore the concept of core and accessary space.

Order & Chaos

Geometrical Analysis of Taj Mahal

I am obsessed with the significant contrast created by the geometrical order of Taj Mahal and the chaos of surrounding bazaars. Therefore, in this design, I primarily tried to create spaces of order and chaos as well as transfer these two kinds of spaces into secular and sacred space. The core space represented the geometrical order of Taj Mahal, while the accessary space represented the secular space by extracting forms from crowd, cave, nature and stepwell.

After analyzing the plan of The Taj Mahal, I find the primary space of Taj Mahal on the first floor consists of four accessary spaces and one core space. Furthermore, the space of Taj Mahal on the second floor consists of three layers of space, which are outer layer, intermidate layer and core. Therefore, in my design, I obey the geometrical rule of the Taj Mahal by corresponding my design of space to the space of Taj Mahal. I divide underground space into four accessary spaces and one core space. On the ground level, I separate the whole space into three layers. The organization of spaces in my design is consistent with the space pattern in the Taj Mahal.

The prototypes of four spaces are derived from nature elements around the site. I reorganize them by following the geometrical order of first floor of Taj Mahal.

To approach to the sacred space, the church, one have to go through the mundane, the nature, the cave, the well and the colonnade. These spaces symbolize the normal life. After experiencing these spaces, one can realize how pure and scared the upper church is.

On the way to Taj Mahal, the image of Taj Mahal will arrive in your eyes after its reflection on the pool in the middle of the ground. The image of Taj Mahal in pool is blear since the water is waving. While going downward following the descending road to Taj Mahal, the emotion gradually becomes complicated and the sight of view gradually becomes constricted. Before getting into the primary church, the mood should be cleaned up on this road.

Urban Complex Design

Individual Work 2017.5

Core Space: Museum Accessary Spaces: Complex Programs This design is inspired by the book, MADE IN TOKYO, which depicts many urban-architectures in extremely distinct environments. These architectures attract me and inspire me, especially those pet-sizearchitectures that all kinds of unrelated programs crowed in one limited site. This project locates at Kita-Senju, Tokyo, Japan. The shape of this site is linear resulting from the land use plan. I think there could be more potential in this site. This micro-scale urban complex design consists of all kinds of programs which unfold along the street.

13

14

Activities in Urban Linear Architectures in Tokyo

In this site, the architecture is not only a building, but also a firewall to separate urban blocks. Therefore, this architecture in this site has the meaning of architecture as well as firewall.

Because of the precious land use plan in high-density Tokyo and the colossal and complicated metro system, many architectures are forced to use linear site. For houses and other residential b u i l d i n g s , t h e ro o m i s l i m i t e d . However, other programs could be more suitable for this site.

Originally, the program of upper level of architecture is apartment and the lower level consists of barbers, bars, pubs, izakaya and other programs. At night, after people getting off work, shops, bars, izakayas open up and the light of these shops lit up the bustling street.

Activities in Wall There are all kinds of urban activities happening in Tokyo. I choose these programs since this block is deficient for these programs. Then I put these programs into the wall of my architecture. Since the limitation of width of site, I start my design from section. Therefore, all programs and activities interwave in the vertical direction.

For structures on the ground level, because programs are complicated, the space are separated into serval rooms. Therefore, the structure is also divided into serval supporting structures. For the wall, as an urban-function architecture in this site, the primary function is firewall. Therefore, the primary structure is on the outer wall and the material is concrete. For inside programs, structures depend on the primary wall.

03 Lighthouse

Hotel Design Instructor: Prof. Liang Wu Individual Work 2015.4

Core Spaces: Rooms With Sight of Sea Accessary Spaces: Guest Rooms The site of hotel locates at Xiao Changshan Island, Dalian, China. In the north of the site is the sea and in the south is mountain. This project aims to create a pure atmosphere of architecture in site. Since it is on the seashore, the image of lighthouse at night and village light come into my mind naturally. Therefore, this design primarily explored the representation of these two images and how to connect people and natural environment especially the sea and the mountain.

Village Light

Speaking of seashore, lighthouse is the first image that inspire me. Lighthouse, standing on the seashore, emits dazzling and faint light.

The second image is the light of village. The light of village lit up one by one along the whole seashore as the sky gradually becomes dark and the village becomes bustling. These two image interweave with each other, inspiring me about my design of the architecture along the seashore and the atmosphere with the architecture.

Xiao Changshan Island

Sea & Mountain The site is on the middle of sea and mountain. Naturally, I choose a whole linear space to create a link between sea and mountain. Within the linear space, the sight switches between mountain and sea and the view switches between clear and blear. Besides, the natural light helps create this pure atmosphere. In the space, the light from open room improves the experience of the dialogue with the sea and the mountain.

27

Lighthouse + Village Light 28

Sight of Mountain For the sight of mountain, natural light comes in from the window directly. Through this layer of picture frame, facing the sun, the view of mountain is pure, unadorned and even some kind of crude.

Sight of Sea For the sight of sea, you will see the sea through a blear layer. The vagueness creates a chance of imagination of the sea, which is more interesting. At dust, dim sunlight will come in through this blear layer, lightening the interior of architecture.

04 Between Silence And Light

Stadium Design Instructor: Prof. Wenhui Hu Team Work; Teamate: Wenyan Zhao My Role: Design 70%, Graphic 80%, Physical Model 50% 2017.3

Core Spaces: Stadium, Outer Space, Training Hall Accessary Spaces: Preparation Rooms This project is in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China. The architecture locates at the side of Slender West Lake which many people are willing to visit since the natural tourism resource is great. The architecture in site has to cope with two problems. The first is how to coordinate the architectural scale to surrounding small-scale buildings. Another problem is how to identify the characteristics of space in the stadium.

35

36

Triangle Skylights + Stairs The main stadium is a combination of triangle skylights and stairs. Natural light, passing through from triangle skylights, illuminates the main stadium by diffuse reflection which won’t glare people. Stairs could accommodate the need of people for watching game. This combination helps create the atmosphere of primary space in this architecture.

Arch Roof + Colonnade The outer space consists of an arch-shape roof and a sequence of column. This outer space is where people have a break time in the middle of a game and where all kinds of activities could happen including retail, exercise even exhibition. I left this space for the possibility that people could use it for all kinds of purposes.

Site Plan 0 10

Stadium At The Riverside In order to coordinate with surrounding small-scale buildings, I divide the whole stadium into three primary spaces and set them onto one platform. Therefore, every primary space could coordinate with environment. Besides, I set outer break space in the middle of the architecture and rise it to the second level which could accommodate all kinds of programs and activities. For the training hall, I set it on the riverside so it creates a sense of harmony with the Slender West Lake. For the main stadium, I set it near the primary road so that everything could be done efficiently.

37

30

60

Wooden Roof + Colonnade Training hall is made up of wooden roof and colonnade. The aim of using wooden roof is to hide the colossal truss structure and provide a harmonious interior space for people to exercise. For the colonnade, it will provide sufficient natural light and create a sense of silence for people. Besides, the scale of wooden roof is consistent with the scale of people.

Details of Model 45

In the Training Hall, the doubledeck timbers system is designed to improve the quality of interior by covering the colossal truss structure and pipelines. With this system, the interior will be as clear and silent as original expectation. Besides, using truss structure, windows could be larger, therefore providing a lightful and clear environment for people to prepare for game and exercise.

In the main stadium, I use triangle top glass skylight to provide natural illumination of diffuse reflection for games. Besides, I also use horizontal sunshade to avoid glare which could impair people from watching game. In the outer space, I decide to use curved concrete roof to offer a pastel illumination f or people who have a break in the middle of games. Curve roof could also accommodate all kinds of programs and activities.
