THE VERNACULAR NEIGHBORHOOD

Time Odyssey In A City Of Lost Memories

SCAN HERE FOR VIDEO:

With the drastic development in housing conditions over the past decade, Singaporeans are starting to lose the kampung spirit, losing our close relationships with our neighbors. Studies have shown that in the newly designed estates, camaraderie among the new neighbors are not being witnessed as compared to the older estates. Situated in heart of Yishun, 'The Vernacular Neighborhood' aims to create and bring back more social interactions between neighbors through the use of eight different punctuation stops around the estate, bringing back the old Singapore camaraderie.

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How has the modernisation of Singapore affected our interac-tions with our neighbours??

How has the reduced interaction with our neighbours result in the loss of understanding of each race and language?

What is the spatial differences between the architecture throughout the growth of Singapore?

How has the reduced interaction with our neighbours result in the loss of understanding of each race and language?

How did the formation of the clan help the people get back on their feet in Singapore?

What did each clan do in order to survive after the migration? What were the dialects strengths?

THE TEOCHEW REMINISCE

TRAVELS IN PARALLEL REALITY

SCAN HERE FOR VIDEO:

The whole concept behind The Techew Reminisce was to bring back the forgetten history and memories of the teochew that were once buried under modern society. It is a fact that our ancestral roots have been long forgotten and neglected. Not only does the architecture retains the needs of modern society, it aims to educate its dwellers with the rich profound history of the teochew. The Teochew Reminisce is a combination of a shopping mall, a columbarium and a monument.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH In the early 1950s, the chairman of Ngee Ann Kongsi had sought to develop the land owned by the organisation at Orchard Road to raise funds for its charitable activites. To make way for the development, Ngee Ann Kongsi began exhuming the Tai Shan Ting cemetery. The first building to be completed on the site of the former cemetery was Ngee Ann Build-ing, which opened in 1957. This 10-storey building housed apartments and shops. In 1963, the land next to Ngee Ann Building was leased to an Indonesian company, which built Wisma Indonesia. Ngee Ann Building was torn down in 1985 and the area redeveloped into Ngee Ann City, which opened in 1993. The revenue from Ngee Ann City continues to allow Ngee Ann Kongsi to fund its educational and charitable projects. The building itself resembles the curved structure of traditional Teochew headstones, and the five flagpoles in front of it are joss sticks. The fountain represents wine as an offering. It was designed in this way in order to appease the spirits who used to rest there.

GENIUS IN NATURE

SCAN HERE FOR VIDEO:

In this project, we were tasked to choose a ‘Genius’ from nature which can either be plants, insects, animals or natural phenomenon and a scenario. We then have to research and observe its details, textures, surfaces, patterns structural system, functions and identify one that fascinates us from the ‘guru’. The chosen discovery will be the ‘Genius’/ ‘Guru’ that guide us throughout the design process. For my guru, I chose the lobster because I was fascinated by its the tail movements when it escapes from its predator. I began to study the movements, creating and exploring various forms along the way. The main concept of the shell port is the lobster’s shell. The four huge shell-like structures are the main frame of the structure. It is placed in such a way it mimics the lobster’s flexibility. Inside the building is where fisherman can come and enjoy the stay here and be protected.

LOBSTER TAIL When you think of lobsters and armor, the obvious connection would be their hard shells. What makes the lobster’s tail special is not the exoskeleton but the flexible translucent membrane on the other side of the crustaceans’ tails. Scientists have determined that the membrane is actually a hydrogel - it's composed of 90 percent water, with the other 10 percent made up mostly of chitin, ZKLFK LV D ÀEURXV PDWHUL DO FRPPRQO\ IRXQG LQ VKHOOV DQG H[RVNHOHtons. In fact, the membrane actually turned out to be the world's toughest natural hydrogel, beating out materials such as animal skin and natural rubber, and roughly matching the strength of industrial rubber composites.

CHANDER ROAD BARBER

THE VILLAGERS AND THEIR DWELLING OF MAGIC

N

In this project, we were given an area in Little India and were tasked to survey the site and identify 3 different locations where architecture and its environment generate a vibrant settings of life within the marked bound-ary. From the 3 different locations, we had to choose one of the location and find a dweller/villager we find interesting and want to look more into, to create a new space for them. Each and every dweller/villager we see and discover would have their own type of magic, and we need to be able to use that magic as a guide to help us create/enhance their livelihood, to maximise their user experience.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION My chosen dweller/villager is an employee working at a barber shop located along Chander Road beside Park Hotel 22 Little India. He is a shy person but at the same time potrays a cheerful demeanour which urges you to have a coversation with him. During his rest time, he would usually be sitting inside the shop waiting for customers while enjoying the air conditioning. He has many regular customers that come in for a cut als conversing about life. He is the only barber in the shop. He works from 10am - 10pm. After the haircut, the customer would pay at the telephone shop right beside his shop. The boss of the telephone shop owns the barber shop too. His movements are very limited.

3D MODEL

The 3D Model is a representation of how the architecture for my dweller would be. This architecture connects to the actual barber shop. The first level is extendable. It can be pulled in and out. The reason why it is expandable is so that my dweller would be able to connect to more people. As he does not have a proper rest area, the second level is a personal living space for him. He can place furniture for him to make it feel like home.

EBBC INDUSTRY PROJECT

SCAN HERE FOR VIDEO:

The name BuBu-Nity derives from the word BuBu (which means 'Fish Trap' in Malay) and Nity from 'Community'. In the event of a flood/tsunami, food will be scarce, the design of the BuBuNity promotes for a fishing community. Our cabin design instills community living, allowing each cabin to connect with others to form a community. Each cabin would serve a different purpose from the other, all providing the essentials in an emergency shelter. The BuBuNity would be able to house a maximum of 20-25 refugees.

PROJECT INTRODUCTION The industry project aims to provide students with an immersive design experience where students are given real-life industry relevant design briefs. Real-life design office environment is simulated where students will work on a series of closely supervised design projects with industry-relevant guidelines, schedule and standards. Students will apply knowledge and skills accumulated through earlier stages of their studies into actual application while working on the projects. Coping with natural disasters and global pandemics has called for a major re-think into architecture and its capacity to respond effectively to offer design alternatives and adapt to its changing environment and requirements. In times of volatility and uncertainty, we strive to seek for innovative proposals which re-think the idea of “Shelter”. Being temporal, dismountable and being able to be re-appropriated where necessary. A “Shelter” which is able to be quickly assembled and deployed for any critical or emergency needs in a short period of time. Below are some of the qualities which we encourage the proposals to focus on: -

Resilient to weather Sustainable to the environment Affordable and cost effective Modular and implementable Ability to be dismantled

DESIGN CONCEPT - FLOOD SITUATION

NO FLOOD SITUATION

FLOOD SITUATION During a flood situation entire building is designed to rise up in its dock and float there, remaining buoyed by the flood waters.

DESIGN CONCEPT - FORM OF SHELTER

A roly-poly toy, round-bottomed doll, tilting doll, tumbler or wobbly man is a round-bottomed toy, usually egg-shaped, that tends to right itself when pushed at an angle, and does this in seeming contradiction to how it should fall. The toy is typically hollow with a weight inside the bottom hemisphere. The placement of this weight is such that the toy has a center of mass below the center of the hemisphere, so that any tilting raises the center of mass. When such a toy is pushed over, it wobbles for a few moments while it seeks the upright orientation, which has an equilibrium at the minimum gravitational potential energy.

DESIGN CONCEPT - FORM OF SHELTER

Originally a 'geodesic' was the shortest route between two points on earth. Nowadays,it's used to describe a tent where the poles criss-cross over the surface, intersecting to form triangles. This distributes the stress across the structure, making it the most stable type of tent for extreme weather conditions.

MASSING MODEL OF INITIAL IDEA

TOP OF THE TENT

SHAPE OF ‘WOBBLY MAN’

FUNCTIONS OF EMERGENCY SHELTER With the use of sustainable materials, our aim is to design a shelter that is easy to construct and dismantle without the use of much tools. The shelter would serve as a place of refuge providing the essential requirements of human survival.

WINDOW (EC AND PVC SHEET)

The windows provide for natural sunlight

STRUCTURAL FRAMES: (PALLET)

The frames are held together with screws and nails

ROOFTOP ACCESS: (PALLET)

Serves as an additional route of escape, in situations where the whole BuBu sinks

DOOR BRIDGE: (PALLET)

Allows for easy connectivity with the other shelters when opened. Also serves as an escape floor

FLOATING ELEMENTS: (PALLET AND PYLON)

The EC Composite serve as floor deckings and pylon below deckings allows the house to float in the events of flood.

CPG WORKS (INTERNSHIP)

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

During my 6 month internship at CPG, I was able to experience first-hand of how the Architecture Industry functions and works. I have participated in overseas projects ranging from Singapore, Vietnam and China. The projects are mainly design competitions, masterplans and renovation project, which has allowed me to pick up and practice my software skills from what I have learnt from school. Being part of the healthcare team in CPG, I was also exposed to the healthcare industry, picking up the different terminologies and healthcare planning.

DIALYSIS CENTRE IN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL Throughout the course of the 24-week internship, this project is the one that I feel I contributed most to and gained the most experience from. This local renovation project is for a community hospital. The clients had engaged us in coming up with a proposal for a new scheme for their hospital. There were only 3 people involved in this project, Martin (Mentor), Paul (Supervisor) and myself. My role in this project was to do the 3D modelling in SketchUp and provide assistance in the PowerPoint Presentation Report. After completion of this project, I have learnt more about the way CPG does their reports. CPG always applies a similar way of formatting their report framework. Other than providing with design schemes, we also provide various propositions and strategies for the client, such as information on Garden Therapy, Importance of Design for Maintainability, SMART Facilities Management and many more. Besides learning new propositions and strategies in this project, I have also managed to learn a new software called SketchUp which I used to model up the floor plan on the right. Learning how to use this software is very essential as it allows me to come up with models much quicker than Rhino. I am very grateful as have took part in this project as I have learnt valuable hard/soft skills which I can apply to my projects in the future. I feel that this would my most notable contribution to CPG as I was the one that modelled up the 3D model and stitched up the presentation report together.
