Interview with Ryan Reynolds who plays “Matt Weston” in the movie Safe House

Q: What was it about Safe House that made you want to be in it? A: The script was the first appeal. We also had this young director who I thought would do some interesting work because I had seen his other films. When you add Denzel Washington into the mix you think, “I have to be in this one way or another!” Q: What can you say about the experience of working with an actor of Denzel Washington’s caliber? A: I expected Denzel to bring a sort of heavyweight presence to the movie, which he certainly delivers in many ways. For me, it was a unique opportunity to see how actors like him have done well in this business for so long. Denzel Washington is one of the best, if not the best, working actor living today. To work with him was like getting a master class in acting. He is extraordinarily disciplined in everything he does. That’s an amazing thing to watch. Q: This is also filmmaker Daniel Espinosa’s first Hollywood movie. Do you see him as a director with potential in the industry? A: If Daniel was a stock, I would definitely invest heavily in it. Daniel makes some pretty interesting films. I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

One of great the joys of this job is that you get to not just visit places but also immerse yourself in those communities. Q: What did you think of Safe House when you finally saw it completed? A: I was blown away because I didn’t realise at the time it would be so action orientated. Watching it was like a sort of nuclear explosion coming off the screen that was over before you knew it. I’ve never done a movie with a look like that. It was beautiful. Cinematographer Oliver Wood and Daniel had some great ideas regarding the pallet of it.

Q: Did you do most of your own stunts on this film? A: The nature of how this movie was shot made us have to do most of our own stunts. I did a lot of driving and I liked it.

Q: The film also has some humorous moments. Do you believe it is important to let the audience cut back at times from all the intensity and the action? A: You need to give the audience a couple of moments to just let the air out and breathe a little bit. Sometimes laughter helps you do that. If not, it can get a little too intense. I always find that the more intense the movie is, the more laughter there is to offset that.
