XTRA! ’s ULTIMATE PRIDE GUIDE AUG 12, 2010
Capital Pride IRL
C
aught in the glow of our laptops and iPhones, it’s
easy to mistake Ottawa’s queer community for a kind of cyborg culture. And I’m not just talking about the synthy, autotuned hits we love to groove to. After all, Ottawa has one of the most computer-savvy gay communities of any place on the planet. In the winter, we hibernate, sending out dispatches from our warm dens. In summer, the dispatches often come from outside, chronicling our journeys to Montreal, New York, Paris and farther afield. But during Pride season, we come out together — in every sense of the word. We go to events we would otherwise ignore, and even year-round weekly and monthly events get a boost during the week. Also, we come out to our communities as proud, queer and hot as hell. And it’s a good opportunity to get laid IRL (computer speak for “in real life”). During Pride Week, we cruise the streets without the need of Grindr, giving another meaning to coming together. Rather than think of technology as a barrier, let’s think of it as another tool for experiencing community. Many of the groups involved with Pride Week are well aware of this and use social media in the work they do. For a start, find Capital Pride on Twitter at @CapPride. And during Pride Week, use the hashtag #cappride. This Pride Week, I’ll see you in the Twitterverse — and in person. — Marcus McCann Marcus McCann is the managing editor of Xtra. A MOMENT IN HISTORY

A MOMENT IN HISTORY
As crushing debt loads at Capital Pride eventually made the street parties untenable, the party moved to city hall, where organizers could charge revellers a $5 fee to cover expenses. Also, the parade route moved to Wellington St, where it now passes by the Supreme Court of Canada and Parliament Hill before turning up Elgin, and heading to the lawn of city hall.
