ACTIVATION PORTFOLIO OF RUI XU Apply for the MLA, University College London
CONTEXT Landscape Project My focus: I considered the landscape as the city's catalyst, which was used to be the basis for activating various human behaviors and economic activities in the city. In this case, I think the most important thing is ACTIVATION, which is and will be always a major focus for landscape architects. Therefore, I have been paying great attention to how to introduce people, activate the site and activate people's lives in my designs. From my past study, not only did I learn design skills, but also the need to ponder what caused the problem. And this portfolio witnesses the process of me activating upon this critical issue. Through my three projects, the term ACTIVATION represent itself in three different ways. In the first project, landscape architecture is used to activate the economic development of the region; In the second project, landscape architecture is a way to activate people’s lives; In the third project, I use landscape architecture to activate the grey spaces of cities.

VENATIONS REGENERATION Jiangzhou Shipyard Transformation Design Time: Fall 2017,the first semester of junior year Best Creative Award And Winning Prize In 2017 Ruichang L&A Design Star Competition Group Project Role In Group: Research, Concept Design, Data Analysis, Masterplan Design,View Design, Building Design , Wetland Design Instructor: Heqian Jiang Collaborator: Yuan Tao , Shurou Luo The entire design covered many aspects such as industrial transformation, pollution control, landscape optimization, ecological restoration and reconstruction, cultural excavation and reshaping, tourism development, employment placement and residence, and commercial service facilities. Based on the strategy of preserve, re-use, re-create and rebuild, the design is deepened at the level of physics, society, sense and memory. How urbanization can coexist with abandoned old factories elegantly and resolve them to present both aesthetics and functions has been a question that I paid much attention to and try to find an answer. For some time in the future, China will produce plenty of industrial wasteland. And I believe the restoration and planning and design of industrial abandoned landscapes will have broad development prospects.

SITE ANALYSIS
TRAFFIC ANALYSIS IN RUICHANG Ruichang is a key industrial city in Jiangxi Province of China, which has many large industrial enterprises. After 50 years of industrial development, this area has become an industrial zone with shipbuilding as its main industry. However, since the beginning of the 21st century, the shipbuilding industry has gone downhill. A large number of buildings of good quality were no longer used, followed by environmental pollution, economic recession, and population loss. Centering on implementation of the sustainable development strategy and utilization of economic transformation to boost economic growth, this design is aimed to improve the quality of ecological environment and maintain an ecological balance. And through the development of industrial tourism, the tourism routes are connected in series with various scenic spots, ultimately achieve regional revival.

Shipyard The factory in this area has been completely disabled and its functions can be changed.
SHIP MAKING PROCESS The Shipyard is located at the northernmost side of Ruichang, next to the Yangtze River, a 15 minute drive from the downtown with convenient transportation. Some plants in the Shipyard are still building ships. Moreover, thanks to its special terrain, such production does not affect tourists’ activities at all. Therefore, I want to add one cable car route on the east side so that tourists can witness the shipbuilding procedures.

EXISTING CONDITIONS Given the status quo, p-r-r-r strategy is mainly applied to tackle problems: purification of water quality, restoration of industrial earth surface traces, re-planning of roads to separate pedestrians and vehicles, renovation of abandoned plants and addition of new functions to attract tourists. In the meantime, more jobs should be offered to laid-off workers, local residents and farmers. The Shipyard will be built into a well-known industrial scenic spot to facilitate local economic growth.
CONCEPT SPECIFICATION
STRATEGY STRATEGY 1 : Preserve
STRATEGY 2 : Re-use
Preserving native pattern, shipyard workers and residents, historical and cultural elements, meanwhile, repairing infrastructures.
The current structure, resources and population should be re-used to form new functions and occupations.
STRATEGY 3 : Re-create

WATERFRONT TREATMENT
1. Repair of industrial traces left on the earth surface
Step 1
Current Situation Vegetation and the ecological system have been severely damaged.
Step 2
Top soil coverage of 15cm thick.
Step 3
80t lime and 100t organic fertilizer are applied per hectare. These soil conditioners are used to lower the pH value of soil and promote plants to germinate.
Leguminous plants and non-leguminous plants are combined and planted with multiple layers, thus better restoring the site.
2. Waterfront treatment
Current Situation Hard revetment cannot help retain water and when seasonal flood comes, it will inundated.
Step 1 Hard revetment and hardened riverbed are removed and converted into soft ecological revetment and riverbed.
3. Traffic road treatment
Current Situation Pedestrians and vehicles are mixed, which not only poses safety risks but also pollutes the environment.
Step 2
Step 3
Local animals and plants are increased to make the revetment and riverbed more elastic, and weaken the threat of seasonable flood.
Water-purifying plants are increased to purify contaminated water.
The existing waterfront is mostly linear hard revetment made of reinforced concrete, along with handrails to separate people from the water. The transformation will involve softening of hard waterfront and removal of handrails, and addition of facilities close to water. The hydrophilic space will be created in eight forms: wander path, overwater path, canal overlope, waterfront promenade, wetland, waterfront plaza, waterfront terrace and waterplay. In this way, the purpose of relaxing physically and mentally and promoting communication will be achieved. What’s more, soft and elastic ecological w at e r f ro n t c a n b e tt e r re s p o n d t o t h e seasonable flood of Xiachao Lake. Purifying plants such as reed will clean the water for tourists to use.

206 Factory Building Reconstruction Strategy 206 plant is a double span collar roof single-storey workshop with a height of 21m. In order not to add too many bearing columns and retain locality to the greatest extent, the external walls will be just repaired instead of being transformed. The “ox bone” structure will be adopted to help with bearing; horizontal tightwire will be canceled and converted into box-type steel tubes. While the roof cover and cylinder are maintained, a transparent first floor and a floating second floor space will be set for industrial VR experience. While entertaining, tourists can learn about the history of the Dockyard and people’s life in person. Bearing column reinforcement

A showcase is designed between the original bearing columns and cut components of small ships are placed for display. Meanwhile, a U-turn exhibition route is set up. To make tourists fully experience the shipbuilding procedures, studios will set on both sides, including ship design, material cutting and processing, model assembly and model spraying. In this way, tourists will deeply experience shipbuilding using their own hands, and create memories. 207 will be transformed into a science popularization hall that integrates shipbuilding exhibition and hand-made production.

The design takes into full account the terrain and current hydrologic regime. In order to optimize the water environment, natural and artificial water-purifying wetlands are designed on both sides of Xiachao Lake and rebuild local ecosystem, thus ensuring that water that comes in and goes out of the site is highly clean for people to use. At the same time, wetlands, as the habitat for wild animals and plants, can upgrade the ecological system and increase diversity. Local typical water birds include ciconiiformes, gruiformes and anseriformes. Diversified bird types can motivate tourists to come here to pursue refreshing experience and the value of ecological education. I hope that Ruichang can regard Jiangzhou Dockyard as the point, one to three-day industrial tourism as the line and holistic tourism industry as the surface to revitalize its economy and culture, and achieve the purpose of “Earth Roots Renascence.

Urban Exhilarant: Chengdu Sports Park Design Chengdu Sports Park Design Time: Spring 2018,the second semester of junior year Group Project Role In Group: Concept Design, Modeling, Analysis, Bridge Design, Masterplan Design, View Design Instructor: Hao Xu Collaborator: Yizhan Zhang, Shurou Luo I always have been paying attention to human health. Nowadays, most people choose to work out in the gym, and I want to make people go outside and have more contact with nature. Hence, I define the site as a sports park so as to provide more spaces and opportunities for Chengdu residents to exercise, live a healthier life and make them happier. It will activate their life like a stimulant.

CONCEPT
SITE ANALYSIS
In a field survey, I found that the model of traditional sports park shows a oneway relation between users and space. As a result, once facilities in the site are damaged, the number of users will decrease. As it’s less attractive to people, the site will be gradually abandoned, which forms a one-way circulation of negative results. Hence, I intend to introduce a commercial mechanism on this basis, including merchants and their products. Merchants can place their new products in the site for people to use. In the process, they can either buy the product or give it back to the designer. After modification, merchants can re-place their products in the site. Accordingly, facilities in the site are always being refreshed and the latest equipment will appeal to more people. A steady flow of people, continuously updated facilities and products will inject infinite vitality into the site which in turn offers infinite sports experience for people.
The site is located in Qingyang District of Chengdu City, about 20 minutes drive from Tianfu Square in the d o w n t o w n a re a . t h e public transportation is convenient. Moreover, nearby plenty of residential areas are being used or constructed, However, in such high-dens i t y residential area, parts with sports functions are few and there’s only one within a walking radius of 15 minutes.

STRATEGY To provide more abundant sports experience, I will not adopt original forms of exercise, which means the sports structure should be transformed. 1. sports is divided into three categories: stamina, skill and confrontation for which the most representative items are selected, respectively running, yoga and basketball. 2.1 For running, with calories per hundred meters as the unit, and through control over the track gradient, curvature and materials, I will provide three running modes: simple, medium and difficult so that people can choose whatever they want. 2.2 Regards to yoga, every time when people are doing yoga indoor, they have to imagine that they are surrounded by the nature. Therefore, we want to let them stay in the real nature and experience forest yoga. 2.3 As for basketball, we use VR technology to simulate partners, coach and stars who can not only play basketball with you but also instruct your movements. 3. More importantly, wearing smart glasses, you can interact with the site to choose tracks with consumption of different calories, look for the right yoga place and tell whether it’s foul play or not. By so doing, I hope to bring about infinite sports experience to people.

Graphic and dynamic exercise routes can be inferred based on models. For instance, running usually happens on the bridge and static exercise is usually conducted in patches of the site. People can choose an exercise according to their own needs. Buildings in the site are composed of a large main complex and scattered small buildings. The large complex is the matrix to which feedback of people in small buildings are sent. Besides, it will be directly delivered to product designers, site managers and engineers who will update the site so as to maintain the vitality of the park and build the best experience for users.

Bridges in the site have three widths, respectively 4m, 6m and 10m. On the 4m bridge will be canopy and chairs for people to take a rest; under the bridge, there will be a small grey space for plants. Canopy, chairs, flower bed and trees will be set on the 6m bridge, thus providing more usable landscapes for people. Urban Acupuncture Planning And Spot Design For The Daxinggong-Xinjiekou District Time: Spring 2017,the second semester of Sophomore year Individual Project Intructor: Rong Fan This design probes into problems existing in a city center block where historical buildings and modern metropolitan buildings coexist, such as lousy quality of public space and lack of city identity. On the other hand, the block is of great historical and cultural value so it’s not about a large-scale and abstract city but about acupuncture intervention on small pieces. It’s like using a seed to trigger changes in the surrounding environment and influence a larger area bit by bit. I divide the entire block into three properties of land use: commercial area, public building area and residential area. A typical plot will be selected for transformation in each area with a view to providing better walking experience for numerous tourists in this area, and quality residential environment for residents in the communities nearby, activating the city, changing the city’s appearance progressively and eventually updating the city.

Lack of connection with the street
Through analysis of commercial, public buildings and residential area, it can be found that their links with the traffic trunk are not close. Moreover, public space is not practical and not pedestrianfriendly. Therefore, it’s transformed and extended to be more suitable for people to use. However, due to different scales and natures, different methods of treatment are adopted. On the whole, two strategies are mainly adopted:1. activate place; 2. increase connection between street and place.

Based on the transformation strategy of three different land use attributes of the problem site, and then gradually increasing more land that needs improvement, and eventually updating the whole area, and build this district into a pedestrian-friendly and easy-to-use public network system, promote active participation of local residents and tourists, and boost the development of the district. It’s hoped that it can stimulate a huge chain reaction in the city.
33
The historical and cultural heritage of Nanjing has exerted significant influences over the city’s rapid development and modernization progress. Yet, in terms of theory, the past planning philosophies and design methods can no longer function concerning today’s social issues. Landscapes should play the role of infrastructure in a planned and appropriate manner. Local parts should be removed; its context should be retained and community relations should be continued. Eventually, the city should be returned to its citizens.

I noted that a special group lives in the site, that is, homeless. In China, the reason why they choose to wander around is because most of them are disabled and old aged. Therefore, I want to build a architecture that can provide job opportunities for them. Given the special group, the internal and external passages of the building should be smoothly connected and relatively open, and with sense of fairness. Accordingly, the element I extracted is circle: an element that represents fairness most and ramp.

Acknowledgement The completion of this portfolio owes to my instructor Miss Rong Fan, without her help and incorrigible optimism, it couldn't be done. I sincerely appreciate to my professors, they are Prof. Zhe Zhang and Prof. Hao Xu. Besides, I want to express my sincere thanks to my friends, with whom I shared not only joy and insight but also depression and nonsence, especially Shurou Luo, Zhaohui Liu, Zijing Zhang and Yizhan Zhang. Most importantly, my family, especially my mother, who give me constant support and faith, as well as patience and understanding. They are like the light at the end of tunnel, showing me the direction.
