Active Co-existence

While much of the scholarly writing on co-existence has focused mainly on event conflicts, its basic tenets -- recognizing multiplicity, the worth of the 'Other,' and nonviolence -- are applicable in architecture.Active coexistence is what I am committed to exploring. In this type of coexistence, relationships are characterized by a recognition and respect for diversity and an active embrace of difference. I believe that the world is actually not static or chaotic, but it lacks clear expression, and there is no possibility of open and public sharing.I think architecture is to create a continuum of relations, reciprocities, and comprehensible communication with the latent world. Soliciting a wide array of questions about refugee, transculturalism, visibility, inclusion, and exclusion, the portfolio sheds light on the long-term social processes generated between architectural form and its context.How to balance the complexity of architecture and make it coexist with the context has always been my concern. Architecture of Co-existence offers a truly interdisciplinary perspective on a very timely subject: “Building pluralism” means designing for a respectful inclusion of different cultural needs, practices, and traditions.

Reminiscent of the form of newspaper, the miserable past of the refugees was recorded and restored. We also reconstructed the section of the ship according to the refugee’s suffering when they fled. The profile of ship comprises three parts: a factory where refugees are trafficked by smugglers, a detention center where they were illegally sent across the border, and a refugee camp where they were quarantined when they arrived in Europe. The history in which refugees' economic, political and cultural rights were deprived was described by means of metaphor. The first space displays the contradictions and tensions in the geographical landscape of capitalism. Neocolonialism civilizes and tamed the other under the surface, revealing the miserable exploitation of refugees. The second space, through Michel Foucault's archetypes of Discipline and Punish as well as Panopticon, demonstrates the brutal punishment and control imposed by the authorities on refugees. The third space, inspired by the The Truman Show, creates a scene where the pseudo happy refugee community performed as a propaganda culture and campaign tool for politicians in the third receiving country. In the whole process of the scheme, architectural design was more like a materialized practice of thinking. Narrative served as one of the most pivotal vehicle to define a refugee problem or even more, enabling me to comprehend the latent world from another perspective.

There is a fairy tale that the Libyan people compete to chant which called:Udea and her seven brothers. One day, the brothers set out and told their aunt that if their mother had a daughter, to wave a white handkerchief, and they would return at once;. It was a daughter, but the aunt wished to be rid of the boys, so she waved a sickle. The daughter, Udea, grew up not knowing about her brothers. One day, an older child taunted her for driving her brothers away, who were forever roaming the world; she questioned her mother and set out to find them. Her mother gave her a camel, some food, a cowrie shell about the camel's neck as a charm, an African and his wife to take care of her. On the second day, Barka told Udea to get off the camel so that his wife could ride in her place. The wife was close by and told Barka to leave Udea alone. Udea called out for her mother to no avail and Barka threw the girl to the ground. The wife climbed onto the camel and Udea walked on the ground, her bare feet cut up because of the stones on her path. Udea abandoned by them, she have no choice but to walk alone. One day, Udea passed a city, where they were told of the castle where the brothers lived. However, they accepted her without question. Her tears of joy left white marks on her face. One alarmed brother took a cloth and rubbed the mark until the pitch was gone. The brother asked her who had painted her skin black, to which she would not answer. She finally relented, describing the treatment she received during her travels. Here her new journey begins……

The whole book of Livitan is divided into four parts, namely, "On Man", "On the State", "On the Christian State" and "On the Dark Kingdom". It was written at the time of the English Civil War. In human nature, some people may be stronger or smarter than others, but none will be strong or smart enough to die in violence. When threatened with death, a man in a natural state must do everything in his power to protect himself. Hobbes believed that protecting himself from violent death was the highest necessity of mankind, and that power came from necessity.

People flee their homes since the war began. During their fleeing process, they beard the hot desert climate of southern Africa.In order to stay alive, they are forced to exchange money with the smugglers to redeem themselves from their control. Due to the squeeze of the snake's head , they have to work in the sweatshop for several years. During this period, the refugees were mostly subjected to capital exploitation by the smugglers.

SMUGGLER'S FACTORY —— Economic Exploitation

In the design, a screening mechanism is set up at the entrance, metaphoring refugees' miserable experience during their fleeing process. When they enter the factory, they are forced to receive vocational education and manage to pass the vocational exam, otherwise they will go to prison and die.The refugees who pass through rent a container in the factory, which will inflate because of thousands of refugees' entry. The refugees need to trade labor in a trading center in order to buy themselves out of the factory. With the increasingly difficult trade, many have fallen down the drain to their deaths.

Some refugees eventually escaped from the detention centre, successfully fleeing to Europe. In European Customs centres, some were sent back, some were detained, only a small number of people entered the European refugee camps, in which contains numerous media exposure. The media express their humanitarian spirit, or make use of the refugees to get votes. In this period, the refugees were mostly subjected to cultural exploitation by the mainstream media.

In this part of the design, the entrance is a screening mechanism that is a metaphor of the European customs and the EU government agencies. In the middle there is a model community where will be shown to attract the media to report. However, the major of refugees live in slums beneath model communities. Every time the media enter, they are forced to the model community from the slums for media filming.

Jail and the boat scenes, at the beginning and end, may be a tad implausible, not to mention the end of the story. But the middle section, mostly move cameras on the factory and the model community of the boat, is breathtaking, topical, hilarious, tender and brutal.

The swelling migrant crisis in Libya gets a human face in this frequently harrowing Oscar-nominated drama from the director. The non-professional child actor stars as Udea, a protective and foul-mouthed urchin from the slums of Libya who, as the film opens, is suing his neglectful parents for bringing him into this cruel world.

I’ve seen amusement park goddesses stripped naked, washed blood-stained clothes, and heard rumors that Spider-Man has become a cockroach. Just know that beauty will become ugly, purity will become dirty and smelly, heroes are all over the world, but there is nothing they can do. Give virginity to the world, pierce the ugliness with a dagger, sue your parents by prosecution, and laugh and mock fate. Zane gave the baby to the man, only to learn that he could not protect anyone. He stood on the corner of the dilapidated street, as if life had come to an end.

A film that explicitly argues against the war into the world under difficult circumstances while relying for its narrative hook and dramatic effect on the heroism and resilience of a child finding her brother under difficult circumstances and foul-mouthed urchin from the refugee camps who, as the film opens, is suing his neglectful brothers for bringing her into this cruel world.

The site is located in Nan’an District, Chongqing city. With the government intervention of the development of areas along the Yangtze River, more and more commercial buildings and complexes are under construction to promote local economy, while the cultural architecture is ignored by public. Therefore, the starting point of the design came from the urban research. We summarized the conclusion of the research, aiming to build an office building owning cultural and educational activities to meet the public needs of this area and make it a centre for gathering different people, connecting infrastructures in the neighbourhood and facilities nearby. Besides, we also captured the essence of natural surroundings, and put forward the building that not only fulfills the role itself, but recreate the river view to be the participant in their context. A lot of geometry elements were used to achieve this goal. In the end, we managed to make the building become a frame which reshapes the river view and act as the link between the city and nature.

To make full advantage of the river view, according to the site analysis, the frame is eroded into the building. By creating different geometry holes matching the respective volumes on the facades, the borderless scenery now turns to be pieces with various frames, offering people inside the building vivid experience to enjoy the river view. The whole building is standing on the riverside as a filter to reshape the view.

T he whole building is divided into three par ts horizontally with different goals and the publicity is expressed in the middle part to the greatest extent as it provides multiple possibilities for interaction between the programs. There is also flexible circulation in the middle part to connect office and study center on both sides. In terms of functional allocation in the ver tical direction, some cultural activities are located on the lower f loors to provide this area with diverse cultural life, while more entertainment activities are embedded in the higher volumes.

In the TUD URBAN FUTURE SMART DENSITY X SHANGHAI workshop led by Professor Aksel, the Lilong community has a history of nearly a hundred years. The population is extremely crowded, the environment has become more and more messy, and the residents have become selfish and lack communication with each other. The building has been in existence for 200 years. It was once a teahouse and is now a historic building. Once the residents enjoyed drinking tea, chatting and holding activities here. But then he was rented out as a hotel. The building is very strange to be transformed by its owner, and it is badly damaged. Residents are eager to restore his original appearance, and hope to come back to drink tea and chat.

04 CITY DNA A CITY WITHIN A CITY Academic Work, 2019 Winter Instructor:XiaoMing Chen Site: Xiaoxiang Road,Changsha,China Individual Work

The idea behind CITY DNA is to extend city life along the building in a dramatic circling motion from bottom to top. This building not only designed a public square and a high-rise urban balcony on its ground floor, but even its top-level space is open to the public. The public activities are distributed from bottom to top along the pixelated stairs of the entire building, returning the entire building to public. Architecture has a strong sense of the city and the public, and has become an active participant in urban public activities. The central idea of the whole plan is to use a spiral DNA chain to connect the platform, terrace and corridor space with green plants as a whole. With its visual impact, CITY DNA endows the city currency environment with the simplicity and power of the new courage, and the two-design system of Xie Qun/Da Yi IJIteaching shows the human settlements in the building through open design. The spiral terraces and podium buildings on the tower turn the urban surface to the natural landscape surface, forming an outdoor natural hillside, providing a social space network, and providing various dining and leisure facilities. The square and the architectural cube are connected to the city and nature. The space is closely connected. This group of multi-level vibrant public squares will become a meeting place, a planned and spontaneous cultural activity place, and a scenic resort for urban residents.

The urban picture book is an easy-to-understand medium because it could effectively promote the understanding and participation of the citizens by addressing the problems caused by the protection and renewal of historic districts and urban development. The book The image of Changsha City· Chaozong Historical Street is based on the urban study and spatial narrative methods. It integrates multiple disciplines on the basis of architecture, condensing our thinking on urban culture and urban issues, proffering an alternative perspective for the public to elucidate the city. In creation, we utilized UAV tilt photography scanning to restore the scene, quickly modeling the block information via SketchUp. We also deployed technologies such as 3D printing to make the book as tactile and vivid, while instilling our own feelings into the city simultaneously. The good news is that it will be published soon. "The image of Changsha City" series start from the memory of space, event and place. Taiping Street is located in the south of the old city of Changsha, with a history of more than 2000 years. It is the most prosperous and representative cultural street in Changsha City. Through the precious resources of historical documents, picture books, old photos, models, images and other precious resources of Taiping Street, this exhibition breaks the traditional exhibition form and shows the 'past and present life' and cultural connotation of Taiping Street in an all-round way, and tries to provide an intuitive and comprehensive historical research for the public to understand and feel the unique charm of old Changsha.
